Jacob Simeus: Welcome back to the Working Smarter Café! I'm your host, Jacob Simeus, and today’s episode serves up a hot dose of compliance updates for June. We’re focusing on some key changes impacting states across the country and at the federal level as well

Jacob Simeus: First up, Colorado is making waves with its new Artificial Intelligence Act. Signed into law in May, the act regulates the use of high-risk AI systems, particularly those used for employment decisions. Companies using AI for hiring or promotions will need to be transparent with candidates, implement risk management policies, and conduct impact assessments. This is a significant development for HR professionals, and anyone involved in recruitment.

Speaking of HR, California's healthcare minimum wage has been delayed until July 1st, 2024. This will give the state more time to adjust and implement new wage schedules.

Connecticut is also making changes to its Paid Sick Leave Law. Key updates include expanding coverage to smaller employers, eliminating notice requirements for employees, and changing the accrual rate for sick time. These changes will affect businesses across various industries in Connecticut.

Maryland and Minnesota are joining the pay transparency movement, requiring employers to disclose wage ranges and benefits in job postings.  This step reflects a desire from these two states to help promote fairness and equity in the hiring process.

And finally, on the federal front, the Department of Labor has finalized new overtime rules that will significantly impact many businesses. Starting July 1st, the standard salary level for overtime eligibility will increase, potentially impacting millions of employees.
