Speaker 1:

Yo yo yo. Welcome back to the Further your Lifestyle podcast conversations on lifestyle passions and hustles. My name's Chris, I'm your host and I'm super excited to be back here having the conversation with you. Episode 170 today, and we're talking about a topic which has actually been quite dear to me in the last, probably the last six weeks or so, even more. It's called chase the carrot. Now, if you don't know that whole I don't know, is it a story or just maybe a cliche around you dangle a carrot in front of a horse to keep it moving and keep it gaining that momentum and pursuing the getting to the finish line, for instance. That's really what I want to talk about, but in the sense of our own parallels to life and achieving our goals, our dreams and furthering our lifestyles. And there isn't any perfect formula for this. This is really just another way that we can pursue goals, but the idea is we want to have a framework or a process that enables us to get that success ideally guaranteed, but that's not necessarily possible. But there are a number of key principles I believe that we can put into play, put into practice, that will significantly increase our chances to actually make this happen, and there's a whole bunch of different things that we're going to dive into, but the first thing before we roll the intro is there's a couple of things that we do need to make sure that we have aligned before we start talking about chasing the carrot, and it's two key things. They're two core drivers actually talking about chasing the carrot, and it's two key things. They're two core drivers actually.

Speaker 1:

Number one is purpose and number two is why. When we have an understanding of our purpose, it gives us a direction and clarity. A clear purpose helps us understand where we are headed and what we're trying to do. Now I've spoken about the North Star, having your North Star understand where you want to be. When you understand where you want to be, that gives you the direction and clarity. It gives you the motivation and energy to actually work towards it. That strong sense of purpose, it will motivate you. But it also gives you fulfillment, and when you have fulfillment with whatever it is you're pursuing, through that purpose you do, you feel like you have a purposeful and meaningful life.

Speaker 1:

Number two is your why. Now it's great to understand where you want to be going, but why are you going there? Like why, what is that? And that connects you to this deeper rooted motivation or a reason behind your intention, and together I guess it really does bring that whole sense of your purpose of life. But there's a purpose of why you're doing it and then there's a why of why you want to do it and I think when you understand why are you doing this, why do you want this to be your purpose, it does, it gives you that deep-rooted motivation, but also it will enable you to have the resilience as you push through whatever the troubles, challenges, obstacles and things that you're going to have to deal with will be or arise as you go through this journey. The other thing is it enables to have this alignment and authenticity towards your greater life. And I think, for me, when I talk about furthering your lifestyle, you want to make sure you've got all your values, all of your life and all components of that life matching and in sync. Whether it be me building a business to me trying to run it, to be a better version of myself, they all play in part of me trying to work towards the things that I want in furthering my lifestyle, creating the lifestyle that I want. And when you have all those things together the understanding of your purpose, the understanding of your why. It will enable you to be aligned and have that authentic approach to you finding what it is or actually getting to where you want to be. So that's that Now we're going to roll the intro in a second and then we're going to dive into a couple of questions, just to reflect on purpose and why, and then we're going to get into somewhat sense of practices or principles on how you can actually use the carrot to get you to where you want to be.

Speaker 1:

Let's roll the intro, so reflecting on purpose and why, a couple of questions I want you to just really consider before we get into this is number one is what is my purpose in pursuing this goal, whatever your goal is? Maybe it's a short-term goal, maybe it's a long-term goal, maybe it's this, maybe you want to have an empire of your own, but what is the purpose of pursuing that goal? Why is that goal important to you? How does this goal actually align with your values and your long-term vision? What impact do I want to make through achieving this goal, and what will achieving this goal mean for me and those around me? I think you really need to ask those questions to yourself, reflect on those and have an answer for them before we dive into this. And the reason why is because number one of the principles and the practices that I'm about to go through is have a clear vision and goal.

Speaker 1:

When we know what we want and we know how to set the goals around, that, it means we can define success in the right way and it helps us provide direction and focus. It also enables us to, when things fall off the beaten track and we get distracted or things don't go to plan, we have something to fall back onto. We can fall back onto that path, that track of where we're going, what is our vision, what is our goal? And when we know what that is, it means, when things get rocky, we can fall back onto it and have some sense of motivation, some sense of sanity and some sense of I know why I'm doing this. This is why I'm doing it. Therefore, you can push forward right.

