Speaker 2:

Now let me tell you a true crime story. Wow, do I ever have a salacious but very sad story for you today? I'm doing something different for this episode. I'm going to cover a story that's happening now. This case broke about a month ago when 36-year-old Georgia mom of three, lindsay Shiver, her alleged lover, and an alleged would-be hitman, were arrested on July 21 in the Bahamas. Bahamian prosecutors charged them with conspiracy to commit murder and offense that carries a 30 to 60-year prison sentence. And you will probably hear me say alleged and allegedly way too many times during this podcast, but I feel like I have to do that because these people are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and this case hasn't gone to court yet, so that's why I have to use that word so much.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay Shiver was born Lindsay Shirley on October 28, 1986 in Dothan, alabama. She will turn 37 this October. By the looks of it on social media, her parents appear to still be together and she has two brothers. Several websites online have named her family members, but I'm not going to hear. There's no point in doing that. They didn't ask for this spotlight that has been shined on their family ever since these events transpired. According to several news outlets, lindsay Shiver attended Houston Academy, a private school, then went to Troy University before moving to Auburn University. Both are in Alabama. In 2005, lindsay Shiver took home the crown at the Miss Houston County pageant. She also competed that fall in the National Peanut Festival pageant and she won second runner-up there. She graduated from Auburn in 2009 with a degree in marketing.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay's husband, robert Shiver, is 38 years old. He attended a private school called Brookwood School in Thomasville, georgia. There he played baseball, basketball and football. After graduating from high school, he went to Auburn University as a walk-on for their football team, the Auburn Tigers. Now I'm about to show you guys how ignorant I am when it comes to sports. I had no idea what a walk-on meant, so I had to look it up. For those of you who also don't know what it is, I will tell you what I now kind of understand it to be. A walk-on is an athlete that becomes part of a college sports team and has not received any form of athletic financial aid. In other words, they have not been awarded a scholarship. They are essentially trying out for the team. After that, though, robert did end up receiving a three-year scholarship with the Auburn Tigers when Robert was a senior at Auburn. A 2008 roster on the Auburn Tigers website shows that Robert's position was deep snapper. At that time he was 6'3 and weighed 222 pounds. He went on to have a short stint in the NFL, playing for the Atlanta Falcons. In 2009, he started working at Senior Life Insurance Company and is now executive vice president there.

Speaker 2:

Lindsey Shirley and Robert Shiver met at Auburn University in a fitness class. They married in March of 2010,. So as of this year 2023, the couple has been married for 13 years. They have three young boys whose ages are 4, 10, and 11. The New York Post reported that sources have said that Lindsey Shiver started to change at some point. It goes on to state that, quote the friend suspected Shiver was having an affair. End. Quote the friend said Thanks. Quote from the outside looking in, it was all perfect, but she was bored for a long time. Lindsay was a firecracker. Another quote in the article from Lindsay's friend says quote she lived a double life, this Georgia housewife with the lovely kids and the Bahamas bad girl. She got caught up in something really bad. It's sad.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay is said to have made frequent trips to the island of Abaco in the Bahamas, where she and her husband have a vacation home or have access to a vacation home. I'm not sure if the couple owns it or if it's owned by Robert Shiver's family. Seemingly, his family is pretty well off. Robert Shiver's dad served as CEO of Flowers Foods, the company that makes nature's own tasty cake, dave's killer bread and many others. The company is number two in packaged bakery foods in the United States and had nearly five billion dollars in sales in 2022. His dad worked there for four decades, starting there in 1978, and was their CEO from 2013 until his retirement in 2019. And just for reference, the current CEO of Flowers Foods makes about $6.5 million in total compensation yearly. This includes a base pay of nearly $1 million, plus bonuses and stocks, etc. The Shiver's vacation home is located on Great Gana K, one of the smallest lease-populated Ks within the Abaco chain of islands. It's in an ultra-exclusive, member's only residential community called Bakers Bay Golf and Ocean Club. Tom Brady and Michael Jordan have homes there.

