Andiboy. I'm so out of my
SupsIn this is not a sad song, this is her expressing gratitude. To all her
Andikind of a twist on the breakup song.
TannerI know these people and this song, so. It's pretty believable for
Andime. Typical Tanner confidence,
TannerI know
Andihow soups makes lies.,his lies are always like, damn it. Hello and welcome to this episode of I Should Have Known, the trivia game show that can't be trusted. Each week, one of our Quizmasters will present you with four facts about a topic, but one of those facts is a lie. We are celebrating anti Valentine's for the month of February It is our traditional February theme. our quiz master today is Supes.
SupsSupes
AndiAnd Supes is bringing back a classic anti Valentine's Day. Episode, we are doing breakup songs three, so he'll present us with four breakup songs, but one of his facts about them is a lie. So join me, Andy, and our other host Tanner in figuring out which one it is. This
SupsDeen. Always
Andione of our most popular episodes. I think breakup songs two was our most popular last year.
TannerMm.
SupsOkay, so maybe third time's the
Tannermaybe. We haven't covered all of the breakup songs? yet?
Supswe're only getting started, Tanner. Okay. let's get going with the PQQ of the week. Bob Dylan wrote and recorded the hit It Ain't Me, Babe, but what couple added their own spin to this famous breakup song?
TannerBob Dylan, It Ain't Me Babe. Famous couple.
AndiDoes
TannerIs it Sonny and Cher? Simon and Garfunkel.
AndiThey weren't a couple.
Tannerthey're a duo. say,
Supssaid couple.
Tannermm, yes, Yes. yes. I don't know. Stevie Nicks and one of her other band mates.
Supsand one of her
TannerOh, Johnny Cash.
Supsband mates. Johnny Cash does love
AndiOkay.
TannerJohnny Cash does like to do covers and remakes. Yes.
SupsAll right. So we've got, four songs, four facts, four breakups, but you will notice that all of these songs have a very similar team.
AndiOther than their, their breakup
Supsright. Right. Yeah.
Tannerrigged up songs. Okay.
SupsThank you.
AndiSo the fact is just a lie though. Right, right.
SupsRight. It's just, I twisted the fact. Yeah. Fact number one, Amy Winehouse wrote tears dry on their own based on the lyrics of ain't no mountain high Enough
TannerAmy Winehouse.
Andiso we've done Amy Winehouse for breakup
Tannerof
Andihad a lot of the, unfortunately for her, I guess.
SupsAll right. So let's start with the lyrics and as usual, I'm not going to sing. So Okay. The song goes something like this. All I can ever be to you. is a darkness that we know and this regret I got accustomed to once it was so right when we were at our high waiting for you in the hotel at night. Okay. this song is from the very famous Back to Black album released in 2006. the song was written during when Amy was facing a lot of hardship in her personal life. Her boyfriend, Blake Felder Civil, abandoned Amy to go back to as ex. and in fact, most of the songs in this album, Back to Black, about him. this song was produced, by Salam Remy. And when The writing song, Remy found online leaks of some of the isolated backing vocals of Ain't No Mountain High Enough, and he thought this would be a great idea as like the premise of the song, So it's not like the entire song is based out of Ain't No Mountain High Enough. But They took like some of the lyrics
TannerInteresting. Yeah.
SupsActually in the whole back to black album. This is the most uplifting, song because in this song, Amy finally realizes that she can move on from Blake.
AndiThe redemption arc.
TannerI'm
AndiHer Lyrics. are based on that song. See, that's the part that I think is kind of a little sketchy. Cause that song is like all about how you're going to chase somebody. Like there's nothing is going to stop. Ain't no mountain high enough. Like it's not going to stop me from. Getting to you, babe.
TannerRight, But then Her lyrics are like very sad. And not so aspirational.
AndiI don't know what the backup vocals in that song say. Maybe there's like a really weird like, didn't hear that in the background?
TannerYeah. I never pay attention to the backing vocals, you know? like I never do that part of the karaoke song.
