Barry's Dad was a scholar, his Mum a machinist, both parents were immigrants and he was a confessed computer geek and introvert, so communicating the nuances of pain as a Physio was going to be an uphill battle. And it was.

At 10 years of age, Jason had his first 'God' moment while watching Saturday morning cartoons, and this moment has guided his decisions ever since.
Jason was a reluctant practice owner promising his wife would never own a practice. Yet he grew his garage-based business to 140 locations and kicked the anthill called franchising. He only left his garage when his wife suggested the driveway wasn't the most professional of waiting rooms. His business, Back in Motion eventually sold for around $100 million.
For $200 Jason recommends the following books;

Biography
Jason is a dynamic businessman and award-winning leadership expert in high demand. Failed medical missionary, reluctant businessman, unqualified franchisor, all leading to accidental founder and CEO of Australia's largest physiotherapy network at the time, the Back In Motion Health Group, creating an unlikely success that surprises him even more than those around him.
Ernst Young entrepreneur-of-the-year, Jason believes the opportunity of a lifetime comes around about once a day. He made a career out of getting it wrong more than he got it right - but knowing when he did get it right, how to repeat it over and again. More street-smart than book-smart, he never wanted a business, and yet ended up with over 140 of them supported by a team of 700+ and eventually selling for over $100m. He started six brands over 20 years and closed or sold five of them.
Initially, a leader by chance, Jason has now mentored over 1,000 others like him through the Iceberg Leadership Institute. A regular contributor on business, leadership, and health-related topics, you can hear his thoughts on podcasts, television, radio, and online channels. Whilst he has written a few internationally-acclaimed books, he prefers to read those of others.
Having presented to over 60,000 people internationally, Jason feels there is more at stake in small intimate groups where he can't hide the whites of his eyes from the very same he is engaging. Director on many boards, chairman of a few. Socially conservative; economically liberal, compassionately capitalistic, and politically disillusioned. Giving time and resources to numerous social initiatives to empower the poorest of the world's poor, his future is now in missional philanthropy.

On balance, Jonathan wasn't meant to be a Physiotherapist. More likely an auto mechanic (family trend), professional drummer (first 10 years of work), scuba diving instructor or water sports co-ordinator (next 10 years of work). Yet he found himself at a tipping point in his early 30's. Offered an exclusive, highly paid all-inclusive job as a dive master on a liveaboard boat based in idyllic Seychelles OR stay in wet and cold England, scrimping and living in nursing quarters while studying hard for several years and maybe having a job at the end of it.
We talk about life before and after this pivotal decision, touching on subjects;

Michael comes from a strong medical pedigree, and with his high level of sports participation and associated injuries, developed an early awareness of Physiotherapy, and specifically sports. These were the very early days of sports physiotherapy, there were no post-graduate courses, Cybex had just arrived and mentors were critical.
After a short period working in a dedicated sports clinic in Adelaide, a new opportunity arose in Melbourne as a clinician and investor in a sports clinic. This pattern repeats several times in Michael's life. Meet someone, be offered a new opportunity, and take it on. Repeat. From clinician to investor, to business manager, owner of single to multiple clinics and then into Stem Cell Therapy and writing a book.
Michael's journey has touched on so many of the possible realms in which a Physiotherapist can move. He shares his thoughts on;

Jon's passion for helping people has been a common thread. As a clinician providing F2F care, as a researcher ensuring he is providing evidence-informed care, as an educator by spreading this knowledge and as a company director gather similar-minded clinicians, collaborating across disciplines and raising money to fund clinically focused research. Plus, he spends 6 months knee-deep in seawater, coaching juniors in surf life-saving.
In our conversation, Jon shares a common pathway; graduation, hospital rotations, overseas work/travel, and returning to Australia to get serious. But he was ahead of the curve and with a chronic pain referral base, a room and several thousand articles, he developed in isolation, a model of management in the early 1990s for this group of patients. This approach was to arrive later on the Physio treatment horizon and was called the bio-psycho-social model.
Throughout his clinical and research careers, Jon has sought to further his understanding of pain management through self-education (completed Master's, PhD and Specialisation) and collaboration (Managing Director of Advance Healthcare with 60 doctors, physios and psychologists on staff).

Libby and I shared undergraduate and later on post-graduate training together. I have always admired her tenacity and conviction to go her own way. In our conversation, Libby described how a range of strategic decisions she made through her career, have now culminated in financial independence so that in her 50s (another strategic goal) she can do the things she wants to do.
As we come to the end of our conversation, we look back and realise that the early decision of having to choose between a career in health, economics or architecture, was not necessary and that with time all three have inadvertently been achieved.

