What Are You Committed to?
(Season 2, Episode 3) To commit fully to something is to not hold anything back. Let's see what Jesus Christ had to say about commitment.
What Are You Committed To?
Today I want to ask you—What are you committed to?
Proverbs 16:3 reads: “Commit your activities to the LORD, and your plans will be established.”
This doesn’t just mean to pray over everything we do. Although that is good and is something we should do, I believe that the philosophy behind this verse runs much deeper.
One definition of “commit” is to pledge or bind (a person or an organization) to a certain course or policy.
To live a life in service to God is to commit fully. In the book of Matthew (16:24–25), we find Jesus saying: “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.”
In Mark (12:29–31), we find a scribe asking Jesus which command is the most important. Jesus answers: “The most important is, Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no command greater than these.”
In that passage we find Christ telling us to worship God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength. That is, our affections, our spirit, our intelligence, and our will.
Let’s circle back to Proverbs 16:3. “Commit your activities to the LORD, and your plans will be established.”
When we read this verse in light of how Christ told us to live, we can see a fuller, more complete image of what it means to “commit our activities to the Lord.” I believe the call here is for us to give it all. To not hold anything back.
What is God calling you to do today? Does he have access to every part of your life or are there parts you’ve decided to keep for yourself? I believe this is something that every follower of Christ needs to ask themselves again and again. Only then can we remain aware of what He is calling us to do. And then we can know that we are in alignment with His plan for our lives.
