Speaker 1:

Welcome to High Low Brow, the show with highbrow takes on lowbrow culture. I'm your one host, Amanda Scriber.

Speaker 2:

And I'm your immaterial boys, immaterial girls, River Gilbert.

Speaker 1:

Ooh, that sounded very Pride-like.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, it's a trans anthem.

Speaker 1:

Is it? I've never heard of it, Emma.

Speaker 2:

Immaterial by Sophie. Oh, you are like the least good trans ally. You don't even know the trans national anthem.

Speaker 1:

Well, I know who sophie is, and anyways, rip, rip. Yeah, I know who sophie is, I just I would hope so sorry, I I just was like I like.

Speaker 2:

Anyways, it's late it's late, it is late and i't.

Speaker 1:

I don't get all your references all the time.

Speaker 2:

Sometimes they're just like sometimes you talk words and I don't know what the fuck you mean.

Speaker 1:

Basically yeah. So I'm just like okay, yeah, sure, yeah sure that sounds.

Speaker 2:

that sounds gay. I'm into it Also. I did perpetually in a hyperpop era.

Speaker 1:

That's not true. I mean you were very much in a emo like I'm only exclusively listening to.

Speaker 2:

West emo.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so like you can understand my game, yeah.

Speaker 2:

I understand, but you know, ever since I found out about 100 gecks, I've been getting into hyperpop.

Speaker 1:

Okay, well, sure, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

God.

Speaker 1:

I'm not saying you can't like things, I'm just saying.

Speaker 2:

It sounds like you're saying I can't like things.

Speaker 1:

No, you can like whatever you want.

Speaker 2:

Hey, emma, yeah, what's making?

Speaker 1:

your brain go bird. This week Nothing, Literally nothing. I've just been working so.

Speaker 2:

But the hell week is over.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it is ending, yeah, it is done.

Speaker 2:

It is done.

Speaker 1:

So, but, yes, I know you're like oh, that's sad, but it's fine.

Speaker 2:

I'm like Emma, wow, your brain didn't go bird this week.

Speaker 1:

That's so sad. I mean my brain was dissociating and just trying to get by trying to get by.

Speaker 2:

That's fair. We all have those weeks.

Speaker 1:

We do have those weeks I think sometimes it's normal to just be like the brain going burr is literally brain just trying to, yeah, trying to continue to, trying to continue to brain didn't go burr, but brain got through week yeah what's making my brain go burr is the Sophie, but also the kale peanut crunch salad that we've been making for lunches, oh yes it is a very good salad.

Speaker 2:

It's such a good salad. Link in the show notes. We will link Everybody's, like sure. No, it's legitimately like it's my hyper fixation food this week.

Speaker 1:

Everybody needs to have one of those A hundred percent.

Speaker 2:

Move over Dino Nuggies.

Speaker 1:

Actually, if you're going to talk about the salad, I went and bought us a not cheap bird feeder oh yeah, you bought like a quarter of a month's rent bird feeder and that has like a camera inside and is powered by AI and has a solar panel it identifies yeah the, the birds that visit the feeder. Yeah, and we set it up yesterday.

Speaker 2:

It's called.

Speaker 1:

Birdify. We'll link to it in the show notes if you're interested in going to get one for yourself. River is big into birds.

Speaker 2:

I like birds, they're like dinosaurs.

Speaker 1:

But now, yeah, and you know I also enjoy birds.

Speaker 2:

I'm not who doesn't enjoy birds yeah.

Speaker 1:

Birds are pretty, birds are pretty cool, so we set it up.

Speaker 2:

But like no one has, no birds have come to visit our we had to Google it and apparently it is normal for it to take days, if not weeks, for birds to find your feeder. Yeah, we've had birds in the backyard, so I think they are being like hmm, I wonder, and we're we're away this weekend so, so we're hoping fingers crossed and and they were kind of like poking about.

Speaker 1:

But we had ocean, our dog out in the ocean and birds. Just they don't, they don't get along yeah, ocean.

Speaker 2:

I can't tell if she thinks they're friend-shaped or food-shaped.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

They're one of the two.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

What are we talking about this week?

Speaker 1:

We are talking about the finale of the Valley.

Speaker 2:

The Valley finale.

Speaker 1:

Because it finally happened. And we're also talking about the first episode of Love Island USA. Yeah, because Ariana is now the host. Uh-huh, uh-huh, and we're also talking about the first episode of Love Island USA. Yeah, because Ariana is now the host. Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.

