Speaker 2:

Hello everyone, welcome back to the Realized Empath Podcast. I'm Kristen Schwartz, and today we're going to tackle a topic that I know will resonate with many the silent struggle of highly sensitive women in midlife. Women often face significant changes during midlife, from hormonal shifts to evolving relationships. For highly sensitive women, these transitions can be especially challenging. So today we're going to explore the unique impact of midlife transitions on highly sensitive women, their silent struggles and how we can navigate this stage with grace and understanding. Struggles, and how we can navigate this stage with grace and understanding. Plus, at the end of the episode, I have a special invitation for you to receive my midlife renewal training. So stay tuned and let's explore this together. So let's start with the changes that often occur in midlife.

Speaker 2:

Highly sensitive women experience these transitions more intensely because of their deep emotional and sensory processing. Hormonal changes, such as those leading to menopause, can actually amplify emotional sensitivity, and physical changes can feel overwhelming, and there's also a sense of identity shift that can happen during midlife. There's also a sense of identity shift that can happen during midlife as women reassess their roles. Maybe when their children leave home, they reassess their relationships and looking forward into the future. Highly sensitive women might feel more overwhelmed by sensory stimuli or even more affected by emotional upheavals during this time. It's totally understandable. Or even more affected by emotional upheavals during this time. It's totally understandable. And what this can do is it leads to heightened feelings of anxiety or sadness as the world feels like it's changing rapidly and also dramatically all around them. It's almost like the floor can feel like it's being taken out from under you.

Speaker 2:

During midlife, highly sensitive women often face silent struggles. They may feel more alone in their experiences, especially if their sensitivity isn't understood or acknowledged by those around them. A lot of times, society expects women to be strong and resilient and also more quiet about their pain, while, of course, highly sensitive women are strong, but they may also need more time and space to process their emotions and all the change that's happening around them, and this can lead to feeling more misunderstood or overlooked, especially if they are expected to push through, get over their feelings or maybe not even mention how they're feeling at this time of their life. The silent struggle often comes from not feeling validated, not being supported and living in a society that doesn't talk about it enough.

Speaker 2:

Coping with midlife changes as a highly sensitive woman involves finding balance and support. It's important to recognize that it's okay to feel deeply and to need time to process change, and finding those supportive friends or family or communities to understand and validate their experiences can be incredibly helpful. And also engaging in activities that bring you joy and peace during this time can also be very beneficial, and that can be things like creative pursuits or walk in nature or picking up a new hobby, or even just quiet time to reflect. Highly sensitive women often thrive when they have that space and time to process their emotions in their own way. So setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care during this time is really important to maintain emotional well-being. So midlife transitions can also be a time of great strength and purpose for highly sensitive women. As we navigate the change, we can discover new passions, we can reframe our identities, we can embrace our sensitivity as a gift rather than this burden. So this period can actually empower us to relinquish societal expectations and embrace more of our true selves. So finding purpose in this stage of life, whether it's through new hobbies or volunteering or personal development, can provide you a more sense of fulfillment. It's a time to celebrate the wisdom and the strength of your experience and focus on what truly matters.

Speaker 2:

Now let's touch on a piece of midlife that really impacts our brain and our mind and our body health, and that's the hormonal changes that we go through. So hormonal changes during midlife greatly impact our nervous system, our brain health and our mental state. Fluctuations in our hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, can influence neurotransmitter activity and that can affect our mood or cognition and our overall mental health. So for highly sensitive women, these changes can actually heighten emotional responses and increase our sensitivity to stress. So understanding how these hormonal shifts impact the body and mind is really important for navigating this stage of life. So practices such as mindful eating, regular exercise, stress management I think what's really important, too, is taking a really good look at not only what we're putting in our body but on our body, trying to cut down on the chemicals and the additives that actually have a negative impact on our hormones. It's not that we're trying to have the hormones of a 20 or early 30-year-old. We're just trying to regulate our hormones in a way that our symptoms aren't so life-altering.

Speaker 2:

So let's talk about midlife going through midlife in a youth-obsessed society, in a youth-obsessed society. Living in a youth-obsessed society can make midlife particularly challenging for women. The pressure to maintain a youthful appearance while adapting to dramatic changes in your body can lead to feelings of inadequacy or frustration. And this pressure can be especially overwhelming for sensitive women, as we are more attuned to societal expectations and also our internal emotional responses to that. So gracefully adapting to the changes that are happening involves more self-compassion and also a shift in perspective. So embracing the beauty of aging, focusing on your health and well-being and rejecting unrealistic standards can help highly sensitive women navigate midlife with more confidence and grace. It's about finding beauty and strength in the changes rather than resisting them.

Speaker 2:

So let's talk about some practical tips for navigating midlife. First, prioritize self-care, whether that means regular breaks, healthy eating, updating your skincare routine, gentle exercise, whatever that means for you, I want you to really nourish your mind and body during this season of life. Next, seek support from friends or family or support groups those who really understand and validate your experiences. Third, I want you to embrace your sensitivity at this time of life. Acknowledge your sensitivity at this time of life to be something that's just letting you know that you're going through great change and at times, that's just letting you know that you're going through great change and at times, this change is difficult and there's loss and there's grief, and your body and your mind are fighting against the change. And just use that sensitivity when you are reacting and talking with yourself. Be kind, be courteous, be gentle with yourself. So use your own sensitivity for you and allow yourself that time to process your emotions. Finally, explore new passions and find purpose in this stage of life, focusing on what brings you joy and fulfillment.

Speaker 2:

Midlife can be a great time to refocus our purposes, because it's also a great time of change and loss. Our parents are aging and maybe passing away. Our kids are moving out of the house. We're losing hormones. We feel like we're losing vitality. A lot of times we're losing sleep. There's a lot of loss. So bring new passions into this time of life and reignite your purpose.

Speaker 2:
