Located in central Georgia Hancock County, is one of the poorest areas in the state. The pronominally black county is rich in natural resources but lacks the industry to employ its citizens.
Demand for new road construction, housing and other projects has Hancock’s rock quarries as perhaps the only industry in the county that is in a growth mode.
The Sandersville Railroad a private company is planning to build several miles of new tracks connecting Hancock’s two existing rock quarries laying the groundwork for future expansion.
The proposed train will run through the Shoals Road community directly in the backyards of residents who own modest plots there but not the land that the Sandersville Railroad Company has acquired over the years in anticipation of this project.
Mark Smith is a farmer, retired teacher, and army veteran whose family owns 600 acres that the railroad would like to have. However, he is not selling, with his wife and others in the community they are fighting to keep the railroad out.
Today Mark Smith joins The Podcast to talk about his fight.
