Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I'm your host, chris Granger. Let's jump in. Alright, guys me, tom, excited to have you here. Let's get right into the world.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so we're in the book of Psalms this week, psalms, chapter 10. Verse 14 is the verse that we really focused on, but we're going to dive all over chapter 10 today, okay. But verse 14 says but you, god, see the trouble, the afflicted. You consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims count themselves to you. You are the helper of the followers. That's some powerful scripture right there. That's some powerful scripture. We're going to really dig deep today, guys. We're going to be digging deep into a cry for justice. We need some Christian men standing up. There's too much injustice happening around all around us and we're going to see specifically we're going to be talking about today just to get around on table, because we're going to talk about how we seek justice with God, including that justice for the unborn.

Speaker 1:

Now, this was a lesson that I taught in my Sunday school class a few months ago, and this lesson was very powerful. I thoroughly enjoyed the preparation, the things like that. We worked with this group called Bible Studies for Life, who helped really put the information together on this, and so I used a lot of their outline to try to get my head around what this Psalm was trying to teach me. And that's what I want to share with you today. And I'm supposed to think about something When's the last time someone stood up for you? Just think about that. When someone stood up for you for the last time, what did it mean to you? I was just thinking I'll end up. There was this time I coached softball and there was this umpire, and this umpire gets a lot of flat because he's very by the rules and he's very, let's just say, pinninated right. But this someone actually made a comment that I was interfering with the first baseman because I coached first base as well, you know, on the first base side when we're hitting, and that umpire squashed it right there because he knew there was no truth in that, because he vouched for my character. At the end of the day, when I talk to the players, I'm just trying to just say I just get to know them, because when you're on, when you're in a field of competition and things like that it's so easy just to get wrapped up in the wins and the losses in the score versus the people. So he squashed it. He stood up for me. That was pretty cool. I really thought that was pretty neat how he stood up for me, because in that moment you know what sometimes you just you need to. It's good to know that other people care and all people care. So that's that one came to mind.

Speaker 1:

And, as before even digging to this, you may be listening. I know we have a lot of ladies who listen to the lion dance and you guys may be listening as well who have something around the idea of of an unborn injustice, maybe abortion or something like that. That's impacting you and you may be struggling with this. So I want to start a woman's 81. Therefore, now there's no combination for those that are in Christ Jesus, because this is not directed at you Well, it's not intent to be at least because I want you to know that, whatever your past is, whatever the things in the past that you've done, that you that you participated in, or whatever it may be, that does not define you.

Speaker 1:

You're not condemned. What is condemned that's unfit for use, that's not you, that's not who God's called you to be. We need to just make sure we clarify the air there. So, do bad things happen? Yes, have they happened sometimes that we regret them? Yes, I'm gonna tell you what. That does not condemn you. God still has a plan for you. He can still use you if you're willing to submit to him.

Speaker 1:

I just want to just make sure that you get that before we get any further, because being a Christian, as we start really stinking thinking about this, that means we have to take a stance when that darkness begins to come around us, and that means sometimes you're gonna be called to do something, to take a stand for people who can't defend themselves and for the unborn. They have no one else. And as I've studied my Bible, read and thought and listened to sermons and all this different type of things, I struggle to find anything that aligns to a viewpoint that is not pro-life. This Bible is very clear. This can be a such a separating issue, but we have to remember we're all image bearers of God. There are no surprise children lots of surprise parents, for sure, right, but no surprise children and each of those kids are fearfully and wonderfully made and that is worth standing up for that right there. That solid truth is worth standing up for. So let's just dig into the scriptures and see what, what it tells us as we unpack this together. So again, we're gonna be in Psalm 10. We'll be in Psalm 10. If you want to follow along and read those scriptures with us, that's exactly where we're gonna be today, okay.

Speaker 1:

So Psalm 10, let's look at the first four verses says why, lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself? Sometimes with trouble and his arrogance, the wicked man huts down the week who are caught in the schemes he devises. He boasts about the cravings of his heart. He blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord and his pride. The wicked man does not seek him and all his thoughts. There is no room for God, man. Think about this for a second. This was written a couple thousand years ago. How relevant. Doesn't sound pretty relevant, right? Have you ever thought for a second that God is so far away he can't hear you? Do you wonder why he let so many things happen? And how flip it? The lost and the evil ones act each day Because there's, there's never gonna be any penalty. That's how they think, right, thank? King David had the same thoughts when he was the violent inspired to write this song.

Speaker 1:

Because when you, when you read that first one, one more time, why, lord, you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself, sometimes with trouble? Hmm, have you ever felt that? Have you ever uttered that? If you haven't, hey, you're super blessed if you haven't said something like that before. But you need to prepare yourself, because the evil one still have to see out there to do, still kill and destroy. That's it. And as it relates to our topic they were gonna be talking about, it can feel like as if he's turned his back on the unborn and we see all the hate and the division that exists in this topic alone and in our finite time here on earth. We can't wrap our minds around how he could allow this to happen. We just can't. So now it's very interesting when we start thinking about this. He gave fish that David, king David gave physical attributes to God, as he said. Look, he stood far off, as if he was hiding right, and Even for the most faithful followers out there I Know for a fact you can feel this way, because I do there's times where I feel like where you at, god, why are you hiding yourself. I Need you right now, I really need you right now. That's just hits real. And he look at verse 2.

Speaker 1:

In his arrogance, the wicked man hunts down the weak who are caught in the schemes when he devises. Now, when we think about arrogance, typically we think about people being cocky, but here what's referring to his pride, the pride that's the pride that we all have at a time to do things our way, not God's way. Right, I got this. The wicked man that he's referring to here Are all those that are acting unjustly. So check this out.

