Speaker 1:

Welcome one and all to the Toe Professional Podcast. Remember, this is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know, that are on the go. This is truly the voice of the towing and recovery industry. I'm DJ Harrington, your co-host. You guys know me better as the Toe Doctor and the real main host of this program is the president and publisher of Toe Professional Magazine, a good friend of the industry and a dear friend of mine, Darren Weaver. Darren, how are you this beautiful day?

Speaker 3:

Man DJ, I tell you I am glad to be here and just want to get everybody hooked up, and hooked up is the term today.

Speaker 1:

Are you going to tell everybody about that?

Speaker 3:

Hey, let me tell you I might be a CEO, but you can't get the country boy out of me. And yesterday I slipped off and did a little quick fishing during my lunch break. And this morning I had to clean the vehicle out and was getting my fishing rod out hooked the side of my shorts, and while I was getting that out I firmly set that treble hook into my thumb. So I hooked myself up this morning, caught a bass yesterday and a donkey today. So it was a good one, it's hooked up and ready to go.

Speaker 1:

You are too. I didn't know. You were going to tell the audience. I want all of you to know. He is a big boy. Did you get a shot while you were going to tell the audience? I want all of you to know. He is a big boy. Did you get a shot?

Speaker 3:

while you were there. Oh yeah, well, I actually had to drop my vehicle off for service, so I just cut the hook off, left it in my thumb, ran over and dropped my vehicle off and ran to urgent care, got me a technos shot. And, man, let me tell you if I'd have known about that shot that puts your finger to sleep. I, man, let me tell you, if I'd have known about that shot that puts your finger to sleep, I'd have just pulled it out myself and called it a day. So yeah, I've had plenty, I've had enough shots today and I am good to go.

Speaker 1:

So let me tell you it's a good day. So you got a bass one day and you got a donkey the next day.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I got the jackass the next day.

Speaker 1:

Boy. I tell you, Our poor listeners, what a way to start the program.

Speaker 3:

Man, hey, I want everybody to know I'm human, just like you. You got that right, buddy. Well, dk, this is.

Speaker 1:

Tell us about some of these people you want to talk about today.

Speaker 3:

Well, man, this is going to be a good one, because this is something me and you've always talked about in the background, and we've talked about it the shows to the different folks that are here but it's it's training. And what we want to do is we want to highlight, you know, some of our key folks in the industry that are out there trying to do everything they can to make this a safer industry and an industry that when you go home, you're not only safe but you're getting paid for what you're doing. And so that's why we're going to talk about ERSCA and what they're doing with their training, with Shane Coleman and their instructors. We're going to talk about Hazmat Responder Network what Perry Beatty's doing over there. You know a lot of folks know him with Flow Stop Products, but he also does the Hazmat Responder Network and hearing great things about his training there. And we're also going to talk about an episode we've had in the past.

Speaker 3:

One of our advertisers here and great sponsors is Recovery Billing Unlimited. Because what they do is you know their slogan, dj is you do the work, you deserve to get paid. So they want to make sure you're getting paid on every invoice you put out there. So I think this is key to the industry every invoice you put out there. So I think this is key to the industry. You guys are out there doing the work, but the key is getting your home safe and also getting you paid for what you do. So that's one thing we're going to talk about today.

Speaker 1:

Well, I'm with you and I know how many times you and I have talked about when you kiss your loved ones goodbye in the morning. Whether you're male or female, you want to come home to your loved ones at night and, if with proper training, that is possible, so I agree with you. I think this would be a great one. So, whichever one you want to start with, I believe Erskine is one of the good ones out there. Our friend at Flow Stop, terry Beatty, I could be president of his fan club.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, let me tell you he's something else man. He's a great heart. A toer from the get-go, raised in the industry, ran his own towing business from the get-go raised in the industry, ran his own tolling business and then took that knowledge and turned it into something to put products out there for the industry to help owners get their job done easier and safer, and then also put it right into training so he could show owners how they could branch and have another business inside their business with Hazmat Responder Network so while they're out there on the call they can handle this as well. That gets them paid again and he shows them how to do that, how to get paid and how to be certified. So, yeah, we've got some great things here. But first off, let's start with Erska and talk about what they're doing there. A lot of folks know shane coleman in the industry phenomenal man, great family man, great man of god and just a phenomenal trainer, uh, dj. But with erska they offer many things. Um, you know one of their big programs now is train the trainer. Um, but they offer many uh certificate programs inside erska, one being essentials of standard duty, towing and Recovery. It's just simply a course that focuses on the essential criteria necessary for all standard duty operators operating equipment under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Now the emphasis they put is on safety, conduct, appearance, truck inspection, maintenance, equipment knowledge, ratings and tow capacities. Dollies, you know basic recovery and including also calculating resistance, winches, wire, ropes, hoeing and hookup techniques and scene incident management and hookup techniques and scene incident management. So this training reflects industry standards, federal, state and local laws, manufacturers guidelines and company policy. So that's one, the standard duty towing and recovery Phenomenal program, essentials of heavy duty towing and recovery. If you say, hey, we've already got light duty towing taken care of. What about heavy duty? They've got it handled for you. And this is operators operating equipment over 26,000 pound gross vehicle weight. And they go through the maintenance of course equipment knowledge, truck inspection, conduct, appearance, safety, same things as the first, but all applying to your heavy duty signs. And then there's other courses advanced winch and rigging safety for standard duty.

