How Childhood Trauma Affects Us as Adults
Oct 05, 2022 Season 1 Episode 11
Nurzhan Sterbenz

When I came to the U.S., I became a wife and a mom. And I was really struggling. I didn't know why though. I have noticed that many foreign born moms are traumatized one way or another, but they don't even know it. I didn't know that I was traumatized. I grew up thinking that so many things were normal, but they were actually very toxic.

Through my healing process I discovered that I had experienced trauma, and it was showing up in my life. Trauma can manifest itself and can affect our bodies, our behaviors, our relationships and our marriages.

Growing up, I never had any conversation about trauma, what it was and how it affects your body. This topic was nonexistent. Trauma is discussed more in the US and more info is available than in Kyrgyzstan, but it is not normalized.  Most people think of trauma as something big like a car accident, sexual abuse, genocide or war, or a natural disaster. But trauma can be acquired through physical or verbal abuse, or bullying, parental neglect, or discrimination.

In this episode, I share some of my own personal experiences with trauma and I share what I have been learning about trauma. It is important for us to learn about our traumas and to be able to address it in order to heal and move forward.

Books mentioned:

“The Body Keeps the Score” By Bessel Van der Kolk

“When Body Says No More” by Gabor Mate

“Waking the Tiger” Peter Levine
