Speaker 1:

Welcome back to another episode of the Sober Vibes podcast. I am your host, courtney Anderson, and you are listening to episode 168. And here is a new little pop-up series I will be doing for season five, called Sober Tip Tuesday. I wanted to do this because I want you to be able to come back and use the podcast to be like okay, I just need a quick little tip, right? We all take in information all differently. Sometimes you need to hear it a couple times over and over again, and I wanted to make this a little bit shorter for you and easy to listen to, where you can grasp in the information, you get your fix right and you're like all right, cool. I need to remember this Because oftentimes we hear things and then it's just you forget about it and then, instead of listening to my longer episodes, you can just come back to these and soak up this bite-sized little series. And I started to do this when I was on break between seasons and an email series, which I will still continue to do. But that way I liked doing it in all honesty, so that's why I wanted to bring it on the podcast and do it in this talking format for you. Anyways, I hope you're having an awesome Tuesday and here is the tip for this Tuesday okay, this is your sober tip Allow yourself to laugh.

Speaker 1:

I know it's so easy to allow yourself to laugh. You must. When it comes in the world of sobriety and recovery and in life okay, just in life general you need to make yourself laugh. But it's very easy to get caught up in your head and get very serious of what has happened to you right, because it has been serious and get stuck in that loop and get stuck into energies of in life, of other people's energies that you meet in this loop, community Cause, listen, there's doom and gloom, people all around, and especially to in meetings, whether it's virtual or not. It's very easy for people to take over meetings, okay, and then you're leaving those meetings being like it's like it and you're in.

Speaker 1:

If you're an empath or a sensitive person, you pick up on that, and then it's like and if you're an empath or a sensitive person, you pick up on that, and then it's like shit, how the fuck do I shake this right Like that was a lot that person shared, you know, or you have people in your life who are doom and gloom and it's just a lot and then you get, you can take on that and become doom and gloom yourself and I don't want that for you and I don't want you to think that you cannot laugh in this road of life when it comes to either yourself or a situation where it's just sometimes the laughter helps and a lot in my own sobriety and in my own recovery again, because for me it was more of like a trauma response. If you've listened to past episodes with me and my sister, I mean we're sick and twisted but we've always laughed and I think that and have had a sense of humor about ourselves. You know, even the other day there was something that I thought about in my active addiction that I laughed about myself because I was like Jesus Christ, good God, courtney. So I want to give you that permission today. If you're needing this and you need that, pick me up of just like. You're right, I can fucking laugh. And I will tell you this when you incorporate humor and allowing yourself to laugh and live in a lighter state and allowing yourself to laugh and live in a lighter state, it gets easier and it gets easier just to then be able to compartmentalize and be like okay, yes, that was me in a past life, but this isn't me today. I'm not continuing to live like that right, like especially nowadays. It's like we need a little bit more lightheartedness in such a serious world. It's not saying that you are going to start living life where it's like all you see is like rainbows and fucking unicorns and scrunchies. That's not what I'm saying. I'm here with reality of like, laugh at yourself. It helps in the process of healing. I say it in my book too.

Speaker 1:

It's like start with comedy specials. Put on, drop the true crime, drop the news, okay, and let's put on some Golden Girls. Take it back to some shows in the 80s and early 90s. The show was funny, okay. Even going back to the 70s, there was funny television, and because today, with all of the information that we're constantly getting, it's all negative, feeling far between, is like positive stories, but you just really need to take it back and get with some funniness. So put on the golden girls. I don't know designing women. I'm trying to think of some shows that were like funny and comical. Some Laverne and Shirley, okay. Or some comedy specials or present day you know a comedic show and stop taking in the negativity. I stopped watching the news back in two and this is like for another tip on another day, but like I stopped with the news back in 2016. It's not saying that I don't ever not watch the news, I just really limit it and it was one of the best. And you can tell when people have that news cycle on loop and it's definitely a certain generation that watches the news on loop and it's too much. It's too much because then you're hit with that negativity and whatnot.

Speaker 1:

So, in this space of you, in your alcohol-free life, in your sobriety, in your recovery, in your road to healing, laugh. Do what you need to do. Even if there is books that are funny to you, read those books. And if you need to read them more than once, read them more than once. Okay, again, this is something because I practice what I preach. This is something that I suggest you do more of and allow yourself that.

Speaker 1:

Maybe even one night, go to a comedy house or comedy store and go see somebody who's funny and sit there and enjoy yourself and bring in some lightheartedness to your road of recovery. Okay, where there's laughter, there's going to be a lot more healing within yourself. I promise you that. Let me know if this Sober Tip Tuesday episode helped you today.