Speaker 3:

Ersca, electric vehicle operation training. This is a big one, dj. This is one everybody's asking about. How do we deal with these electric vehicles? Where are the pickup points? Where are we hooking up on these? Because a typical bridle's not working like on a normal car and this EV course is eight-hour operations training. It's a combination of classroom and practical training and the emphasis on operator safety during basic towing, road service, recovery of hybrid and battery electric vehicles is the focus. Electric vehicles is the focus Now. The topics are PPE, emergency response guide, iso standards, identification, vehicle interaction, stabilization, securement, weight distribution, impacts and so on, and the, of course, towing and recovery. Rigging and attachment methods are covered for the vehicles. So there's some great certificate courses that you can take part in and they also do an advanced winch and rigging safety for heavy-duty operators.

Speaker 3:

So many different things offered by ERSCA to get that training through your employees and it's something that I think folks need to. We need to take a look at as an industry because what we always say is what if you hire somebody and they leave? Worst case is, what if you hire them and they stay? They need to be trained because that's going to protect your asset, your biggest asset, your company. Next thing is they do a intro to towing, from light-duty towing, heavy-duty towing and even traffic incident management. So many different things offered through ARSCA and I just think it's an opportunity to get with another leader in the industry that can get these standards taken care of, and when you do have something that comes up, things always happen. Your insurance company asks you've got this certification right here in front of your employees, so that's something that's going to benefit you in the long run. When a problem does come up, your employees are taken care of and that takes some of the liability off of you, because they've got that training.

Speaker 1:

Oh, cj, you got it. That makes sense. Now, if they want to get a hold of ERSCA, what's the best way of getting a hold of them?

Speaker 3:

And I'll tell you there's two ways. They can go directly to the website and get the information. There's a lot of information on this website. They can go to erscaorg. They can email training to simply T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G at erscaorg. Or you can just give them a call and that number. If you want to give them a call and find out when the upcoming courses are, you give them a call at 916-617-2882. That'll get you right to them and DJ.

Speaker 3:

What I want to do is go over a couple Of the dates that they've got coming up On their community calendar. Now some we have Coming up quickly Is the 1st of June. Here are going to be I hope I say this right it's Custatic, california. They've got a heavy-duty winch and rigging class there In Antioch, california. On the 1st they've got an essentials of light-duty towing and recovery class and on the 8th in Hillsboro, new Jersey, they'll be doing an electric vehicle operations training in New Jersey. They'll be doing an electric vehicle operations training in New Jersey. Also, june 11th Essentials of Light Duty Towing and Recovery. That one is on the calendar. That's an online course. So there's another great thing If you can't make it to these, some of these Essentials of Standard Duty Towing and other things.

Speaker 3:

Ersca offers online training as well, so that's something to be advised on. There's ways you can get this training, whether it be in person or online. And then we have June 20th, wisconsin Dells, wisconsin Essentials of Standard Duty, towing and Recovery, and then also June 29th, advanced Winch and Rigging Safety for Heavy Duty. So, again, you guys want to be at these classes, get this training, do their online training, become an instructor, an independent instructor, or get involved in them on the national level. Reach out to them, erskaorg Also, 916-617-2882. They'll be glad to help you out and tell you how they can bring the training to you. Well, dj, with this, I think we need to take a quick minute to thank our wonderful sponsors. We'll step away. Don't go anywhere. When we come back, we'll talk about more of this fantastic training that's offered right here in our wonderful industry. Thanks again.

