Pastor With No Answers: The MIXTAPE Era
230 - Brian McLaren, Why Does Jesus Sound So Harsh?
"If you don’t forgive others, I won’t forgive you.” “It’s going to be easier for those cities than it will be for you on the day of judgement.” “Depart from me I never knew you.” “Anyone who talks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.” Jesus’ words sound so judgmental, unloving, unforgiving, and quite frankly, full of anger. And he sounds like this a lot. It’s a bit bothersome and seems conflictive with his actions of love and surrender.
Talking to Brian McLaren about this months ago was so helpful to me personally, I had to rehash with some microphones so you can benefit as well. There’s so much going on culturally with Jesus’ words and so many interpretive factors people typically are unaware of. One may not agree with the light McLaren sheds on all of this, but it's hard to argue his historical knowledge of those times which obviously is very relevant to gaining an understanding of Jesus' words.
