Pooky Ponders – Big Questions with Brilliant People

Why does loneliness matter and how can we build connection, community and belonging? | Iona Lawrence

Dr Pooky Knightsmith Season 6 Episode 9

Today’s question is:

Why does loneliness matter and how can we build connection, community and belonging?

I’m in conversation with Iona Lawrence.

In 2016 Iona set up the Jo Cox Foundation in memory of her friend Jo Cox MP with her family. As founding Director of the Foundation Iona brought people together to campaign on the issues Jo had championed. Together they achieved the appointment of the world's first Minister for Loneliness and £20 million new funding for the issue and the development of the Great Get Together, which in partnership with the Big Lunch in 2017 saw over 9 million people across the UK come together for community celebrations inspired by Jo's belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

Today Iona works with a range of businesses, nonprofits and philanthropy organisations building collaborations and practical plans that build the stronger relationships and connected communities. Iona believes that prioritising good relationships fosters the belonging, understanding and solidarity needed to build a fairer and more equitable world.
