Speaker 1:

Good evening and welcome to this week's edition of Africa in Focus. Myself Kwame, guinean broadcaster, writer, podcaster and entrepreneur. And in this week's edition of Africa in Focus, we'll take a look at tourism in the African world, and this week we're looking at Jamaica and also going to throw in a bonus, going to throw in the great city of Luanda in Angola. Alright, so that's the theme for this week's African podcast Tourism around the African world, featuring Jamaica and Luanda in Angola. So before we get into the podcast, just to make you aware that if you like what you hear, please share to your friends, your family, social media networks. Click on the follow button and you'll be notified every time I upload a new podcast. Okay, let's get into the podcast looking at tourism in the African world, namely Jamaica, and we're going to film in Rwanda as well.

Speaker 1:

Now, as I said, last week, we looked at Abidjan and La Côte d'Ivoire. This time of year, particularly in the European countries, many people are looking forward to booking their summer holidays, and you know people like to go to America or Canada. Some go to Spain, portugal. They go to Spain, portugal, they go to you know, goa, you know parts of Asia, they go to even Brazil, mexico. But they will never think of going on their summer holidays to an African country because of all the negative Western media narrative that is often portrayed of the African continent. So we want to disperse that narrative by encouraging you to look at African countries as a viable destination for your holidays. And this is why, in last week's podcast, we featured the great city of Abidjan, cosmopolitan city with great culinary delights and also a lot to see and do. And so you know we want to continue that thread by encouraging you to go to an African country around the world on your summer vacation.

Speaker 1:

And this week we're featuring two countries, or two countries. We're featuring Jamaica and then also a bit about Luanda, the great, stunning city of Angola. But first Jamaica. You know Jamaica gets a lot of negative press from the western standing city of Angola. But first, jamaica.

Speaker 1:

You know Jamaica gets a lot of negative press from the Western media and you know Jamaica is like you know these gangs, jamaica and that you know everyone is a wee smoker in Jamaica and you know there's a lot of trouble and violence in Jamaica Apparently. You know 2,000 people apparently were killed in Jamaica last year. You know 2,000 people apparently were killed in Jamaica last year, so making Jamaica one of the, you know, crime capitals of the world. However, you know, this image that the Western media have given of Jamaica, you know, is far, far, far different from the reality that is actually in Jamaica. Do you know that last year, more than 3.5 million Americans I'm not talking about other countries, this is Americans over 3.5 million Americans visited Jamaica last year and there was only five incidents of theft or gun crime. Now you do the math. So this should dispel the myth that Jamaica is embodied in gang warfare and that it's not a safe place Blah, blah, blah. To the contrary, jamaica is a very, very safe country and is also a beautiful country, particularly its capital city, kingston.

Speaker 1:

Kingston is a very, very clean, beautiful city, you know, with the waterfront and a lot to do and see in Kingston. Believe it or not, you know there's a suburb of Kingston called Beverly Hills where some of the rich and powerful and upper class Jamaicans live. Yep, you don't see that on, you know, in the Western media, do you? And so you know. I won't say anything more about Jamaica or Kingston, but I will leave you three videos, yeah, which are contrasting, of their view of Jamaica in terms of how beautiful Jamaica is, how, you know, particularly stunning Kingston is, and also where there's a lot to see and do in Jamaica. Yeah, so I'm going to leave you a lot of a few videos where you can see for yourself the beauty of Jamaica, of Kingston, and that is country to the western narrative that we often get of Jamaica, you know, being a crime-ridden, gun-toting, gang-banging society.

Speaker 1:

All right, so we're also going to look at Luanda, in Angola. Luanda is the capital city of Angola, a main commercial city as well. Luanda is a very, very stunning, stunning city. If you thought Abidjan from last week was good because many of you didn't think Africa is worth it, it's like Abidjan you ain't seen nothing yet to go to Luanda. Luanda is a stunning city. I think it's even better than Abidjan, with modern infrastructure, vibrant nightlife, you know, you know culinary. There is a lot to see and do in Lawanda, with the collective mix of colonial and modern day architecture. Definitely, lawanda has to be in your book list to go to as African country this summer. So don't wait till next summer. Go to Lawanda this summer to see for yourself the splendour of, and the magnificence of, that great African city called Luanda, capital of Angola. So again, I'm going to leave you a video which basically sums up the beauty and marvel of this great African city called Luanda, where you can see for yourself the beauty and marvel of this great African city called Luanda, where you can see for yourself the beauty that Luanda has to offer. All right, so I will let the video do the talking.

Speaker 1:
