Dr. Jeremy Lam, MD:

Serrapeptase supplement benefits. Serrapeptase is an enzyme that's isolated from the bacteria found in silkworms. Now don't be grossed out, you know, that it is isolated from silkworms. It has a lot of benefits. Some of the benefits of serrapeptase is that actually is used to reduce inflammation and pain from surgery, trauma and other inflammatory conditions. It's also a proteolytic enzyme. Now what does that mean? A proteolytic enzyme means that it helps break down protein and amino acids. Now let's go through some of the benefits of serrapeptase. Some of the benefits include reducing inflammation and this is so important in today's world. If you're having migrating joint aches, muscle aches, you feel like your body is inflamed, then serrapeptase has actually been used in dentistry for minor surgical procedures and tooth removals to help reduce pain, large jaw and facial swelling. Serrapeptase outperforms powerful drugs, such as ibuprofen or corticosteroids and also improving lockjaw and can reduce pain and by inhibiting pain-inducing compounds. In one study, 200 people with inflammatory ear, nose and throat conditions participated in taking serrapeptase and they found that they had decreased pain and decreased mucus production compared with those who took placebo. It can also prevent infections by decreasing the risk of bacterial infections by inhibiting the formation of biofilms. Biofilms is in a lot of today's news, because it is associated with antibiotic resistance. It helps to actually break down the biofilms of your bacteria and also improve the efficacy of antibiotics. Serrapeptase may also help dissolve blood clots, and helps to treat atherosclerosis, the plaque in your arteries. And by doing so, actually, the plaque buildup in your arteries decrease from possibly serrapeptase. But it could also be useful in chronic respiratory disease. And that's where you have an increased clearance of mucus or reduce inflammation in the lungs, and people with chronic lung disease. So when taken orally, serrapeptase can be broken down by gastric acid. And so make sure that you take dietary supplements that can help the serrapeptase get absorbed better. You want to make sure that you don't have any blood thinning conditions so that you don't bruise easily, or you don't bleed easily as it can lead to more bleeding issues. So if you want to take serrapeptase consider consulting with your local doctor or primary care doctor to make sure that this is a supplement that would be right for you.