AndiYeah. I mean, but you're such like a musical genius, Tanner. Yeah. You're like so good at songs
Tannersing the whole Song from heart. Yeah. By heart.
AndiGo ahead, sing any part of a Bon
TannerAin't no Mountain High enough. Ain't no river wide enough. Ain't no. mmm, no. That line
Andimean, that line is in there, but it's not where
Tannerit.
Supsit.
Tannerman.
AndiSo for this one, the fact, it's a little, sketchy because like, I could see how you could maybe use some of the, track, melody of the music, your
Tannersample songs all the
AndiYeah. You could sample part of that and that could work with like a creepy song or sad song and kind of be a fun thing, but the lyrics themselves.
TannerWow
AndiSeems a little weird.
TannerEspecially for someone like Amy Winehouse who
Andikind of famously wrote all her own stuff, like she's very poetic. So I don't know. That's, that's, it's a little sketchy to me.
Tannerso. Fact number two.
Andibut we need to hear more.
SupsOkay. Fact number two, Look at Her Now by Selena Gomez is a diss at Hailey Baldwin after Selena's breakup with Justin Bieber.
AndiBieber. Oh wow. Do you know this song though? Alright, will give
SupsDo you know this song though? Okay. All right. I'm going to give you the lyrics. All right. They fell in love one summer, a little too wild for each other. Shiny till it wasn't. Feels good till it doesn't. It was her first real lover, his too, till he had
TannerMm. Mm.
SupsOkay. so this is from the third studio album called Rare. It was released in 2020. this song was released a day after another song from this album, which is called Lose You to Love Me. Which was released
AndiThe
SupsAnd so this song came out on the 15th, in this song, Selena alludes that Hailey Baldwin, destroyed their relationship. the official reason, just by the way,
Tannerofficial, according to who?
Supsaccording to the media, according to sources, right?
Andiher publicist.
SupsThe official reason why Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber broke up is that they were very busy and they had conflicting work schedules and they could never make time for each other.
TannerOkay.
Supsjust very busy people. They broke up in 2018 and then Justin started seeing Hailey
AndiHailey Baldwin. So the song implies that, it wasn't that he was too busy for Selena, it's that he was too busy with someone
Supselse. Right, right. when this song released just on the day. Hayley Baldwin put up an Instagram post saying, I will kill
Tannersaying, I love Katie.
Supsfans of course think is a message to Selena.
AndiI'm pretty, like, out of my depth. I definitely don't follow any of them on Instagram, so, like, I have no idea. For some reason, in my head, I thought that they dated, like, way longer ago, like, I thought they were, like, teenagers or whatever. personally, I think it's pretty stupid that either of them are fighting over Justin
Tannerthey dated that much
AndiYou know, maybe Suits is just playing on the old tired trope of like girls fighting over guys And really she was just like I don't care. I hope you guys are happy.
TannerRight, yeah,
Andiwinning Golden Globes Like don't care whatever you're doing I don't know
TannerI don't know. But maybe they're just friends. I honestly have
Andimaybe they like each other I have no clue but I think that could maybe be a
TannerThere's a lot of
Andilike Yeah. There could be people listening who are like, How do you guys not know about that? Like, I have no idea. these are good episodes when we do the music ones cause sometimes people will say like, how do you guys know so much stuff? How do you guys so smart about so much stuff? Like, because I don't know any of this.
Supsis,
TannerWell, we're only halfway,
SupsAll
Andiboy. I'm so out of my
SupsIn Alright, moving on to fact number three. Flowers by Miley Cyrus is a metaphor for how her relationship with Liam Hemsworth burnt out just like their 2. 5 million dollar home.
AndiWait, what
TannerCyrus home burned down?
AndiI know this song. Yes. Yes. Obviously. Buy
Tannerflowers. Like where she says,
Andiahead. Sing it. She's
Tannerlike, I'm going to buy myself flowers or something.
AndiYeah, You
Tannerneed to buy me flowers. I'll buy them myself.