Speaker 2:

Let's start with the valley. Yeah, Because that happened farther in the past and my memory is fading. Yeah, Okay, so the valley finished. Yeah, the valley finished. We kind of knew what was going to happen in the finale.

Speaker 1:

Well of course we knew what was going to happen in the finale. Well, of course we knew what was going to happen in the finale because they announced all of it at the beginning of the season. So I mean, we knew we were building up to all of this. But also to that point a lot of us thought that these things were done as sort of like a pr for the show that's kind of I was wondering.

Speaker 2:

I was like I wonder if it would have made a difference if they didn't talk about like the breakups or if they, because, like honestly, I would have rather have just been shocked and appalled yeah, well, to be fair, j Jesse and Michelle them announcing. They hate each other yeah.

Speaker 1:

They like, they hate each other. They hate each other this entire season. Yeah, so like the announcing that they were getting divorced at the beginning of the season and then watching it, I'm like, whatever, this is not a surprise, but Jackson Brittany, I think, was more of a surprise well, especially, I mean, yeah, the jesse thing was like I'm gonna go do ayahuasca for us and it was like this is the worst man in existence and she's totally republican not even she's totally a republican.

Speaker 2:

The fact that she is sure you didn't let me finish, sorry, continue yeah.

Speaker 1:

The fact of the matter is is that he said what would you like me to get of this? And she basically says to him I want you to change period.

Speaker 2:

I want you to change your personality. Yeah, and it's like oh, you don't like me yeah.

Speaker 1:

It's like oh honey, that doesn't happen on mushrooms.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

You guys just should not be together.

Speaker 2:

She was like I had ego death and that lasted all of four days, yeah. And then he was like, oh no, my ego was just resting.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think the only couple that out of the entire series that I ended up liking was Nia and Danny.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think so too, Like I mean and you tell me if this is where you were going.

Speaker 1:

Danny did some problematic things in the last two episodes.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he reminds he's an actor. He is like yeah, yeah, all of the actors that I've ever met are a danny, like that's just kind of like the cookie cutter, like problematic white guy yeah, I mean, I think what I appreciated about the two of them was that they actually seem to communicate to one another and like they were both like, like she kept saying like I got some baby blues and like he's like, she's like I think it's more than that and he's like I'm not good right now, the bar is so low the bar is so low

Speaker 1:

and so the fact that, like, even he was moderately problematic. But, like you know, when we look at jesse, when we look at a jacks when we look at the rep like it's fine he was fine like was he great no, but was he better than Jax? Yeah, we gotta talk about Jax and Brittany yeah, jax and Brittany, I not to like armchair diagnose, but I'm pretty sure that Cruz, their son, definitely has autism it wouldn't be surprising, I think, like, but I'm pretty sure that Cruz, their son, definitely has autism.

Speaker 2:

It wouldn't be surprising, I think, like Brittany is like, technically, a geriatric pregnancy when she had Cruz right?

Speaker 1:

I'm not sure, Because she was like in her mid-30s.

Speaker 2:

And that carries as somebody who was born to somebody in their mid to late 30s who also has autism. Yeah, that's just a thing that can happen.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, for sure. But one of the things that I sort of took away from, like, jax has always been this way and if you have watched Vanderpump Rules you have sort of seen the evolution of their relationship. What I think has changed or at least my sort of takeaway, and you can tell me if you agree or disagree is that Brittany's a mom now. Brittany feels like she has to protect Cruz, like she has to protect Cruz. And let's say, if there is something wrong with Cruz, again we can't armchair diagnose.

Speaker 1:

We don't know, we don't know, we know that there is something wrong.

Speaker 2:

We know that he's seeing like a therapist yeah, a speech, therapist.

Speaker 1:

He has people that are working with him. Brittany probably has, and she talks a bit about this in the last episode. But you know she doesn't want that for her kid anymore. She doesn't want that for her anymore. And I think that sort of there comes a point where maybe that was good at one point in your life, but that isn't good for you anymore, or even if not good, acceptable.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, like it was she, I remember in the penultimate episode they're like well, I know that divorce isn't in your vocabulary, and she was like oh it's in our vocabulary and I was like, oh, that that's exactly what happened. It wasn't in their vocabulary. But then Brittany became a mom and was like oh no, I'll do whatever I need to, and Jax being Jax was like no, everything's exactly the same as it always was, except I own a bar now and you're a father, yeah, with a bar.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly, I think for Jax it's never really changed, like he's.

Speaker 2:

He's got Peter Pan syndrome. He's never going to grow up. He's like in his. He's in his like 40s right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, he's a bit older than you. Him and Schwartz and Sandoval should just all move into a house together.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, start a compound. They can do their own cult-like activities.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, why not?

