Speaker 2:

I, I, I I.

Speaker 4:

Over the past five years, a lot of things have changed in my life.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

I became a father in 2019, a pastor in 2022.

Speaker 2:

Fui. Me hice padre en 2019 y un pastor en 2021.

Speaker 4:

During all of this transition I also accepted, like Brother Robinette mentioned, the role as director of campus ministry international.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

I wish I could say the last five years have gone just seamlessly, without any bumps in the road. But I can't say that.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

I wish I could say there wasn't any discomfort or stretching for my family, but many of you know transition is often a painful process.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

One of the things that I did not anticipate having to be intentional about was my motives.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

As my life has moved forward and doors have opened, I have had to resist more than ever in pure motives.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

And one of the things that I've learned through this experience is that the most dangerous thing to my ministry isn't failure, but rather it's success.

Speaker 2:

What was the last part? You said Success.

Speaker 4:

Some of the most dangerous things are success, lo más peligroso es el éxito, y no necesariamente fallar. Let me explain what I mean by reading a portion of scripture. I'm going to read out of the book of James, chapter 4, verses 6 through 8.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

It says this, but he gives us more grace. That is why it says God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your heart, your hands, your centers, and purify your hearts. You double-minded.

Speaker 2:

Purificar vuestros corazones.

Speaker 4:

One thing I want to emphasize today is that double-mindedness isn't always outright doubting God.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

So what's more dangerous than doubting the Lord?

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

What's more dangerous than losing confidence in God?

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

The answer is having confidence in myself.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

Having faith in my own abilities.

Speaker 2:

Y tenerte en mi propias habilidades.

Speaker 4:

Having impure drive and motives.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

If the heights of your ministry are not paired with a dive in the depths of your heart and character, you're heading for a great fall.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

So the last few years for me have, yes, they've been filled with some triumph, but they've also been filled with a lot of self-reflection.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

And for me, self-reflection always leads to repentance.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

And I believe that when that stops being the case, I've lost my way.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

So I'm going to be transparent with you all again. I feel as though that's a mark of my ministry and I try to avoid it, but the Lord doesn't let me.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

One of the areas that the Lord has pointed out in my life as problematic is my motives.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

The things that push me, the things that drive me forward.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

I've always been an incredibly driven person. I've always had a need inside of me to achieve.

Speaker 2:

Yo siempre he sido una persona que siempre quiere caminar adelante, siempre he querido avanzar.

Speaker 4:

I've always been very driven to accomplish things and for most of my life I've viewed this as a positive thing.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

And certainly there are aspects of this that have served me well in the kingdom, but the Lord has gently been teaching me. That's not always the case.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

One day, the Lord began to speak to me along these lines.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

And began to show me that unsurrendered drive and ambition are devastating to my spiritual health.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

Unsurrendered drive and ambition will critically pamper my health, my individual health, my ministry health and the health of the organization that I'm a part of.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

And God is merciful. So the manifestation of this devastation will be seen in that order as well.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

He gives us so many opportunities to turn ourselves back towards him.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

But unchecked drive and ambition will affect your private life first, then your ministry and then the church organization that you serve.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 4:

Obviously, I'm not sitting here saying we should all just sit back on the couch and not be motivated, but we have to discern. We have to ask the Lord to search our heart and see if what's inside of it is pure. I don't say this to lift myself up, but if you're around me for a amount of time, you're going to hear me talk about souls. I've always cared deeply for souls. I have always been driven to see people added to the kingdom of God. I've always sought to be passionately engaged in whatever I could do to see people brought into that kingdom, to see people brought out of darkness and into light. I really again please don't take this as self-miss, lifting myself up, but I can't remember a time being saved where I didn't have something inside of me that saw the plight of souls. This has been the case for so long that I've never really stopped to ask myself why, and I made the mistake many times, assuming that the fruit that I was seeking the fruit of lost souls being added to the kingdom that I was seeking was more important than the root.