SupsOkay. I'm going to say the lyrics and you're going to get it. Right? Okay. We were good. We were gold. We were good. Kind of dream that can be sold. We were right till we weren't. Built a home and watched it burn. Hmm, I didn't want to leave you. I didn't want to lie. Started to cry. But then remembered I. I can buy myself flowers. Write my name in the sand. Talk to myself for hours. Say things you don't understand. I can take myself dancing. And I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you
Tannercan. I
AndiI always thought that was where why are you holding your own hand? That's super weird. What is that? But anyway, yes,
SupsFlowers is the track from Miley Cyrus's eighth studio album called Endless Summer Vacations, released in 2023. The song. Made a new record on Spotify, gaining 96 billion streams in the first seven days. now going back to the fact and the relationship, Miley Cyrus was dating famous Australian actor Liam Hemsworth. Well, so they even got engaged twice, finally getting married in 2018. And their marriage only lasted about eight months before their divorce was finalized in 2020. Flowers is an ode to their sad relationship where Miley affirms that she doesn't need Liam to be happy. she connects their relationship. with their home, which burned in the Woolsey fires in 2018, a lot of celebrities lost their homes So this song is basically how their relationship burnt out just like their home
AndiWow. this one, not only do I feel better because I actually knew it, it's kind of Obvious? Wait, like the lyrics mention a house burning down?
TannerRight.
AndiTheir house burned down? that can't be a lie unless their house didn't burn down. Right. Or it
TannerThe chorus of I don't know if I remember the verses. it's just
Andia coincidence. No, you can't, you can't have a house, burned down, and then write a song about a house burning down and then be like, those are different houses.
SupsYeah, I actually meant my Malibu
Andilike, Sorry, that was actually a metaphor. People, it's not literal when it's like, but your house literally burned. So, I mean, again, I don't know enough about celebrity gossip and all this stuff, but this one seems the most like yes, clearly X leads to
Tannertwo dots that you just need to connect. it's Super
Andiconnect. Assuming that that's a real line in that song.
TannerI'm very confident in this being true.
AndiYeah.
TannerBut we have one more.
SupsWe have one more.
TannerI know these names. I know that they dated. I know that he dated a lot of people.
AndiDo you know this song?
TannerI do know this song. Yes. Thank you, next.
Supsso let me give you the lyrics, Thought I would end up with Sean, but he wasn't a match. Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh. Even almost got married. And for Pete, I'm so thankful. Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm, cause he was an angel.
AndiAnd
SupsThis song is from the fifth studio album, also named Thank You, Next, released in 2019. It's a self empowerment song where Ariana looks at her past relationships and how each of these shaped her as a person, this is not a diss song, this is not a sad song, this is her expressing gratitude. To all her
Andikind of a twist on the breakup song. Mm-Hmm. Right? Like, it, it's about a breakup. They broke up. Yeah, yeah. yeah. But it's not like a sad song.
SupsI'm moving on.
AndiYeah. Thank you. Next.Exactly.
SupsSo, when she was writing the song, she was on and off. With Pete Davidson. They were dating, breaking up, dating, breaking up. So she didn't know what was going to happen. So she wrote multiple verses, one for a situation where she was married, one for a situation where she was not married and one for a situation where nothing happened. Right? So she had to account for all of this.
Tannermultiple
Andithis.
SupsThen they were engaged for about only about four months before breaking up. And thank you. Next is all about embracing the bumps in the road and like accepting it. So finally, when they officially broke up, Arianna knew that she had a situation for
Andireleasing this. song.
SupsSo
TannerSo, all those names are real people she dated. in the song. Okay. Cause It doesn't have to be. You know, she could put whatever name she wants in there.
AndiYeah.
TannerYeah.
AndiI do know they dated. So, I'm like, yes,
Tannerknow song.