Speaker 2:

I mean it is LA so.

Speaker 1:

I think the thing that I found really interesting about the finale and I'm pissed off that we're not getting a reunion, know, but you know, we we see the dissolvement of jacks and britney, we see the dissolvement of jesse and michelle, we see sort of like the group as a whole because, like we see Jax open up the restaurant bar, the fast cash Literally it's just a room and another bar.

Speaker 2:

Anyways, whatever.

Speaker 1:

It's not that big of a deal, but anyways opens it up and we see sort of like the group is in a really bad place where none of them are getting along Like I don't know if you've been keeping up with all of these other places, but Janet has sort of been saying that Zach, like told her that she should have a miscarriage.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I did, I did over. I did see that on the subreddits.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I'm just like wow, all these people like genuinely hate each other there were I think it was a tech talk that I saw and they were saying like the Valley is what happens when people get everything they ever wanted. Like because they the only people who seem to be even remotely happier the people without kids. They're like, but that's because they're aspiring to have kids, but they all are married, they own a house, they're successful in their're aspiring to have kids, but they all are married, they own a house, they're successful in their careers, they have children. And then it's like I don't know what to do.

Speaker 1:

I don't want anything anymore, so they just yeah, and I think too, like Janet, I know, like, and this was my other beef with the season is that.

Speaker 1:

Janet was cut a lot of slack because she was pregnant and we yeah, she was milking that like lala yeah, I'm a mom, I'm in my soft era I'm pregnant, yeah, and it's like cool, like, yeah, sure we do need to like cut you some slack and be to you, but also she operated in such a way where, like she was kind of a bitch she was the villain of the season yeah, like it was her and jacks.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, and jesse and they were all the villain of this. Do you know? I was shocked about being so chill with zach kristin doughty oh yeah, I mean, I think we talked about this in our last episode about the valley we were saying all of them were gaslighting kristin yeah, and it felt like she sort of like faded into the background because she like had had enough yeah.

Speaker 1:

I also think that a bunch of them were like we're not gonna film with her, yeah, and I think that's bunch of them were like we're not going to film with her? Yeah, and I think that's just like mean girl bullshit yeah.

Speaker 2:

I do too, but yeah, so I think we'll watch the second season.

Speaker 1:

I think there is some interesting groundwork that they've laid. Apparently, in the second season it's going to be the entire cast.

Speaker 2:

Which is wild. Coming back Because I heard a rumor that lala's joining the valley and is going to end up married to jesse.

Speaker 1:

as the villains no, so no, that's not true. This is not at all true. Jesse's dating someone is it? It Lala no it's not so I don't know what. What tainted?

Speaker 2:

I need to check my sources.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't know what tainted information you're getting. But even like the producers, because I think the producer, the current production team that was on the Valley this year, will not be coming back next year. I think Jeremiah's moving over to the Valley not be coming back next year.

Speaker 2:

I think Jeremiah's moving over to the Valley.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so I think that's like they're bringing over some people who have worked on like Vanderpump, rules and Beverly Hills and that type of thing, so that they can sort of like amp up.

Speaker 2:

Bravo-fy it yeah.

Speaker 1:

Bravo-fy it if you will, and then they'll actually have a reunion.

Speaker 2:

I swear to God they need a reunion.

Speaker 1:

Yeah to God, they need a reunion, yeah, so, anyways, I think that next year we will see more sort of like well, there was a lot of drama this year, but we will see more sort of like continuity. We will see more sort of like. We will see more sort of story beefiness, but also it's been confirmed that like lala and sheena are not come thank god, they will not be on the valley.

Speaker 1:

They said they just want to give them a second season with the current cast and sort of see where that goes I I have no patience for lala anymore yeah, I think most people do not.

Speaker 2:

I'm glad, I'm glad that people have finally joined the river train, because I've always been like there's something about her. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1:

Did you hear or did you see? Lala did an Amazon Live where she said she didn't even know that something about her was open. Where she said she didn't even know that something about her was open. And then katie like posted it on her instagram stories and was like your personal assistant saw our instagram, that the story, she like liked it or something of this nature, and so I I'm just like Lala, just stop.

Speaker 2:

Like you're clearly a producer plant. Like don't worry, Just go find another rich guy to fuck, it's fine.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's whatever, it's fine. Anyways, speaking of Vanderpump Rules, Uh-huh. We need to talk about.

Speaker 2:

The first episode of Love Island.

Speaker 1:

We need to talk about the first episode of Love Island. We need to talk about the first episode of love island. So you have never watched love island I have never, so I got.

