I think it is accurate to say that many people consider our forever First Lady Michelle Obama a rock of a person.

“When They Go Low, We Go High” is the perfect metaphor for the poise, grace, and wisdom Mrs. Obama has shown in and out of the White House.

With Barack Obama winning the presidency in November 2008, life would change for the family.   Mrs. Obama and her two young daughters would not only have to move in the middle of a school year but do it in the public pressure cooker that is the White House.

Mrs. Obama would leave her job as a highly paid hospital executive, to become First Lady an unpaid but important role. She would become the planner in chief for State Dinners and all the social events at the White House.  In her early 40’s, she would need to be a rock not only for her husband and daughters but the nation.

Even a rock needs a rock, with the complexed task ahead of becoming First Lady.  Mrs. Obama turned to her mother, Marian Robinson to move with her to Washington providing stability for the family at  a difficult time.

According to The New York Times, Mrs. Robinson stayed much the same after moving to the White House.  She is reported to having said

“Just show me how to work the washing machine and I’m good.

Marian Lois Shields Robinson, mother of a First Lady who made the transition from living on the South Side of Chicago to the lofty heights of the White House seem effortless has died at age 86.

Proverbs 27:17 tells us “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”  Mrs. Robinson, the rock iron mother sharpened her children.  Both daughter Michelle and son Craig came from humble begins to graduate from Ivey league schools.

Mrs. Robinson’s move to Washington, in January 2009, was said at first to be temporary, to help her daughter and granddaughters adjust. Her hesitation tuned into a commitment as she stayed the entire eight years of the Obama Presidency.  Returning to her Chicago home when it was over.

In her memoir, Becoming, Mrs. Obama wrote “The girls needed her,” I need her, Barack need her.  She ended up being our rock through it all.”

I pray that there is a Proverbs 27:17 rock in your life.  I hope you will take a moment to thank God for them as we thank God for Marian Lois Shields Robinson a rock, who was there when another rock needed her.
