Andi

Yeah, I guess I was expecting more blood. I'm glad that the head is already off of the animal

Tanner

guess It's awfully... Dark. like, well, just build a better bridge. Yeah, yeah.

Andi

We basically could have called this episode squid games.

Sups

games. Yes.

Andi

he's already come to terms with his mortality a little bit more than like a 20 something year old. Hello and welcome to this episode of I Should Have Known, the trivia game show that can't be trusted. Each week, one of our Quizmasters will present you with four facts about a topic, but one of those facts is a lie. And we are celebrating Halloween by doing Stranger Than Fiction this month. So all of our episodes this month have elements of comparing real world to fiction and all of the weirdness of both. And today we have Quite an unusual episode our quiz master is Supes,

Sups

Hello!

Andi

and Supes is doing an episode on dangerous games, but the structure is a little bit unusual. So instead of it being. One lie, it's going to be three lies. Supes made it really difficult for himself this week. So, he's going to present you with four dangerous games, and he's going to present them all as if they're real. But actually, only one of them is from real life. The other three are from... Fiction. So join me, Andy and our other host Tanner and figuring out which one is stranger than fiction.

Sups

So here you have to twist your brain because here there are three fake ones and one true.

Tanner

I

Sups

didn't invent any of the games, but I've taken inspiration from fiction. and then I've like slightly adjusted it, right?

Andi

In these kinds of episodes We kind of have a bonus minigame of guessing what fictional source these come from. It's kind of an extra. So We're kind of diving into some of the darker parts of fiction and human imagination, I suppose. And then also always knowing that one of these is real.

Sups

Yes. So what I can say outright is that there is blood and death involved. All right. So there's something in all of the,

Tanner

Yeah.

Sups

that's true. Yes. before we get going let's do our PQQ pub quiz question of the week. This, I guess, is the least creepy thing that you're going to hear from me in the next Okay, we're talking about sports, right? So here's like a sporty question In the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024, how many sports disciplines will be there? like actual number of sports, Because cycling, for example, has like many different types of cycling. Swimming has like types of swimming.

Andi

did you know, trivia once we talked about this and how disciplines and actual individual sports are different. there were 10 at the original Olympics. So now I'm going to guess there's... 19.

Tanner

I say

Sups

30. The answer is 32.

Tanner

Oh, okay.

Andi

Ooh. 32. Oh,

Sups

and usually the word 28

Andi

They added four more.

Sups

They added surfing. Skateboarding, climbing, and breakdance.

Andi

Oh, wow. But, none of those are

Tanner

That's not

Sups

not. none of them. None of them are creepy. That's why I said this is like the least creepy question

Tanner

Yeah.

Sups

now on to the main

Andi

course. Onto the horror Olympics.

Sups

Okay, cool. Sport number one. is Buzkashi.

Tanner

the name of

Sups

Buzkashi is the national sport of Afghanistan. So in this game This combines elements of rugby and equestrian.

Tanner

Okay.

Sups

Players are called chapandas. Okay. And they're carrying a headless calf or a goat and they take it on their horse. So usually what they do, they dip the headless calf or the goat carcass and like water to increase

Andi

To make it heavier.

Tanner

Oh God.

Sups

Right. And they have to, score some points And these chapandas, like the players, they don't actually own the horses. The horses are actually owned by the rich, the landowners, like the rich people in the tribe.

Andi

So here's the hunger game element. Yeah. These are

Tanner

just the jockeys, the

Andi

horses, the real stars. Oh yeah. You

Sups

Yes.

Andi

How dangerous is it though? Like, To the humans?

Sups

the humans. can get injured, right?

Andi

yeah, I imagine, punching each other. The only rule is, like, keep the goat

Sups

Yeah. and

Andi

cross the line.

