The conversation explores the concept of balance and how it can lead to the pursuit of perfection. It highlights the struggle women face in trying to be who God says they are while also conforming to societal expectations. The importance of seeking first the kingdom of God and trusting that all other things will be added is emphasized. Taking action in obedience to God's general call is discussed, and the idea that calling is character-driven is introduced. The conversation concludes by addressing the search for purpose in challenging times. In this conversation, Michelle Myers discusses the importance of seeking God's will and finding identity in His calling. She emphasizes the need to focus on character traits rather than external achievements. Michelle encourages listeners to look to Jesus as an example and to prioritize time with God. She also highlights the book of Ecclesiastes as a source of wisdom and reminds us that true contentment comes from fearing God and keeping His commands. Michelle's ministry, She Works His Way, offers practical guidance and accountability for women seeking to align their lives with God's purposes.

Oh, yeah I can. Yeah, you're good. Are you okay? I started, but we can edit obviously. but you can hear us, okay? T. I hear you great, but my screen went black and then it came back. Yeah, okay, you're good. All right, here we go. We have seen firsthand the deep desire women have for a balanced life. We felt it ourselves, but we're pushing back on that approach because although balance can be good for us, it isn't God's best for us. Believe us, between the two of us, we've tried everything. And if you think about it, what does the word balance imply anyway? Usually some form of perfection. And we all know how pursuing perfection tends to go. So we're here to take the modern day mantra that the solution is a balanced life and test it against what God's word says. Women are simultaneously striving to be who God says they are and who the world says they should be. That's not balance, that's bondage. Taken from the book, She Works His Way, and we have one of the incredible authors of that on the podcast with us, Michelle Myers, who you'll meet in a second. But first, Tyler against Tyler's deep desire because he does not enjoy laughing. We're going to come back and do some Christian jokes. And Michelle has one too. But let's save you for the end, Michelle, because it's probably better than ours. Tyler, stop shaking your head, bro. You know that's true. Our audience knows that's true. I'm the humorous one of the two of us, clearly, though I hear the opposite all the time. Someone came up to us, Michelle, at a conference and literally said, Garrett, you're not funny. And Tyler is funny. And she was so dry. We're like, are you being rude or is like, was that, what are you doing? It was incredible. But what you got T she did me. I honestly think she meant it. Yeah. That's fine. I'll keep going. you know what so first of all coming in just so hot to start off with this everybody I found out about 96 seconds ago that we were throwing jokes down today And so here we are in the pod in the flesh ready to do it. And I mean, I don't have one in the queue I don't have one in the queue. So, you know, I know you do because you plan this you know, you got to roll with it. Well, listen, I have a question for you, Tyler. Oh, good idea. That is a good idea. How selfless of you. You're so holy. Yeah, right. Don't praise him. All right. So listen, Tyler, what do they call pastors in Germany? You can get this one. German Shepherds. Michelle side. That's fantastic. Michelle literally side. That's incredible. That's awesome. All right, Michelle, what do you got? What's your debt? I'm very disappointed I didn't get that. I'm not gonna lie. Okay. I'm even a dog person. So, okay, all right. What do you call Batman when he skips church? Sadly, I know but I'll let you say it. Christian Bale! I like it. I like it. That's good. Me too. See, again, how many times have I told you this, Garrett? Don't say anything. It's okay if you know. It's okay. Just pretend like you don't. Just pretend like nobody cares that you know the answer because you read it somewhere before. Let Michelle have the punchline. Oh my. am Reformed Baptist. So, Michelle Myers, we are so glad you're here. Thank you for actually coming prepared with the joke, even though you also didn't know. You still showed up on the biggest stage, unlike my brother here. We are so excited to have you, Michelle. Introduce yourself. Well, just so you know, I will laugh just as hard at that one every single time it is told. Like that's just the one it gets me. It gets me. It's a pun. There's so many things with it. Yes. Bale has heard that before? Because he should. I don't think he's a believer based on, you know, whatever the stuff he does. Yeah, I hope so, too. I hope he's heard it as well. It'd be amazing. Oh my goodness, okay, I don't know how to transition from here. My name is Michelle. Yes, okay, I'm so excited. My family and I live in Asheville, North Carolina. My husband and I are both on staff at Biltmore Church. I am the co -founder of the ministry called She Works His Way. We have a podcast, a Patreon, a book, commentaries, resources. We've been around for a while. I love, it is such an honor to be able to do ministry alongside my best friend. And so I always have, when summer's not here, I'm always like, I'll probably