The Paris Olympic Games have begun.  During the sixteen days of the games the world’s best athletes will compete for country, glory, and the gold.

Throughout this celebration of sport, the humanity of God’s greatest creation men and women have an opportunity to show what is possible when the commandment of love thy neighbor as thyself is followed.

With so much promise possible the reality is that these games in Paris are conducted in the shadow of misery, and strife, suffering and conflict.

The Geneva Academy, the postgraduate arm of the

prestigious Geneva Law School reports that right now there are more than 110 armed conflicts around the world.

The Academy tells us that some of these conflicts make the headlines, while others do not. Some of them have started recently, while others have lasted for more than 50 years.

In recognition of these conflicts the ancient tradition of an “Olympic Truce” has been revised.
As noble as this tradition is its questionable if the nations of the world can restrain themselves from fighting even for the brief fortnight plus two days of the games.

Ephesians 2:14 tells us that Jesus is our peace.

-Jesus is our peace when our souls are in distress.

-Jesus is our peace when our world is turned upside down.

-Jesus is our peace when nothing goes right, and

-Jesus is our peace when we are overwhelmed when things do go right.

Let us enjoy the competition of the Olympic Games, let us pray that the truce holds, but let us never forget that the only true peace that is possible is possible with Jesus.

Let There Be Peace!
