Tonight. Dc Casting. Blade Needs a Director. Paul Giamatti Joins Star Trek and Enemy Mine Reboot. All that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight Comic books, sci-fi, fantasy and more.

Speaker 1:

If you're looking for a roundup of geeky news, you're in the right place. This is Multiverse Tonight, and here's your host, thomas Townley. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 217 of Multiverse Tonight. I'm, of course, your host, thomas Townley, and we just hit milestone. At the beginning of the month we entered, I believe it's our sixth year. Let me double check that real quick. And you know, looking at that show opening, I really do think we need a new one. But here's a thought If you're listening to this and you're talented, do me a favor, make me a new one and send it to MultiverseTonight at MultiverseTonightcom and you know you've seen, you've heard the show opening that I put at the beginning of the episode there, so I want something similar.

Speaker 1:

Our podcast is six. This podcast is six years old, launched June 6, 2018. We're still doing it, even though our numbers are low. Don't get me wrong. They kind of ebb and flow and I wouldn't mind having a larger audience. And, by the way, if you don't like the commercials that come in at mid-roll, then go over to my Ko-fi link, go over to my Ko-fi link, go over to Patreon, or even there should be a link in your show description too. It says support the show, hit that, send me a buck or two, send me a buck or two, and you know if I get enough. You know a few bucks If I get enough, a few bucks. If I get enough that it just makes this podcasting free for me, I won't take any more ads. How about that? That sound good, sound fine.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, for me personally there's not much. It's summer, it's hot, still waiting for things to be done in our new house so we can move in. But that's not looking until at least July or later before we get there. And you know, if you watch the video of the show, you'll see all those autographs over my shoulders. That's going to be. It's like I just got all these up and now I have to take them all back down, take them over to a new house and put them all back up again. I can guarantee you they won't be in the same order that they are now, you know. So maybe I'll have all the Star Trek autographs directly behind me or something. I don't know. I just kind of put them up that way as I was pulling autographs out of the folder that I had them in.

Speaker 1:

So let's go on, he said, with some DC Comics news. And we begin DC Comics news with DC announcing Multiverse's Collision Detected, a tie-in comic to Player First Games and Warner Bros Games' hit platformer. Now written by Brian Q Miller with art by John Samariva, multiverse's Collision Detected brings the DC Universe and the many worlds of multiverses together. With Batman, superman and Wonder Woman meeting Bugs Bunny while investigating the Star Child and the Witch, one can imagine other heroes and villains from the DC Universe and from multiverses colliding, hence the collision in the comic's title. Now, this isn't the first time that DC has released a tie-in comic to a video game, having collaborated with Epic Games on Batman slash, fortnite, zero Point back in 2021.

Speaker 1:

James Gunn's Superman movie has added more cast members. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Michaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald have joined the movie, which is currently filming and is set for a 2025 release date. However, hoover, who has collaborated with Gunn on projects like Guardians 3 and the Suicide Squad, has been cast as Daily Gunn gossip columnist. Cat Grant McDonald, not to be confused with the happy Gilmore and Hack star of the same name, who is a newcomer to the screen, will portray Daily Planet reporter Ron Troop. Peacemaker is also adding some new faces for season two. The Picard actor, sol Rodriguez, and the Office's David Denman are among the series newcomers to the show, which is currently in production. Dc Studios co-chief, james Gunn, will direct three episodes of season two of Peacemaker, which, of course, centers on John Cena's character from the Suicide Squad movie in 2022. Rodriguez will play Sasha Bordeaux, who debuted in the comics in 2000's Detective Comics number 751 and is known as an ally of Batman. Denman has been cast in as a yet unknown role.

Speaker 1:

Creature Commandos, the animated series that marks the start of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, is coming this December. Creature Commandos, which was completely written by Gunn, will be stocked with actors who can perform both in animation and live action, so that any future appearances by the Creature Commandos will have consistency in tone and performance. The series will star on a team led by Rick Flagg's father and include Nina Marchese, dr Phosphorus, frankenstein, bride of Frankenstein, gi Robot and Weasel. Now, of course, we saw Weasel was in the possession of Amanda Waller, the star of Suicide Squad, although exactly how much of the Suicide Squad is canon is still not clear. According to Variety's reporting of Creature Commando's presentation at the Anisea Animation Festival, it was confirmed that the bride played by Indira Varma will have a slightly different character design than her comic counterpart. While she boasts four arms in many of her comic appearances, she'll have just two in Creature Commandos, in part to help the practicality of translating her into both animation and live action. Creature Commandos was created by Grant Morrison and Doug Menke. The Bride boasts a romantic history with Eric Frankenstein and often operates as an agent of the secret organization Shade.