Please remember to download. We're available on Spotify, itunes, pandora, stitcher, iheartmedia, amazon or wherever you get your podcasts. So, darren, right before the break, we already took care of Erskine. What's another group you want to talk about?

Speaker 3:

I'll tell you this next one I want to talk about. Dj is not only somebody that advertises in the publication, but they're a good friend of mine and that's Perry Beatty. Perry's an awesome man. Many that know him know he's. He owned a towing business in the industry for many years. That's his background. He used that information from that background to develop phenomenal products for the industry when it comes to spill control. He does that with FlowStop, with the company FlowStop.

Speaker 3:

A lot of you guys, men and women, have seen his products at the show, have seen his pumps that he offers, that are certainly a hot topic, but also paired his hazmat responder network and offers training. And let me tell you DJ, I've attended some of his classes. He does a tanker training and he does a hazardous materials technician course. It's a HRNT 1001 is the course description and it's a 40-hour program. It's created to equip towing and recovery professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the mitigation and cleanup of incidents involving hazardous materials and, through a combination of classroom presentations and, as he says, intensive hands-on field exercisesants can apply their newly acquired skills in authentic real-world scenarios. And this course complies with the OSHA 29 CFR, 1910.120 qualification standards and there's no prerequisites and there's no prerequisites. Another thing Perry does with this is he offers a recertification program as well. So not only will he help get you certified but he'll help you keep that HAZWOPER certification. And from what we've seen like I said, dj, just the testimonials I've heard is the money spent was a drop in the bucket for what they spent on the course to send their guys to the revenue stream that it created. We've had many towers that we've talked to, that after a course has went out, that next week been on call and been able to use that new training and it's more than paid for the services times over. So we've talked about this many times in the past.

Speaker 3:

Like when COVID hit, you can't make more toes, so you've got to invent yourself and invent other aspects of the business. And the HasWopper training this HasM training that HAZMAT Responder Network offers, gives you the ability to do. That is to get your team certified so that when you're out there on the scene to pick up a vehicle, you're not waiting on HAZMAT, you have the ability to pick up that revenue stream. Go ahead, secure the site that you're at, do your hazmat cleaning and get your vehicle removed as well. So I say for anybody, take a look at this. You can go to hazmatrncom. It brings you right to the website. There's great information on there, there's registration, there's also hazwopper training. You can click right on there and see what all is included in that course. Cargo Tank Awareness is another course we spoke on earlier. It's Cargo Tank Awareness and Incident Commander Registration and you can sign up right there and get into that course. Dj thoughts.

Speaker 1:

My thoughts. Folks, I want to tell all of our listeners. You know how we meet people and I went to one of Perry's classes. This was maybe five years ago and he was doing flow, stop and, of course, hazmat training, and this is a guy who stands for the flag, kneels for the cross, and he's a wonderful guy. That night we're in Myrtle Beach together. That night he came over to me and I started using a cane back then and he said to me how bad are the legs? I said, oh, perry, they've been real bad. I hope you keep me in your prayers because I know you know God. And he said why don't we pray right now? And right then we prayed for my legs and he has kept me in his prayers every year since then. He's just a fine guy and I'm going to tell all our listeners everything Darren says I condone, because this guy I could be president of his fan club. He's just a wonderful human being and he's a real asset to our industry.

Speaker 3:

Well, I tell you, dj, I tell my wife every day. She says you know you've got a tough job. And I tell her, I said you know I get to go in every day and call all my friends. Because, let me tell you, when you look at a copy of so Professional magazine and you just look at the advertiser index, I can tell you I can step out and speak for every one of those advertisers.

Speaker 3:

Phenomenal people have a great passion for this industry and here's one of them right here Hazmat Responder Network, just like we just talked about with Erska. People have a passion, a love for this industry and just want to make it better. So let me tell you, if you want to get in touch with Perry 877-356-9767, or you can go directly to, like I said, hazmatrncom. I'll take you directly to the website or just shoot them an email. Perry P-E-R-R-Y at hazmatrncom. If you need your hazmat certification or you want to look into it, you wonder what it can do for your company. Give him a call. He's got a stack of testimonials. He'll be glad to refer you to somebody right there in your area that's already used him, that's got the benefits out of this training. So with that DJ. The next thing I want to talk about is I want to put a plug in here. We talked about the other week with Bruce Bender and we talked about TRAO, about the Midwest regional show that's coming up, the event there, and that's one that I love going to. But here's another phenomenal show I want to talk about as well, and that's the Mid-Atlantic show that TRPNC is putting on. That's the North Carolina Tow Truck Trade Show and let me tell you I went to that one last year. Carrie Fogg and her team just blew me out of the water, did a phenomenal job with that show, and this one is coming up, dj, and this is one I think everybody needs to attend. If you didn't go last year, hey, I knew it was new and, uh, it was something that was new to you. But let me go ahead and tell you you don't want to miss it this year. A lot of folks had a tremendous show.

