Teen Horror Cast

E14 Part 2: Barbarian (2022)

The Teen Horror Cast Team Season 4 Episode 14

Part 2 of our 2 part review

HELLO and WELCOME to episode FOURTEEN of the Teen Horror Podcast, where we watch and discuss horror movies from a teen’s perspective. In this episode we cover the 2022 film Barbarian starring Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, and Bill Skarsgård.

This movie features themes of sexual assault and rape, so if that’s not something you’re comfortable with, probably best to stop listening now, and we’ll see you in the next episode!

Ethan:

Welcome back, folks.

Sage:

crazy jump here in the movie

Zach:

Yeah.

Ethan:

This is part two of our two-part episode on Barbarian. If you haven't listened to part one, we'd encourage you to do that first. Now we pick up where we left off with the entrance of a new character in the film, AJ. Great, yes, yeah.

Sage:

AJ singing

Zach:

Insane jump to AJ singing in the car.

Ethan:

This is very much like a Pulp Fiction-style story interleaving, but...

Sage:

in the sun

Zach:

It was a good transition, actually. I liked the transition. I have not.

Ethan:

Zach, have you seen Pulp Fiction? Okay, so, well, also not a teen film.

Zach:

I need to cut that part out for sure.

Ethan:

Let me absolutely say, please, teens at home, get your permission first.

Zach:

Please. Please. Mm-hmm.

Ethan:

I love Tarantino film, and I love Pulp Fiction, but it's definitely a rough ride. But it has that same structure. A cutting, interleaving story that you realize later on how they hook up.

Zach:

We set the themes for AJ.

Ethan:

40-something, 50-something actor.

Zach:

He's riding along in his car, singing along to some song on the radio. Yeah, probably 40.

Ethan:

Oh, yeah, I think he's...

Zach:

I didn't even look more like 30. 30. 50. That's crazy. Looks pretty good for 50.

Ethan:

I think Justin Long? I think he's got to be around. I guess so.

Zach:

Damn. Anyway, so he's running along in his red convertible with the top down, wants to be singing, having the time of his life, and he gets a phone call from a producer of a show that he's been singing. He's either writing, directing, starring in. I'm not exactly sure. He doesn't really. Involved with pretty heavily. And they inform him that he's more than likely going to be cut out completely. He has a rape allegation against him by one of his co-stars. It's just like his whole life shatters for a second. And then, I mean, we just see that whole thing crumbling down. He parks his car. There's no more music. And yeah, it was an effective scene.

Sage:

..

Zach:

The creepy Frank home. One part, one thing I loved is that the lawyer, is the call with the lawyer that he had, AJ, when he gets in the rental car, and the lawyer's like, you cannot go to Detroit. Like, it'll look like you're fleeing. Like, they paid attention to some details. Because a lot of times, the movie just wouldn't mention that. I don't know. That scene worked really well for me for some reason. I did like the scene of him in the rental car. The dialogue was really good.

Sage:

it's kind of funny

Zach:

No.

Sage:

it feels right because he mentions he's like hold on like I'm gonna put you on speaker I'm getting a rental and then a few minutes later he's like wait sorry did you say rental what do you mean rental he's like I'm in Detroit and he's always like you can't be in Detroit

Zach:

I love how annoyed he sounds.

Sage:

like

Zach:

The lawyer, he's, like, yeah.

Sage:

he's so funny it's

Zach:

And I love, I don't know,

Sage:

great

Zach:

I don't know why I love the line at the end, where AJ's like, I'm here to do some liquidating. And it's like,

Sage:

it's

Zach:

he says it so aggressively. It's so funny. I love the actor.

Sage:

hilarious I I honestly I love his character he's really funny okay I don't love his character okay I take it I take it

Zach:

I love how he acts. The actor is great.

Sage:

yeah his actor is funny

Zach:

He...

Sage:

like all of the

Zach:

He's a great actor.

Sage:

Apple um ads right for the their new computer and like whenever it came out the stone ages right and I remember you you like made me watch some of them it's like a relic of the past uh he doesn't care he doesn't care at all oh god where they're like and then it and right right that's really funny liquidating so oh boy yeah that's actually a really good point because the imager does play kind of a pivotal role but he does take a flashlight and a knife down down there yeah and he does manage to take the smallest knife i've ever seen but i mean he's a little clumsy with he drops the knife the flashlight and the gun yeah on purpose oh my god what's happening in my house,, you
