What to Do When Your Spouse Won't Do What You Want Them To Do
Nov 11, 2020 Episode 15

Whether we realize it or not, most of us have a long list of “shoulds” for our spouses.  Some common “shoulds” I hear include: they should clean up after themselves, they should listen and remember what I say, they should agree with me, and they shouldn’t criticize me.  We attach these “shoulds” to how we feel about our spouse, and our own happiness.  We think that if our spouses do what we think they should do, we will feel more love for them and we will feel happy.

Many of these “shoulds” feel fair and reasonable.  And, things sometimes work out when our spouse agrees and does them.  But, many times our spouse does not follow our “shoulds.”   That doesn’t mean we have to feel miserable.  There are some practical tools for finding more peace even if our spouse doesn’t change.

On this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why nagging, criticizing, and “punishing” a spouse rarely gets them to change their behavior
  • How to feel more peace even if your spouse doesn’t change
  • How to act in a way that is most likely to get your spouse to change
