In this episode we are circling back to make sure we all know what Brain BS™ is and the importance of separating fact from fiction in our minds in order to live consciously.  Way too often we set goals for ourselves and we fall short because we are not paying attention to our subconscious and unconscious programming. That programming comes from our parents, siblings, class mates, friends, and society in general. At some point we have to wake up and realize that we get to keep the beliefs that serve us and discard the ones that don't. This is where the majority of our suffering comes from.

I specifically use the example of the Brain BS™ that comes up with moving and packing in this recording. When you begin to realize that thoughts are optional and they really do contribute to your life experience, you learn how to become more aware of them and feel the emotions that come with them without making them a problem. Once you do that, experiences that used to be very stressful become much more manageable. I kept this one short and sweet because I only have one more day to pack so I need to get back at it!

Understanding Brain BS in Daily Life

Speaker 1

This is Maureen Kafkas, the BrainBS co-chair, to tell you about the episode today. But before I get to that, I want to remind you that the BrainBS podcast is here to offer you a psycho-spiritual approach to life that will inspire you to live consciously and make your overall health a priority. While it can enhance your quality of life dramatically, it is not meant to be a replacement for a needed intervention. So if you are struggling with your physical, emotional or mental well-being, please seek the professional support that you need. All right, well, before we get into the episode today, I'm just going to give you some updates, and my update is I've been packing, packing, packing, packing for 10 days and I'm exhausted and I'm tired, but I feel really good because we got a lot done and it's, um, it's becoming more real that we are actually moving to Santa Barbara full-time and that we are going to be putting this house on the market soon, a ranch house in the Winneka area which is, uh, really in demand right now. So the timing's good for us and, given what we had to do to get our house in California, I appreciate that, the synchronicity of all of it. I don't really have any other updates because, well, I will say one thing that's kind of crazy. Here we are in Chicago and it's warmer here almost the whole trip than it has been in California. So weird winter they're having here. Pleasant, I guess, but it is kind of odd when it's warmer here. In fact, I'm playing pickleball today, which I'm really looking forward to to get a little break from the monotony of packing and cleaning. But Bobby and I did a great job. We're on the ball, we're making things happen and I'm noticing brain BS coming up around the packing. So I decided to make today's episode about brain BS, reviewing what it is and how it can impact packing. I'm keeping it short and sweet because I'm still not done packing. I've got one more day left and then I will resume next week with a collaboration podcast. So sit back, settle in.

This is episode 188 of the RAINBS podcast, especially with what we talked about today. But this is episode 188 of the Power of Community and Collaboration in Santa Barbara podcast and it's called A Review of Exactly what is Brain BS. Hi, my name is Maureen Kafkas and I'm the Brain BS coach when I learned that the average human brain has over 60,000 thoughts a day and that most of them are lies and what I call brain BS and that they cause needless suffering. I started to learn how to separate the fact from I call brain BS and that they cause needless suffering. I started to learn how to separate the fact from fiction in my mind and I've never looked back. I truly believe that living consciously, understanding how our brains work and learning to feel our feelings are necessary for an empowering and fulfilling life. I bring my expertise and extensive knowledge to inspire people in the Santa Barbara area and beyond to learn how to live consciously, tap into their personal power and become leaders in their community. Hello and welcome back to the podcast.

Speaker 1

I am recording this in Winneka, illinois. I have been in Illinois the last 10 days packing up our house and getting ready to sell it and put it on the market. It has been a ton of work. Lots of brain BS has come up around it, so I thought what a great opportunity to share a little review of what brain BS is, especially for people who are packing and moving up.

Speaker 1

And we all do that in our lives and it's like one of the most stressful things you ever do, and I think that, well before I get ahead of myself, let's talk a little bit about what brain bs is first. So brain bs is your subconscious and unconscious programming that determines your reality. You might have conscious thoughts and goals that you want to achieve, but if you have hidden goals and a hidden agenda where your subconscious and unconscious wants to stay safe and run for the safe, run for the cave and and stay small, then that's always going to win over anything conscious you can do. It's very powerful and many people don't even don't even become aware of their brain BS. They don't even know it's there.

Speaker 1

So let me give you an example of brain BS. It's like, say, you have a person in your life and you think you have them all figured out and you do not think that it's your opinion of them. You are certain it is factual. That is just the way that person is. Well, that is not factual, that is your thought. And when you have a thought many times over, it becomes a belief. And just because you believe it and you could get a hundred other people to believe it, it doesn't mean it's true. I mean politics is a perfect example, but I'm too tired to even go there today to use that example. Example, but I'm too tired to even go there today to use that example.

Speaker 1

But I will say Donald Trump, most polarizing person ever. Some people love him and they think he's great. Other people hate him and they think he's awful. What's factual, what's not? Everybody looks at life through their own primary subconscious brain filters, their own view that they got when they were little from their life experiences. That shapes the way that you look at life. So one of mine was because I'm number nine out of 10, was nobody cares what number nine has to say, and I really believe this.