Speaker 3:

Let me tell you this mid-atlantic toe show. It's september the 5th through the 7th this year. It's at the the Jim Graham building and this is inside. You're in the air condition. All of the show trucks are inside, in the air condition as well. They've got some fantastic food there, right there in the premises inside, and there's a lot going on around the Jim Graham building. So this is going to be September the 5th through the 7th. This is a show you don't want to miss. So if you want more information, shoot them an email at trpnc, at nctowingorg, or just give them a phone call 919-921-8194. And again, this is in Raleigh, north Carolina, september the 5 fifth through the seventh. It is gorgeous there and let me tell you, don't miss this show. And within saying that, dj, I think we need to step away, take another quick break from our wonderful sponsors and then come right back. So, listeners, hang in there. We'll be right back with more information about training when we come back from this commercial.

Speaker 5:

These are just a few of the things covered when you attend a class from Recovery Billing Unlimited For class or seminar information visit recoverybillingunlimitedcom. Recovery Billing Unlimited making towers more profitable.

Speaker 1:

Welcome back listeners. Of course you're listening to the number one show, tow Professional On the Go podcast with Darren Weaver, dj Harrington. Remember to like, review and share everywhere, and if you have an association that you want to plug or you want a professional that's in the recovery, you in towing recovery industry, by all means. We have a hotline right here at the studio, uh 706-409-5603, and that industry expert will do our best to put them on the air. So, without further ado, darren, you're about to talk about one of my favorite companies. Talk about Eric and the family.

Speaker 3:

Man. Let me tell you, this family is phenomenal, recovery billing unlimited. Can't say enough about them. I know Eric and his family. I was looking on Facebook the other day just drooling because Eric said Bob had a car show the other week and let me tell you just, the collection he has is phenomenal. Drooling because Eric Steadbob had a car show the other week and let me tell you just, the collection he has is phenomenal. It'd make Jay Leno tear up, I tell you. So that was phenomenal.

Speaker 3:

But I want to talk about their training because recovery billing they're one that I became friends with, with Linda, eric's sister, many years ago when I first got in the market, talked with them about what they offered and she explained to me about listen, these folks go out there, they work hard, they put their heart and soul in everything they do and if they do the work they deserve to get paid.

Speaker 3:

And she says you know, in this industry there's ways that you cannot get paid if something is wrote up wrong.

Speaker 3:

And knowing the knowledge, having the knowledge to get those invoices correctly, get the information out there correctly, is one thing that will get you paid. And as they say on those things that we never pay, that they've got answers and you'll find out they do pay that. So it's a phenomenal program and what they do during these seminars they unlock 40 plus years of billing claims and ops experience in an eight-hour seminar. So this is something you can go in there. I've had testimony told to me of companies that said I've went in there, I've had bills that weren't paid and Eric and his father showed me how to get these bills paid and I was able to go back and get them submitted and paid once they were submitted correctly. So, dj, I think it's really big, not only the training to get out there and be safe while out there assisting the public, but also knowing how and making sure that you're getting paid for all of that hard work that you're doing and sacrifice sure that you're getting paid for all of that hard work that you're doing and sacrifice.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Now can I ask you you're looking at their webpage.

Speaker 1:

I hope Can you tell our listeners how do you get to their webpage and, if they need information, where can they get the information? Bob and Eric are probably two of the greatest human beings I know. I've sat in their classes. They did a class one time. I sat there. I was stunned at how much information they gave in 55 minutes and they gave it to Massachusetts Towing Associates called Statewide. I sat in the class. I was stunned. The next weekend they had their program and everyone that was in the class all attended because it was worth every nickel that they invest. You invest, you get everything back and then some within a short period of time. Oh, they're wonderful people. So how could our listeners get a hold of them?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, real simple. They can go to recoverybillseminarcom real simple. Or I can just simply call them directly. And that number One thing I wanted to say on this also is I wanted to give them the upcoming dates, because what they've got I know, if you had a chance, they had a sold out class the week of the Florida Toe Show.