Speaker 1:

Warner Bros Animation and DC Studios are looking to continue telling Blue Beetle stories via the animated series currently in development. Sources close to production told Deadline that Mikael Poiga has been working on the project since early this year and will serve as the project showrunner and director, with Christine Martinez set as writer. Angel Manuel Soto and Garth Dunant-Ellicott, director and screenwriter of the 2023 film, will exec produce alongside John Rickard, who serves in the same capacity on the film. Gail Weisman, who is an EP on the film, will oversee the animated TV series for DC Studios. Now let's go on to the Marvel news.

Speaker 1:

Marvel News begins with the second season of Loki being a big hit for Disney Plus last year. The season also featured MCU newcomer Ki-Hoo Kwon as Ouroboros, aka OB, who audiences instantly fell in love with Before he was starring in MCU projects, of course, and winning an Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Kwon was known for his roles. He played as a kid, short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Data in the Goonies. Recently, kwan told Collider that he thinks of Loki's OB as a variant of Data. Kwan explained it was because I didn't audition for this role.

Speaker 1:

It was offered to me In the beginning. When I read the script I fell in love with the character right away, but I didn't quite know how to play him. I had meetings with our writers, with our showrunner, with Tom Hilson, and I was trying to pick their brains to see what their vision was for this character. They were very supportive and they offered a lot of suggestions and advice. I felt this tremendous pressure because I didn't want to disappoint the fans. I struggled for a long time and it was not until I went and saw the Ouroboros set and the stage that they were building the set on. It was called Roger Moore and you know Roger Moore played James Bond and Data from the Goonies loves James Bond, it dawned on me that OB could be a variant of Data from the Goonies. From that moment on, I knew exactly how I wanted to play him. The only thing is I just had time slip back into 1985 to try to remember what it was like to play this character, and has been really heartwarming.

Speaker 1:

Marvel's Blade reboot has now lost its second director. A report from the Wrap has confirmed that Yann Demange has parted ways with Marvel Studios' project, which will star Mahershala Ali as a new version of the titular Marvel vampire hunter. Demange is actually the second director to have officially signed on for Blade, replacing Basim Tariq, following his own exit from the project back in September of 2022. According to the reporting, demond's exit from Blade actually occurred a while ago and was described as entirely amicable. Marvel Studios veteran Eric Pearson is the most recent writer attached to the Blade script, working from a previous draft from Michael Starbury. At the moment, blade is slated for a fall 2025 release date, although from the looks of it, that's going to get pushed back into 2026 if they can't keep finding directors and writers.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, this summer we'll see the team-up that Marvel fans have been waiting to see on the big screen in Deadpool and Wolverine, and in honor of the movie, digiorno is releasing a slate of frozen pizza flavors that celebrate the heroes both unexpected and independent blends. In addition to being able to find these four flavors in your frozen pizza aisle, fans can head over and visit DiGiornocom slash Deadpool and Wolverine starring today to enter for a chance to win a number of exciting prizes from Deadpool, wolverine, merch to a pizza party in Los Angeles. You can learn more about the flavors below the flavors before Deadpool Wolverine lands on theaters in July 26. According to the press release quote, digiorno is joining forces with Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine in theaters July 26th for what can only be described as a good cinematic universe takeover. This collaboration defies the laws of common decency and will tickle taste buds of pizza lovers everywhere with a slice of chaos and mouthful of mischief. Digiorno is bringing the good straight to pretty, movie-going, pizza-loving pie holes. Nationwide.

Speaker 1:

Digiorno is unveiling new limited edition pizzas that were inspired by the movie and will take over the frozen foo's aisle starting June 2024. What does crazy taste like? Cheesy, spicy, saucy, widely inappropriate. These pies come in four completely collectible, jewel-worthy DiGiorno classic crust pizza varieties. Coming for a completely collectible, jewel-worthy DiGiorno classic crust pizza varieties.

Speaker 1:

The Wade Special, a sweet and salty combo not just for Mercs made with pineapple and black olives to pay homage to Wade Wilson's pizza in the first movie. Gimme Chimmy, a chimichanga-inspired pizza that has a fiesta for your taste buds and topped with spicy cumin sauce, beef topping, jalapeno and cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. The Spicy Wolvie Pie created with Wolverine and other meat lovers in mind, this pizza is stacked with pepperoni, chorizo and bacon. And the Maximum Pep, made with Maximum Flavor and Zero Regrets. Just like Deadpool's decisions, maximum Pep is piled high with sliced and diced pepperoni. None of those appeal to me, but I'm just a simple hamburger pizza guy. Maybe they suit you. I don't know exactly what's collectible about pizzas. I mean you keep those in your freezer for a long time. They're just going to get freezer burned and rot.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, let's go on with the Star Wars news. Roger roger, star Wars news begins with Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures Season 2, which has a brand new premiere date for Disney Plus and Disney Junior. Kai Brightstar is back with his friends Lys, soleil and Nubz on Wednesday, august 14th. They're growing and learning more about being Jedi and helping people across the galaxy. They're getting some new mission gear for the heroes. There will be bigger missions to face and more lessons as they learn to continue their Jedi training. Luckily for Kai and the rest of the team, they have each other, so there's no problem they can't face with the power of friendship and the Force. Yeah, I just threw up in my mouth a little too.