a million times. Summer puts it this way because she's appropriately named Summer because things that I can say in four pages she can say in a sentence and so she summarizes everything. So see I told you I love a pun. Yes, yes thank you. Yes. are welcome here, sister. No, that's amazing. I love that. And Lindsey Sears, I know you're freaking out right now because we got Michelle and you love she works his way. So ladies, especially. Yes, that's right. Ladies, check this out. This is an incredible community for sure. And men, hey, we're going to talk to you, too, today. Don't don't be offended. because we're saying women. But listen, I think one of the things, and as I said, I read the book and I know it's specifically to women, but at the very beginning, I think it just hits hard. As I read in the cold open, women and anyone really, anyone is simultaneously striving to be who God says they are and who the world says they should be. That's not balance. That's bondage. And I love that. Unpack that for us, Michelle, because it's so true. What does that mean? You know, it's funny, I think you read the part where balance always ends up resulting in us feeling some form of pressure for perfection because perfection and this whole idea of getting it all right and putting that all on your shoulders, that's never gonna come without pressure. The problem is that when we do that, we end up trying to do the job that God has called us to do and then also trying to balance the expectations of other people, our own and they are probably not going to align. There's gonna be a tension there at some point and you have to choose. And so it's what we always come back to Matthew 6 33 here where we talk about seeking first the kingdom and his righteousness and then all these things will be added unto you. And so it's not that there can't be all the things that you're juggling. It's just that that's not your priority. In fact it's funny because that word priority has been around for a really long time. time, but in the last couple of decades we've invented the word priorities. We've made it plural in which that was not a thing of the past. Priority meant one. You had one. You had one focus. You had one thing. You did not have multiple priorities. And so as we've attempted to have these multiple priorities and live in a way that is balanced but not surrendered, which is how God calls us to live, we have put pressure on ourselves that we were just never meant to bear. Well, that's all we needed. Just listen to that a couple times and we're good to go. No, I love that. I think so. So let me ask a question on that, Michelle, because I think I absolutely agree with that 100 % true. One of the struggles, I think I was talking to someone in our community actually yesterday, and it is this, so seek first the kingdom of heaven, right? 100%. Matthew 6 says that. So yeah, we have to do that. It's prescribed for us in scripture. One of the struggles I think that I've heard from believers that I know I've personally had as well is it ends up a lot of times that we end up not taking action at all because we're sitting there, Lord, give me wisdom, give me clarity. What do you want me to do? And we're sitting there waiting for him to tell us, right? And he's not going to, he's going to, he's already told us what he's going to tell us verbally in scripture. And so we've got to look at that and say, well, what is it that I'm being called to? And. Tyler, you say you're going to reference summer says it like this. Tyler gave a great example of we've got this beautiful backyard, but there's a fence around it. Right. And the fence is what scripture has specifically prescribed for us, me as a husband and dad, for example. But inside of that, just go do something. That's the freedom that we have. It doesn't say that I've got to go build this type of business or do that kind of thing. Right. So how do we properly seek first the kingdom of God? Mm -hmm. know that all those things will be added because we can't just sit there and do nothing. What is that in your opinion functionally look like for someone in their day -to-day life? Yeah, that's a great question. And so I think we have to think about what is God's overall mission? And God's overall mission that he's invited us into is to, as we go to make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them all that he has taught us, knowing that as we do that, that we're not alone, that he is with us. And so that's the general call to all believers. And so I think I say this all the time, but people, one of the best well -meaning questions that we get all the time is how do I know what God's will for my life is? Because people don't want to miss it. the reality of it is he's already given us a step and I think that specific and individual calls happen as we are active in his general call to all believers And so I think that's the problem We want the unicorn specific assignment without having to jump into the obedient step that he's already given us to do and I do think that those specific assignments come But I think that they come as we are involved in his general assignment first And so that's what I think it means to see his kingdom and his righteousness and then trust that all that other stuff what the other ones are he will give those appropriate steps at the right time but he's already given us the first obedient step and it would be really selfish of us to ask for