EP35 Breaking Free from Mom Guilt with Trisha Goodall

Christa Bevan

Today I'm chatting with Trisha Goodall a mom strategist who helps mothers to move from overwhelm to joy through customized strategies, 1:1 support, and more.  As a young mother, Trisha often felt overwhelmed and isolated. She set out to build a life that honored her version of motherhood, and she did!  All of that comes out so clearly in our conversation.  So far this has been one of my favorites as Trisha is full of knowledge, relatable stories, and great metaphors for life as a mother.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How we often learn to anticipate other's emotions and feelings as a protective mechanism.  As trauma survivors, we become adept at predicting volatility as a way to stay ahead of it.
  • How addressing her codependency, Trisha was able to stop yelling at her kids so much.
  • Circle of security parenting and the idea of being “good enough”
  • How moms often use their immense power to try and control things they don’t have influence over and what they can do differently instead.
  • The insidious nature of mom guilt and how its roots run deep in our programming from childhood.
  • How mothers in this country are treated “worse than dogs in many respects” when it comes to maternal leave.
  • The powerful question Trisha asks her clients when trying to get at the root of their behaviors in motherhood.
  • The important difference between guilt and shame and how Trisha and I both think “mom guilt” is misnamed.
  • How we can lean into our tendency as mothers to do anything for our kids, as a path back to ourselves.

This podcast is designed to connect you with resources, inspiration, and the reminder that you are not alone as you embark on your journey of radical mothering.

I’m your host Christa Bevan and I’m a certified TRE provider (which stands for tension & trauma releasing exercises), trauma-informed yoga instructor, and also a dynamic self-care coach for moms. And of course, a fellow radical mother. My approach to this work blends neuroscience-backed tools and heart-centered intuition.
