The Way It Was

Who hasn’t gotten caught up in thoughts of the way it was? Ah yes, the thrilling days of yesteryear. But when that becomes your life’s quest, you’re in for a frustration fest.

The reality is, yearning for the days of yesteryear will keep you stuck in gear.

Reality doesn’t move backwards. It’s always expanding and moving towards new vistas. But, many are still singing a song from a Broadway musical: “Stop the World – I Want to Get Off.”

Memories can be the spice of life, but never the meal. If you try and live on them, prepare for indigestion.

Life is a movie, never a snapshot. It’s always in forward motion.

Many years ago, The Grasshopper had this to say, “An anachronist is really a taxidermist attempting to stuff life into that which is dead. It’s a great parlor trick until you notice that you can’t live on the meat of a stuffed deer.”

When I was in grade school we had to read a story by Phoebe Cary. It was called “A Leak in the Dyke.” It was about a Dutch boy who put his finger in a leaking levee and saved the town from disaster. It was a heartwarming story.

But the unstated reality of the story is it was a stop gap measure, not a permanent remedy.

Permanently holding on to yesterday will leave you holding the bag.

Yes, waltz down Memory Lane as often as you choose, but if you attempt to put down roots there, prepare to lose.

All the best,

John