a next obedient step when we haven't been obedient to the one that he clearly has given us. Yeah. that's really good. That is ministering to me directly right there, and I know so many others, but that's great. I know G just mentioned that what I would firsthand reference about just the freedom that you have to go forth and within that framework of obedience, just go play and enjoy. But it starts with action, right? Like, so actually I was speaking to a good brother of mine yesterday about this exact topic, and he used the words, man, God bless his movement. God blesses action. Like obedience so much of the time and we think about our kids or anybody, a lot of times it can apply passivity or it can imply some degree of submission, which it certainly does, but you fail to see the action that accompanies obedience. You fail to see what calling actually represents. Like it is a going, it is a doing. It's not idle. There is nothing in... scripture that commands the spreading of the gospel and the going forth as staying in one place or sitting on our hands. Every verb is active in going forth, thinking about when Peter steps out of the boat out of faith to walk on the water, it's action. He takes an action to come out there when the crippled hand, he has to reach his hand out for Jesus to heal it. As people are coming, they're crossing the Red Sea, they have to take the step into the water before the seas parted. Like you have to take action in order to, for that movement to be blessed, right? Like I think you're talking about it perfectly with this overarching level of obedience, which starts with the first priority, that prioritization of obedience to Him being, and then the specific unicorns that you talked about, which I think that's so great. I've been chasing unicorns forever. That should write an article. That'd be a great article. But you can't experience that until you're out into the field, until you're actually walking the walk of what it looks like to obey Him first. That's so good. And I think, yeah. important. We should create a board game called Chasing Unicorns. And it's all, the only way you win is when you submit your will to the Lord. I think that would sell millions. Right, that's right. It's genius. There's, there's no rules except the Bible. So each, each board game comes with the Bible. That's brilliant. Thank you, Michelle. You guys heard it here first. Yeah, let's go. it. Yes. Yes. Okay. I'm in. No, I mean, I just think that sometimes when you think about action, I think we attribute action to something big. and we attribute bigness to what we contribute, not understanding that God is the one who does big things. Everything that God orchestrates is big because it is God that is directing it. It doesn't have anything to do with the size of our task. And so you use the word calling, and I think it's really important to think about that because calling is character driven. It's about who you are when you're doing something. It's not as much about the task. And so if we always center ourselves, our identity and who we are and we take that where we go. I mean we started with the Great Commission and a lot of times I know when I heard this verse shared when I was a kid it was always in the context of a mission trip. Whether somebody was a missionary and they were going overseas for forever or if they were just going overseas for a short period of time they were like oh yes you know you go and then now listen I went to seminary and I need to be clear I am NOT a Greek scholar I cried my way through Greek but When you take Greek, what you have to do to just force yourself to come back to another class is hang on to the one thing that you've learned that's actually made a difference. And so my moment was in the Great Commission when I learned that the passive verb in that, and so we translate it go, but closer translation would be as you go. And so like the command was not to go, the assumption is that, hey, you're alive and your heart is beating, so you're going. The command there is actually to make disciples. And so that broadens how we see the Great Commission to where we recognize, hey, as you go to the mailbox, to your kid's school, to your job, to the soccer field, to the wherever, that's your mission field that God has given you to make disciples. And so calling is about who He has made you to be all the places where He has put you. And that's the clearest example of what God's will for your life is, not where He'll take you next. But God's will, his clearest will for your life is where he has you now. Because I am a wholehearted believer that most of God's assignments that he gives that are specific come in people form, not task form. Hmm. It's really good. I love that. I love the idea. Calling is, is character driven, right? It's, it's such a great, I've never heard it put that way, but it's such a helpful description. I was talking to someone yesterday and that was their concern. It's like, I don't know what I'm called to. I don't know what I'm called to. And my encouragement, my response was, I think we misused the word calling. We think the Lord has given us clear instructions what we're called to. He wrote those down. Everything else is. This is what we believe we should do, right? We can't give them the same weight. I don't know if I'm supposed to be doing this podcast. I do know that I'm supposed to wash my wife with the word, right? Tyler definitely