Matthew, a disciple of Jesus and writer of the Gospel that bears his name was not always the saint we think of him now.   He was a notorious tax collector hated by Jews, who considered him a traitor because he worked for the despised Roman empire.

The Romans did not pay Matthew or the other tax collectors an actual wage.  Instead, they were expected to take extra money form the Jews and keep some for themselves.  Which they did using brutal tactics that would make even the Sopranos proud.

Jesus saw Matthew in action sitting at the tax collection station.   The Lord called out saying “Follow Me”, Matthew got up and followed Jesus.

Later Jesus dined with Matthew, many of his tax collector friends and other sinners.  Seeing this the Pharisees who were the religious leaders of the day were up in arms.  They questioned the disciples saying Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Jesus answered saying those who are not sick have no need of a physician. Therefore, he was there with the tax collectors and other sinners to heal them.

God sent Jesus to the earth to provide healing to a sin sick world.  Whatever the illness mental, physical, financial, spiritual, political and everything in between God will put the people, the resources, the effort, the ideas, and the peace that allow you to achieve the wellness that God promised for your abundant life.

What’s more since we all sinners saved by grace Jesus through the Holy Spirit is always with us so that we will not slip back into sin.

So let be like Matthew and answer the call of Jesus.