Speaker 2:

Reportedly, robert suspected Lindsay was cheating on him and hired a private investigator to tail her and track her activities on the island in the Bahamas. Allegedly, the PI took photos of Lindsay spending time with her 28-year-old lover, terrence Adrian Bethel, who goes by Adrian. It's been reported that Robert confronted Adrian Bethel and said sarcastically to him something like Thanks for taking care of my wife After learning of her affair. It's been reported that Robert no longer allowed Lindsay access to the home in the Bahamas or to their private jet. Then, in early April of this year, robert filed for a divorce from Lindsay. He wanted the divorce on grounds of her quote-unquote adulterous conduct and said that the marriage is irrevocably broken. In the court filing he said that Lindsay was not entitled to alimony because she was able-bodied and able to work. He cited her degree in marketing from Auburn University as her means to support herself financially. In the civil action suit, robert Shiver requested sole custody of their three boys, possession of their $2.5 million seven-bedroom, seven-bath, 7,800 square foot home on almost four acres in Thomasville, Georgia, all of the home's furnishings and possession of his vehicle.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay filed for divorce the very next day after Robert filed for a divorce. Her divorce filing contends that the marriage is irrevocably broken, with no hope whatsoever for a reconciliation. It also states that she feels unsafe in their home and claimed that Robert has been abusive to her in front of their kids, physically, mentally and emotionally. She said she installed locks on the interior doors of the home for her protection. The civil suit alleges that Robert punishes her financially, hides money from her and he cut her off from funds she uses to run the household. She said that she has quote incurred debt beyond her means to pay and quote and asked that her husband be made to pay them. She also alleges that he uses the kids to punish her by not allowing her to talk to them and taking them away for long periods of time. Lindsay said in the suit that she's been the children's primary caregiver since they were born. She said she's been a stay-at-home mom, has not worked outside of the home in some time and therefore has limited employment opportunities. She claimed that her affair was during their separation and was quote unquote legally condoned by her husband. On August 1, after the alleged murder conspiracy came to light, lindsay's divorce lawyer filed a motion to withdraw from the case as her attorney.

Speaker 2:

Police body cam video surfaced online from an incident that occurred at the Shivers Home in Georgia on July 16. I'm going to play audio of the body cam footage for you, but since you can't see what's going on, I'm going to explain it to you a little bit first, then maybe, when you hear it, you might better understand it. City of Thomasville, georgia. Police department officers responded to the Shivers Home after Lindsay called police. The video starts out with Lindsay Shiver and three officers standing in her driveway. She explains to the officers that they filed for a divorce, but they're still living in the same house. She said they had travel plans to leave that morning. She said she called the police because her husband physically moved her away from her car and tried to unload her car of her kids' suitcases. An officer asked her what she wants them to do like, how she wants the officers to help her. The officers then wanted to speak to Robert after they asked Lindsay if he'd done anything physical to her or put his hands on her. Lindsay then repeated that Robert had pushed her away from her car so that he could get their kids' belongings from it. They all walk closer to the house near the open garage doors. Two of the three garage doors are open and there's a dark colored Cadillac Escalade parked in the middle garage door which is presumably Lindsay's vehicle, and there is a white four-door Ford truck backed up to the first open garage door.

Speaker 2:

Robert tells cops that for the past three weeks Lindsay's had a couple's trip planned with her boyfriend to go to Key West. He said he's on the way to the Bahamas with his kids. He said that the day before Lindsay had told him she changed her plans and was now going to get on their airplane with him and the kids and go to the Bahamas. Once in the Bahamas she would go elsewhere with her boyfriend and Robert and the kids would go to their house. Robert said he would not allow her to get on the plane with him and the kids because that would mess with their heads. He goes on to say that he owns 50% of an airplane and that on paper Lindsay owns 25% of it. He said the other person that owns the other half of the airplane agrees with him that Lindsay not be allowed on the plane. So he said that that means that with his 25% part ownership and the other person's 50% ownership, that's 75%, that don't want Lindsay on the plane.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay brings up the alleged pushing incident and Robert claimed he did not push Lindsay away from the car. The officer explains to Robert and Lindsay that the pushing would be an act of simple assault. But in this situation it's, he said she said, because it can't be proven if it happened or not. As Robert gets his kids' suitcases out of the back of Lindsay's Escalade and puts them in his truck, lindsay tells Robert she's still going. He responds to her by saying that the pilot said it was too late to put her on the plane. Lindsay says she's got to go pick up two of her kids. Robert comes out of the garage door that leads into the house with a young child in his arms and puts him in his truck.

