In last Sunday's podcast, we talked about the Gaokao. After that, someone asked me, how strict is the Gaokao? Will people cheat? Cheating means deceiving others during exams or competitions. I think this question is very interesting, so today let's talk about whether cheating is possible in the Gaokao and if there are people cheat in Gaokao.

The Gaokao may be one of the strictest exams in the world. Do you know about security checks? In China, we have security checks before boarding airplanes, trains, and subways. Students also have to go through security checks before entering the exam hall. They have to pass through security gates, and if they have mobile phones, electronic watches, electronic glasses, etc., they cannot enter the exam hall or take the exam. This way, students cannot cheat using electronic devices. Staff members also check the students' ID cards, comparing the photo on the ID card to the student's appearance. This makes it very difficult for students to ask others to take the exam for them.

With the Gaokao being so strict, are there still people who cheat? Yes, there are. Although the Gaokao is very strict, there are still people who want to cheat. Some people may try to bribe staff members so they can bring electronic devices into the exam hall. This year, there was a student who somehow brought a mobile phone into the exam hall, took a photo of the math paper, and sent it to someone else to get the answers. Later, it was discovered that she cheated, and she might not have her Gaokao results counted. Besides losing her Gaokao results, she might also face imprisonment. Yes, cheating in the Gaokao is illegal. Illegal means doing something that is against the law. In China, there is a crime called exam cheating. Those who cheat in the Gaokao may face imprisonment.

Ten years ago, there were more people cheating in the Gaokao, but now, it is very rare. This is because, firstly, cheating in the Gaokao is becoming increasingly difficult. Secondly, cheating in the Gaokao is illegal, and both the students who cheat and the staff who help them cheat are breaking the law. If cheating is discovered, they are likely to face imprisonment. I think this is a good thing. Many students have studied hard for many years to prepare for the Gaokao. If someone cheats, it is very unfair to these students.