doesn't think I should be doing this podcast. He keeps trying to get me to quit. No, I'm just kidding. But I love that concept, right? Calling is about, is character driven. Because in in our industry right in the real estate space and you've got a lot of people right now that are hurting that are struggling that are concerned Whatever just in general right the economy is bad all the things It is this reality people are I think more than ever asking that question. What's my purpose? What's my purpose? And I think if we're honest and if I'm honest, right? You This show for me, Michelle, is basically my chance just to confess all my bad, my bad sin and my habits, right? If you listen, yep, so it's just me being terrible. Yeah, but I love that idea because most of the time I think when I'm sitting there like, oh Lord, just show me what you want me to do. It's honestly, honestly, deep down, I think it's because I'm afraid to fail. And I think, well, if I do the wrong thing, the Lord's gonna make me screw up or something's gonna happen and it's gonna be jacked up. But if I just sit here long enough and he just tells me, then what I'm gonna do is gonna be amazing. And it's going to be awesome. It's going to provide all of these things. And so I'm sitting there waiting and afraid because the truth is it's not moving out of faith, right? I'm stuck because of fear and I don't look at it and say, what's my calling? Well, my calling is these character traits. Therefore I'm going to seek, uh, I was sharing on the podcast, uh, I don't know whenever, but one, one day I was sitting in church in our Academy time, which is like Sunday school. And, uh, one of our elders is teaching. And he's this incredible, godly man. He's in his sixties, got these incredible, godly kids. And I remember thinking, Michelle, for a minute, I thought, well, that's cool that he's an elder, but I'm made for something bigger. And pretty quickly, right after that, I thought to myself in the Lord's kindness, I thought, why is it that all I ever desire is the office of CEO and never the office of elder, right? Just the traits of an elder, just the desire to desire those godly things. It's because I'm missing exactly what you said. It's about the character piece of that. That's what we're called into. So I love, I love that. I love that heart. You know, you, you, and I want you to pack some more as you go into this. Again, we're striving to be who God says we are and who the world says we should be. That's not balance. That's bondage. Where do we go, Michelle? When of course scripture, right? But where do we go to really understand who is the Lord calling me to be? If someone says, all right, I love it. It's character driven. What should I do? Practically, what should I do? Read the gospels. and look at the example of Jesus because that is our example of what it looks like to live on mission in the midst of a broken world. The world was not perfect when Jesus walked on the earth. The world was already broken. And so he has given us an example of what it looks like. And it is very counter -cultural. I mean, just think about, you know, at the time, I don't know when this will air, but at the time we're in the middle of Holy Week right now. Think about how fickle, human opinion is that the same people that shouted Hosanna and put palm branches down for Jesus were the same people that just a couple of days later were shouting crucify him and give us Barabbas. You know that is how fleeting human opinion, approval, however you want to word it, is. And so Jesus had a very clear mission. He constantly served among the crowds, but if you think about how Jesus handled the crowds, he often singled out individuals and he would narrow in on a person. And then the other thing that it tells us that he did is that he would withdraw from the crowd. He would withdraw and he would withdraw to be with the Lord. And so it wasn't just withdraw for the sake of like, that's not just saying Jesus was an introvert. He was, he was withdrawing so that he could be with the Lord so that he had something overflowing from him to give back when he went back into the broken world. And if Jesus needed to do that, then how much more do we need to do that? Amen. All the introverts just rejoiced when you said they did it quietly, right? So no one could hear them, but they still did it. Uh, no, I think that's absolutely right. I mean, again, I think just the idea she works his way, right? Is just leads in my opinion. And as, as a man, right? I'm not going to say, what does it look like for me as a woman? This is not that kind of show, but, uh, but to just ask the question, what does it mean to work his way? Mm -hmm. WWJD used to be the thing, right? And then it became a joke and whatever, but it really is like, what would Jesus do in these moments? What does it mean to work his way? I'm constantly amazed when I read the gospels that Jesus is healing all these people. And then there's a huge line out the door, right? I'm obviously paraphrased, but a huge line out the door. And he's like, yeah, but we got to go somewhere else. Right? He had, he had understanding. He understood exactly what he was supposed to do and where he was supposed to go. And then he retreated. And yet exactly what you said early on. Priority, we added priorities. And one of the challenges that I've run into a lot, Michelle, and I've shared with our audiences, the stress, the anxiety of