Speaker 3:

So what's going on y'all? Are you separated, or what's the deal?

Speaker 1:

We have filed for divorce. We're living in the same house. It's hell on earth, as you can imagine. But anyway, woke up this morning. We have travel plans to leave and he's insisting that I don't go. And then I have my keys, he starts, moves me out of the way, starts trying to unload my car, tells me he ends the car, he ends the rights to it. Just got super aggressive and that's when I called immediately because he's been physical before and I'm just not.

Speaker 3:

Okay. So are you just wanting to leave, or is he supposed to be going with you?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we're supposed to be going with our kids, okay, all right. So I don't know what I was asking. Just that's like what y'all can do if there's even, but of course now he's inside acting.

Speaker 3:

I mean I don't know what it is that you want us to do. I mean, if y'all are have filed for divorce and y'all are going on a vacation, other than telling him he needs to calm down, I don't personally recommend you go on a vacation. If together, if there's an issue like that and y'all filed for divorce, I mean it's obviously a hostile situation, so is there a way that you can go without him? I mean, the best thing that what we're going to do is tell y'all that y'all need to separate. Has he put his hands?

Speaker 1:

on you that y'all have been physically aggressive today, no just besides him moving me out of the way of my car to get to it, okay.

Speaker 3:

What do you mean? He moved you out of the way. Push me out of the way so he could get to my car and start unloading it. We're going to need to talk to him then. Temple.

Speaker 1:

Temple.

Speaker 3:

Well, I'm sure he comes out here and decides to show out, so I don't know what's going to happen with that. You want to know what you want, nope. Maybe it would hurt if somebody was almost out of sleep in that house.

Speaker 3:

This house Before they realized it. Yeah, what in the hell? Why are you proud for divorcing and going on vacation together? I mean, that's not something that we can work out for you? I mean because we're going to tell you to separate, okay. So what's going on this morning? So the last three weeks, maybe longer, she's had her couples trip planned, with her boys running to Key West. Okay, but she just said you're going, she tells, to Key West, I'm taking my kids, my three boys, to Bahamas, her kids, our kids.

Speaker 3:

Yesterday she said in the midst of saying that she's going to change her plans and now get on the airplane with me and the kids to go to Bahamas. And we're planning she's going to go to her boyfriend Elsewhere and me and the kids are going to her house. And I told her I'm not supporting that and you're not getting on the airplane. That can mess with the kids heads and it's just something I'm not going to do. Well, I'm at 50% of the airplane. She, on paper, owns 25 of that and majority owner. The other 50% owner and myself are both in agreements to not have her on the airplane.

Speaker 1:

So 75% says we don't want you on the plane. That doesn't mean you get aggressive. Push me out of the way, start unloading my car. Push you out of the way, yes, as a back of the car. Okay, does he have to? Not push you or anything. He doesn't want me to go. I raised the bag to grab my kids suitcases With a locked car so we can leave All of this.

Speaker 3:

Okay, I'm going to tell you both, like I told you a minute ago, y'all are filed for divorce. Okay, in situations like this, the best thing that we always recommend is y'all separate, don't just separate from each other. You don't need to be going on vacation together if you file for divorce, and it's obviously a volatile situation that I mean I don't, I don't know how else to put it other than that. As far as the pushing and shoving, say, georgia advises that you put your hands on each other, that is an act of simple assault and you can be arrested on that for family violence. Okay, you're saying he did, he's saying he didn't. So I got, I can't, I can't, I can't sit here. He said, she said situation. We run into it all the time. So what's going to all the people that I know if I'm aggressive?

Speaker 1:

or abuse of personal.