Speaker 1:

And it makes point number two, which is principle two consistency and persistence. It's very hard to show up daily and it's very hard to persevere through challenges when we don't know why we're doing it right, which is why that first part is so important. But when we have consistency and persistence. That means we're able to show up daily, and that's what it's going to take with the carrot, right. Having that carrot in front of you, that thing dangling, is going to enable you to consistently move forward. Because you're chasing the carrot, you're chasing the thing that you want. When you know what you want, you're willing to get your hands dirty, you're willing to get involved, you're willing to go the extra mile, you're willing to learn, you're willing to teach, you're willing to share, and that is what's going to help you over a long period of time. Doing those small steps will continue to provide the next step to where you want to be going, and it builds that momentum like a snowball. It also means we're going to persevere through challenges, when there's setbacks, when there's challenges, when there's issues, when there's problems. It means you're willing to learn from those failures, but you're also willing to keep pushing forward right.

Speaker 1:

This is where things get a little bit more tango-ish adaptability, just like in the tango. You've got to be flexible. You've got to be willing to adjust and go with the flow. We've got to adapt to strategies right. Being flexible is absolutely key when chasing the carrot, because sometimes the carrot's going to feel like it's a bit further away. Sometimes the carrot's also going to feel really close. So there's times where you can double down and there's times when you can pull back. Take it easy, rest, relax, and the path is never linear. We've been talking about this over the last few weeks. So understand when you can pivot, understand when you can be flexible when you have to throttle or pull back.

Speaker 1:

The other part of this is openly be willing to continuously learn. If you're not open to new information, if you're not open to new information, if you're not open to new experiences, if you're not willing to learn, then fortunately you'll be stuck. That's the short of it. You've got to be willing to learn and continue to re-evaluate what we know and see if there's new things that we can take on board. We can never have all the information. We don't know what we don't know. So find out what we don't know.

Speaker 1:

Number four the most important part of all of this is action and execution. You've got to take action. It's simple as that. If you don't do anything about it, nothing's going to happen. Right, ideas are great. Having a plan is great. Having goals are great. Knowing what needs to happen is great, but if you do not break down those goals into actionable steps and then actually take action like an execute, then it's pointless, all of it is pointless. You've got to manage your time with this wisely, though. There's going to be things that you love to do and there's going to be things that you hate to do. Find ways to do both of them. Manage your time to do the hard stuff when it's easier to do, and find time to do the easy stuff when it's harder, when you're tired, for instance, right. That way, you can leverage the best of both worlds. It sounds simple, and it is, but it's very hard to implement. So that's why we're talking about it to get this, these principles, these practices in line and understand that. If we do this, then this is how we can get the results we want to see, and this is how we can leverage the carrot Number five is mindset and attitude.

Speaker 1:

Now, you can do this whole process with a positive attitude or a negative attitude. I would find it very hard if someone had a negative attitude about all this, because it's very hard to have a negative attitude when it's your purpose, your mission, your vision, your dream, your goal. If you know what you want, you should always be positive about it. Having that, I also understand, though, just to be fair, that sometimes things get stressful, things get challenging and it can be hard to be positive about the situation in the moment. But it's important to understand your why and when you have that, why you can be positive about the situation because you know it's a challenge that you have to overcome, which brings in the mentality of growth mindset. When we embrace the challenges and the opportunities to grow and we do it in confidence, our ability will improve and we will continue to achieve our goals. That's the way to do it.

Speaker 1:

Number six it's probably something which gets thrown around, but it's super important A support system, have a network. Surround yourself with people that are going to elevate you, that are going to be thinking like who you want to be thinking. They're game changers, they're trendsetters, they're innovators. Maybe that's who you want to be around, or maybe they're just. They're farmers, they're slow paced, they're easygoing, or maybe they're social butterflies, or maybe they're party goers. Look, I don't really care in the sense of who your support system is. Just make sure you understand that whoever you surround yourself with is what your influence is going to be. So be mindful of that, because that will be the ones that are influencing you to enable yourself to either do really well chasing the carrot or holding you back in chasing that carrot. You do need to seek feedback from these people as well, having people that can tell you how it is to call you out. Keep you honest, be kind, be candor. Absolutely crucial.