just doing all the things. And I, and I came face to face with Psalm 131 where King David says, among many things, but he says, I do not desire. things too great or too marvelous for me, but I've calmed and quiet in my soul. And I thought, well, all of these things I'm trying to do, I'm just desiring something that I'm not created for. Right. I'm not seeking first the kingdom. I'm seeking first my kingdom. And therefore there's no calm or quiet in my soul because I want all of these things. I'm not supposed to desire or have. If my calling is character based, what's going on with my character is the right question. Right. So anyways, I just love the concept. I love the thoughts of what you're doing. If there's women that are listening to this, which is probably mostly women, because you know, Tyler's handsome. That's awkward. I don't know why I said that. Sorry, T. You know, that's true. everyone could though, because the face that you made when he said that was great. Was great. don't here's my problem Michelle Tyler always says the most dangerous thing to this ministry is me and that's probably true because I just say exactly what I think That's fantastic, that's amazing anyways, I don't know. Oh, so if all of these women that are listening right now Why should they look into what you guys are doing? What is it that you are offering that would be of service to these women that are working in a job every day? Yeah, you know for years our ministry met on zoom and so it was so fun to watch and see the faces of the women that we were talking to most of the time our meetings would be in the middle of their workday so we tried to time it to where we could hit an early lunch an on -time lunch and a late lunch no matter what time zone people were coming from and when people would come in nobody can see me but if you could you would know that my shoulders are like up to my ears and that is just showing like the I'm literally carrying it in my body. And like, as we would talk, we would literally watch what we called the shoulder drop. Mm, it's awesome. just watch the weight fall off of people when they heard and were reminded of truth. We were not inventing anything new. We were not saying anything new. If anything, we were saying the same thing in a different way every single week. But it was the reminder that we needed at the soul level. And it was different than everything else that we were hearing. Because everything else we were hearing was, do better, be faster, be bigger, be more important. this be that and then literally it was like no no just be who God asked you to be be who God called you to be Trust God to do his job. Don't try to do God's job You're really bad at God's job actually and so if you'll just trust God to be himself And you'll step into what he's called you you you can actually trust him far more than you can trust yourself and so We would just dig into these things and sometimes it would be more You know scripture heavy of just that that truth that we need to saturate our souls and sometimes it would be really really practical if you She's like, okay, I hear you, that's right. We shouldn't gossip. As believers, we shouldn't gossip, but what do I do when it's happening all around me in the workplace? Like, it gets a little bit messier when we start to lean toward application. And so, then we talk about it, we talk about what it actually looks like to know about using your words and using your time as a believer when it comes to gossip and understanding the difference there. And so, we would just have these really, really in -depth conversations that would always never stem from Summer and I's ideas. They stem from what God has already said because that's what we really need to know everything We really need to know God has clearly said in his word and so we use that as our foundation and then we talk practically About what it looks like and we hold each other accountable and we call each other up We don't call each other out we call each other up to the standard that God has called us to because None of the things that we are facing are new None of them are new. And so I would, if you were looking for... If you're struggling with this, like if you are right now, if you were just like, man, I am on the hamster wheel of success and I am on there and I'm getting on there every day with fresh energy and like I am in that wheel and I am running and like some days I can run for hours on end and then other days I climb back into the wheel and I'm like, this is the dumbest thing that I've ever seen, but I don't know anything else to do. And then you add in the pressure from the world and then all of a sudden it feels like your little hamster wheel is on a tight rope and you're just literally hanging. on and trying to keep all the wheels spinning because you know that if you stop everything is going to drop and fall off. There's a really really great book of the Bible that I think is super super encouraging to people that are exhausted from the world's way and I know that I just said the word encouraging but I'm also going to say the book of Ecclesiastes. Okay hear me out. Hear me out. Because you can read the book of Ecclesiastes like the bummer book of the Bible. Like if you want to if you want to that tone to it you can almost make it sound like Eeyore to where you can you know everything is meaningless you know you can do that but yeah oh my gosh but If you flip it