Speaker 1:

welcome back to the jaybusworth podcast. Today is wednesday, october 16th, and we are back for another podcast. It is just your boy today, giovante um or joe, depending on. I don't know why I said giov. I'm always, ever only going to call Joe in the pod. Well, that's a mistake on my part, but I'm not going to redo this. So just me.

Speaker 1:

Jace couldn't make it, so I'm here do all the recaps of everything this past weekend, and I think the only pick we're really making is the Thursday night football pick. But that's honestly pretty easy, based on if you know, if you know what the game's coming up, I think there's a very natural pick to go with um, based on how things have been going recently. So we'll get to that later. Um, no more jibber jabber, because I'm gonna be doing plenty of that on my own. So let's make it about something at least. So let's start with college football. That was the this past Saturday and there really is no other place to start. Right, like, maybe I, you know, I will get to some of the smaller games first before I get to the one that really that that I'm probably gonna spend the most time about um, at least with talking about how it made me feel how the whole thing and everything around it Texas, oklahoma that was the Red River rivalry or the Red River shoot it, depending on what you would like to call it.

Speaker 1:

Texas beat Oklahoma 34-3. This game was pretty much in. It started out a little rocky in that first quarter. Oklahoma's defense made it a little bit tougher. Quinn Ewers threw a pick early on in that game. He was coming back from an injury where he hasn't been playing for like two or three weeks, so it's been a minute since Quinn Uris had been out there. Um, this was the game that they pretty much probably decided from the get-go when he first got his oblique injury that he was going to come back. For he came back. He looked a little rusty at first but as soon as he knocked that rust off, texas just kind of took control of it, even though, like Oklahoma, had a 3-point, 3-point lead at the end of the first quarter, it almost felt like it was only a matter of time before Texas kind of took control of this game. And that's exactly what they ended up doing. Oklahoma scored those first three points in that first quarter, didn't score a point again.

Speaker 1:

That Texas defense is very good. I think it's more about this Oklahoma offense kind of being awful. Again. They have a young quarterback, that's a freshman, that just came in. He's like the second start for that Oklahoma team this year after they had gotten rid of the first quarterback they started off the year with. I believe his name was oh no, what was his name before? Oh, dang Jackson Arnold. That was the guy that ended up starting early on this year. They ended up sitting him for Michael Hawkins Jr. He's still a young quarterback but they felt like it kind of fit their offense better. But he's still pretty young. Like I said, freshman is not ready for necessarily this moment against a team like Texas in that defense.

Speaker 1:

So Texas, kind of like a Cobra just came not Cobra, but what is it, it doesn't really matter. Texas came in, suffocated them. It was honestly never really much of a game, other than that first quarter. Oklahoma's defense was good, but after that Texas took control offensively and then Oklahoma really wasn't able to get off the mat once Texas started being able to swing with Quinn Ewers playing a lot better. So that game honestly like the fact that Oklahoma is still ranked at this point was kind of crazy because of how bad they had looked this year, especially offensively. Their defense has been pretty good but it's just like offensively them and like Florida State, like based on what they came into the year, like everybody thought they were supposed to look like, they've just been putrid pretty much this whole time. So the fact that they were still even ranked coming into this game against Texas was crazy. But again, I think it only helps Texas having this game under their belt, even if at least they can call it a ranked matchup by the end of the year. But they got a good win, definitely, honestly a dominant win in this rivalry game and it honestly wasn't even close at all and Quinn Ewers will only look better and better as he keeps playing more and more games coming off the injury. But it was a slow start. Let's get to that game later.

Speaker 1:

Penn State-USC. Penn State beat USC 33-30 in overtime. This game kind of started off with USC kind of taking control. Early on At halftime it was a 20-6 lead. It felt like USC offensively was firing pretty well and then defensively they were just able to keep Penn State from getting into the end zone and it felt like that was something that probably could keep going, because we all know Penn State isn't necessarily the best offensively and they can tend to be a little bit more feast or famine when it comes to their offense. So either they're like, especially against teams that are worse than them they Penn State likes to beat up on, but then once they get to a team that's like closer to talent with them, they kind of like to show up a little bit. But again, I think we have to remember that this USC team is not close when it comes to talent at every position. At least I think offensively they are still a pretty talented team, but when it comes to the offensive and defensive lines USC really isn't that and I think the fact that USC was able to hold on to that first half as well as they did just shows that they do have some top tier talent. But it's just as games go farther and farther in, it just seems like USC breaks down, especially on those offensive and defensive lines and honestly, that's where Penn State probably has their best strength.

Speaker 1:

And as that game went along, usc was just feeling more and more pressure offensively from that Penn State defensive line. Miller Moss was just getting more and more bothered by that Penn State defensive line going into the game, especially in that second half, and I think defensively Penn State was just able to keep kind of going at it and be able to run the football, and then Penn State, in the second half, was able to make some more explosive offensive plays. Let me get to the tight end that they had in this game. What is it, tyler Warren, that was their tight end in this game? This is a tight end that they had in this game. What is it, tyler Warren, that was their tight end in this game he had? This is a tight end, let me remind you, because, honestly, penn State doesn't necessarily have a great receiving core that you can rely upon, but this guy, tyler Warren 17 receptions for 224 yards and a touchdown.

Speaker 1:

It just felt like this USC defense had never seen a tight end that can catch a football before. Like it's like every time they needed something, he was just kind of in the right place and he was all by himself and he was ready to make the, make the reception and run for a bunch of yards afterwards. It's like it just that USC defense like look like early on this year that they were going to be better, but it just kind of they're back to looking exactly how they looked last year. Just like it just looked like they were always in the wrong spots, not knowing what they were doing. They tackled a little bit better, I guess, but it's still not necessarily locked on, locked in where you're like, oh, they're definitely going to be able to tackle him. This Tyler Warren dude was destroying them.

Speaker 1:

And again, this is a tight end. A very talented tight end, I might mind you. Very talented tight end, I might mind you. But it's not like this. They have a crazy fast wide receiver that's running over the top and nobody can guard him. This is a tight end, just in the middle of the field by himself and they're just getting big plays to him, not just in the middle of the field, but they also got a big play to him over the top too. But it's just like he just couldn't be stopped by USC at all and it's just. It was very, it's very crazy to look at.

Speaker 1:

But even still, even with Penn State coming back in that second half from being in that hole, they were able to score enough points in the second half to kind of tie it up at the end of the game and then, once they got to overtime, penn State got the ball first. Was it Penn State? Yeah, penn State got the ball first and pretty much just took care of business and did not let USC score anything. Actually, no, usc got the ball first, didn't they? Let me see, hold on, let me check here Play by play. Okay, yeah, usc, in overtime, got the ball first, missed the field goal. Like they only got four plays, negative three yards, they got no yards and then they missed the field goal they were going for. And then Penn State got the ball went four plays, six yards, hit the field goal, ended up winning the game.

Speaker 1:

So, like the fact that it just, it's a testament to the how USC isn't necessarily built to play against the higher tier teams in this Big Ten, as of yet and again, I'm not saying Penn State's a world beater, but at the at the positions of importance, us I mean Penn State's really built on those offensive and defensive lines as a really stout team and even with their offense not necessarily being all that great, their defense was able to keep the minute long enough for their offense to start finding a rhythm. And Tyler Warren, the guy they decided to start throwing to, he was just insane in this game and USC could not stop him. Drew Aller had another good game 30 for 43, 391 yards and two touchdowns. He didn't necessarily have an amazing game, but again he just kept the offense rolling and kind of kept them going the right direction until they were able to find pay dirt and start getting into the end zone in the second half. And then USC their court, like Miller Moss, didn't play terribly 20 of 34, 220 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. It was just a bad pick when he ended up throwing it. Um, definitely wasn't a help there, but like it, just USC's just issues just kind of keep coming up to bite them in the butt, and again against a team that's better than them, it was just like ready for everybody to see next game. Uh, georgia, mississippi State.

Speaker 1:

Georgia won the game 31, 41. It was not as sound of a game as you would have liked. I think Mississippi State ended up starting a new quarterback in this game. He ended up playing better and better as that game went along. Again, this is a Mississippi State team that has one win on the season. So this is not the cream of the crop in the SEC, like everybody would like to say that they are, just because they're in the SEC, they're a great team, like everybody would like to say that they are. Just because they're in the SEC they're a great team. No, they're not. They are a bad team and they're playing in an SEC schedule and they don't look good at all.

Speaker 1:

Georgia came in and just Georgia was able to score plenty, but I just think they weren't able to stop Mississippi State from scoring the ball plenty. So again, it's just like the Georgia that everybody remembers is the great Georgia defense that has studs all over the field, but it just seems like they are very leaky in their secondary. Again, alabama showed that and other teams have shown that Against Georgia you can score, and then Mississippi State was able to as well, but Georgia's offense is still pretty good and they were able to score on a bad Mississippi State team. I'm not necessarily saying the Georgia offense is world beaters, but they have good enough players that if you face off against a bad team, they'll take advantage, and that's exactly what Georgia did. It was a win, but it doesn't give me more confidence of what Georgia is based on how that game went against a bad Mississippi State team.

Speaker 1:

Next game Bama, south Carolina. Bama won the game 27 to 25. Honestly, honestly, bama should have won this game. I mean no, sorry, south Carolina should have won this game. Lenora Sellers didn't necessarily have a terrible game overall, but late in the game South Carolina had a few opportunities to go ahead and win this. But Sellers was not consistent enough. There were some easy passes. You thought that he should have been able to hit those and if he did, south Carolina ends up winning this game.