Speaker 3:

They were down there in Orlando had a sold-out class. They had one at the Las Vegas Toe Show Absolutely sold out. They have one coming up September the 26th. It's going to be at the Chattanooga Toe Show. So that one, I'm telling you, don't sit and wait on this, go ahead and register for it. And then the next one after that is going to be at the Baltimore Toe Show and that's November the 22nd and 23rd. Now, these are classes that they do. They're going to do two of them. So they're going to do two days nine to one, november the 22nd and another one. If you don't catch it that day, get in the class on the 23rd, nine to one. So this is DJ.

Speaker 3:

They go through building the proper business foundation, documenting the scene from start to finish, the proper way of invoicing, how to get paid on various types of insurances, whether it's property damage liability, homeowners, et cetera, how to respond to. Sorry, that's not covered, like I said a moment ago, and we never pay that. They tell you how to respond to that. Also, federal state laws that towers need to know Expert towing and recovery attorney and insurance executive right there in the class. They're on there too on board part of the recovery billing to be able to give you that information right there and answer those questions. So if you want to know more about them, make sure you go to recoverybillingseminarcom and you can get information right there on the site on the upcoming dates, on what all is offered with the class.

Speaker 3:

And if you want to just reach out and give them a phone call and talk with them and ask them when the next time there'll be a course near you, just give them a call at 508-763-5474. 808-763-5474. Or you can email info at recoverybillingunlimitedcom. On all this folks, let me tell you I'm not the prettiest one so I don't get paid for my looks. So make sure when you're talking with anybody, whether it be Erska, whether it be Perry Beatty at FlowStop or Hazmat Responder Network or Recovery Billing Let them know. You heard them here at Toe Professional Magazine, the Toe Professional on-the-go podcast and DJ. Let me tell you, with these three great companies that we mentioned, also with the North Carolina show coming up, that's some fantastic info right there for us.

Speaker 1:

I agree 110%, darren, and the best thing I'd like you to do is this has been a great podcast. Why don't you sign us off and our listeners? I'll see you all next week, but, darren, give us the closing that we all look forward to.

Speaker 3:

Well, let me say one thing real quick that I've learned in my life A lot of times all of us, every one of us out there, I know takes a lot of pride, puts a lot of passion and work into our jobs.

Speaker 3:

I myself put a lot into mine, got a lot of pride in being able to work in this industry and being able to put some benefit into it with the publication. But let me say this Something happens tomorrow, god forbid. They're going to put somebody else in that chair. Even being an owner, I have to look at it and go. Something happens. Somebody else is going to be running my company next week. Take a minute, slow down and realize the job's so important, but let's take a little more time with our families. That was the part we're working so hard for and every once in a while we just got to remind ourselves hey, let's don't get so tied up in the job and forget all those precious moments we need to spend with the family.

Speaker 1:

So just thought I'd need to put that out there, DJ, because I think you're right.

Speaker 3:

Man. I can be a workaholic sometimes, but that's for the family. But at the end of the day, we need to slow down on that work, because that chair can be filled by somebody else at any moment, and put our eyes on the things that are most important. So in saying that, dear Heavenly Father, I just thank you for this wonderful community. I thank you for the towing and recovery industry, for our men and women professionals that are out there putting in the hard work every day to make sure that family members are sent home and they're sent home safely, and that they're not left out there in need of help and support. Father, I thank you for every one of our vendors. I ask that you bless them, increase them, prosper them for their work, give them the information and knowledge they need to make this a safer community, to get the information, the training out there, to make this a safer and more beneficial community for everyone involved in it. Dear Lord, I ask you to keep your hand of protection on them, keep them safe and bring them all back home to their families safe. In your name we pray, father. We just ask you also put your hands on every one of those families that have been affected across our nation by the tornadoes, the weather that's hit here lately. We ask that you be with those families that have lost and give them strength. Lord, help them through that. Your precious name Listeners.

Speaker 3:

We appreciate every one of you for helping make this the top podcast in our industry. We just ask you to keep turning in. Take a look at the upcoming issue of Tow Professional Magazine. It's a feature on service and maintenance. We have a feature on winches. It tells you about servicing your winches key points on all information. You'll need for that some great customer testimonials on products out there and related to software to help you in the industry. And until next time, keep listening, be safe and God bless.
