Who Is Katanji Brown Jackson is really great for your upper elementary age students. It walks you through who Katanji Brown Jackson is our first ever African American female Supreme Court Justice and I learned a lot of really cool things about Justice Katanji Brown Jackson. It talks about her moments in the beginning of her getting appointed to the Supreme Court and it brings you all the way back to her livelihood in Florida with her family. Her father was a scholar, mother a very highly educated and administrator and going to Harvard, learning about speaking up for herself and the other Black students on the Harvard campus. She even was a classmate in her drama club with an Oscar winner and you learn about that person in the book as well. She goes on by meeting her husband and starting as a law clerk and it really does talk about her life and her steps in going through the process of becoming a Supreme Court Justice. A lot of us students when we see high profile figures, we don't understand the steps and the sacrifices and the hardships and the hopes that a lot of our high profile figures, especially in our government, had to go through. Put on top of that, an African American woman having bigger hopes to jump through and bigger obstacles to get to the same pinnacle of her career as a Supreme Court Justice. This book is really well laid out on the whole process of even the federal court system and what that pyramid looks like in the levels of. That is very easy for your students to understand. And then it also talks President Joel Biden's role into getting Katanji Brown Jackson appointed and the whole process of that. And you also see her husband and her two daughters looking on of her going through the most grueling job interview for the whole country to see. It is a wonderful book and it also sheds a light on Katanji and her resilience becoming a Supreme Court Justice when so many people did not want her to take on that role for our country's government In the back.

What I love about it, these H-H-HQ books are less than 50 pages long and it even has wonderful illustrations that students can see. See real photographs turn into illustrations. I highly recommend, when you're doing biographies in your classroom library sections, to have as many of these who is books of all of these wonderful contributors to our American history in past and present. A suggestion of you, educator, to make a little bingo board for your students and have it correspond with your events in the who is series and people in the who is series and once your students have finished reading the book they can color in your who is person or event in your bingo card so that way they can take this with them and read it and color it up and get to know these vital people in our history.
