Tell Me What You Know

The Grasshopper had this to say on a recent visit: “Tell me what you know, then tell me what you think.”

“You know what I think.” That’s a sentence I don’t want to hear first. It’s an utterance that gives me an opinion before the facts.

Here’s a fact: Opinions are like Facebook pages, every asshole has one.

Opinions can take you down trails that lead nowhere except to peoples’ preferences and prejudices.

Facts are not partial to particular views. They put “what is” in plain view which gives you a better lay of the land and how to traverse it.

The problem I have with opinions is that many of them are not based on experience, but theory. I don’t want to theoretically know how to climb Mount Everest; I want a plan based on experience and fact. An opinionated, wanna be sherpa is just a plain hack.

Once the facts are on the table, then it’s time to offer opinions as to which way to go. The ones saturated with experience are most likely to make the most sense.

So, save your opinions for dessert. The main course comes first. And that’s a fact.

All the best,

John