Speaker 4:

Scripture tells a different story. However, the things that drive me, the motives that are inside of my heart, are incredibly important. Proverbs 16, verse 2, says this All a man's ways are pure in his own eyes, but his motives are weighed out by the Lord. So what this is saying essentially is what the Lord was teaching me that it's possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason. So the measure effectiveness in the kingdom of God you've got to measure what you're doing by the scales of heaven. And the scales of heaven don't weigh all you have done, but rather they weigh the motive behind your actions. In heaven, the why has greater weight than the what. The why determines the what I've heard it said like this motives make the man and the rest is just what follows. Proverbs 23, verse 7, says and here's the thing wrong motives flourish in prideful hearts. Pride cares more for what man thinks about you than what God thinks about you, and it's possible to do kingdom work for the applause of man. See, as you progress in the kingdom of God, this is what I'm learning is that the flaws in your heart and your character and your motives become amplified when more of the Holy Ghost flows through you. Over time, the leaks in your vessel will be strained in greater fashion. Listen, don't mistake me. We need to be driven. We need to be passionate, we need to be unrelenting in our pursuit for kingdom, business and souls. We need to be driven, but we cannot be driven by impure motives. So, like I said, I'm being very humble with you all today and I want to share a story with you.

Speaker 4:

Over the last few years, god has been revealing to me the impure whys of my life. So an example of this was something I was doing in the last year and a half. I was experiencing some frustration in my life. About a year and a half ago, things weren't going my way and there were what seemed like more roadblocks than open doors. I was frustrated with things in my personal life. I was frustrated with the progress my church was making Bottom line. My life felt out of control.

Speaker 4:

And in the midst of all of that, I had a great idea. I grabbed some flyers and I went out to do some evangelism. I started handing out tracks and I started doing some outreach, in the middle of that frustration, and God spoke to me right then and there and asked me why I was doing what I was doing, and I'm sure none of you have done this, but I gave him the answer that I thought was correct. Well, god, of course I'm doing this to reach my city. I'm doing this to reach souls why are you asking me this? And God spoke to me in that moment and showed me I wasn't doing it for them, I was doing it for myself. Things felt frustrating, things felt outside of my ability to control, so I decided I was going to go evangelize and blow off some steam, release some frustration. I didn't even realize I was doing with that motive until the Lord began to speak to me. I was trying to fix something in my life that felt broken, but by doing something that made me feel like I had worth.

Speaker 2:

I was trying to do something that was broken in me and trying to compensate that by fixing it and going to evangelize.

Speaker 4:

Galatians, chapter 3, verse 3, says this in the King James Bible Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh?

Speaker 2:

Has it been you who are now making perfect by the flesh?

Speaker 4:

This is the principle that the Lord taught me that day. It doesn't matter if you're doing the right thing, if you're doing it for the wrong reason. You're in the flesh. I'm sorry if this is a little too transparent in making some people uncomfortable today. I believe we need this type of teaching in the Apostolic Church. We can't be afraid to look in the mirror and have flaws pointed out to us. If there's a motive inside of me that's hampering my effectiveness in the kingdom, I want the Lord to show me. Because I want to be effective in the kingdom. I want to do things out of the ability of Christ and not my flesh. I want to do things in a motive that comes from a pure heart, with drive that comes from the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3, verse 6, says this Whoever also has made us able ministers of the New Testament, not of the letter but of the Spirit, for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life. I read this scripture today because it illustrates my next point.

Speaker 4:

If I'm doing the work of ministry if I'm doing the kingdom work of souls and I'm doing it for myself, if I'm doing it with that motive, then I'm doing it in my own strength. Why do so many people burn out in ministry? Why do we see so many ministers throw in the towel? Why does drive and motivation to see revival in a move of God wax cold and thumb? I believe, more times than we realize, we lose our passion, not because we're aiming at the wrong target, but because we're aiming for the wrong reasons. What motivates us? What drives us? So don't ask yourself where you're aiming today. Ask yourself why you're aiming there. To receive your motives. We ought to ask ourselves what are the Lord's motives? What drives our Lord in pursuit of us as people? What prompts the Lord to minister to the masses and to reach for lost people?

Speaker 4:

John, chapter 3, verse 16, for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son and whosoever believeth on him, who should perish, should not perish but have everlasting life.

