Evolution of algorithm governance in organ transplantation
Sep 02, 2020 Season 1 Episode 14
Ranga Sampath

Our guest: Dr. Amitabh Gautam

Dr. Amitabh Gautam is an accomplished organ transplant surgeon who has been serving as a faculty at the Boston University, USA from 2007.

In this episode, Dr. Gautam traces the arc of organ transplantation from it's very beginnings to the present day algorithm adopted for kidney transplantation in the USA. Along the journey, he offers valuable insights into what all needs to be taken into consideration and how the changing conditions lead such a system to adapt and support more sub-groups of people than thought of previously.

This podcast conversation may serve as a guide to know what challenges may come up once an algorithmic system is deployed for common use, the governance needed to be inclusive of all stakeholder inputs and the willingness to adapt and thrive.

Guest introduction
Is there a dilemma associated with declaring a person as deceased?
Given that the organs available for transplant are scarce, how have the governing criteria for managing these scarce resources evolved?
What does it mean to say that Organ Transplantation is data driven?
Why an algorithm that seems fair on the outset may not really turn out to be so for a specific sub-group of people?
Once a well designed algorithm is deployed in the wild, can we sit back and chill?
A case that led to further tuning of the algorithm post deployment - the Supreme Court weighs in!
How do you see the further evolution of the Organ Transplant space?
