Let's have a look at what's making news around the world this week. In Mastembe, construction Land and MJMA Architecture and Design marries wood and mesh for the Canadian Sports Centre is reported by Dazeen. The timber columns and the mesh facade of this amazing building create a screen of trees for the sports center in Canada and Toronto, named the Churchill Meadows Community Center and Sports Park. The project involved conversion of a 20 hectare agricultural field into a parkland and the project has been shortlisted for the Health and Wellbeing Project category in the Design Awards 2024. The health and wellbeing project category in the design awards 2024. The sports field is a playground, skate park, outdoor trails and is organized around a very large heart of the site and it is a beacon for social gathering for healthy activity, as reported in the article. What's really important to listeners of this podcast is the structure of glulam timber that's made from black spruce was chosen for both its reduction of embodied carbon and carbon emissions and for its sculptural elements, creating an architectural feature of the structural superstructure of the building.

And on our LinkedIn feed is the ft rethink video that features mass timber construction. The video is quite a good expose into what mass timber is and the future of construction, narrated by helen barrett, who visits mass timber projects that are pushing the boundary on scale and building for a greener, better, more sustainable built environment for the future. If you'd like to check out the video, please head to our LinkedIn feed. And the Canadian architect reports a pair of Toronto office buildings are leading the way for large mass timber construction in the city and beyond. The projects T3 Sterling Road and T3 Bayside, phase 1 are featured in an expose on the Canadian Architect For the T3 Sterling Road, heinz brought together DLR Group and StructureCraft to work together, including lead designer Steve Kavanagh, who worked on the green T3 in Minneapolis. Structuralcraft's role included the encompassing acting as the timber structural engineer, coordinating timber resources and providing supply and installation. The team also included WZMH architects as the local architect of record. If you want to see some incredible photos from these projects, please head to our LinkedIn feed.

Microsoft is attempting to construct data centers made from wood as part of its company's wider offerings to slash its carbon footprint. The cloud giant is constructing two data centers in Virginia using cross-laminated timber and is trying to reduce construction. And Microsoft are trying to reduce the amount of carbon emissions from their construction of their data centers by building with a hybrid material composite system and that is using CLT and steel structure. But Microsoft engineers claim that they've made a hybrid data center which uses a combination of wood and steel and concrete to help decarbonize the centers, clt being used to supplement concrete and steel throughout the two-story structure, and Microsoft claims it's the hybrid building will reduce carbon footprint in its two facilities by 35% compared to conventional steel construction and 65% compared to typical precast concrete. Congratulations to Microsoft for taking a lead in this area. If you'd like to read more about what Microsoft are doing, including watching a video on their data center, you can head to our LinkedIn feed.

And Western Washington University says its Kaiseraiser bosari hall nears completion, with final preparations for the opening of the hall in the western's new electrical and computer engineering, energy science, computer science building, which is underway and remains open, scheduled for winter quarter in january. The building is designed to be the regional first publicly funded carbon neutral academic building on the State University campus. Solar panels cover the roof and, of course, they're using mass timber construction for the main body, including GLT and CLT, and the exterior is going to be used traditional Japanese techniques of charred wood to help increase durability and preserve the wood without using chemicals or surface treatments. If you'd like to have a look at a couple of the photos for this particular project, you can head to our LinkedIn feed. And the Chipperfield Monastery Transformation, which is amongst some of the big projects listed for the RIBA International Prize, has been shortlisted.

If you'd like to have a look at some images of this amazing project that is now being shortlisted, you can head to. You guessed it. Our linkedin feed and hopkins architects has completed the science and technology center at halibur in herfordshire. The support for the delivery of the science education project through the interconnected, sustainable design of the building will double as the school science teaching provision and also provide a way for future STEM disciplines within the historic collegiate campus. The project was awarded the design competition, which integrates CLT and GLULAM and into existing Halebury's buildings around a central courtyard. The project looks stunning. If you'd like to go and have a look at the photos, you know where to go.