Speaker 4:

I'm sorry, sister. God is love. That's his why, that's his motive. God's love is self-sacrificing. It doesn't ask for anything in return. Love is the why, and we have to be motivated and driven by the same thing. However, we have to be careful not to operate in human love, but rather we have to tap into the divine agape love of God. The love that comes from God must be our driving force. I'm sure you've heard teaching along these lines before, but I want to define some things right now. As I'm sure you may be aware, agape is the word for the love of God in the Bible. I want to contrast this with human love, which is also a very real thing and something we find in Scripture.

Speaker 2:

And I also want to talk about the human love that we also find in Scripture.

Speaker 4:

Both are present within us but we must be intentional to operate in agape love. We'll naturally operate in the realm of human love. Human love isn't necessarily sinful, it's just human, it's of the flesh. But agape love is of the spirit, it's supernatural. It doesn't expect anything in return, so it doesn't need anything in return. Human love comes with stipulations. This isn't necessarily sinful, but it does expect something in return. And when you don't receive something in return, there's a cost that's associated with it.

Speaker 4:

Agape love seeks only to bless others. Human love, it angles and it seeks to get something back in return. The expectation, whether known or unknown, is that when I love someone with my love, that love should be returned. We use this love like currency in our relationships and exchanges are made all the time. But we can't reach this world with our love.

Speaker 4:

And, as a minister of the gospel, if I'm motivated by human love, I'm operating in the flesh. Human love can knit two human hearts together, but agape love, the love of God, is the only thing that can knit a human and God's heart together. We have to be careful here, because we can mean well, but if we're ministering to people in human love, we're not knitting them to the Lord, we're knitting them to ourselves. Whenever you're loving somebody and expecting to get some worth out of it in return, you're operating in human love. When your personal worth or identity is attached to the love that you're giving, you're operating in human love, and I think this is why we burn out in ministry so often is because we spend human currency when we're supposed to love through the agape love of God.

Speaker 2:

And I think that's why ministers spend a lot of money, because they're operating in human love instead of agape love.

Speaker 4:

I think so many people do this without realizing it and they say why am I not being effective in ministry? I'm loving people? The problem is not with the. What the problem was with the why you can't be motivated with your love and reach this world. It won't work. And here's the real revelation is that true, agape? Love is the root.

Speaker 2:

It's not the fruit.

Speaker 4:

It's the vine, it's not the branch, it's not the motive, it's not the action, it's the motive. See, here's the thing, and I want to really stress this because I feel administered to somebody who feels like they're doing all the right things but they're not getting the results that they think are their product of that. Maybe God is prompting somebody on this call today to check their heart because human love has a limit. There's only so much of it that I can give. It's a finite thing.

Speaker 2:

There's just a little bit more that I can give, because human love is finite, but love is infinite. So if you're in the ministry and you feel desawocado, maybe you're operating in the incorrect motive.

Speaker 4:

Human love demands repayment, but agape love is like a line of credit with no limit. It's daddy's credit card of love and he's given it to me. If we're driven by the love of God, then we'll be effective in ministry. We'll knit souls to God, not to ourselves. We'll cause people to be dependent on the Lord, not co-dependent upon us. You've probably heard this phrase before. You keep people the same way you win them, and you lose people the same way you win them. If people's salvation is dependent on my ability to give them my love, they're going to lose their way. But if I can just be a vessel, a sower that knits somebody's heart to God through the agape love, then they'll be connected to him, and I'm just involved in the process.

Speaker 4:

Listen, hear me. This is too important to get wrong, because the method with which you reach people better. It better be tied to God's love inside of you and not tied to something that you need to fix inside of yourself and don't deceive yourself. Your method is always connected to your motive, knowingly or unknowingly. The method in which you're doing something is always connected to the reason that you do it. We've got to have pure motives. We've got to check our hearts and ask the Lord to search them. Human love is so imperfect. When we begin to count the cost versus benefit ratio, we're operating in the love of man and not the love of God.