Sups

that's why, you know, a good Chapandas is. In his forties. So he's training for of his life to actually have this

Andi

all, and you know, he already lived a pretty solid like, amount of time. So like, it's, it's fine. Yeah. He's like,

Tanner

He's already come to terms with his mortality. He's like a 26 a life, to...

Andi

he's, he's already come to terms with his mortality a little bit more than like a 20 something year old. So he's had a, he's had time to live a life, I guess. yeah, yeah.

Sups

20 something year old.

Tanner

So do you think that people really play this in the real world? Really riding around on horses and carrying a dead, headless animal.

Andi

Oh man. This sounds brutal. I guess my thing is like, well, what fiction is this from then?

Tanner

guess my thing is, like, what fiction

Andi

like...

Tanner

Right.

Andi

Other than like the

Tanner

don't know, I was

Andi

What else

Tanner

it Sounds very real, like, gruesome.

Andi

yeah Yeah, I guess I was expecting more blood. I'm glad that the head is already off of the animal the creepy element there is that, like, they're using a carcass, but like, historically, like,, they couldn't make a rubber ball like we use today. So they're often used bladders of animals, like inflated bladders. Or a pig skin in football. Like they're made of leather, they are technically carcasses. They're just not as explicitly

Tanner

Yeah, we've kind of removed all the Recognizable parts.

Andi

Yeah. But like, it's still made from an animal, so it's not like that much of a stretch to me. Yeah.

Tanner

I could see like some sci fi writer being like, oh, you know what we call them pigskins today. What if it's an actual animal in the future, or like in my. dystopian, apocalyptic future.

Andi

I think this would come from fantasy if it comes

Tanner

from, Yeah.

Andi

you know, like the Dothraki. Yeah. So I guess,

Tanner

Could be. 10

Andi

It's pretty weird, pretty creepy.

Tanner

Yeah.

Sups

The second sport. Anubismus

Tanner

Okay.

Sups

And so in this port, which has mentions in, Ancient Egypt there's basically sort of a labyrinth, and there are wild animals who are in this labyrinth. Each participant is blindfolded and then they are released in this labyrinth from different corners. The goal of the game is to successfully exit this labyrinth. This has the way of determining justice because they believe that an individual accused of crime was. Considered to be guilty until they prove their innocence, So these were like criminals, like cases that they couldn't decide. They were like, if they are true.

Tanner

If the gods thought you were innocent. You could make it out.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

Okay.

Tanner

So there's a maze or labyrinth and they put blindfolded players in and then they release wild animals and if you can make it out alive. you win.

Sups

You are not guilty. Basically.

Tanner

Yes.

Andi

So it's got some like gladiator elements there where it's like you're a potential criminal and so we are gonna make Yeah. Trial by

Tanner

know, crowd

Andi

Yeah. It's awful. Lot of work.

Tanner

you

Andi

To build a whole

Tanner

kill someone, you could do it easier, but if if you were

Andi

worried like, do people watch this? Or like,

Sups

there, were mentions of like people gathering to see this justice.

Tanner

like, the

Andi

Yeah. Like the gladiators. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Okay. Yeah. Obviously like. The definition of sport is kind of

Tanner

changing. You can't be a professional, Player.

Sups

Yeah, no, no, no,

Andi

Well that's what I was going to say, I was like, it seems like a lot of work if you know, it's real to have to like, you'd have to make new labyrinths because if the same guy Gets accused multiple times. He just could memorize the route out of the labyrinth.

Tanner

only problem is the wild dogs. Yeah, yeah. Unless they like,

Andi

what I'm

Tanner

build One new wall. and then you're like,

Andi

just runs

Sups

you're fucked. He just runs straight over it.

Andi

Full speed into the wall.

Sups

surprise.

Andi

I feel like it's too complex. It sounds fictional in the real world. It's literally like stand on this scale with this goose and like, Oh, you're too heavy. You're dying. Like it's, this is too complicated.

Tanner

yeah, it would save time and money and effort to just like, let the animals. go and see if you can outrun them,

Sups

you know?

