In a time when the Ancient Israelites didn’t want to hear from the Eternal One and were dispersed throughout the lands, the Eternal One sent His anointed prophets to speak for Him. To the southern kingdom that was under foreign rule at the time, the Eternal One sent his prophet Zechariah. To encourage the Ancient Israelites to finish the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. In the time when the Persian ruler Darius was in power, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah. Through a series of visions, Zechariah was given insight into the heart of the Eternal One. Who in amongst the conflict and chaos, remained faithful to His covenant of love unconditional and life everlasting.

So let us begin our journey into the heart of the Eternal One and unravel the mystery of the significance of the numeral 4 through a vision given to prophet Zechariah.

Zechariah 6:1-8 Then I turned and raised my eyes and looked, and behold, four chariots were coming from between two mountains, and the mountains were mountains of bronze. With the first chariot were red horses, with the second chariot black horses, with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds. Then I answered and said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”

And the angel answered and said to me, “These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth. The one with the black horses is going to the north country, the white are going after them, and the dappled are going toward the south country.” Then the strong steeds went out, eager to go, that they might walk to and fro throughout the earth. And He said, “Go, walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they walked to and fro throughout the earth. And He called to me, and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who go toward the north country have given rest to My Spirit in the north country.”

In this vision given to Zechariah there are 4 chariots. In the ancient cultures, chariots were symbolic of power. That is the power to rule and reign.

So these four chariots in the vision given to Zechariah were powered by four groups of different coloured horses. First listed are the red horses, second the black horses, third the white horses and fourth the dappled horses. To an ancient culture, colours are very significant. Depending upon belief and allegiance, they can have opposite meanings.

Red can represent blood or fire which could either be life or death. Black can represent either  mystery, rebellion, trickery and magic or wealth and power.

White can represent death or purity. It is also associated with identity and citizenship of that which one chooses to align themselves with. The fourth group of horses were dappled, or spotted or marked. The significance of this colour to an ancient culture is unclear. However it could either represent decay or beauty.

The duel symbolism of each colour reveals the difference between judgement and salvation, darkness and light. The same presence of the Eternal One brings light and life to those who have aligned themselves with Him. Yet to those who have rejected His right to rule and reign, the Eternal One’s presence brings judgement and eternal darkness. For in rejection of the Eternal Ones’ right to rule and reign, they are effectively aligning themselves with evil. As a result aligning themselves with judgement of evil.

The numeral 4 is also very significant in understanding this vision. Unravelling the mystery of numerals in God’s love story the Bible and the significance of the number four, especially when interpreting the symbolism in visions, we need to go back to the beginning. To when in the cycle of creation, God reveals the significance of the numeral 4.

Genesis 1:14-18 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

So the Eternal One during the fourth time period of the creation cycle created the sun, moon and stars. During the fourth time period, the Eternal One set the lights in the sky. They were to rule over the day and the night. These lights in the sky were to divide the light from the darkness, the day from night. Divide means to separate, distinguish, set apart.

This is so powerful. Light must be separated from the darkness. For the fullness of salvation to come, judgement of evil must take place. Let us continue with the vision given to Zechariah.

The angel who talked with Zechariah explained that these four groups of horses and chariots represent the four spirits of heaven. In the power and authority given to them by the Eternal One go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth.

As a result they have given rest to the Spirit of the Eternal One.

In the vision and word given to Zechariah, these four spirits of heaven that walked to and fro throughout the earth bring rest. This word that has been translated as rest is first used in Genesis.

Genesis 8:4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.

Rest was brought to the ark and the land once the waters over the earth decreased continually. This was after the Eternal One had brought judgement upon evil and all those who aligned themselves with it. For every intent of the thoughts of humanity was continually only evil. Humanity had knowingly chosen to be one with evil, giving power to evil to rule and reign.

The Eternal One regretted creating humanity. Yet there was one man who chose to align himself with the Eternal One. His name was Noah.

The Eternal One instructed Noah to build an ark and anyone who aligned themselves with the Eternal One entered the ark. As a result of aligning oneself with the Eternal One, that is receiving His right to rule and reign, were protected from the effects of this judgement. Evil must be judged as such and separated out and totally eliminated from the Eternal One’s kingdom.

Only after evil and all those who had aligned themselves with evil were judged as evil, did the ark come to rest. In the times of Noah, judgement of evil came in the form of a great flood. A flood so great that it destroyed every living land creature that did not enter the ark.

So the ark found rest after the judgement of evil had taken place. The 4 spirits of the Eternal One brought the same rest, after they had gone out and walked to and fro throughout the earth. A rest that is only possible after the judgement of evil had taken place.

When evil is no longer given the power to rule and reign by those who have aligned themselves with it and evil is totally eliminated from all the earth, an eternal rest will come.

An eternal rest for the heavens and the earth, where they will no longer suffer the damage of  evil. At that time a new heaven and a new earth will emerge. Where only the goodness of the Eternal One rules and reigns. Bringing rest to every individual throughout the ages who has aligned themselves with the Eternal One.

For as in the days of Noah, the righteous, that is those who had chosen to align themselves with the Eternal One, will be separated from the ones who had aligned themselves with evil. Salvation and deliverance will take place for them. Our eternal destiny will be with the Eternal One. Eternal citizens of His kingdom of purity and life, beauty and riches, freedom and rest.

The world powers throughout the ages who chose to align themselves with evil, seize power by force and or trickery. They will be judged as evil and their eternal destiny will be with the evil they chose to align themselves with. Eternal citizens of the kingdom of death and evil, decay and lack, bondage and torment.

All throughout the Bible, it is revealed that the judgement and the elimination of evil must take place for fullness of eternal salvation and deliverance to take place. Those who aligned themselves with the Eternal One are passed from judgement. As we have chosen to receive the Eternal One’s right to rule and reign, we are separated from those who have chosen to reject the Eternal One’s right to rule and reign. Having rejected the Eternal One’s right to rule and reign and His gift of salvation, they have effectively aligned themselves with evil and come under the judgement of evil.

A greater revelation of this is shown in a vision given to the Apostle John centuries after the one given to Zechariah. It also uses the symbolism of the numeral four. Let us go to an aspect of the vision given to John. Where the opening of the seals of the scroll is symbolic of the release of judgement of evil and the elimination of it, bringing the fullness of salvation and deliverance.

Revelation 6:1-8 Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.” Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”

When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.

This passage depicts a time on earth when those who had aligned themselves with the Eternal One, will not be affected by the judgement of evil.

There will be a revealing of evil and all those who have aligned themselves with it. There is only one who can determine what is evil. That is the Eternal One Himself. For He alone is only good. There is only one who is the Lord of everyone’s destiny and the bringer of eternal life. He is the one who is depicted as the lamb in this passage and His name is Jesus.

The similarities between the 4 chariots in the vision given to Zechariah and the 4 horsemen in the vision given to the Apostle John centuries later are there.

Both recipients of the two visions knew the creation story as told in Genesis 1.

Understanding the significance of the numeral 4 brings clarity into both visions. Everyone’s destiny is determined by who or what we align ourselves with. Either receiving the Eternal Ones right to rule and reign or rejecting it. Just as in the 4th time period cycle of creation, where the Eternal One separated the natural light from the darkness, the Eternal One has shone His glorious spiritual light of truth on the earth in Jesus. He exposes evil with His truth and will seperate evil from good.

Jesus is coming back and will divide the good from evil. Bring the fullness of His salvation in the judgement of evil and the elimination of it. We will dwell with Him for all eternity and evil will have no power, no place. Praise His mighty name!
