Living The Dream

The esoteric question often asked is: “Are you living the dream or is the dream living you?” I don’t know the answer but I have a hunch.

The premise of the ancient sages is when we’re awake, we’re dreaming and when we’re dreaming, that’s really our life. It’s a hard concept to logically grasp because our awake reality seems so real and our dreaming state seems so haphazard.

For me, it comes down to this: We attempt to figure out our life logically. Life is not logical, because reality is not logical. You can’t put reality in a neat little box, nor your life.

We walk around in a dream state most of our lives (let’s call it a trance), and ignore the realities that are always present. And when we dream, the logical filters go away and we get a glimpse of our unfiltered reality.

“That dream felt so real” is something we’ve all said. That doesn’t mean it’s prophetic, it’s just raw, unfiltered data that has no logical reasoning attached.

Logic has its place in our lives, but we treat it like it’s the only tool in the tool box. “If it doesn’t logically make sense, it can’t be real” is our spiel.

There are the hard and fast logical premises left for us by Greek philosopher Aristotle and the reflective writings of Lao Tzu in the ancient Chinese book of wisdom called the Tao Te Ching.

There are pathways to follow offered by both of these philosophies. If you get stuck on one, the other will always be there as a counterpoint. You’ll constantly be asking the question: “Am I living the dream or is the dream living me?”

The answer is both. Suspend logic once in a while and see what you can dream up. It just may offer the elixir that fills up your cup.

All the best,

John