Tanner

like,

Andi

Go and see if You don't need the maze as well. It's kind of like too many extra things. It sounds fictional to me because it's too complicated. Like, isn't there some... Book or a movie like called the maze runner like

Tanner

Yeah. Right.

Andi

not literally

Tanner

from the mummy or the book of the dead or something.

Andi

Yeah, right like I mean Are in the extant? Labyrinths in egypt that you can go see like i've never heard of anything like that Which is you know, never a great argument, but like I don't know So, I feel like that one, to me, sounds much more fictional than the first one. The first one sounds very real in that argument, where it's like, it's simply just keep this goat

Tanner

The rules are so

Sups

are so simple. Yeah.

Tanner

When you think of games in sports, you need to think of like, the gear, the prep time, the officials or like rules and like this one it takes construction.

Andi

Yeah, yeah, yeah, It does have coliseum vibes, but I don't know. Sounds a little too complicated to Me

Tanner

too,

Sups

Okay. more. Alright, so sport number three duck fight.

Andi

Duck fight.

Sups

Yeah, yes. So now we're. Taking a leap from the realm of human sports to a little bit of animal sports.

Tanner

Okay.

Sups

now we go to Cambodia This has existed for more than 600 years. Where ducks are raised specifically for fights, And the only way the match ends is when one of them

Tanner

them So

Andi

chicken fighting but with ducks. Why ducks?

Sups

the Cambodian Hindus believe that the blood of the dead duck is used to scare away evil spirits. this is always played in the temple grounds and then they say now the balance and the harmony is restored so the owners do everything to prep the duck in top condition, It's treated as like a member of the family,

Andi

Yeah,

Tanner

love them too much then. Yeah. they're not

Sups

yeah,

Tanner

forever. exactly.

Andi

It's just until one duck is alive. Uhhuh. And that duck is the king of ducks. And what happens to that duck?

Sups

That duck is like treated as like royalty and all the other. Yeah. And all the other ducks that I could take it home and cook and I

Tanner

Oh, okay.

Sups

yeah,

Andi

They don't waste the duck. So

Tanner

they just need the blood for the temple. And then,

Sups

temple. And

Tanner

the winner is, like, pardoned, like the Turkey at Thanksgiving.

Andi

Yeah. Um, the

Tanner

of all the

Andi

what the hell

Tanner

So it sounds to me like they wanted to cleanse their temple with duck blood and they're like, I don't want to choose which duck to kill. Let's just have them

Sups

Let's just

Andi

you know? It's literally cockfighting, but with ducks. Right,

Tanner

and they want them to die.

Andi

And my thing is like, chicken fighting, I can understand because, they have Sharp claws, and

Tanner

claws, and they have

Andi

sharp beaks, but like, and they're very territorial, and they can't really fly very well, so like, that makes sense. roosters are mean. Ducks are rapists, but I don't know how like, mean they are, and like, I don't know, like, with webbed feet, like, how do they kill each other?

Tanner

Doesn't make any sense. And Why don't they just fly away?

Andi

you know, Yeah, yeah, ducks can fly really well. So I'm very skeptical of this in that sense, that, like, Why are they ducks?

Tanner

less creeped out and more confused. like, how does

Andi

Yeah.

Tanner

work? Oh, man. It sounds pretty believable in terms of like, how you get it set up.

Andi

Yeah.

Tanner

a bunch of ducks.

Andi

You just and like, people make animals fight. Yeah. Like, that's believable.

Tanner

hmm.

Andi

ducks?

Tanner

So many questions.

Andi

They just got their corkscrew penises, like,

Tanner

that's all I know about them.

Andi

like one of the only things I know about ducks. but then the other argument there, It's like, we could say, like, we don't believe this is real, but like, what fictional universe has ducks fighting each

Tanner

other? Right?