Speaker 1:

But it's just this Bama team man, it's just defensively it's a struggle for them. Bama's going to be able to score. They've pretty much been able to score for the most part with pretty much every game they've been in. It's just defensively they are a leaky faucet that just kind of lets everybody get some. And again this South Carolina team that isn't really great offensively with their defense, was able to get after Alabama a little bit. It made it a little bit tougher and they were able to score offensively for a little while, especially in the most part in this game, and able to make this thing pretty interesting. But at the end of the game, when it was money time, they didn't have a quarterback that was able to make the plays necessary for them to win this game.

Speaker 1:

And again Bama was in a spot where they should have lost. Like, I totally believe that. But again, it's just sometimes, like they say I think I heard this saying that more games are lost than won in college football and it just felt like South Carolina had their opportunities and they lost this game, rather than Alabama going and taking it, and I think that was more of what this, this, that game ended up being. But again, this Bama, just Bama just keeps showing how weak they are in certain areas, even though they are very explosive like they. They're as explosive as anybody, but it's just with that defense not being able to stop anybody. Is it just kind of it got? It's a little iffy at times, to be totally honest with you defensively, and I think it just makes it harder on that Bama team overall, especially when they're playing against better defenses South Carolina, they are 3-3, but they are better than their record shows because that defense is absolutely insane.

Speaker 1:

They have a defensive end. I should remember his name, because Ohio State was trying to get him too and I was really mad when he ended up going there. His name is I'm going to find it. I'm going to find it. I'm going to find it? Oh no, I can't think of it. I can't think of the defensive end, but like South Carolina has some very good defensive ends and like their secondary is very feisty and they're going to be able to make some plays, so that South Carolina secondary, that defense is actually pretty good. Their offense is a little bit iffy, but with Sellers they're explosive, but they're just not consistent at all, based on how he plays in general, but it's just some of those. He had a few moments where he could have made plays to win that game. It just didn't happen. But Bama took. They could have had an opportunity to have another loss this week but you know, managed to do just enough to win this game.

Speaker 1:

Next game Tennessee Florida. Tennessee beats Florida 23-17. And again, the issues for Tennessee's offense continue this week. Nico, I am nope Iamaliava there we go. I'm going to get this right. I'm going to be able to do that the first, like the first time, I try at some point.

Speaker 1:

Nico Iamaliava, the quarterback for Tennessee, is like still struggling to really get the offense going. He goes 16-26 for 169 yards and an interception. It really was the running game for this Tennessee team that really powered them. What is it Devin? Dylan Sampson and it was a monster for them this game. He had 27 carries, 112 yards and three touchdowns and the Tennessee defense wasn't like Florida was able to get some big plays going with that team. Graham Mertz did start this game but he ended up getting hurt I think it was a torn ACL or something so he had to leave this game and so DJ Lagway had to come in and he was able to get a few plays. He was able to get some big plays going and kind of keep them in it, but again they just didn't really have enough to kind of finish the job.

Speaker 1:

I just think this Tennessee offense is struggling. That defense for Tennessee is pretty good and I feel like they're going to be able to stop a lot of people with how much pressure they can get on the quarterback. But it's just with Nico struggling as much as he has. Like, based on how the season started, people were looking at him as a Heisman, a. Based on how the season started, people were looking at him as a Heisman, a Heisman hopeful and like how, like, how much that offense looks so explosive early on with him at the helm. But it's just over these last three or four games and now like he's like he's been struggling again.

Speaker 1:

He's a, he is a set, a second year quarterback, you pretty much being his first year as a starter. So I'm not necessarily going to put all the weight on him and say he sucks or anything, but he's having he's having a young, a quarter young quarterback moments where it's not really looking all that great it's. The question is is can he keep learning from these bad spots? They have to go face Alabama next week. So, with that being the case, can he keep taking these lessons and maybe be able to pop in a big game? I'm it's going to be weird to see because he has been struggling against lesser competition for the last few weeks. So it's kind of hard to say, even with Bama not necessarily being all that great, they still have talented dudes and if he's going to go out there and play bad football, they're going to be somebody that's going to be able to take advantage on that Bama defense and make a play.

Speaker 1:

But it's just been a struggle for Tennessee. They've been winning games for the most part, but it's just these last few weeks it's just been getting, even though they've been winning ever since they lost that game. What is it. When did they lose? Two weeks ago, no, sorry, a week ago, a week before, when they faced Arkansas. So they're winning the game, but it's just not a win. That makes anybody feel more confident about what this team is. It just kind of makes you ask more and more questions about this team, especially with Nico at the helm. So, just like it's a, it's definitely a big question they're going to have going forward. They're going to have to go and test that very much so next week against Bama. So we'll see how that goes. But, uh, yeah, tennessee wins, but it's not pretty.

Speaker 1:

Ole Miss-LSU. This is a ranked-on-ranked matchup. Ole Miss ranked ninth, coming off of their second Sorry already having a loss early on in the season against Kentucky. Lsu's coming in they were 4-1 at the time coming in trying to get a win against Ole, trying to get back into the conversation, to get into the playoff, maybe get to the SC championship game with LSU's loss early on to. I think that loss was to USC. Right, yeah, their loss was the first week to USC, but they've been undefeated ever since. They've been playing some decent football. Am I crazy? Who did they? Yeah, it was against USC. Okay, I'm not crazy.

Speaker 1:

So this game was probably one of the closer ones. I kind of missed a good portion of it because I was watching my Ohio State game at the same time and, honestly, that game was close enough to where I didn't really have any type of bandwidth to kind of go towards any other game. Go watch any other game, but it was a very close one. I did watch it back on the clips. Do watch the condensed version of it. This game was an absolute like. It was a great game Started off a little bit slow and ugly In that first quarter nobody really scored.

Speaker 1:

Second quarter, third, like second quarter was like kind of where everybody exploded. They just had some good scoring overall. Getting to the rest of that game Goes into overtime. Lsu managed to get the touchdown they needed to win the game, while Ole Miss wasn't able their offense kind of stalled out a bit only getting that field goal and I just think it just shows as great as this Ole Miss team was looked at to be before the season with all the transfers that they had and all of that, especially defensively.

Speaker 1:

It's just this defense isn't as great as it once was, and that's kind of a thing for the evening because Ohio State had some issues as well. I'll get to that here in a bit. But it's just their defense isn't as great as they thought it was going to be coming into the season and now that they've lost their second game on the year, everybody started to really question whether Ole Miss can really like even come out the rest of their season and not have a loss. Because I think Ole Miss still has to play. They still got to play Oklahoma, not like Oklahoma's a great team, but still they lost Kentucky. So they still have to play Georgia and they still have to play Georgia. And they still have to play Mississippi State, still have to play Florida um Arkansas, so like they still have some games left where they could lose. So the question is, like, can they hold on to the rest of the year and even get into the playoff?

Speaker 1:

Because this Ole Miss team for as much as they kind of balled out in IL and stuff to get get players to go there this offseason, this past off, it's just they are not a team that can necessarily do that every year. They're not really built that way. Lane Kiffin, their head coach, like it's been rumored all over the place that he's probably going to leave after this year, kind of go towards a bigger job in the SEC. So like things have been like kind of bubbling up there, like hey, we put all this work into this one season and it's not working out right now and now there's a chance you might be leaving. So like things, rumblings are starting to be heard about how things aren't really going all that well for the boosters and all that and, based on what they thought they were paying for coming into the season trying to get all these players, things aren't looking how they wanted it to. So definitely going to be some questions, a little bit of rumblings. It's definitely going to be some questions, a little bit of rumblings. It's just can they finish out the year and get to the playoff at least? That is going to be probably the biggest question.

Speaker 1:

Lsu on the other side of this whole thing, they have a great offense. Their defense is not all that great, but again, their offense is still explosive enough to where they can go and beat a lot of teams. They can be the scary team if they can manage to get into the playoff and have an opportunity. Their offense is very scary. Nussmeyer is playing some good ball. He's not necessarily the most efficient, but again, he has an explosive arm and they can, and they throw to some pretty good wide receivers. So, with all that being the case, lsu can be a very scary team if they ended up getting into the SEC championship. I mean, they actually do have an opportunity to get into the SEC championship game based on how things have gone so far, because, honestly, I think the only team with a lock on the SEC championship game is probably Texas.

Speaker 1:

And then the question is that who was going to take that other spot? And LSU only being five and one, they have as good of an opportunity as anybody and I think, with no real team looking like they're perfect, I think probably Texas is probably the only team that really can make that claim now to even be an opportunity to be a perfect football team Not really perfect, but a really good, well-balanced, all-around team. Every team seems, everybody else seems to have their issues. So, with that being the case, can LSU's strengths be good enough to beat a few of the other teams that they're going to have to face the rest of their schedule, and then will they be able to not drop a game in that same vein because they're going to have to play A&M, they're going to have to play Bama, um, and the rest of schedule really ain't all that crazy to think about. But again, they have their issues too and it can somebody bite them with the issues that they do have on their football team. That's definitely an opportunity, definitely a chance that that could happen. But it's just lsu. If they can uh take care of business, they can be a very scary team in the playoff if they can get in there or in the sec championship game. Sorry, sometimes when I start saying sec I try doing it really fast and it comes out really and it's just, I hear it. It's all bad.