Anna-Louise had 2 passions in addition to becoming a Physio. Following graduation, she realised bench warming wasn't for her (short-term patch-up), and neither were medium-term repairs, she wanted to make longer-term, habit-forming changes for her patients. So as a single mum, with 2 children under 2, she took a very bold step and created Physiocise. There was a method in her madness as Anna-Louise explains, but to place this decision in context, it was before the Physio + Pilates wave had arrived.
Anna-Louise has since taken many other bold steps, forging links, and partnerships and breaking new ground using her Physiotherapy skills and a warm smile to create products and services that didn't exist before.
Probably the closest we have to a Physio Celebrity, Anna-Louise explains how this occurred and how it ties in with her two other passions, teaching and journalism.

You might say that Mick did it tough getting to his final dream of being a Sports Physiotherapist. With too many 'distractions' he didn't gain direct entry, and only just scraped into Exercise Physiology with a very late 'cash-only' offer. Then, after overseas travel, and on the back of his rural upbringing, he snapped up a place in a newly minted Physio program in Townsville @ James Cook University.
However, once his ball was rolling it hasn't stopped. With stints in Townsville covering rugby, Newcastle covering soccer and in Melbourne, netball, Mickha amassed a range of Sports Physiotherapy experience in a range of high-performance teams. He also developed a deliberated focus on ACL prevention and rehabilitation.

This conversation was recorded with Dr Linda Khong while she was in Singapore, celebrating the Chinese New Year.
During our conversation I was struck by how Linda has traversed so many aspects of our profession; clinician + academic, private + public practice and Asian + Australian culture.
Linda explains how she started out with the Singaporean family's dream of a degree in business and the goal of making a pot of gold when a couple of experiences changed the direction of her professional and personal life, and how they continue to be core principles today.
For young Physiotherapists considering where they want to be in 5 or 10 years professionally, Linda has some sage words of experience to share + she has a few life truths that are also worth absorbing.
A lovely conversationalist, I hope you will enjoy this delightful Physio+10 episode with Linda as much as I did.
Thank you for listening.

I worked at Ascend Physiotherapy for 8 years, and meanwhile, in 2012 I started my Clinical Masters in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, which I finished in 2013. I have always been heavily involved in Sports, working largely in rugby and netball in my earlier days. I started working with the West Coast Fever in 2013, and took over as Head Physio in 2016 and 2017. In 2018 I then moved to Canada, and worked with the Canadian National Women’s Rugby Team until moving back to Perth in 2021, where I now work with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) as an embedded Physiotherapist in the Swimming Program. In 2022 I was Head Physio for the Australian Women’s hockey team (Hockeyroos), including the Hockey World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. I was also lucky enough to work with the Australian swim team (Dolphins) at the 2022 World Short Course Championships. My next role is to work with the National Australian artistic swimming team, as well as return to rehab clinical work.d

Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with Associate Professor Dale Edgar. In talking with Dale I came to appreciate the nature of managing a burns patient covers the full gamut of Physiotherapy skills - that is you need to manage physical (i.e., injured muscles, skin, bone, nerve), psychological & social components. Secondly, it is over a long period of time 18-24 months. This has provided Dale with a unique perspective on the health continuum, something that I think could be better utilised in the current model of reactive Physiotherapy in private practice.
Dale strongly advocates for the benefits of baseline measurements, including quality of life measures and working out how we can better serve our patient communities through employing preventative strategies targeted to their needs.

Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with Dave Hall (aka Disco Duk Duk). We are all unique in the way we practice our profession of Physiotherapy. However, some more so and I think you will agree that Dave brings his unique set of skills from outside Physiotherapy and incorporates them to create something completely amazing.
I first met Dave when attending an Occupational Health training course and immediately realised how different and engaging his teaching style/facilitation was. The next time we met he was clad in green and gold spandex, which was entirely appropriate given the situation, but he will tell you more in the podcast.

Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with Ass. Prof. Bronwen Ackermann. I am continually amazed when meeting Physios on this podcast, about the diversity and creative intellect they have applied to new areas of clinical practice. Bronwen takes her core Physiotherapy skills and applied them to the niche of performing artists and in particular musicians. She quickly realised that these highly talented and skilled performers actually knew little about how their own bodies functioned or the loads they placed on them with practice and performance, and so started her journey.
Bronwen has not just treated these performers, she has led panel discussions, developed course curriculum, conducted research and advised Australian and overseas performers, Universities and orchestras in this expanding field. As a result, performers now have the opportunity to better understand how to limit performance injuries, and how to better manage anxiety when performing and practitioners understand how to assist performers in better managing their injuries.
Thanks for listening.