Andi

Like, what is that? Like, literally, what, where'd that come from? Right. If that's not real... Where'd it come

Tanner

Right?

Andi

Is there

Tanner

I think

Andi

where there are, like, I'm thinking Ninja Turtles, but ducks. I have no clue.

Tanner

like, Duck

Andi

Yeah,

Tanner

it's

Sups

Oh no, I'm

Andi

Yeah, so it's definitely one of those things where it's like, sounds weird enough to be real.

Tanner

Yeah

Andi

But also, like, I don't know enough about ducks. I have a lot to Yeah.

Tanner

I think this one's in the middle for me. so

Sups

Okay. one more. All right. This should clear all doubts.

Tanner

Yeah, right. I

Sups

Sport number four. Shatni chulnu.

Tanner

Okay.

Sups

Ever heard? Okay. So this is an

Tanner

think I can even say it.

Andi

it.

Sups

extreme version of hopscotch, I would say very popular in Mongolia during 600 to 700 AD, when Mongolia was ruled by the Khanates. Which is basically like a tribal

Andi

Mm

Sups

500 years later, Cengiz Khan takes over,

Andi

right. And

Sups

then he unites all of them. So this is just Yeah.

Andi

that

Sups

Right. Game is super simple. Because when you're a nomadic tribe, construction isn't your thing, but building bridges is. And In this game, basically you had. To test the strength off like how well they've been building these bridges. They're built these bridges like over rivers or like valleys And these panels some of them would be fragile and the

Andi

idea

Sups

to cross

Andi

Right, you have to move quickly, you have to be able to make quick bridges and test them and I guess you make a game of it?

Tanner

Yeah, yeah.

Sups

But at the same time, it was like we don't want to carry all the weak people, So this was of like letting go, like, you fall down and then you left behind. So the idea was there.

Tanner

guess It's awfully... Dark. like, well, just build a better bridge. Yeah, yeah.

Andi

Yeah, But Who's going to agree to play a sport where you have to run across a bridge that might break, you know, so like to be situations like we know happened in the real world where certain kinds of people are made to play these in order to test them. This to me, though, this is a video game.

Tanner

Like,

Andi

Yeah. Right. Like like, or like in Indiana

Tanner

Indiana Jones

Andi

Yeah. Where he has to spell the right word to spell thing. Yeah. Yeah. Like, it makes complete sense in the idea that like, This group would need to build bridges. They would come up with a way of testing them. So like criminals or something, you know. that makes complete sense.

Tanner

complete sense. That you

Andi

would test them using people who you don't value very much. But like,

Tanner

using people who

Andi

would they build a bad bridge though?

Tanner

Well, they wanted it to be the strongest that it could be, right? Yeah,

Sups

So like,

Andi

what are these guys like jumping

Tanner

so I guess, maybe no one loses sometimes.

Andi

I don't know. It sounds a little too, imaginatively dark,

Tanner

Yeah.

Andi

not like real world

Tanner

dark. Right? Because if I In a group that was trying to, like, move across the land and build bridges and stuff. I would think that I would value the people in my tribe more than, I would want to get rid of them, you know? Yeah. See, that's where it sounds like A little too far for me.

Andi

yeah, because this is a video game. Okay, well, can you repeat the four of them for us before we guess which one is stranger than fiction and is actually real?

Sups

Okay, well, can you repeat the four before we guess Sport number three, duck fight. And sport number four, chutney chulnu,

Tanner

Alright. Wow. Ooh. Um.

Andi

Okay. Which one do you think is the actually real one? Because they've all been presented to us as if they're real, but only one of them is actually real.

Tanner

it's between the duck one and the first one, the horse one. Mm-hmm.

Andi

I'm guessing it's the first one.

Tanner

Okay.

Andi

on that principle of, it's the simplest game.