Speaker 3:

Okay. So here's what's going to happen today. I'm going to generate a report that we were out here and that we may contact with the both of you. I'm going to generate a report that states you said he physically moved you away from the vehicle by pushing you away from the vehicle. You say I didn't do that. I opened the back hatch of the vehicle, got two cases out. She stepped in front saying you're not grabbing me out, exactly, and I said that we're not going to go back and forth. That's how we're going to do that.

Speaker 3:

My next I mean I can't tell her she can't go on vacation with you. Okay, it's marital property, that's that I already said. Okay, it's, it's all gonna all be. That's all gonna be civil, civil issues. I can't stop her. I can't say you can't go. Wherever the heck it is, you want to go? I can't tell you. You can tell that that has nothing to do with what we're doing here. We're here because of acts of violence, to calm the situation. That's what we're here to do. Okay, I can't. I can't control y'all going on vacation. I don't recommend going on vacation together, but that's just my personal.

Speaker 1:

I mean, that's an hour on airplane Just with our kids.

Speaker 3:

Do you have any identification? Okay, can I get that, please? Do you have your ID on you?

Speaker 1:

I do.

Speaker 3:

Mr Shriver, what's your phone number? 221. What was it? 7579. Now, since, since I own this vehicle and it's solely in my name, it's marital property right now she still has access to it. I understand she has access to it, but can I get my kids two cases out of her back? Yeah, you can get your children's property out of it.

Speaker 1:

So he can get the kids stuff out of my car.

Speaker 3:

It's marital property and I don't have any paperwork saying that he's not allowed access to the children's property.

Speaker 1:

He's just not able to move me out of the way to get it right.

Speaker 3:

He said, she said oh, she'll go in, robert, so you can take. The pilot already says one's here, it's too late, but you want to know that he has to pick up the other owner after he drops us. So we can't be late. So we kind of have to go through that. Here's your ID back. About what time this morning did all this start? 7am, so you're supposed to be going to the she was supposed to be going to Key West and cancel the proof.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we'll go to Key West and cancel the proof.

Speaker 2:

Well, here I text the pilot.

Speaker 1:

Everybody knew her.

Speaker 3:

Okay, he's just being extremely difficult.

Speaker 1:

Which that's nothing to freaking name.

Speaker 3:

Okay, so are you leaving now?

Speaker 1:

I have to go get my kids. Okay, alright, there's two that are in other places.

Speaker 3:

Okay, alright, like I said, my only recommendation for you is that y'all just separate.

Speaker 1:

There's always just going to be a. He's that, she's that.

Speaker 3:

I mean you get video footage, you have surveillance cameras, you have something that I can look at and say yes, he put his hands on you. I mean, you know, we have an independent witness that's non-biased. I mean, you know something? Other statements, but right now I have you and him and you know he's saying one thing, you're saying another, you know? I mean, if it's this type of situation, y'all just need to separate. I mean, just don't be around each other.

Speaker 1:

If it's going to be like this, how do we do that with three kids?

Speaker 3:

Alright, what do you have?

Speaker 1:

any cops. So now I'm able to get my kids stuff back out of the vehicle.

Speaker 3:

Okay, why are we doing this, though? Why do you need to do that? Well, because he's taking my kids, I'm going to go back and so we're going to stand here while y'all go back and forth moving suitcases back and forth between cars.

Speaker 1:

So that's what's just happened.

Speaker 3:

If that's what you feel like you need to do, then I mean, then by all means do it. But you understand it. It's making the situation worse, and you're doing it in front of the children. Now I don't. Our plans have been the same for weeks. I'm going to pick up our two kids.

Speaker 1:

I just told her I was going to do that. Let them just call me and say you can get it. We'll all go get Grayson. I can pick him up. I just said I'm going to get Grayson. You heard me say the pilot said it's too late to ask and I'm going to get.

Speaker 3:

Grayson, where's he going Because?

Speaker 1:

I need to get him, so I can get him, which is not. I'm trying to take all three boys.

Speaker 3:

This is what I'm planning on, asking where you're going Because I need to pick him up and I can just be a straight forward we're going to get you, robert.