Speaker 4:

I'm going to read several portions of scripture here, sister, to illustrate this. It's in Luke, chapter 15, 3 through 4, and then I'm going to jump down to verse 8 in the King James Bible and I'll read the whole thing.

Speaker 4:

And he spoke this parable unto them saying what man of few having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them does not leave the 99 in the wilderness and go after that one which is lost until he finds it? And verse 8 says Either woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece does not light a candle and sweep the house and seek diligently till she finds it.

Speaker 2:

Am I reading the right thing, luke 15, 3, 4?

Speaker 4:

Yep, and then verse 8.

Speaker 2:

And verse 8 says, either woman having ten pieces of silver.

Speaker 4:

These scriptures, these parables. They don't really make sense when you are operating out of human love. When compared with the rest, what is the value of one coin? What's the value of one sheep? It doesn't make sense to expend energy searching for something that's of limited value, unless you are motivated by agape love.

Speaker 2:

But here's the beautiful thing God's power is the power of the human being.

Speaker 4:

But here's the beautiful thing God's love searches beyond our own ability. It searches past the point where our love runs dry and, like I said, we have a limited amount of love that we have in ourselves to give. Our love does not have enough stamina to find that lost sheep. Our love does not have enough strength to persevere, to find lost souls. But if I am connected to the agape love of God and His motive, then I have the ability in Christ to search beyond the point where it makes sense. Is human love or agape love? My drive? Is human love or agape love my motive? Human love stops after a few stones have been turned over and you don't find anything. But the love of God will turn over every stone in pursuit. It will turn a house upside down trying to find a lost coin, a lost soul. If I am operating in God's love, I will turn every stone over in my city searching for lost souls and I will relentlessly search for hurting and broken people and I won't run dry.

Speaker 2:

God's love is a bonfire.

Speaker 4:

Our love is a campfire. You don't have to convince God's love to burn inside of you. You just got to get connected and let that fire burn inside of you as well. God's love can transform the world and if we're conduits of that love, we're a part of that journey. We're a part of that story. So let's be driven today. Let's be passionate today. Let's do whatever is necessary, even if it seems foolish, to reach people in our cities. Let's try any method or plan that we can employ to reach our world. Let's do whatever what comes to our heart, but let's do it for the right reason and with the right why. Until every single door in my city is knocked on, I haven't turned over every stone, but I'm going to do it for the right reason, not to fix a need or a brokenness present within me, not to not operating in human love, but because I'm connected to the vine, because I'm operating in the agape love of God. Thank you all for letting me minister to you today. I'm going to turn this back over to Brother Robinette.

Speaker 1:

Pastor Burmeister, I want you just to pray over every one of us for a moment, if you don't mind, pastor.

Speaker 4:

Absolutely. Oh, heavenly Father, we praise you, we magnify your name, we worship you. We know that we have impure motives, god, at times we know our hearts in themselves are desperately wicked and motivated by the needs that are present within us. God, I pray that you would bring a spirit of repentance to us today. I pray that you would cause us to walk in humility. I pray that we would not operate in human love to fix a need inside of us, but let us be vessels for the agape love of God. Let that motive, let that heart drive us to reach for this world, to reach for the souls that are your children in this world, to see the lives that we're touching change, knit to you and not to us.

Speaker 4:

Jesus, help us to be instruments, help us to be sowers of your word and knit people to you to create direct lines of connection between you and people in our community, people in our world, all because of the agape love of God, in the name of Jesus Christ, we leak it, loose it, I speak it, I declare it over everybody who's listened to this call by the matchless name of Jesus Christ and by the love of God which is set abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost. In the name of Jesus.

Speaker 2:

Amen In Jesus' name. In the name of Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah. In the name of Jesus Christ, we leak it, loose it. I declare it over everybody who's listened to this call. In the name of Jesus Christ, we leak it, loose it. I declare it over everybody who's listened to?

Speaker 2:

I declare it over everybody who's listened to this call. In the name of Jesus Christ, we leak it, loose it. I declare it over everybody who's listened to this call Pios 119, psalm 139, Psalm 139, psalm 139. Verse 23 and 24, bible simply said this search me, oh God, and know my heart.