Speaker 1:

The other games or anything else Kansas State v Colorado. It was a close game. I thought it was going to be a little bit. I thought Kansas State was probably going to be able to take control a little bit better. Colorado did lose a lot of their wide receivers. Travis Hunter ended up going out in this game. They lost their other wide receiver, jimmy Horn Jr, like they were. They were missing a few players in this game and I'll have to give Colorado some credit that their players were playing really hard and they kept it close in this game, even though Kansas State does have the advantage on both the offensive and defensive lines. Kansas State did end up having to get a touchdown in order to kind of go up in this game and win. But I will give Colorado all the credit. They've been playing tough and they've been getting some good wins and I think they've been looking more and more like at least a respectable football team that's not necessarily just top-heavy with a couple players. Their team has been trying to play some better football and it's been happening and they've been in these games against a team in Kansas State that is like has a well-established culture and they have good players and they know who they are and that I thought Kansas State was going to win by more. They didn't. Colorado hung tough and they've been playing some good football. Have to give them all the credit for that.

Speaker 1:

Travis Hunter, can he come back healthy after this injury? I think it was a shoulder injury. Apparently, deion said he'd be able to come back next game because, honestly, I think Travis Hunter has made no comment that says otherwise. He doesn't want to win that Heisman. He wants to win the Heisman. So bad he's going to do it. He's going to play both sides. He's going to play as many snaps as necessary. Bad he's going to do it. He's going to play both sides. He's going to play as many snaps as necessary and as long as he can stay healthy, he's probably going to at least be in New York. Whether he can finish it off or not is a bigger question, especially with guys like Jenty down over there at Boise State kind of doing his thing, playing amazing football still. So that's going to be a fight. But again, if he wants to stay on the football field, he's going to and he's going to be a fight. But again, if he wants to stay on the football field, he's going to and he's going to have to keep going because the rate Jenty is going for Boise State, he might just be a runaway train that nobody can stop.

Speaker 1:

Boise State, hawaii. Boise State won Ashton Jenty 31 carries, 217 yards and a touchdown. He's on a tear right now getting a ton of yards, touchdowns. He's beating a tear right now getting a ton of yards, touchdowns. He's beating pick-up running back. He's pretty much beating out at any. What is it in the sixth game by the halfway point of the year? He's pretty much beating most. Pretty much every running back stats about halfway through the season, pretty much for the most part, as far as I know. So he is on a crazy pace and if he keeps up this pace he'll end up pretty much breaking both the yardage and the touchdown record for college football, at least in one season. Again, can he keep it up, who knows? It was 31 carries, a lot of carries for this Boise State team. Injuries are always a part of this game, so who knows? But if he can stay healthy, he has been an absolute monster and he just really can't be stopped.

Speaker 1:

Um, illinois beat Purdue 50 to 49. This game went to overtime. Illinois is a ranked team so they were look, they've been looked at pretty good. Um, they are five and one in the season. Illinois has an opportunity to do some things in the big 10 and kind of be a spoiler for a lot of teams. I I don't think they're necessarily going to make the Big Ten championship game, but the fact that this Illinois team is ranked they've only had one loss in the year and they're winning a game like this against Purdue, where Purdue is 1-5 now, so not necessarily like they're a bad team, but I think it's more of a statement for Illinois' side that they were able to get into a game like this statement for Illinois side, that they were able to get into a game like this where it could have just they could have just rolled over, but they managed to pull this game out and they won this game in overtime, made the plays necessary and they are still five and one with pretty much all their goals still on the table. Again, it's be a hard mountain to climb, but again I think they do have an opportunity to um.

Speaker 1:

All right, I've talked about all the other college football games. I want to get to this one and, if you know me, I'm a big Ohio State fan. So this was like and, honestly, if you don't have to even be an Ohio State fan or Oregon fan to really care about this game, because I really do think this game was like the the game of the year this. They say that every week, right, this game has the opportunity to be the game of the year. This. They say that every week, right, this game has the opportunity to be the game of the year, and I think this game with Ohio State and Oregon was definitely has a reason to be. Oregon won the game 32 to 31. Let me get a drink here. This game, if I had to put it all in one box, not one box, if I have to like sum it up in a few sentences, right, this was two great football teams going against each other and just battling it out in an all-out war.

Speaker 1:

I do believe that, like I do, and with as many things negative as I have to say about Ohio State and how I thought they could have played better, they only lost by a point and by the end of the game we had. They had an opportunity, if not for one mistake by Will Howard, like staying, staying up right a little too long and not sliding earlier. They had an opportunity to hit a field goal to win this game. And this was in Oregon's house, in a house, in their stadium, where I have to give them a lot of credit that they, their, their fans were insane. It was loud the whole time. They say they only have around 60,000 in that stadium. It felt like it's a hundred thousand, like that's how loud they are. They're crazy people and I have to give them that credit that they made it a harsh environment for Ohio State and that comes out in the amount of penalties that there were.

Speaker 1:

I think Ohio State had like eight penalties. Let me see here when did I get the penalty yardage? I know that's somewhere Team stats, aha Penalties. Ohio State had eight total penalties for 70 yards. Oregon had three for 25. And is some of that penalty yardage a little bit wacky for Ohio State? I will get to that, but yes, I do think so. But again, that does show there were a lot of good, like a lot of offensive not sorry, false starts on the offense for Ohio State on the offensive line. That is directly correlated to that atmosphere being as crazy as it was.

Speaker 1:

So I have to give Oregon that credit and their fans that they made that a raucous atmosphere, something that Ohio State alums not alums, but like boosters and the guys in making decisions they have to take that into account. The fact that Ohio Stadium seats 100,000, I feel like they need to change some things up to where they can kind of make that a raucous environment, because they have the numbers. They just have to make it an environment where people want to go in there and make some noise and make it a crazy environment that people have to go into. Ohio State will have the opportunity. Hopefully they'll make some changes in order to get there.

Speaker 1:

But I think Oregon put on a good example of what a big game environment is supposed to be like, and that's exactly what they did. Were they not ready in other ways? Yeah for sure. When it comes to like, apparently the uh like for some of like the media scrum, like the media for Ohio State was ended up being in the tent after the game, so like they weren't necessarily ready to take on the amount of hype and the amount of people when it comes to media coverage and all that in order for them to play this game. But I think when it came to the environment at that stadium, there's plenty of time where ohio state fans that had traveled to this game, that were playing like watching the game in that stadium, they were closing, they were covering their ears because of how loud it was. So like I just think that's a nice little image. That's some nice imagery for how crazy environment that was at ohio state had to go into, and I think a lot of other teams in the in college football would have ended up crumbling to that, and I think ohio state took some l's for that when it came to some of the penalties and stuff like that. So they did give into that that environment a little bit I.

Speaker 1:

But I think only a loss by one point is not the worst in the world. And I say that knowing that I feel like if this was last year or the year before, if this was not the current format for the playoff, I think I'd feel a little bit differently and I'd be a lot more negative. But with losing this game to Oregon, ohio State has all of its dreams still in front of them. They can still beat Michigan, they can still win the Big Ten and they can still win a national championship. Losing to Oregon, I think in the national narrative as well, everybody looks at this as Ohio State like two great football teams playing each other and one ended up winning. It wasn't a runaway win, it was by a point. Ohio State had an opportunity to win at the end of the game with they can get a field goal off, but it didn't happen due to a mistake by Will Howard, which I don't even really put on him because it shouldn't have been that in the first place. But I'll get to that in a second.

Speaker 1:

So I think as much as I'm going to talk about the negatives for Ohio State. I do think they have all their dreams still in front of them. They can do what they wanted to do to start the year. It just I feel like they're going to have to look at themselves critically and make some changes. With this loss, I feel like it'll make it easier for them to kind of look back and like really look at themselves in the mirror and kind of realize like, hey, we have all the hype and all the names on our team, but some like we have to get the job done when it's time. And I feel like in this game specifically, oregon showed that Ohio State still has some things they have to fix on the defensive side. All right, before I get to the negative for the defense for Ohio State, I gave Oregon a lot of credit here. I'll start with the winners and then I'll get to Ohio State being the losers and what they have to do to fix it.

Speaker 1:

Hats off to Dylan Gabriel. I talked about him in the past podcast where I didn't think he was anything to be scared of. I said that he couldn't really throw the ball that well. I made every single negative remark in the world about how much I didn't believe in him being able to make Ohio State pay if he was given time in the pocket. He made them pay. He went 23 of 34, 341 yards, two touchdowns, zero picks, and I think was that including a rushing touchdown as well. I think that included a rushing touchdown off of four carries for 32 yards. So like I have to give Dylan Gabriel credit because he was sitting in that pocket, he was comfortable, he made all the plays necessary. They gave him like four or five opportunities for deep balls and he hit them every single time. He kept their offense in pace. He got, like I said, he got the deep balls off.

Speaker 1:

Evan Stewart seven receptions, 149 yards and a touchdown. Like he was an absolute monster. He was cooking Denzel Burke in this game Like he was an absolute, like roasting by every sense of the word. Tez Johnson for Oregon seven receptions, 75 yards and a touchdown. That offense for Oregon did expose Ohio State defensively, at least for the corners, in a way that I didn't think was going to happen coming into this game and I have to give them a lot of credit for that game and I have to give him a lot of credit for that.