Speaker 1:

Where is he right now? Is he at Chateville's house?

Speaker 3:

No, who's house is he at?

Speaker 1:

What's he supposed to do? I can pick him up on the way out. I'll grab you a weapon, so you're free to go. I'm doing what I had planned the other day. This is a record of it.

Speaker 3:

It's all Okay, wait right here. I got to get you both case number Okay.

Speaker 2:

That's about it. For the body cam footage. The police officer goes back to her police cruiser and gets two pamphlets and writes the case number on each of them. She then walks back up to the house and hands one to Lindsay. Then she hands the other to Robert as he straps his little boy into his car seat.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay's alleged lover, adrian Bethel, is from Abaco. A source told the New York Post that, quote he's a smooth guy and quote and quote he likes to socialize with the tourists and the people with second homes. And quote in the Bahamas Adrian Bethel worked as a bartender at Grabbers Bar and Grill. The bar is about three miles away from Bakers Bay, the exclusive members only community where the shivers have their home on the island. The area is said to be a paradise. It's gorgeous, laid back and peaceful. There are beautiful huge yachts and magnificent homes. Many people get around on the island on golf carts. Reportedly, grabbers Bar is where Adrian Bethel and Lindsay met. Lindsay's friend told the New York Post that once Robert filed for divorce, lindsay didn't hide her affair with Adrian Bethel. She would openly spend time with him and his friends.

Speaker 2:

One of Adrian Bethel's friends, the man who was to be the alleged hitman, 29-year-old Farron Newbold Jr, who reportedly goes by Falo, is from Abaco too. Supposedly, he and Adrian Bethel have known each other since childhood, but beyond that I couldn't find any more information or details about their friendship. According to a family member of Farron Newbold Jr and his father that court TV reporters caught up with in the Bahamas, the alleged would-be hitman, farron Newbold Jr, comes from a nice family and is a hard worker. He has a good job working for Bahamas' power and light. He is reportedly an engineer and an aspiring music producer. He also works with his father, who helps to develop the island, which was devastated by Category 5 hurricane Dorian in 2019. Farron Newbold Jr's father, farron Newbold, is chief counselor of the Central Abaco District Council and chairman of the Dundas Town Committee.

Speaker 2:

Allegedly, the murder conspiracy plot was uncovered when Bahamian police were investigating an unrelated break-in at Grabbers Bar and Grill, where Adrian Bethel was a barman at the time. The police searched Grabbers staff members' phones, including Adrian Bethel's phone, in relation to the break-in. That's when they discovered messages and photos on WhatsApp, which is a free instant messaging app between Lindsay Shiver, Adrian Bethel and Farron Newbold Jr, allegedly discussing killing Robert Shiver. Lindsay allegedly sent pictures of her estranged husband Robert to Farron Newbold Jr along with the words, quote unquote kill him. That text was allegedly sent on July 16,. The same day the police went to Lindsay and Robert's home in Georgia and it was captured on the police body cam. According to the Daily Mail, during a police interview Lindsay admitted to sending the messages and photos. Later she claimed she was just venting to her friends and was not serious about having her husband murdered. Robert was alerted by the Bahamian police of the murder plot. He flew back to the United States shortly thereafter, probably out of fear for his and his kids' lives.

Speaker 2:

Lindsay is currently out on bail. She's required by the court to wear a GPS ankle monitor and has to abide by a curfew. The New York Post stated that she's rented a Kia sedan to use locally and, according to Court TV, lindsay has leased a property on Cable Beach in Nassau on New Providence Island. She can leave her residence at 6 am and must be back in before 8 pm. She's required to stay in the Bahamas and check in at the Cable Beach police station three times a week on Mondays, wednesdays and Fridays between 9 am and 6 pm.

