As Americans we live life at a grinding clip.  Work, family, church, and other duties keep us constantly busy.

The Smartphone and other devices with their constant reminders and addictive algorithms draw us into a never-ending web of being on, being available, and being in touch for every moment of our lives.

God knows the toil that work and constant activity can take on our lives.  In Deuteronomy 5:12-14 the Lord calls on us to observe the sabbath keeping the day holy and perform no work.

In our struggles with this command and many others, I have found this Biblical formular helpful.

1. Pray For Obedience – Meditate over Psalm 119, which is a request to the Lord not only for help but for understanding to follow His commands and decrees.

2. Establish A Your Sabbath To Honor God – Yes, the Sabbath is excellent for rest and the benefits that come from it.  However, Deuteronomy 5:14 specifically commands that the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.

3. Get People To Hold You Accountable – Paul tells us in Hebrews 10:24 to consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

The Sabbath is God’s plan for rest, rejuvenation, and righteousness.  The question is are we following God’s plan for a Sabbath? If we are not how can we follow God’s plan to obey his command and to have and to enjoy His Sabbath?