Speaker 2:

When I found out about it. I got love island and temptation island mixed up. I was like wait she's replacing mark l walberg.

Speaker 1:

No different shows, very different show, yeah yeah, and I watched all of Love Island. I've watched a few seasons of Love Island. I know that Ariana has actually, like she has, a close relationship with the show. First of all, she's been a big fan of the show for a while and two, deb Chubb, who was on the show for a while, and two, deb chubb, who was on the show, is actually one of her friends, oh my god, yeah. So like this just seems like a very natural fit for her. That makes sense. So like very happy that she is the host watching the first episode, if you're gonna, if you haven't watched the first episode and you you haven't watched the first episode and you're planning to watch the first episode.

Speaker 2:

It's an hour and a half.

Speaker 1:

It's a little no.

Speaker 2:

It's like an hour and a forty yeah an hour and a forty. You could watch half of Exuma or the first episode of.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's long, it's a slog, yeah, like. They could have cut that into two episodes well, there's already a second episode, I know, and we didn't watch that we haven't seen that yet, because we were like, oh my god, that's so much content yeah it's a lot of content, the and I think for people who have watched a love island and I was, explaining to you like, if I'm not mistaken, love island, it comes. Is it every day or every few days?

Speaker 2:

It says new episodes plural weekly.

Speaker 1:

So I think it's probably twice per week. Yeah, it's a few times per week.

Speaker 2:

So not quite the same frequency as Big Brother but like still quite.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's, it's updated.

Speaker 2:

You got to keep on top of it or your queue is going to be.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, or you're behind. So I remember when I was watching the last season, because one of the guys on this season is Rob.

Speaker 2:

Rob yeah.

Speaker 1:

And he was part of the casa that came in on last season.

Speaker 2:

Rob is the snake wrangler. Yeah, okay, yeah, with the snake tattoo.

Speaker 1:

With the the snake tattoo, and who was doing magic mic dancing in this?

Speaker 2:

like god.

Speaker 1:

Anyways, where should we start with this episode?

Speaker 2:

okay, so I, I, I have questions because I, I think I pick it up on the game. So it's whoever is the final couple gets the hundred thousand dollar prize?

Speaker 1:

yes, and I guess people get eliminated when they're not paired up yeah, so basically how it works is so you know how they're paired up together, right? Now as like couples, yeah, so they can either stay together and they're like yeah, I really love this pairing, or the like there could be a hot new bombshell that enters the villa like there is that enter live and your couple, like the person you're coupled up with can either leave you and pair up with that person, which then leaves you single, and then like so it's like coupled with ruffle, with cash incentive, correct?

Speaker 2:

okay, I got you, I got you yeah yeah, and also.

Speaker 1:

So there will be times where it's like, let's say, your person leaves you to go with this, like this person that came in and then they realize, oh, I don't, I, I actually had a stronger connection with you.

Speaker 1:

You can go back and then like there's so so it gets messy, it does get, it does get messy, and then, like I mentioned, there's that like midway through the season they usually do a whole like a competition between the boys and the, the boys and the girls, not to be gendered about it it is such a gendered show though we need to talk about that too, but continue and whoever wins gets to go to this like house where there's a whole other group of the mojo dojo yeah and there's people there to sort of tempt you to cheat.

Speaker 2:

I see. So there's the Temptation Island.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, okay, and either you will cheat or you won't.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

It's like it's sort of that sort of happens really later in the game. Yeah, and To kind of like, once you have a connection to these people and these couples, yeah, okay, and so by that point, some people like the couple I think that one last year whose name I'm totally blanking on like they stayed together, almost like the whole. Thing yeah, almost the entire thing, week in, week out, and he went and he didn't like he didn't. Aw, yeah, that's the game.

Speaker 2:

It's very straight.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean I think they've have they tried to do like a queer Love Island?

Speaker 2:

I mean, Couple of Thropple was pretty queer yeah. Then there was that lesbian ultimatum. Yes, I think that's coming back too, which I'm excited about, but like I feel like usually there is some bi representation on these types of shows, yeah, I think there was some bi representation on last season too. Okay, yeah, some bi representation on last season too. Okay, yeah, because like everyone, at least all the women in this were like oh, I love this kind of man.

Speaker 2:

This is my type and it's so just like heteronormative and so like we're only on episode one I know, but it was already just like oh my god, this is a lot.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 2:

Not in June.

Speaker 1:

Not during Pride Month. Come on, okay, but we I guess Ariana's bi. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Can we?