Speaker 2:

Adrian Bethel and Farron Newbold Jr were released on $20,000 bond each. They must also wear ankle monitors, abide by a curfew and check in three times weekly. Their check-in location is the Central Police Station in Nassau on New Providence Island. Further conditions of their bond release include that the three defendants cannot interact with one another. They cannot talk to any witnesses or potential witnesses in this case, they are prohibited from making contact with Robert Shiver and cannot go within 100 feet of him. Lindsay cannot talk to her children. The defendants cannot travel. They must stay in Nassau. They had to surrender their passports. All three suspects have been charged together as co-conspirators and share the same attorney. Adrian Bethel broke his silence upon his release on bond and told Daily Mail that the text messages exchanged by Lindsay, farron, newbold Jr and himself were blown out of proportion by the police. He said he believes that the charges will be dropped. He also declared his love for Lindsay Shiver.

Speaker 2:

Before Lindsay Shiver was released on bail, she was held in the notorious Fox Hill prison. Reportedly, she wore a gold, diamond studded Cartier love bracelet worth thousands of dollars while incarcerated because guards couldn't find a way to remove it. Apparently, the love bracelets have to be taken off with a screwdriver. It was initially reported that Lindsay's husband, robert, posted her $100,000 bail to get her out, but later Court TV reported that he did not post her bail. However, robert did agree to her release with prosecutors. Lindsay's family wired the money to her Bahamian attorney after she was able to secure a lease to rent a place in the Bahamas because it was a requirement of her release that she remain in the Bahamas. Upon her release, lindsay told the New York Post quote I really can't say too much right now. It's been hard, but I can't speak about it, presumably about the key as she's rented. She said quote now I'm having issues with my car. I have to deal with that now on top of everything else, but I really can't say anything more. I'm sorry. Thank you for being respectful and quote.

Speaker 2:

The Fox Hill prison in Nassau, where Lindsey was held for about 20 or so days, is run by the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services. The prison is located on the east side of New Providence Island in Nassau and is known for its very harsh conditions, at least for the male inmates. In a 2021 Human Rights Report on the Prison, it states that the prison was overcrowded and inmates had poor nutrition. There was inadequate sanitation and inadequate medical care. Maximum security cells for men were 6 feet by 10 feet and held up to 6 prisoners. There were no mattresses or toilets in the cells. Buckets were used for human waste. The cells were infested with rats, maggots and insects. There is a separate area for women at the prison, which is where I'm assuming that Lindsey was held. While at Fox Hill, the female campus averages around 40 female prisoners, according to the same 2021 report Quote, the women's facilities were generally more comfortable, with dormitory-style quarters and adequate bathrooms.

Speaker 2:

Court TV correspondent Matt Johnson, who has been present in court during the three defendants' recent court hearings, has reported that Lindsey, adrian Bethel and Farron Newbold Jr sit together in a cordoned-off area, sort of a box with bars. I looked that up and discovered that it's called a dock and it's the reserved seating area exclusively reserved for criminal defendants in the British Commonwealth and many other countries. Court TV's Matt Johnson said that at one hearing, farron Newbold Jr, who was wearing a face mask like a COVID mask, lowered his mask, looked toward the media seated in the gallery and asked them who they were with and where they were from. Presumably he was curious about the international reporting being done on the case. Matt Johnson also said that Lindsey and Adrian Bethel were looking into each other's eyes and touching each other at times. Lindsey was giggling and that just baffled me. I don't understand how that makes any sense, being that the three defendants aren't even supposed to communicate with one another. During another court appearance, lindsey and her alleged lover, adrian Bethel, were talking in court and it was getting rather quote unquote steamy. According to Court TV's Matt Johnson, he also said that Farron Newbold Jr did not seem to want to talk with them or interact with them. The trio's next court date is October 5th.

Lindsey's grandpa told the New York Post that he was quote unquote sad, shocked and disappointed when he learned Lindsey had been arrested in a murder for hire plot against Robert. He went on to say quote it just tore us up. It's just a shame, a cry and shame for Robert and the kids and everyone else. It's hard to believe because they're such a fine couple and a fine family. I know Lindsey or I thought I did, and I don't know what could have happened, but something happened. I don't know if she lost her mind or what, I don't know. End quote. He said Robert was a quote unquote good fellow and that he never witnessed any signs of domestic abuse. So that's all I have for you guys on this story for now.