Tanner

it's the simplest. it makes the most... sense to me, like how a game comes up, I could see people riding horses and throwing around dead animals, and then, it's tradition,

Andi

It's just a it's a ball. Yeah. Essentially. Like it's just is kind of like, it's a more gruesome sounding ball. Right. So to me, like that seems okay. Like it's keep away on horses,

Tanner

but the ball

Andi

just happens to be a

Tanner

Right?

Andi

I don't know, like, okay.

Tanner

Yeah. That's not so crazy when you kind of remove the bloody part.

Andi

Yeah. it's on the list because it's gruesome and bloody. But like, also like they're athletes.

Tanner

Yeah. train,

Andi

it's not a punishment kind of sport, like the lions in Rome or whatever. Yeah. So that to me, Makes it sound more realistic. And yeah, the ducks, I also agree, that sounds possible because, humans make animals fight each other. I've never heard of ducks.

Tanner

the

Andi

The other two sound too complicated and too dark. They sound fictional, like, fictionally

Tanner

fictionally So I'm going to go with the duck one.

Sups

Okay. Okay, duck fight. Okay, cool.

Andi

Bouskashi.

Sups

alright. Okay, cool. So let's start with the sports that you didn't pick. And then you had some critical comments about those sports. Let's see how

Andi

this. So, sport number

Sups

So sport number four, extreme version of hopscotch where people jumping from one bridge to another. And if they miss it, they fall down.

Andi

you can use the

Sups

in squid games.

Andi

Oh, it's in Squid Games. I didn't watch that, Supes.

Sups

so

Andi

and dark for me.

Tanner

fall

Sups

I don't know why I was reading about the Mongolian history. And then I started reading about bridges during. So I thought, okay, let's combine these two. And then, yeah,

Andi

right, Right, Okay. Squid games.

Tanner

and dark games.

Andi

good place for inspiration. Squid games.

Sups

Yeah.

Tanner

Great choice. all

Andi

We basically could have called this episode squid games.

Sups

games. Yes. All right. Sport number two, Anubispus,

Tanner

Sounds like Anubis.

Sups

right. It is. So in Egypt, the God of funeral rites, the protector of graves and the guide to the underworld, Anubis, this is inspired from ancient Egyptians books or mythology

Tanner

I know in like the texts, like the Book of the dead, they talk about like, what happens after you die.

Sups

correctly Okay. Now we're down to two. We'll go to sport number three. Duck fight. It's from a video game.

Tanner

It's a

Sups

nothing to do with Cambodia and the blood part is actually true for cockfight in Bali. The Balinese Hindus,

Andi

Oh, yeah. There is

Sups

a video game where the ducklings are fighting against each other. Yes,

Andi

just

Tanner

basically my,

Sups

that video game. They're just like fight

Andi

fight video game. duck

Sups

game. That's it.

Tanner

That's amazing! I mean... I

Andi

Right,

Sups

Mortal

Andi

but with ducks. so we had a TV show. We had books and

Sups

game. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So which means sport number one is absolutely true. This is the national sport of even played today. And actually, if you watch the movie Rambo three, you will see Sylvester Stallone. Also on a horseback. Wait.

Tanner

Stop! No way!

Sups

Yeah. Yes. This Buzkashi has been shown in quite a few Hollywood, Bollywood movies. So it's like,

Andi

I mean, that, that set of skills, can you imagine, like, you have to be super good at riding a horse to the point where you don't use your hands to ride the horse, which is... Super impressive.

Sups

Yeah,

Andi

Yeah, You know strong you'd have to be to hold that in one hand

Tanner

fighting off other

Andi

Yeah. Oh man. This sounds brutal.

Tanner

gruesome. It's bloody. I should have

Andi

I should have known. Thanks for listening to this episode of I Should Have Known. We'll be continuing our Stranger Than Fiction themed month for Halloween next week. Your Quizmaster will be Tanner, and he will do an episode on True Crime Podcasts, so kind of meta, I guess, so be on the lookout for that, and as always, I'm going to pick the ducks,