Speaker 1:

I think that Denzel Burke, the he was the guy, that kind of like the moniker um natty or bust, this year for Ohio State he got cooked, he, he got cooked three like three times in this game for big plays and like it was just right over top of them, he was letting them right right past him. And the fact that Ohio State did not get him off the field or try to help him out like by the time they ended up trying to do that in the second half, kind of giving him some safety help, the damage is already done. But Oregon to advantage to them that they went and took advantage of that and they made the big plays necessary to win this game. Because I do think the big plays were a big reason why they won this game. Because I think Ohio State for the most part had a lot of like, they had momentum and they had moments in this game where they were getting up and down the field as they wanted to, but it just Oregon was able to get those big plays to kind of keep themselves in it throughout the game and then by the end of the game made some of the plays necessary for them to win. Dan Lanning, the coach for them.

Speaker 1:

I think the defense for Oregon honestly wasn't all that great. They made some stops when they needed to. They forced a fumble on Quinn Sean Judkins, their defensive tackle Harmon, the guy they ended up getting from defense tackle from Michigan State that they got in the portal. He came in, literally ripped the ball out of Quinn John Judd's hand in the first half to take a possession away from Ohio State and get them an extra one. So they made some good plays there. And then Dan Lanning to his credit he had two plays that were kind of like the intent 10th assist of this game I feel like were the could be like big reasons why Ohio State lost and Oregon won One in that first half Ohio State had had a, I think, face mass penalty called on them on one of Oregon's touchdowns and it led to Oregon taking the penalty the 15-yard penalty to end up kicking off from like the 50-yard line or something like that.

Speaker 1:

When they were kicking off to Ohio State, oregon then used that to line drive a ball off of one of the front line defenders in from the receiving unit for Ohio State, which ended up being Caleb Downs, the guy that gave him a temporary jersey to go out there on the field and he was out there. They had the kicker kick that ball line, drive it right at him as hard as he could and ended up bouncing right off of Caleb Downs. And then it came out and then Oregon was able to jump on it and then that was an extra possession for them that they took away from Ohio State based off of that rule, something I had never seen done before. Absolutely insane the fact they were ready for that. And I think it's funny because Ohio State was ready for that a little bit because they had Kalen Downs out there Downs is not out there every single kickoff ready to be on the hands team. They had their hands team out there. It just felt like they weren't ready for exactly what Oregon decided to do on that. Now, that's all credit to Dan Lanning that he had the wherewithal to have that moment and be ready for that type of play and pulled that out of the bag, and Ohio State wasn't ready for it and Oregon took advantage. So that's credit to them for that.

Speaker 1:

But at the end of the game this is the other thing for Ohio State Ohio State had the ball last with like a little over a minute left to in this game they were. They were taking away a lot of time themselves from being a little bit stupid here there with how slow their offense was moving. But again, I'll get to that in a minute. But there was not one point where Ohio State it was, I think it was they had it was like 15 yard bet. It was like 15 yard bet. It was like let me get to the play by player, cause I want to say exactly what it was. Let's see in a game.

Speaker 1:

Because in that last, in that last one, it was a second in 10 shotgun Will Howard. Um no, it wasn't that one. Um no, it wasn't that one. Okay, here we go, here we go, here we go. So on the, it was a second and ten. Okay, I'll give you the whole thing here.

Speaker 1:

Second and ten Ohio State Will Howard completes a pass to Jeremiah Smith on the right on the outside. Jeremiah Smith got called for an offensive pass interference. I honestly truly do not believe it was offensive pass interference. The defender engaged him first. I think Jeremiah Smith got flagged because he is stronger and faster than the corner that was covering him and Jeremiah Smith went for a release where he pushed, but it wasn't like a full extension or anything like that, but he's just smaller than the dude so it made it look a lot worse than what it was. And earlier on in that same drive they ended up hitting. They were trying to hit Jeremiah for a big play down the field at around the 10 yard line and the in the corner was holding all over him. It should have been a defensive pass interference earlier on and they didn't call that one.

Speaker 1:

So I just my statement is on, that is, if they're gonna swallow, swallow the flag and not throw the flag on that one, don't throw the flag on this one. Let them play. If you're going to, let them play, let them play, but don't not call that one and then call this one. Very ticky tackle in my opinion. But then here we go. So instead of it being potentially a first down, it was second and 10. At that point, jeremiah Swift would have had the first down. It was second and 10. At that point, jeremiah Swift would have had the first down, and it now ends up being second and 25.

Speaker 1:

What Dan Laney does? He throws a 12th player out on the football field and now it is 11 for Ohio State and 12 for Oregon. Ryan Day ends up catching this late and doesn't catch it until the play had already started. They end up playing out. That play ends up being incomplete. But here's the thing, they get the penalty right. So the penalty goes in Oregon, but it's only a five-yard penalty and it's not a dead ball foul. And a dead ball foul is when it's at the end of the game, like that, instead of having the play count, they just take the play away and they end up assessing the five yard penalty and putting the time back.

Speaker 1:

It was like only 10 seconds at that point, but by the time that play was over it was down by four seconds to six seconds left and they weren't going to put that time back on the clock. They're saying it's not a dead ball foul, but it has been now said since that it was done purposefully by Dan Lanning. Because here's the here when everybody says like, oh, it's not, doesn't really help them all. But guess what, now that you have a 12th player on the field, night when, where they put that 12th player it's funny because he was on Jeremiah Smith's side so they can play one on one against him with the corner, that's with him, but then he doesn't have to worry about getting beat over the top because they have an extra player to go out there and play defense and it ended up being incomplete play at that point, which leads to four minutes, four players, four seconds being taken off the clock and now they're down to six seconds on a third and 25. And now then it leads with Will Howard trying on that last play, trying to run and get some extra yardage, ends up running for too long before he slid. He tried to take the timeout.

Speaker 1:

The time had already expired and the game was over, and Dan Lanning has kind of been applauded and talked about how great of a plan it was and how great of a coaching job that was in order to be ready for that moment. And it has since already been changed, like ncaa has already went and changed the rule to where now it can be decided by the, by the team that didn't make that the call is not against to be able to take the clock back to what it once was and consider it a dead ball foul to get that five and get that five yard penalty. So now they've alleviated that because they, the, because the NCAA couldn't let that be a thing now, because the coach will be doing that all over the place. So they had to change something. They had to change the rule in order for that not to be an opportunity for everybody to go and do. But Ohio State had to pay for that. If Ohio State was just assessed that five-yard penalty and then the Ohio State was given those five yards, will Howard would have had 10 seconds and only had to get like another three or four or five yards in order to make that field goal a lot easier to make and we could have had a last second field goal for ohio state to win this game altogether. But it didn't work out that way because of how the rules set up. And then will howard made his mistake and that's that's how it all goes. So credit, credit to Oregon, credit to Dan Lanning, but I just think it just sucks that Ohio State had to be made an example of, for that rule that was stupid in the first place, to then hurt Ohio State in the end where they didn't have an opportunity to go ahead and hit that field goal. That part kind of sucked.

Speaker 1:

So now let me get to Ohio State and what I thought both offensively, defensively. Let me start with the offense I State and what I thought, both offensively, defensively. Let me start with the offense. I think I went into this game feeling better about the defense than I did about the offense and again, it's not like I felt terrible about the offense, but I still had my questions about Will Howard. Is he going to be able to be a big game quarterback and go out there and make the plays necessary and not make big mistakes in order to win games like these? I come out of this game feeling a lot better about Will Howard. I think in this game he was an absolute gamer and, other than the two mistakes that he made, which is like at the end of the third quarter, ohio State already had a one-possession lead. They were up by six points at that point and Ohio State had an opportunity to take the time of the rest of that third quarter and probably start the fourth quarter and make that a touchdown drive and then go up by two possessions, and that really would have put Ohio State in the driver's seat. I really thought they had an opportunity to put the knockout blow into Oregon to win that game.

Speaker 1:

And Will Howard fumbles that ball, fumbles the snap, and it was this easy snap. It was right to him. He just took his eyes off the snap right at the very end and he fumbled it and that was a third and six. And they probably would have converted that third and six and even if they didn't, they were probably going to go for it on fourth down because they've been doing it all day and doing pretty well at it. And he ended up dropping that ball and it ends up being a third and 15 or something a fourth and 15 or something like that and they end up putting that ball, kind of giving away all that momentum they had in that moment to really end that game or at least to really put themselves in position to really win that game.

Speaker 1:

That was one big mistake by him and at the end of the game, with that last six seconds, he just kind of waited a little too long to slide. If he would have done it just a few steps earlier he could have gotten at least Ohio State one opportunity to try to go and kick that field goal, but it just didn't really happen. I put that one less on him because I think he was just. They gave him a yardage line to get to and I feel like he was just a little too focused on that rather than being focused on the time, and I feel like it was just a bad moment. That one I don't put on him as much and I don't think that makes him necessarily like a you know, an antsy quarterback that's not going to be able to play in the big moments In this game. He played well. So I do feel better about Will Howard.