Speaker 1

I would say a lot of things like people think I've been outspoken my whole life, but I wasn't about the things that really mattered to me. I wasn't about making myself a priority and about making my needs come first over other people's and disappointing them. No, instead, I kept saying yes and my resentment went higher and higher and it became worse and worse until I blew here and there and that really tapping into that anger and resentment and really embracing it is what let me go to the, the next level of being actually honest and authentic and and truthful, which you think more people would be doing. That on the surface, but the truth is it's really really really difficult to get to that point in your life. It's not something that just happens. You have to do the work. That's what my Mastering Brain BS for Success course is. It's free and it's on my website if you want it. And, honestly, this course is the foundation of learning to live consciously and it's what changed my life.

Speaker 1

It's what made me realize that you could do whatever you want with your life, that literally the only limitations we put on ourselves are usually with our mind. Now, I'm not talking about physical limitations and people in major poverty or in other parts of the world that don't have access to the same things as me. I'm just talking in general about the average person. Most of our suffering comes from the thoughts that we're having. We have over 60,000 thoughts a day and the majority of them are lies, and they almost always put us at a disadvantage and usually in a victim mode. So that's a little review of brain BS.

Speaker 1

Now, there's all kinds of brain BS, so I couldn't possibly do a whole podcast episode on it, but I think one of the biggest ones when it comes to moving and packing up a house is you want it to be over. So Eckhart Tolle would say that's rejecting reality and it causes urgency and impatience and frustration and snapping at each other, like Bob and I have done a couple times. It is this idea that you can't stay in the present moment that you want it to. You want to be past it and in our case we have. Like we have another house that we're going to eventually have to pack up and we have a renovation ahead of us. So it's perfect for me, because it's so much. There's no way we're going to get through this fast. As much as I like to be speedy and efficient to get everything done, this just isn't that kind of situation. So this kind of also reflects what it's like to try to be an entrepreneur.

Speaker 1

You just have to keep going. You just have to do one task after another, keep going towards your goal, not giving up, not getting anxious, not getting frustrated. Or you can get all those things, but don't really buy into it. Feel the feelings for a moment and then let them go, release them and look at them as a gift they are, reframe them in a way that works for you. I'm not suggesting Pollyanna here, but I am suggesting that you don't dwell in negativity and get caught up in all your brain BS, because it doesn't feel good, it lowers your frequency, it doesn't help the people around you, it doesn't serve a purpose.

Speaker 1

Now there's a lot of people out there will tell you that I'm trying to be too positive, but I'm telling you I'm doing this work and I'm I am not bypassing, I'm not spiritually bypassing anything. I am literally staying in the present moment, accepting it the way it is, and I'm figuring out what the gift is in the uncomfortable emotion. That's it. And I'm doing that over and over again and I'm getting comfortable being uncomfortable. So I'm comfortable with the chaos of everything that's going on right now in our lives, with the lack of certainty, the not knowing what's coming next, who the contractors are going to be, how we're going to do you know the specifics for the drawings for the house getting the permit, how long it's going to take. It's like it's all going to take, however long it takes.

Speaker 1

Mark Allen said it in his book A Visionary Life it's all going to happen in an easy, relaxed manner, in a healthy and positive way, in its own perfect time, when you can get into that state and you don't have that urgency, because that urgency is always brain BS and the shoulds. I should be doing this. I should be doing, that. This should have been like that. This would have happened if that would have. That's all brain BS too. It's not even real. It's a concept that humans made up to torture themselves. All that's here is the present moment and what's real.

Speaker 1

So today, for our last day of packing up, I'm staying present and I'm just going from one thing to another and I know that I'm not going to be packing tomorrow. So this is my last shot at getting as much done as I get done and whatever I get done is what I get done and we're setting it up so that we don't do the closing to put a lot of pressure on ourselves. So we're not. We're not open to closing before the end of the summer, which gives us plenty of time to get back here and get the household. It's just, life is so much easier if you can not be.

Santa Barbara Biz Interview Update

Speaker 1

Sometimes you have to be in a rush, like for sure, and I love that. I have that in me. I remember when I used to be a waitress and I would train people or an occupational therapist in the acute care setting in the hospital. You had to move, you have to be fast, you have to be efficient. So I love it about myself that I have those skills, but sometimes you just have to slow the hell down and you have to calm down and you have to go with the flow. When you're trying to force everything and push things and you're not just allowing for things to unfold and you're not trusting the process, it's going to cause you a lot of suffering. So that is.

Speaker 1

I'm going to stop there today because I have a lot to do and I do have an interview next week with a Santa Barbara native who Joe Parker, who's the admin of the Santa Barbara Biz Facebook group, and I really enjoy talking to him and I can't wait to share that with you. But this week I wanted to keep it short and sweet so that I could get back to packing. I know you learned something valuable here. See you next episode. Hope you enjoyed the podcast today as much as I enjoyed creating it for you. If you're inspired, I appreciate a five-star review and sharing podcasts with anyone you know so that I can have a bigger ripple effect on people around me, and you can too. If you want to learn more about me, you can go to wwwthebrainbscom and you can schedule a connection call with me or sign up to be a part of a BrainBS experiment. See you next episode.