Speaker 1:

talk about Ariana.

Speaker 2:

And how good she looks.

Speaker 1:

I know we have like. As soon as I saw that gold outfit, I was just like oh my god, sheena is probably somewhere quaking.

Speaker 2:

She's just like, oh no, she's actually good as gold. I'm, I'm just so I know that Tom's filming.

Speaker 1:

Traitors, traitors, right now, which like why?

Speaker 2:

I can't wait for him to see if he hasn't already the screenshots and how she looks. And it is the ultimate bag fumble.

Speaker 1:

Honestly.

Speaker 2:

I also hate that he's on Traitors.

Speaker 1:

I know I can't. I cannot wait, because the women from Bravo who are in the Traders house are just going to tear him a new one.

Speaker 2:

Oh my god.

Speaker 1:

Which I'm very excited about. However, I don't want him on our screen.

Speaker 2:

He's already been on our screen way too much.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'm so done with it. Also, like he's away filming the Traders and all the shit has been happening with like Billy Lee.

Speaker 2:

Victoria like.

Speaker 1:

I have nothing to add to this, except for if you hate Tom Sandoval and you love gossip get yourself caught up on this like I.

Speaker 2:

She just weighed in on it, did she? Yeah, she called Billy Lee a liar. She was like I don't really haven't really kept up with this. I'm not really in touch with Tom and it's like what You're not in touch with your best friend, tom Sandoval.

Speaker 1:

I know, and the person that you literally like got rid of your best friend. Ariana for.

Speaker 2:

But she, she was like I don't know Billy Lee's like a notorious liar, so Well, on the last.

Speaker 1:

So, Billy Lee, we were supposed to be talking about Love Island.

Speaker 2:

But we have to talk about this podcast.

Speaker 1:

We have to talk about this, okay. So on Billy Lee's latest podcast.

Speaker 2:

Billy Lee and the Kid, which we will link to in the show notes or YouTube whatever.

Speaker 1:

I think it's a podcast, but it's also on YouTube.

Speaker 2:

Billy Lee has Ty on and we saw Ty in like this season it was Ty who was seeing Tom Sandoval and like Ariana was like ooh, I'm sorry, yeah, yeah, she was like.

Speaker 1:

You should probably rethink that.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Like how old are you?

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, no, that tracks yeah.

Speaker 1:

So Ty was on and was like. They both shared all of their screenshots of like things that happened. So it basically refutes all the things that Kyle and Victoria were saying. So, like, every like people, all the like blogs and Instagrammers that I follow are kind of like, are like, are very, very conflicted about this on one hand. They're like this entire thing has gone way too messy, yeah, and very gross, because some of the things that are being shared in these screenshots is like it's just way too personal, very personal, yeah, and like should not be shared.

Speaker 1:

But, on the other hand, like I understand why billy and ty are sharing them. They're sharing them because they're tired of being called liars yeah, they have.

Speaker 2:

Their names have been dragged through the mud.

Speaker 1:

At this point it's like guys no yeah, so like this entire thing is messy as hell, but I think if there's one thing that we can take away from this entire situation is that Tom Sandoval is at the center of it.

Speaker 2:

I was just about to say that it's like Tom Sandoval is the common denominator of dragging people down, because as soon as him and Ariana split up and like, obviously, yes, it was like one of the highest profile scandals in reality television history. Yeah, but Ariana's career is like gang busters right now totally like she's great she fourth place dancing with the stars, hosting a reality television show? Yeah, has a sandwich shop. Yeah, like she's doing, fine she's doing fine she's doing great.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, back to Love Island for a second Love Island. So you know, there's so many different men on the island.

Speaker 2:

There are a lot of men on the island.

Speaker 1:

However, there is one man on the island who is apparently.

Speaker 2:

Oh, my God, his name is Cordell. As soon as I saw him I'm like I'm not bi.

Speaker 1:

but this man is the younger brother of Odell Beckham Jr.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

It was funny because he said his last name. He was like, oh, beckham, and I was like wait wait, wait, wait, wait wait. And then he said my brother is Odelba.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, famer yeah.

Speaker 1:

And if I, if I don't, if I remember correctly, quincy Brown is married to Ashley Simpson, don't? If I remember correctly, quincy brown is married to ashley simpson. I could be, oh, I could be wrong, but yes, that's when I saw cordell come out. That's who I thought he looked like was quincy brown I just loved the green suit that he was wearing it was incredible and he's funny.

Speaker 2:

I really hope he doesn't turn into a fuck boy, because I I genuinely. He's my favorite so far yeah, he is my favorite.