Speaker 1:

I'll give you the stats on this one. He went 28-35, 326 yards, two touchdowns. He played awesome. He didn't throw any picks. He played other than those two mistakes. He really had a very clean game. He got out of the pocket when necessary, avoided sacks, made some big plays down the field and I think he did a really amazing job in this game. Henderson did great. He had 10 carries, 87 yards. Quinshawn must have been hurt or something because he really wasn't all that effective. He had 11 carries for 23 yards and a touchdown. Quinshawn might have been hurt, but Travion just came out and played a very good game. He averaged over eight yards to carry. He was great in this game.

Speaker 1:

It the only thing that sucks that they stopped running the football. Really in the second half they only ran the ball like 12 times for like 19 yards. But I think that is partially due to the fact we lost our best blocking tight end, will kasmeric, in this game and we also lost our left tackle, Josh Simmons. So I think with those two being out, I think it really did mess up what they were trying to do in the run game and I think Ohio State's passing game was doing well enough, where I felt like they just wanted to stick with the high hand of Will Howard and just let him keep throwing the football around. But I do feel like there were opportunities where they probably they try to stick with the run a little bit more. They could have done something. But again, that's hindsight being 20-20. They could have easily won this game and we wouldn't have to worry about that at all. But again, I just felt like they had a lot more balance in the first half that they didn't have in the second half and they could have done a little better job icing this game away when they had an opportunity to. If they would have ran the ball a little better, kind of lessened the possessions and kind of worked their way down the field a little bit more, take some time off the clock. But again hindsight, not going to get too deep into that one, but Will Howard played great. Travion played great. Will Howard also ran a little bit too, which also helped. He got a touchdown in this game. He took one into the end zone, so he played well.

Speaker 1:

The wide receivers were awesome. Jeremiah Smith even though he had that offensive pass in their face which is stupid. Totally disagree with that call. But otherwise Jeremiah Smith had a great game Nine receptions, 100 yards and a touchdown. Emeka absolutely amazing. Ten receptions, 93 yards and a touchdown. G Scott at tight end played probably one of his best games as a Buckeye Three receptions, 46 yards. Came blocked pretty decently, made a couple big plays in the receiving game. Played blocked pretty decently. Made a couple big plays in the receiving game. Played some good time. Quinjon Judkins had a two reception for 38 yards. He came and played well. Carnell didn't really get a lot of run when it came to receiving but he went out there and blocked his butt off when he had to and I think Ohio State's running game was better for it, especially in that first half.

Speaker 1:

I think Ohio State's offense. I feel a lot more confident about them that in the coming in out of this game than before, um, and I think they're getting better and better. I think Will Howard's going to learn from this, learn from this and be better for it, and I feel like he's a already a more established quarterback that's been in college football for a bit. He's only going to get better for it and I feel more confidence in him in general, um, in a way that I never really felt about last year. And why am I forgetting his name, not Will Howard, kyle McCord? I don't think I ever felt this confident about Kyle McCord last year than what I feel about Will Howard right now. Will Howard showed me he can play a very good, clean game against a top-tier opponent, and I think Will Howard's only going to get better and better from here and get more and more comfortable with that offense, and I feel like the offense is only going to get better overall.

Speaker 1:

Again, we do have to replace our left tackle, who was honestly our best lineman probably this year, and Josh Simmons. He was playing very good football. So we're going to have to see if we can have a guy that's going to be able to at least do half as good of a job as what Josh Amuz was doing, and we're going to have to replace Kaz Merrick as well. At tight end he was probably our second best blocker on the team. So we're going to have to see if we can replace those two and if we can, I think Ohio State's offense will kind of get back to them and they do have two weeks to figure it out. They don't play this weekend. They end up coming back and playing Nebraska in two Saturdays from now. So they do have some time to figure it out. Hopefully they can. I think they'll be better for it.

Speaker 1:

Defense Let me get to the issues here. Let's start with this. Safeties are awesome. Caleb Downs, latham Ransom absolute dogs. They're crazy good. They were everywhere on the field. They were helping in the running game when they needed to. They were making some big plays. When anything was leaking out, they were everywhere. They were going crazy, making some amazing plays. So nothing, no negativity, is going towards them.

Speaker 1:

Linebackers I thought the linebackers played decently. They didn't really let any huge plays leak out. They were covering the run game when they could, blitzing a few times. They didn't really get home. But again, it's not really their job on this defense to really get home on blitzes. So I think the linebackers played okay. They didn't let any huge plays go on their watch and I felt like they are only going to get better and better throughout this season. So I feel more. I feel confident that they will get better throughout this year and be better in general.

Speaker 1:

Right, this is two spots where I feel the most worried. Okay, and again, maybe for different reasons, I already mentioned Denzel Burke. He got toasted, he got cooked, he had. However you would like to say it, he got abused in this game. He let three or four big plays go right over his head for touchdowns. It is the worst. He has looked as a Buckeye ever since he's gotten here and he pretty much started as a freshman playing his first year and he has never looked this bad. Do I think this is what he is? I don't believe so. I feel like he picked a bad day to have his worst day at Ohio State and it didn't look good for him. But this is where the issue comes.

Speaker 1:

I think Igbenosin. I think he played well. The way he plays, he plays off and he ends up making tackles, and that's exactly what he did this whole game. He didn't really do anything outside of what I usually expect from him. So that was fine.

Speaker 1:

I think it was more Denzel Burke getting cooked as much as he did, which is kind of surprising, something I never thought I would say in this game but with him getting cooked, I felt like they could have had opportunities to bring in another corner, jermaine Matthews, to come in and make some plays, because he is another corner that I feel like the coaching staff should have a lot of confidence in the way he played last year. He was a freshman All-American. He was a freshman All-American. He was awesome last year. So I felt like they could have had an opportunity to bring Burke in off the field and then put in Jermaine Matthews, because Jermaine Matthews can play some very good one-on-one corner play, very good playing one-on-one press corner, and I feel like you could have at least given Denzel Burke a moment to really regain his composure and play a little bit better in that first half. But it's just the way that that goes. They didn't really take him off the field, so I feel like they were just losing the opportunity to potentially get another guy out there that could probably be a little more fresh and probably give Burke a second to really regain his thoughts and his composure, and they didn't really do that.

Speaker 1:

Again, am I really worried about the corners for the rest of the year? I don't think so, because I don't think there's going to be many offenses that are going to be able to do that like Oregon's offense did. I feel like their wide receivers are a lot better than I gave them credit for and they came out and burnt us and they played very well. So I don't think there's going to be another team on the rest of Ohio State's schedule that's going to be able to do that to Ohio State like Oregon did, and it was probably going to be the same way until we end up facing Oregon again in the Big Ten championship game. But credit to um. But yeah, so the corners, I feel, had a bad day, but I don't think they're going to be bad overall. I feel like there's a little bit of a shift in mentality, a little bit from the coaching staff. I think they'll be okay. I just think Burke will have better days and I feel like he will never play that way again, because that's how this kind of duty is he just picked a bad day to have his worst day.

Speaker 1:

But this is my biggest issue, I think the Ohio State defensive end and, I think, the defensive line in general. They did not get any pressure on Dylan Gabriel at all in this game. I think he wasn't sacked once. I don't think in this game at all, and I think for JT Tuimolau and Jack Sawyer to be the big defensive ends that have all the hype behind them that came back for the fourth year and they were supposed to be first second round draft picks. This was a game where you needed them to go and win their one-on-one matchups, to go and make a big splash play to help out this defense. Because guess what, if you're going to be playing one-on-one defense on the outside, man-on-man defense with our corners, guess what helps Denzel Burke not get burnt the way he was? Is that for Dylan Gabriel to not feel comfortable enough back there to sit back there and wait for these long pass plays to develop? What messes that up is defensive ends winning their one-on-one battles and getting after him and sacking him. And that's exactly what Ohio State did not do.

Speaker 1:

And I feel like this lack of pressure has been an issue for years now and I feel like everybody's been looking at the coaching staff for like, what is wrong and why can't you manufacture more pressure. I feel like this is a two-way street. Either it's gonna be on Jim Knowles and Larry Johnson to manufacture more pressure by doing blitzes and stuff like that, or, the other side of the street, it's on the individual players to win their individual matchups and go out there and make the big plays. You remember the Bosa's? Remember Chase Young? They were game wreckers like they went out there no matter what was called. They just go out there and disrupt the play and when there was time, that's that's what they were there to do and that's what you would like to happen from JT and Jack. And that's exactly what didn't happen in the rest of the defensive line. They did not create enough pressure to help out our secondary, especially in that first half, especially with all the hype behind them and the talent that they have.