Speaker 1:

Number seven health and well-being. This one I've really been pressing into more and more this year and that's making sure that I am maintaining that balance. It's easier said than done. I get it, I totally get it. But it's not just about the mental, it is also the physical. And it's not just about the physical, it's really about the mental as well. I've been pretty good with the physical doing my running and all that the mental as well. I've struggled more this year. I'm getting better at it, finding ways to disconnect, finding ways to let loose. Because we have a healthy body and a healthy mind, you will be more productive and you'll be more resilient. It's that simple. So find a way to have work-life balance. Find a way to ensure that you're not burning out by having too much work right. Find a way to balance your work, relaxation and your hobbies. It's like the saying of happy wife, happy life, but in the sense it's about finding if you've got that work-life balance. It's the same thing as having a happy wife you will have a happy life. It's that simple.

Speaker 1:

Something we take for granted is reflecting and adjusting. You need to reflect on a regular basis. It's great having the carrot in front of you, but sometimes we can lose focus of why the carrot's there. Yes, we have our plan, we have our purpose, but you need to reflect on a regular basis to see are we actually having that carrot move forward or is it just still stuck in the same place? And understanding why. Why is it getting stuck? Are we going backwards? But why aren't we moving fast? Why aren't we moving in the direction we want to be going? It's not about going fast, it's about moving towards where we want to be. Reflect on that. It helps us understand what's working and what's not.

Speaker 1:

And then the key one I've spoken about this in the last few weeks is celebrating milestones. When you hit that milestone, whatever it is, is it a run, is it an achievement, is it a number, is it a KPI? Is it a year anniversary? Whatever it is, find a way to celebrate it and do it on a regular basis. This continues to maintain and seed in that positive motivation and momentum. Two more to go. Number nine is integrity and authenticity. Two more to go. Number nine is integrity and authenticity.

Speaker 1:

Stay true to your values. If you want your journey to be enjoyable and to be easier than just crazy, rocky roads, then be true to yourself. Know who you are. You've set your purpose. You've set your plan. You know why you're doing it. You know what you want. Don't tarnish that and don't ruin that by not being yourself. Set this foundation solid and strong, as early as possible and stick to it. When you bring in these bad habits and you're not having that integrity or you're not staying true to yourself, that's when things become a slippery slope. Be ethical. Do the things that you need to do that are important in sustaining success. Don't do the wrong thing. You know what the wrong thing are. It's going to be different depending on industry. It's going to be different depending on where you live, the laws whatever. Follow the laws. Be ethical and stay true to your values. And number 10 is the most important of them all in the sense of if you're not doing this, then I think we're probably a bit confused of why we're doing it.

Speaker 1:

You've got to enjoy the journey. You've got to have fun along the way. You've got to enjoy the process You've got to, while the end goal is what we want. That's what we're pushing towards. We want to eat that carrot, we want that carrot. We've got to remember that getting there is half the fun, because, by the time you get there, you're going to be exhausted. Half the fun because, by the time you get there, you're going to be exhausted, you're going to be tired, you're going to be and look, there'll probably be then something else to chase. Really, when you get there, you'll realize that it was the whole journey getting there. That's been the fun part. You can only know that at the end, though. So enjoy it, enjoy it. You deserve it.

Speaker 1:

You're doing all this work. Enjoy it, make it fun, find passion in it, and if there isn't passion in it, you've probably really got to understand is there purpose or why are you doing it? And it brings it full circle. These components, these 10 components, are super important. Most importantly, understand your purpose, understand your why, and then the rest should start to come to being, whether it's understanding your clear vision and goals, building that consistency and persistence, being adaptable, taking action with execution, bringing in the mindset and the right attitude, having a support system around you, but, most of all, also finding the health and being balanced while doing all this and then reflecting, adjusting once more, doing it all with integrity and authenticity of who you are and who you want to be.

Speaker 1:

By doing all this, having fun along the way. This is how you chase that carrot. This is how you get that carrot. I guarantee you that's how it happens. It's not going to happen overnight. It's not going to happen in two days. It's going to happen over a long period of time, however long that goal is for you. But that's how we do it. It doesn't necessarily guarantee it, it's not perfect, but it's going to get you the best result possible simply by following those steps. And you've got to be understanding that these steps they're going to take time. They're going to take time. This stuff is not just go take a break for 30 minutes and do all this and then it's done. This is going to be repetitive. It's going to take time. They're going to take time. This stuff is not just go take a break for 30 minutes and do all this and then it's done. This is going to be repetitive, it's going to be sometimes a slog, it's going to be a roller coaster, but with the purpose and why it's going to make it so much easier.
