World Sickle Cell Day is June 19 and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) has resources to assist those who need them . Today we speak with Shantia Fitzgerald who has worked in the public health field for over 22 years. She holds an undergraduate degree in Social Work and a master’s degree in Health Systems Management. Shantia has held roles such as Medical Assistant, Patient Educator, linkage to care coordinator, and program manager where she developed outreach and community engagement programs. She spent the majority of her professional care focusing on the infectious disease field with the HIV/AIDS population. More recently her passion has grown for health care education and workforce development programs for members of the community. Shantia enjoys her role in community health working with Community Health Workers because it allows her to the opportunity to personally engage members of the community to not only work on enhancing the lives of clients for whom they will serve but more importantly for themselves. Mrs. Fitzgerald is currently the Community Impact and Educational manager for the National Sickle Cell Disease Association of America where she trains and supports the educational program for Community Health Workers. She is also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., where she serves as the International Executive Assistant to the Sorority's International President and a member of the Harford County Board of Women's Commission in Maryland.