differently, because essentially what we're getting is we're getting Solomon at the end of his life who was the wealthiest man to ever live, the most successful man to ever live, the most powerful man to ever live. Dreamers, listen to me, everything that he dreamed up, he got. He didn't miss any of it, he got it all. And he got to the end of his life and recognized that it was all meaningless. He goes through kind of the experiment of all of these different things that he tried to get to satisfy him. And again, remember. Everything that he thought that he would that he needed he got and this is why we have to take his word for it Because you and I are never gonna be resource like Solomon to actually get a hundred percent of every single one of our dreams And so we're gonna be able to blame our dissatisfaction on like that five to ten percent that we didn't get and we're gonna think man If I had just gotten that much more that would have been it and so think about this right now You can choose the time frame that you want to but whether you want to go back to last year five years ten years years, 20 years, think about what you thought you needed to be content. I bet you, you probably have most of it, but I bet you're still not content and you've made a new list. And that is what Solomon did. for his entire life, that hamster wheel. You guys can't see my hamster wheel, but it is going. And so that he just hopped on that hamster wheel and he gets to the end and he says, fear God, keep his commands. And that's it. That's the advice that we have from the guy who got everything. By the way, wisdom literature bookends with Job and Solomon. Solomon who got it all, Job who lost it all. And both of them came to the same conclusion. Just God. That's it.-mm. That's good. It's rare that I have nothing to say, but I have nothing to say. Yes, yes. Anytime. That's amazing. T, man, because I'm so humble, why don't you take us out, my brother? Let's do that Eeyore voice. What do you think about that? convenient. Yeah. No, I'm just, I mean, I do want to say I'm so I've been so encouraged by this time and I wish we had more time to keep unpacking things like this. But there there's so much that resonated with me throughout it all, but especially the final truth that you shared with that there is never when we tell ourselves we've all had this inner conversation, this inner dialogue that says when we get here. when I get the promotion, when I have, when I make this amount of money, when I finally buy that house, when we finally have children, when we find all, there's always something and that is completely fleeting. It's the target that's always moving constantly. And I love the affirmation of Solomon as you've shared that like it, it never stops. It doesn't matter, but just God. But if you are listening and you're having that inner dialogue, like I know, I mean, I won't make, I think Michelle's got it nailed. But I know Garrett and I are having that conversation constantly about, you know, when I get to this, because it's well-placed. I mean, we have intentions of when I have this, you know, stability financially in our life, then I'll be able to invest more into my kids and be able to invest more into our family and to go out on mission when I have these things. It's such a lie. It's such a distraction away from what we are called into. primarily, what is the singular priority of obedience that the Bible commands us into. If we start getting past that before we can fully and accurately say, yes, I am in obedience to the Lord, then it's all a lie. It's all selfish. It's all selfish ambition that we're pursuing in that point. And if you're listening, you're having that conversation, I hope you're encouraged by everything that Michelle has shared here. I hope that you're encouraged a little bit by the little nuggets that G and I shared today. and that you continue to go forth and prioritize the first thing that we've spoken to today, and that is obedience to the Lord, finding, seeking Him, taking joy in Him. Ask, seek, knock, and He is right there. So to all you faithful agents, thanks so much for listening. To Michelle, thank you so much for being here. Before I take us out, where can everybody come and follow you, hear more of this truth? Where do they need to go? we have a podcast that She Works His Way, so you can search She Works His Way wherever you listen to podcasts. We're pretty active on Instagram, so you can find the ministry platform on Instagram as well. I'm Michelle L. Myers. And then we've got a handful of books. The two that we've talked to today about are on Amazon. So the first one's called She Works His Way, but I also wrote a verse -by -verse commentary on the book of Ecclesiastes. And so if that's a message that you're like, man, I need to dig into that. Solomon said a lot. than I could cover today and transparently he said it better and so I would love to walk through that with you. It's conversational commentary on Ecclesiastes wisdom to live for heaven while on earth. Hmm, that's good stuff. We have a book club. I think that's gonna be the next book. Yeah, that's a great I love that. I don't know why I said that Tyler still live, but hey book club work This is what we're doing next. All right, you heard it here first Tyler didn't even know we had a book club faithful agents But you're beautiful and that's all the matters we love you faithful agents we will see you next week
