Ep09: Creative Fast: 60 Days Without Creating Art
Dec 17, 2021 Episode 9
Sam Fraulino

Have you ever fasted?   That break from food where you know you want it really bad, but you can't.   We look at things as taking a break or fasting from food, but what exactly does that mean?

I created a creative fast for myself as an artist, and wanted to clear my thoughts, work on my creativity, and rethink my artistic goals all while having no hands on creation of art of any kind.

As an artist, watercolor artist and abstract painter, so for the last 40 years I have been creating art and painting of some kind.  I decided a few months ago, I needed a change, I needed to challenge myself artistically.  So I decided to fast, a creative fast of no artwork or creation of drawings, sketches, ideas of any kind for sixty days!

I did think about intermittent fasting, as you would with food, but I know myself, once I start a painting I get obsessed with it, or an idea or concept turns into a few series of paintings, so I knew that wasn’t the approach to cleansing my creative tank.   I needed a true break.

Join me in this episode as I talk about that experience, as I dig deeper into what was that process like and how I think it will affect my art and creative skills in the future.  Hopefully this podcast will get you thinking about creativity, whether it’s drawing, painting, writing or music.  We’ll see how this creative fast affected me, how it made me look at my own creativity and mindfulness of what it’s like to be an artist in today’s world.

Digital media, social media, and many other distractions of life do play a key role in our daily creative lives, so we’ll discuss those effects along with myself sharing my view points on art , how this sixty day void of not creating any traditional art affected me as an artist.