Speaker 1:

Atomic Mass Games, a subsidiary of Asmodee, has announced the end of development of two Star Wars games. Atomic Mass Games announced that it will be ending development on Star Wars X-Wing and Star Wars Armada, two majors games that involve small-scale or large-scale Starship fleet battles. Quote over the past few years, rising production costs, global manufacturing and pandemic-related challenges have made it increasingly difficult to produce high-quality, prepaid majors, which ultimately led to the decision to end development. Atomic Mass Games wrote on their blog You'll always have what's there already and whatever comes in the future, I guess.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, let's roll on to the Star Trek news. It begins with Paul Giamatti joining the cast of the upcoming Paramount Plus original series, star Trek Starfleet Academy. In a reoccurring role he will play the season one villain, a man with an ominous past connected to one of our cadets Co-showrunners and exec producers. Ox Kurtzman and Noga Lando, in a joint statement said sometimes you're lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge Star Trek fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us. The sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast. He joins previously announced Holly Hunter, who will star in the series as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy. The series will begin production later this summer.

Speaker 1:

A villain, alex, alex, alex. No, star Trek series needs a villain. It's Star Trek, it's not Star Wars. You don't have really defined villains that much. Even Q wasn't a villain, he was a pest. So why does? Why? Does this series need a villain? You know, can we? Can we just do Star Trek without villains? Anyway, off of my soapbox, wizkids has announced a new Star Trek tabletop game due out for release later this year.

Speaker 1:

Star Trek Captain's Chair is a new deck-building game that features six different captains from the Star Trek universe, competing in different ways. Each of the captains have different strategies and strengths, and players can choose to lean into diplomacy, exploration and science, in addition to ship combat. The six captains featured in the game include Jean-Luc Picard, benjamin Sisko, michael Burnham, koloth Sela and Tylex Shran so a wide range of captains there. Previews of various cards showcase a variety of characters from across the Star Trek line, with characters from the movies lower decks appearing alongside characters from the live-action TV shows. It's also notable that the game features a mix of different species, including an Andorian, which are usually considered afterthoughts, even though they were a founding Federation member. We'll also note that the game omits several popular captains like James C Kirk, which seemingly hints that there will be room for expansions should the game be a success.

Speaker 1:

Let's go on to the Geek News. The Geek News begins with Zack Snyder, who envisioned his two movies, space opera, rebel Moon as hitting Netflix like a wrecking ball, with the release dates hitting just one month apart. That didn't quite work out, with Netflix hoping instead to draw out the attention they would attract. But now that both movies are out, the so-called Snyder Cut of each movie will drop on the same day in August. According to a new announcement made on Snyder's social media accounts, the director's cut of both parts of Rebel Moon will be available to watch on Netflix on August 2nd, and they will each get a new title as well Chapter 1, originally called A Child of Fire will now go by Chalice of Blood. Chapter 2, previously called the Scargiver, will debut as Curse of Forgiveness. That should help Snyder and Netflix separate the longer, bloodier, x-rated versions from the mainstream ones already released. Maybe someday I'll get to watch those. Probably when Star Trek Prodigy hits Netflix, I'll buy a month so I can watch that. Maybe I'll also watch the Snyder Wars films as well.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, ahead of the premiere of the Boys Season 4, showrun eric kripke has announced the r-rated amazon prime video series superhero series will conclude with the fifth season. Quote hashtag the boys season four premiere week is a good time to announce season five will be the final season, he said on x, formerly twitter, which was accompanied with a screenshot of the redacted copy of the script for this series' fourth finale Quote. Always my plan. I just had to be cagey till I got the final okay from Voight, thrilled to be bringing the story of a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch season four cause the end has begun. Because the end has begun. Debuting in 2019, the Boys takes place in a world run by superhero megacorp Vought and follows the battle between the Supes and the titular Boys, a group of humans whose lives have been ruined in one way or another by the Supes.

