Gamifying Workplace Learning the Right Way, with Karl Kapp
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of L&D Go Beyond podcast, Amit Garg speaks with Karl Kapp about gamifying workplace learning the right way.
Karl started his discussion by highlighting the confusion between gamification and game-based learning. The common mistake that many people make is considering that gamification necessarily involves some kind of a game. Taking an example of progress bar, feedback loop, etc. he explained that the correct idea or concept is using game elements or the pieces of game. Gamification can also be done using concepts or psychological ideas such as story-based instruction. Karl also explained 3 types of gamification, namely Structural Gamification, Content Gamification and Performance-based Gamification. Gamification in his opinion allows us to have transparency into what is being evaluated, how it is being evaluated and what our goals are. So, if the parameters are reasonable and decided upon in consultation with the learners themselves, gamification can be very helpful and motivating. As a learning professional, our job he emphasized is to decide what the right learning intervention is at the right time and how to do it effectively.
Here are the key takeaways from this podcast:
- Envisioning KPIs through gamification for performance improvement and feedback.
- Employee group contribution in devising the gamified experience.
- Gamifying the process and not the end outcome by focusing on behaviors and elements which are enabling the overall performance.
- Transitioning from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation with extrinsic as a trigger.
- Tips on avoiding mistakes in applying gamification to workplace learning.
- Games as a vehicle for non-linear thinking in unveiling insights for organizations in the competitive marketplace.