AndiYes, I know this song. I know some of the lyrics that he's talking about. And I don't really see any reason why that wouldn't be an issue for someone writing a song. Unless, did she really write her own song? You know, maybe she didn't, she didn't even write it. And it was like her songwriter who's like, Ariana, are you guys together? Or, like, what's going on here? You know? So, so that's the lie, is it's like actually like, it wasn't her, it was like her songwriter being like, Ariana, um What's this line gonna be? You and
Tannerwhat's
Andigoing on here? Yeah. I don't know. I kind of just convinced myself. I like, that
Tannerknow,
Andibut yeah.
Tannerof just convinced myself I I like song personally, but yeah.
AndiYeah. In her
TannerBut I think I'm less confident on the first two because I'm not so aware of the songs and the characters involved. I know these people and this song, so. It's pretty believable for
Andime. Typical Tanner confidence, doing up the WMC. But do agree that like, I'm more skeptical in other places.
TannerI like how you saw how this one could be a lie. That's interesting. That's creative
AndiI
TannerI know
Andihow soups makes lies.,his lies are always like, damn it. Like, oh, like I didn't think of that. I'm also like this whole theme, wondering what the theme is.
TannerHidden
AndiHidden connection. Hmm. So, we're going to take our official guesses on which one of your breakup song facts we think is a lie, and maybe try to guess the theme. but before we do that, can you please repeat them for us?
Supsus? Yes, Fact number one. Amy Winehouse wrote Tears Dry on their own, based on the lyrics of Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Fact number two, Look at Her Now by Selena Gomez is a diss at Hailey Baldwin after Selena's breakup with Justin Bieber. fact number three, Flowers by Miley Cyrus is a metaphor for how her relationship with Liam Hemsworth burnt out just like their 2. 5 million home. fact number four, Ariana Grande had to rewrite the lyrics of Thank U, Next multiple times because of her on and off relationship with Pete Davidson.
TannerOne is false. I think it's the first one.
AndiYeah. Those lyrics don't seem to line up.
TannerI like the idea of like, not matching the vibe with the words but I think that it's just a coincidence maybe that it's like. a similarity between No Matter Not High Enough and her song. I think that she didn't actually base it on
Andiit. or it went to
Tanneryeah.
AndiLike, not based on that. No, like this is a, catty women fighting over a man. Like I'm saying, no, that's not what happened. that's not true that she didn't write a diss track about another woman.
Tannerdidn't
AndiI think she's a better person.
Tannerdiss track about another woman. It's a better thing. Yeah.
AndiUm, breakup songs. Yes.
TannerYeah, obviously,
AndiThey're all songs about breakups.
Tannerbut I think they're all not sad breakup songs. They're all like, I'm moving on.
Andithat's true. Maybe, yeah, that's the twist. Is we're not wallowing in sorrow. We are, strong, independent women. don't need all of these celebrity men in our lives. That's my guess. Sure. guesses, Supes. right.
Supsfirst of all, congratulations, You got the team, right? every song is actually someone like I'm moving on like, I'm done, right? yes. yes. Like I'm back. The lie is song number two. Okay. because that song is not about any diss at Hailey Baldwin. The song is actually no matter what is the challenge, I can rise above,, it's a very sweet upbeat, number that kind of celebrates. Selena's comeback
AndiYeah, so the her is, her, not another woman, but
Tanneryeah. Mm Yeah. Well that makes me feel even better. then.
Andifeel
Tannerthat's good. Yay. Who needs Justin Bieber? I'm glad that that's the lie.
Andithat makes me feel better.
SupsYeah. that one I'm very happy that you
AndiI know. I got it. I got it. it. was, that was for the girls. That one. Yeah. Yeah. I should have known. Thanks for listening to this episode of I Should Have Known. We'll be continuing with our anti Valentine's theme this month. And if you'd like to give us a Valentine. we would be deeply grateful if you could leave a review, especially like a comment with words and stuff, you know, wax poetic about, your love for the I should have known. Show. we would really love that. And next week we will be continuing with, hopefully not too sad episode. Tanner will be your quiz master on loneliness and the science of loneliness. So be on lookout for that. And as always
TannerBoop.