Speaker 1:

Warner Bros announced a follow-up film to the 1998 classic Practical Magic, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in talks to return. The first movie starred Bullock and Kidman as the Witchy Owen sisters who get wrapped up in supernatural cover-up after Bullock unintentionally drugs and kills Kidman's abusive ex-boyfriend, forcing them to reanimate his corpse. Directed by Griffin Dunn and adapted from the 1995 novel of the same name by Alex Hoffman. You know I never saw Practical Magic. I used to have a mini poster that I got from the theaters one time, but I never actually sat down to watch it. Maybe I should do that this weekend. Anyway, catch-up Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Ozzy, voice of the Force, an animated feature produced by Appian Way Productions, mike Medavoy and GCI Film, which features a voice led by Amandla Steinberg.

Speaker 1:

Ozzie, an orphan orangutan who uses her influencer skills to save her forest from home and home from deforestation. Intended to raise awareness around the issues of our planet's rainforest due to low growing levels of deforestation and how this affects ecosystems and climate change. The film also features the voices of Dean Charles Chapman, dijamon Hausu, donald Sutherland, laura Dern, rupal Charles and Ursula Carlson. Intended as the first film in a climate-themed franchise to be followed by Ocean, a film now in development. The movie will have a title song penned by honorary Oscar winner Diane Warren and is slated for a wide theatrical rollout later this year.

Speaker 1:

Disney's live-action Moana has found its new leading lady. Catherine Lajia'a will star opposite Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as the demigod Maui in the highly anticipated film. Lajia'a, a 17-year-old from Sydney, australia, said, quote I'm really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites. My grandfather comes from Fa'ala, palau in Savoa, and my grandmother is from Lulumagewe Tui on the main island in Apaloa in Samoa. I'm honored to have the opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island people and to represent young girls who look like me. Unquote. Also joining the cast is Auckland New Zealander John Tuohy, as Moana's father, chief Tuohy, samoan. New Zealand actor, frankie Adams as Moana's mother, sina, and Rina Owen, who hails from the Bay of Islands, new Zealand, as the revered Grandma Tala. The live-action movie was announced last April with the news that Johnson would return to star and produce and my apologies for butchering those South Pacific names.

Speaker 1:

Hunter Schaefer is set to star opposite Michelle Yeoh in the Prime video series Blade Runner 2099. She's the second Euphoria main cast member to book a new series, joining Eric Dane. As Bloodline reports, work on season three of the HBO series continues, targeting a production start later this year. Amid a production delay, hbo in March allowed the cast to take other acting jobs, a season three filming schedule, which now have been tailored around the actor's availability. Details regarding Schaefer's role and the show's pilot are in the reps.

Speaker 1:

Blade Runner 2099 is a Prime Video Limited series following up on the 2017 movie sequel Blade Runner 2049, and Mark Seale's expansion of the sci-fi franchise based on the Philip K Dick's seminal novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, which kicked off with Ridley Scott's classic 1982 film Blade Runner. Denis Villeneuve released a sequel to the film in 2017, starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, which was the most recent title on the big screen. Derek Connolly, the franchise scribe, whose work includes Jurassic World and Detective Pikachu, has a new sandbox in which to play in. Connolly has been tapped to pen the script for Paramount's untitled Transformers GI Joe crossover action project that will star Chris Hemsworth. The crossover feature will bring together two of Hasbro's biggest toy lines Transformers and GI Joe, and will pit the good guys, the robots in disguise, the Autobots and heroic Joes against their arch enemies, the dastardly Decepticons and the terrorist organization Cobra. While a team-up of the two toy lines has happened in comic book form back in 1987, it never occurred on screens, big or small, until now. And finally, terry Metallus, the showrunner who steered the final season of Star Trek Picard to new ratings and critical heights, has been tapped to write an update of the 1985 cult sci-fi movie Enemy Mine for 20th Century Studios.

Speaker 1:

Set in the future, where mankind is warring with a reptilian alien species Minds starred Dennis Quaid as a human pilot and Louis Gossett Jr as an alien who crash-land on a desolate planet. Both have deep-seated hatred for one another but are forced to overcome their prejudices to survive. Things are taken up a notch when the human pilot must take care of the alien's baby, when the reptilian is no longer able. Unquote. And actually finally tonight sorry, regular show and close enough creator JG Quintel has a new animated series in the works with Adult Swim Super Mutant Magic Academy.

Speaker 1:

Adult Swim Super Mutant Magic Academy Adult Swim took the stage over at the NSC International Animation Film Festival to showcase the project. Now the new series is quote created by Emmy winner JG Quintel and Jillian Tamaki. This surreal comedy is set at a high school where the student body is a mix of mutants and regular kids. Through the eyes of Marsha, a sardinian transfer student with a mysterious past, the series follows the awkward high school struggles and occasional triumphs of a diverse cast of teens as they stumble through romance, friendships and growing mutant powers. Based on the comic series Super Mutant, magic Academy. That's something to look at. Magic Academy that's something to look at. But that brings us to the end of the show.
