Check Your Reactions At The Door

Here's a little experiment that will open you up to more options and less angst.

Whether you're heading into a meeting, a negotiation, a family gathering, or just going about your day, try this on for size:

For about an hour, do nothing but respond.

So, what do I mean by that? Simply, notice a reaction you are about to have to something that someone says or does and instead of reacting, throw in the clutch and wait for a response – a different way to speak or act in that situation.

This split second of noticing and waiting will save you from falling into a familiar trap and have new ways of responding fall into your lap.

We all have conditioned emotional triggers and people who are familiar with us know how to set them off. If you adopt the practice of noticing your normal reaction before you act it out, and then wait for a different response, you’re bypassing the stimulus/reaction loop that has become automatic over the years.

This is more than stifling yourself; it’s offering yourself the gift of free choice. That means for one hour you won’t be a robot, unconsciously reacting to any stimulus that’s presented.

It’s a way to go deeper, even with the people who are closest to you.

Choosing how you respond is a practice that creates options that reactions don't know exist.

It takes less than an hour of your time and the results are simply divine.

All the best,

John