Speaker 1:

I just feel like this defense needs to have a coming like Jim Knowles and Larry Johnson needs to have a coming to Jesus moment. As to how to create more pressure. Either they're going to have to do a little better about picking and choosing when a blitz, and probably do that a little bit more, or they're going to have to get some other players on the field that have a little more juice, that can kind of finish the job when it comes to getting after the quarterback, because I've been saying this for a couple days now Jack and JT are like the leaders of the close-but-no-cigar club when it comes to rushing the passer, and that's the part that is the most frustrating for this team and I don't think that's really going to change unless they get some other guys in there or they really change their philosophy, because Jack and JT have been at this for four years now. They've been doing this for three years Now. This is their fourth and it really hasn't been a thing. Jt's had one big game against Penn State a couple years ago, but then other than that he's been kind of. He hasn't really been a consistent pass rusher. That way 're great run stoppers other than JT. When it came to Dylan Gabriel, dylan, they were doing a quarterback, uh, an option, and he ended up selling on. He sold, he sold totally on the running back part and then let Dylan Gabriel break contain and that was how he got his like 40 yard touchdown that he got. So like the usually they're good run stoppers, but not for that one play, but like, but they're not great pass rushers and if you can't find another dude to kind of go out there and win his matchup and really go out there and get after the quarterback, then you need to do some something more drastic to create pressure for this Ohio state team, cause if they were able to get after Dylan Gable, make him feel more uncomfortable in that pocket. I feel like Ohio state's defense would have fared a lot better, especially in that first half, and we would have won this game going away. But it's the fact that Ohio State's defense couldn't do that that allowed Oregon to keep getting these big plays. And that's what, even on the road, against a good Oregon team. If you just did a couple things different, ohio State would have won this game pretty easily. But it's because of those few things that happened and Oregon taking advantage of the moments that they had, oregon wins that game at home by one point, and again I'm not going to sit here and say the season's over because again, even with all those issues I just talked about, they only lost by a point and they had an opportunity to win the game at the end of the game. So everything's still in front of them. Ohio State will get better from this. They have two weeks to mull it over and really look at themselves in the mirror, but it just makes it so much more hump like. Makes it hurt that much more is that Ohio State shot themselves in the foot a good portion of times and like they still had an opportunity to win and they didn't. That's the part that sucks and I'm not going to get into. Is Ryan Day a big game coach and all that Cause? I feel like if you go back to Urban, urban was losing games against against Purdue and Iowa Like at least Ryan Day isn't losing those games. Like those are the games that Urban used to lose. I get it. He had the one national championship run, but outside of that it was like every year Urban had a bad loss against a team that we shouldn't have lost against, and that's something that ryan day has not done. He's just losing the bees lose. He's done bad in some of the big games, for sure, but I feel like if you get rid of him, there's has to be somebody else out there that's better, and there's not that many coaches that are better that are not better, like as just as good organizations. Why would they leave there to come here. So I think it's a. I think it's a few guys to pick from. If you're going to get rid of Ryan Day. To replace him with that you think would actually do the job better than what he has. And I think Ohio State fans need to chill out, because I do think Ohio State has everything still on the table for them, and I feel like we will have another opportunity to face Oregon on a neutral field, and that's where we'll really figure out who is the better team. All right, getting away from college football, yeah, oh, by the way, for the call for the 12th man, they have already changed it, literally. Just today they announced that they changed that rule to where now whoever doesn't have a go against them can just pick to have that time go back on the clock, and it's pretty, pretty, essentially a dead ball foul. So if that were to happen again, the team that has the ball will be able to get that time back on the clock. So a play like that that Dan Lennon pulled wouldn't work again. So credit to him, he made it work for that game and it helped him get that win. But I just don't think that that will definitely not happen anymore again. There's always gonna be another rule to kind of to bend, but you know, definitely not anymore for that, for that. So I'll go ahead and go on to the nfl stuff, um, because that's that's it for college football. So, nfl, I will go ahead and recap that a bit and make our picks for thursday night and then that'll be it. So week six NFL we'll get into them and take a drink here First off Jags, bears in London bears. When the game 35 to 16, this was an absolute drubbing bears Defense came to play, made it very hard and Trevor Lawrence and that offense to really do what they wanted to do. Especially made it hard for them to get into the end zone. Like they had their yardage. Trevor Lawrence was able to have a decent completion percentage, had a good amount of yards, a couple touchdowns, but they just weren't able to get into the end zone enough, especially with Chicago scoring as much as they did 35 points, like I said, caleb had 23 of 29, 226 yards, four touchdowns, one pick. Chicago ran the ball for over 150 yards. In this game they played a very good one. Chicago, from start to finish, just kind of took control and with the Jags being one of the worst teams in the NFL. Bears just kind of blew them away and the Jags really had no fight a little while after that. So the second half was mostly like a almost felt like a formality, but the Bears just kind of kept drubbing them and scoring. So it just kind of felt like this Jags team just really doesn't have much. Their coach is probably gonna get fired sooner rather than later and the Bears are looking better and better and Caleb is looking better and better every week. So I have to give him a lot of credit for just for based on how he started the season to weigh the way he looks now. He's just getting better and better. So let me go on to the next one here. Cardinals PackPackers 34-13. Packers win. Cardinals really couldn't get anything going offensively. Packers absolutely destroyed them. Jordan Love had a great game 22-32, 258 and four touchdowns. Played a great game. Josh Jacobs ran the ball decently well. It just felt like the Cardinals just could not get anything going offensively. Marvin Harris Jr had to go out in this game because he had a concussion. I believe Packers just played a great game Overall just could not be stopped in this one. Arizona Cardinals defense really isn't all that great, but I just feel like offensively they weren't able to do anything either. So Cardinals played a great game. I mean Packers played a great game. Jordan Love looking better and better as he's coming back from that injury um that he had on his knee um, packers are just a very, very explosive offensive team, very hard to stop, especially at home. Cardinals beat the Titans 20 to 17. Joe Flacco was the starter in this game. I think I said beforehand that um, it was supposed to be Anthony Richardson, but apparently, like last second before the game, flacco had to come out and start this game. He ended up playing well 22 of 38, 189 yards, two touchdowns. He played well. Titans just weren't able to do enough offensively to win this game. Joe Flacco just kind of took them At the end of the game. Fourth quarter Colts ended up scoring 10. Titans really couldn't get into the end zone. I think that was the difference. These two teams aren't necessarily all that great, it's just the Colts, with Joe Flacco at the helm, just made some better decisions, kind of got the ball down the field, got some touchdowns. And Will Levis just wasn't able to do enough. He only had 95 yards passing in this game. Like that's kind of how this game went. So, with all that being the case, will Levis just not making great decisions. He had another pick, took out a ball boy like, ended up running into a ball boy on the sideline and I think, messed up his knee, like it's just that's the kind of game that this was. So I didn't really watch all that much of it, but it's just that's the vibe that I got from rewatching it. So you know, kind of a kind of a sucky one there. For the Titans they look well, the left's just not great. Texans Patriots Texans win 41-21. Cj Stroud and that Texans offense kind of get back into a rhythm there. Cj 20-31, 192 yards, three touchdowns. One pick, joe Mixon, was back in this game definitely helped. He had 13 carries, 102 yards and a touchdown, on top of also having another 30 yards receiving in a touchdown. There. Stephon Diggs played great six receptions, 77 yards and a touchdown. Tank Dale had a decent. He's getting better and better every week ever since. Why am I forgetting his name? Oh, no, nico Collins got out. So Tank is becoming more and more ingratiated into the offense and getting more and more active. So he had seven receptions and getting more and more active. So he had seven receptions, 57 yards and a touchdown. I already mentioned Joe Mixon. Dalton Schultz had a few catches. This Houston Texans offense was just on a roll and could not be stopped. Patriots they ended up starting Drake May in this game. He actually played okay. He didn't play bad. He had a couple picks, but that is to be expected. He's play bad. He had a couple picks, but like that, that is to be expected. He's playing as a as a rookie in the NFL, so but he's still through for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Like he made some plays. He made the. He showed some flashes as to why he was a top quarterback in the draft. Again, he has his issues. He has some of his mechanics issues sometimes and he can make some mistakes and bad decisions, but I think he did show why the Patriots it was a good idea for the Patriots to pick him and hopefully he can get better and better every week and he can learn from his mistakes and get better as a quarterback, because that's what his Patriots team needs more than anything as a quarterback. But again, that Patriots team around him isn't all that great, but even with some of the guys that he had on his team. He made do with what he had. Demario Douglas, a guy that nobody's really heard of six receptions, 92 yards and a touchdown. Keyshawn Boutte three receptions and 59 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Henry had a touchdown three receptions, 41 yards. He made do with what he had. He could do with probably some more talent around him, especially at pass catcher, but he made some splash plays and showed why he is a dude of that caliber that got drafted as high as he did. So he had a good game. All the credit to him. But it's just that Patriots team is all that great. I think their two main objectives this year should be is Drake May going to be the guy and can we get a great draft pick to help him out somewhere else on the team should be their top two priorities for this Patriots team and Texans just look good, good as usual. Cj Stroup getting is a pretty good deal. Buccaneers-saints Buccaneers win 51-27. This game was like an absolute firecracker. For the first half, buccaneers scored 24. In the first half, saints scored 27 in the second quarter to make that game very close to halftime. But then the Buccaneers just kind of took control in the second half, scored 27 unanswered and really couldn't be stopped. Baker Mayfield 24 of 36, 325 yards and four touchdowns play great. Chris Godwin 11 receptions, 125 yards and two touchdowns. Godwin 11 receptions, 125 yards and two touchdowns. Tampa Bay ran the football like crazy. Sean Tucker 14 carries, 136 yards and a touchdown. Bucky Irving 14 carries, 81 yards and a touchdown. They ran for over 270 yards in this game. I think they had over 600, close to 600 yards total in this game. Baker, like I said, at 325. So like they were, they were getting up and down the football field and scoring points as well. Like they absolutely dominated the Saints team. The Saints on the other side offensively didn't do bad. Spencer Rattler played some decent football 22 of 40, 243 yards, a, a touchdown, two picks, though that definitely didn't help. But in that first half the game looked pretty close. Just in the second half they kind of couldn't get it together and they kind of stalled out offensively. But I do have to give Spencer Rattler some credit. Like he did play some good football and he was throwing the football around, throwing the pill, and I feel like he made some plays. But it's just they were missing some guys, some guys got hurt. They just didn't really do as much in the second half, eagles-browns. Eagles won the game 20-16. Browns suck still. Eagles, honestly, should have won this game by more. The fact that it was this close is kind of bad on them. Their coach why am I forgetting his name here? Nick Sirianni came. He had a. He looked like he cut his own hair. He looked like he looked insane. On the sideline he was yelling at fans, yelling at his own fans that were booing because of how bad this team looked at times. But you know they're able to do enough offensively. Aj Brown and Devonta Smith was back. Aj Brown had six receptions 116 yards and a touchdown. Javante Smith had three receptions, 64 yards and a touchdown. They were able to do enough offensively to beat a bad Cleveland Browns team. But again, the fact that it was as much of a struggle as it was, it's kind of sucked Chargers. No sorry Ravens commanders. Ravens won the game 30-23. This is probably the best game of the day. This is between two good offenses and it just felt like the Ravens kind of just being a little more efficient, especially running the football. They were just able to kind of finish it off in the end in a way that Washington wasn't ready to Lamar 323 yards passing, one touchdown, one pick off of 20 of 26 when it comes to passing attempts. Derrick Henry 24 carries, 132 yards and two touchdowns. He had an absolute monster of a game he played well. Lamar Jackson had another 40 yards, rushing as well. And then Zay Flowers probably had his best game as a Raven. He had nine carries, nine receptions, 132 yards Like he had most of that in the first half. He had like 120-something yards in the first half, like he had a dominant first. Because what happens is when you run as well as you do, washington looked like they just kind of committed to hey, we're going to put an extra guy in the box to try to stop Derrick Henry from running the football, to the guy in the box to try to stop Derrick Henry from running the football. But then that's what happens when now you have only one safety in the backfield and now you have a lot of room for a guy like Zay Flowers to find space and kind of get some good reception and get a lot of yardage. That's exactly what they did A lot of play action. They were able to take advantage of that and the Ravens played some very good ball. Jayden Daniels played great too. He went. Jane daniels played great too. He went 24, 35, 269 yards, two touchdowns, zero picks. He also ran for 22 yards. It was just at the when they had to get into the end zone at the end of the game. They just weren't able to get, get there and like, really score, score that last touchdown to really get the gap, get back into the game to tie it up again. But the washington commanders played some very good ball. Like like nobody is down on. Was Washington based on how they played in this game against probably one of the better teams in the NFL? And Jay Daniels showed out, he played some good football. All their playmakers came out and played well. Terry McLaurin had two touchdowns, 53 yards off, six receptions. This Washington Commanders team is only on the up and up and they're just getting better and better. All the credit to them, as they they in a loss. But again, I think this is one of those games where you can really take a. It is a what do they call it? Not a sentimental uh, I forget what they uh note metaphorical win, I don't know. But yeah, they can still be positive about this loss, even though they lost the game. I'll have to give them that credit and Washington probably is the best team in the NFC East right now. It's kind of crazy to say, but like they are an absolute juggernaut in the NFC East and they're probably gonna win that division and I think they're only getting better and better and Jane Daniels is playing some good football. Chargers beat the Broncos 23 to 16. Um, let's see, there's really not. The Broncos are just like. They look good some weeks, some weeks they don't. They did lose Patrick Sertain so their defense really did take a hit. But the Chargers like offense. Like I made the case in this game that the Chargers is kind of like a souped-up version of what the Broncos want to be. The Chargers were able to run the football effectively, had over 100 yards rushing. Justin Herbert came out. He went 21-34, 237 yards, one touchdown. He kind of made the plays necessary to kind of keep their offense rolling and got some good points, especially in the first half. They just kind of got up early in this game and just really didn't like. It was like 23-0 at the end of the third quarter. Denver kind of came back and made it a little bit closer by scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter, but by then it seemed like the game was already over, probably pretty well in hand for the Chargers, and that their defense for the Chargers played decently well for most of the game until Broncos came coming back. Bo Nix played okay 19 of 33, turner 16 yards, two touchdowns, one pick. Again, he's a rookie so I'm not going to get all over him and say he did terrible, but it just wasn't necessarily a great. Again, they didn't score until the fourth quarter. So that's how if they are offensively, they don't really run the football all that well. Bo Nix was the biggest rusher for this team. He had six carries for 61 yards. So it's not really all that great. It's just. You know, the Denver Broncos are still finding their way as a team and the Chargers are probably a little more established. They have the better quarterback. So I feel like they were able to win this football game, not easily, but again I feel like it was just they got to it early and the Broncos were just more able to come back. Got a few games left here. I have to go on a roll here. So Steelers beat the Raiders 32 to 13. Justin Fields played some pretty good ball. He missed a few passes here or there 14 to 24, 145 yards. He got sacked a few times. This off like we ran the football, like the running game was what kind of won the Pittsburgh Steelers a day? They had over 180 yards rushing. Najee Harris had 14 carries, 106 yards and a touchdown. Justin Fields had 59 yards and two touchdowns. Like that was really what powered the day. George Pickens got involved again like 53 yards receiving, like it was the rushing game that really made the day for the Steelers and the offense for the defense for the Steelers, led by TJ Watt, who had two fumble. He caused two fumbles in this game Rabbit, punching the ball out of somebody's hand so like he was an absolute monster in this game making game-breaking plays for the Steelers to kind of come up big and win this game 32-13. They won this game going away. It was the defense for the Steelers that really kind of kept the Raiders under wraps. Aiden O'Connell 27 of 40, 227 yards, a touchdown at pick. But it's just they weren't really able to make enough plays. After the first time they got the ball and kind of went all the way down the field and got the touchdown. After that they just weren't able to do anything offensively for the most part and the Steelers' defense kind of controlled this thing. And then the Steelersers offense just kind of made its way throughout the game and just got better and better as the game went along, got some short fields made, uh, took advantage of it and they managed to win win by scoring 32 points, something that has not happened this year. So all the credit to them. Um, great team win. Uh, it is news I do have to talk about this that Tomlin is giving Russell Wilson first team reps this week and potentially he has an opportunity to start this next game. I don't want to see Russell Wilson anywhere near the football field. To be totally honest with you, I think Justin Fields has played well enough this year to keep Russell Wilson on the sideline. But I just have this sneaking suspicion that Mike Tomlin likes Russell Wilson as a human and I feel like he just has this aching little thing in the back of his mind that he needs to see Russell Wilson play to have some type of. He just needs to see it, even though things are going well. We're 4-2, we're playing some good football. He just needs to see Russell Wilson on the football field. I just think that's my suspicion. That's what's happening here. I would hope I'm hoping against hope that I'm wrong about this and that he's just playing the mind game still and he's just trying to get the best out of Justin Fields every day. Maybe that's the case, I'm hoping that is, but I just have this feeling that he really needs to see Russell Wilson play, even though Russell Wilson is not the long-term answer. It needs to see Russell Wilson play even though Russell Wilson is not the long-term answer. It's Justin Fields and he's played well enough and there's nothing Russell Wilson's going to give you that Justin Fields hasn't. And I think, with the way the offensive line looks right now hurt and battered and we lose lost three starters already this year and, like I'm not, they're definitely not gonna be back anytime soon. So, like the fact the offensive line is not gonna be good, and with the plays that Justin Fields can make running the football and like he's a weapon that way with his legs, it's something Russell Wilson can't do at all. So even if Russell Wilson gives you a little bit more passing the football, he's a sitting duck and with our offensive line not looking great, it just doesn't help. So I just don't know how there's any chance in the world why this is a good idea. But Mike Tomlin has this infatuation with him and I think this might be the move that gets him fired if things don't go well. Um, I just hope that this is all a big charade and I hope that Russell Wilson doesn't see the field at all. But I just have a thing that you know Tomlin needs to see it and I'm like this. I'm like this might annoy me to the point where I'm ready to fire the guy. It really might. I might be at that point now. But again, great win against the Raiders. I just hope Justin Fields goes out there and starts against the Jets next week. I really hope so, because if not, I will go on an absolute tirade. Lions destroy the Cowboys 47-9. Absolute, just drubbing. Cowboys 47 to 9 absolute, just drubbing. Cowboys look terrible offensively. Defensively there's really not much to say, man, the Lions just took care of business. Offensively defensively, the Cowboys were at home and got embarrassed. Dak Prescott threw two picks like they just were not able to do anything, especially getting into the end zone. They just couldn't right they. They were able to get up and down the field, but it's just not even up and down. They kind of just were kind of ineffective at that too. Uh, dak threw the ball 33 times. Cooper Rush, I also played threw a lot another 11 times. It's just this cow does Cowboys. I don't even, I can't even like make good content talk about how bad this Cowboys team is, because they're just so awful. But I do have to give the Detroit Lions credit for looking as good as they have over the last few weeks and if they keep playing the way they're playing, that night, that day, it's going to be not many teams that can beat them and they are going to be a force in the playoffs. But this Cowboys team is so bad that I don't want to take too much away from it and really think like this Cowboys team just knows when they lose, they lose bad. When they win, it's close. This team is just not built to win Long term. I get it. They didn't have Micah Parsons or Demarcus Lawrence on their defensive line, but that wouldn't have helped, not the way this game went. They wouldn't have helped at all the way this Lions team destroyed them. It's just bad. The Lions did lose Aiden Hutchinson in this game to a very bad injury. I think they said he broke his tibia on his leg and he'll be out for a while who knows how long, but it was a gruesome injury. Sucks, they lost him. They're saying that maybe they might trade for Max Crosby. Who knows, that'd be a crazy trade if they make that happen, because the dude's a monster. But you know that Lions team, even with the injury, they they drubbed the Cowboys and they looked very good doing it. Falcons Panthers Falcons win the game 38 to 20. Kirk Cousins played some good ball. Panthers kind of come back to earth, like they look really good the first few games with Andy Dalton, but then offensively they're just kind of coming back. Andy Dalton's the bubble burst on him to where he's not really playing all that great of football anymore. That team for the Panthers really isn't all that great and I just think that they've come back down to earth. In general I think the Falcons are just a better football team. Went out there, took care of business. Kirk Cousins did his thing. They were able to run the football effectively. They had close to 200 yards rushing in this game. Drake London did his thing. All their playmakers came out there and made plays. They just played some very good football and beat a team that they were much better than and took care of business Bengals-Giants. Bengals won the game 17-7. This game was pretty close for the most part. For the most of the game I think the Giants defense kind of came to play and they made things very difficult on that Bengals offense. Joe Burrow made it work, made some plays when he could, but he was getting absolutely destroyed back there. He got sacked four times in this game and again. If it wasn't for the Giants offense being so terrible, this game could have been even closer than what it was. But it's just that Giants offense was just so inconsistent and Daniel Jones played kind of bad in this game that I just think the Bengals just kind of had to hunker down and really make some plays late, late on in the game to kind of put keep the game in hand. But honestly, as soon as they scored that first touchdown it's kind of felt like as long as this Bengals didn't like terribly mess up, they were going to win this football game and this was honestly that first touchdown. Joe Burrow had like a 40 something yard touchdown run, like Like he was 47 yard touchdown run, which was like insane to see because it's the first one he's had, especially of that yardage. He just kind of blew past everybody. But it's just, this game shouldn't have been as close as it was. It's kind of a bad thing, but the Bengals defense made some good plays, made it hard in the Giants offense, but again, that Giants offense isn't all that great in the first place. But, uh, good for the Bengals. They really needed this one. And now, two and four, they're still trying to dig themselves out of a hole. Um, this is a game that if they lost this one, this would have been very bad for them. So the fact they got this win definitely, uh, one big step on trying to get themselves back into contention again. Um, they just really needed this one. Didn't look as pretty as it probably could have been, but, uh, but they got the win. Last but not least, bills Jets Bills win the game 23-20. It's funny because they fired Robert Sala and then the first game they have that guy was in charge of the defense, of course, and the first game back their defense looked terrible. Kind of funny how that works. You get rid of the best defense coach on your football team and the defense started looking bad, even though defense was good before he got fired. The Jets' offense didn't really play all that great. Aaron Rodgers threw a very bad pick at the end of the game to end the game. When he was throwing to Mike Williams he threw him under the bus afterwards because he said he didn't run the right route or something like that. Again, it was a tough game. I was watching this game and the Yankee game at the same time so it was kind of tough. But because I bet on the game so I didn't really. I was kind of switching in between. Josh Allen made the plays necessary to win the football game when necessary and Aaron Rodgers made the one grave mistake that he couldn't. Um Buffalo was able to run the football effectively, had 149 yards rushing. Um Josh Allen made some big Josh Allen plays when he had to. They didn't really have a lot of great like one big pass, like pass catcher that really took control, but a lot of guys got receptions and help towards winning this football game. But again, this Jets defense just did not play all that well, especially losing their head coach who was their best defensive mind. It just kind of sucks how not sucks, but it just kind of shows how you get rid of your best guy and the defense starts not playing well. Aaron Rodgers doesn't play all that great of football, loses the game and it just doesn't look great. But they go after this game and now they have traded for Devontae Adams. That's their Like they don't have to protect him more Like Aaron Rodgers needs to be protected and I feel like he was gimpy. He couldn't really move around like he wanted to. Like he's an old man man. He's out there on one leg limping around, can't really move like he wants to, and he's trying to go out there and pass football around and they go and get another wide receiver. I pass football around and they go and get another wide receiver. I don't think that fixed the issue. Now their defense is not looking all that great. Like maybe they'll get better, but it just kind of. I don't think it's a. It's a. What do they call it? Not anomaly? Oh, what is it? It starts with an A, I forget what it's called. Oh, no, it's very likely that they lose. Their defense gets a little worse after losing their defensive head coach, the guy that was a good defensive mind that knows what he's doing. They lose him, their defense gets worse. Something is kind of connected there. So I just think the issues that they have. Devontae Adams will make them better, but will he fix the issues that they have? I don't think so. I just think they issues that they have. Devontae Adams will make them better, but will he fix the issues that they have? I don't think so. I just think they're going all in to where they have to. They're going to make sure that Aaron Rodgers doesn't have anything to complain about if they don't end up winning the games they need to. This year they're 2-4. They have been playing great football offensively and now their defense isn't looking good either after coming out of this Buffalo Bills game. Who knows, maybe the Devontae Adams thing will change their season. I don't think. I'm not a guy that thinks so. And it doesn't change the fact that Aaron Rodgers is still old. It doesn't make him younger. It doesn't make him more nimble, coming off the injury from last year. Like it's just I don't, I just don't know. I think Aaron Rodgers like doesn't like to take accountability and like he throws other people under the bus, and it's just like it's just a big mess there and dysfunctional teams just do, just do dysfunctional things like firing their head coach in the middle of the season when he's not the issue, um, but it's just, I don't know it's. Aaron Rodgers has all the power in this organization. If he wanted something to happen, it happened and they got his boy, devonta Adams. He's a great player. He's still a great receiver. He'll make their team better. I just don't think it'll make them better in the way that they need to in order to win more football games, and it's just, uh, definitely doesn't help. Garrett will, so I get, I guess it'll make it a little bit easier for him to get some catches in yardage. But again, you're adding another dude that aaron rogers probably trust more than him. So I just don't know how that dynamic is going to last long term. But, uh, yeah, it's, it's a, it's a. It's a little bit of a mess there in New York, but at least they've added a nice little shiny toy, uh, that of in Devontae Adams, to make things look a little better. Um, but it's just, uh, it's just a bad spot. It's a bad spot. Um, we'll see the Steelers will. I'll be watching because they'll be playing the Steelers this upcoming Sunday. Devontae Adams will be playing from what they, so I'll see how they look on Sunday night. So we'll see how that goes. Um, I think that's all. That's it about all the games. I'll mention the records here. Um, this past week I went almost perfect, other than the Thursday night football game. I picked everything perfectly. I was. I went what is it? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen. I went 13 and one for all the games this week. So I went great. I think jace only got one, two. He had three games wrong, so he even had a great week. It's just, I went almost perfect. So a lot of credit to me. Um, I'll have. I'll have the total records done on Friday. To where? Uh, we'll have the. We'll have the total records for the next pod. But let me go ahead and start us with the Thursday night football game. Let us do our picks there. I did get the pick from Jace um before the pod, so I will be able to give you his pick. It's Broncos Saints. Saints are at home. We are going to pick the same. We're both picking the Saints to win this game. Saints are at home. We are going to pick the Saints. We're both picking the Saints to win this game. Saints are at home. I think they're going to have, I don't think Derek Carr will be back for this game. Let me see. Derek Carr is doubtful, actually. No, they say he might return tomorrow, so who knows if he's going to be the starter or not? But I do think Spencer Rattler played well enough to show that he can do some things. But they are going to be without Rashid Shahid and Chris Olave Dang. I wish I would remember that when I told Jays you know what? Forget it, I'm not going to change my pick now. I'm going to stick with it, because that would be unfair if I know this information now and change it. So I did pick the Saints before the podcast started. I'll stick with it and we'll both pick the Saints and we'll both pick the Saints. I do think that makes it a little weird now that they don't have those two wide receivers. That kind of sucks Dang it. Even if they do get Derek Carr back, that would oh man, man. I wish I could put the Broncos down, but I'm going to stick to my word. I'll stick to it. Since Jason doesn't have the opportunity to switch himself, we'll both pick the Saints and that'll be about it. We'll talk about what happens in this game on Friday when we come back for the next pod, but that's about it here, so I will go ahead and finish off the pod here. So if you've been listening for a while, we appreciate you and hope that you, that you're having a great time sticking around, listen to us talk about sports. If you are just now listening, same for you. Hopefully you like us enough to stick around and listen to us talk about sports in the dumbest way possible. And if you guys all do like us and enjoy the content we put out on a weekly basis, if you could do a couple things for us, we would appreciate if you could like the podcast, subscribe to the podcast, rate the podcast five stars, share the podcast with friends, family, enemies, anybody you feel like could enjoy the content we put out on a weekly basis, a couple of times a week. We would definitely love if you could do that. And, last but not least, if you could follow us on twitter and or x, whatever you would like to call it. At jb sports pod is the podcast handle. At giovante boozer is my handle. At jace boozer. One is jace's, and there's a way to handle the podcast too, so I will go ahead and end it off now. So thank you, thank you guys for listening. Hope you guys have a great day, great night and, uh, we'll see you on the next one, on Friday. Bye y'all, we'll see you next time.