Speaker 1:

If we look in the book of Jude, we'll pull this up real quick. Look at the book of Jude and actually verse 15 Tell, this is a pretty, this is an awesome verse. It says to execute judgment upon all and to convict all the ungodly of their ungodly deeds, which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things in which the ungodly sinners has spoken against him. Wow, you see, the ungodly are all around this and the ones that are fighting against the unborn right. They're not fighting fair, because this is exactly what this song was referring to. The weak ones who are calling the schemes ever been in a wrong place at a wrong time. That's what the Bible's highlighting right here, especially for the unborn. It's a scheme and the evil one is executing it at an extremely efficient rate. He just is. When we see what's happening, he's absolutely executing it, his plan to a tee, and we need to see that. Check this out.

Speaker 1:

Verse 3 he boasts about the cravings of his heart. He blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord. It's amazing what evil can do when we choose to walk in that path. It really is. We start making that decision Because all of a sudden it can lead to boasting, can lead to wanting more and more and more Evil just to satisfy your desire, and it's a trap. And anytime we're giving glory to anything other than the Lord, that's gotta be a red flag, guys. And in case you just want to think about this, you don't have to look very far to see how off base so many people have got it, particularly around the lack of rights for those that are in the womb and the reviling of the Lord that he's talking about right here. This is what being walked out way too frequently. People just don't care. They just don't care.

Speaker 1:

When you look at the last verse here in his pride, the wicked man does not see him In his thoughts. There's no room for God. And then we look at 1 John 2, a couple hanging on the rim verses right here, for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, it's not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away and also it's lust, but the one who does the will of God lives forever. And that's that's 1 John 2, 16 and 17.

Speaker 1:

We got to recognize a couple things. If you're just as a Christian leader, you need to recognize at the gate that the primary tool of the evil one uses is pride. He just does. Pride makes us turn from God and rely on our own strengths, our own abilities, our own money, the resources you name it. Prides looks a whole lot like I got this, don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. You got this.

Speaker 1:

And this is how so many people walking in an evil respond. They clouds the mind up. It really does, to the point where there's no room for God. He can't fit in there anymore. And that's exactly where the evil one wants you to be, because when we are prideful, all he has to do is just stop that fire. That's it.

Speaker 1:

At least so many decisions against the unborn, in particular Because of the court of those decisions, is a resounding fact of how is it going to impact me? That's really it. I can't have this. There's no way, not right now. I'm not ready. It'd be too much of an inconvenience.

Speaker 1:

Things are going really good. It's all pride. It's all pride and we have to recognize that. Because outside I want you to think about this Outside the unborn when else do you see this injustice happening? It's all around us. Think about child trafficking, prostitution, heck, our education system, hunger. It's a big list, big, big list. And we know that the wicked out there we can see from this scripture, right here, in the first four verses of this song, that you know what? They don't care, they don't have any fear of God, that's just they're flipping about it. Who cares? But we need to recognize, as Christian man, as leaders, we have a humble heart. Humble heart, rather. Come and approach God the right way. So we're going to take our first break, guys. They will come back and we'll go keep digging into this song together. We'll be right back.

Speaker 1:

If you're a man is looking for greater spiritual guidance into how to become a better leader. Finding resources that you can trust and then implement can be daunting For me personally. All right, guys, we're back here.

Speaker 1:

So now let's keep digging into this Psalm. So now we're in Psalm 10. We're going to look at verses 12 through 15. So we skip the few, but let's get to 12 through 15. It says arise, lord, lift up your hand. Oh God, do not forget to help us. Why does the wicked man revive God? Why does he say to himself he won't call me to account, but you, god sees the trouble of the afflicted. You consider their grief and take it in hand. If victims commit themselves to you, you are the helper of the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked man. Call the evil doer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found. So, guys, let's dig into this scripture here.

Speaker 1:

Can you feel the passion, can you feel the plea from David? With these verses, he's not calling for a peaceful resolution, he's calling for a strong stance against those who are committing these acts and living ungodly. That passion should drive us. That should drive us to look for the injustice and do something about it. Look at verse 12 again. Arise, lift, oh Lord, lift up your hand, oh God, do not forget the helpless.

Speaker 1:

He was done with lamenting and he moved to asking the Lord to arise. It's like a war cry right here. It's time to take action. Notice he asked God to lift his hand. Good reminder of the power in God's hand. Right, hey, let's check this out real quick. You want a good reminder? How about first Chronicles 29? First Chronicles 29, verse 12. Right here, guys, let me get my glasses right now. You see it Both riches and honor come from you and you rule overall, and in your hand is power and might, and it lies in your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. That's the hand, the mighty hand, the powerful hand, the authoritative hand, and we all need to keep that reverence in mind when we think about our sovereign God, the powerful Lord that we serve. Notice who he asked for help for.

Speaker 1:

Next, the helpless. It's our call as Christians to take the stance for those who can't defend themselves. Bottom line, there are so many out there fall to that category and we have to remember that. That church should rally around the week, put them in the middle, help them gain strength, just like when you see in after geographic right, when the herd they take care of the wounded. We should do the same. The house, that the church, has to be the hospital for the centers, not a country club for for for those just to come check boxes, To rub elbows. No, it has to be the hospital and we need to put the weak ones in the middle and surround them and love on them and help them. Yes, pray for them, but help them physically do something. We have to walk this out.

Speaker 1:

Look at first 13, right here. Why does the wicked man rebel God? Why does he say to himself he won't call me to account? We know why they have no regard for God. They think their actions don't matter. And I'm gonna tell you what Most of you guys do a good job of banal law, but if you remove the consequences, that real test would, would really begin and unfortunately, I think many of us would fall. We just would.

Speaker 1:

The fear, the consequences, is enough to keep us from breaking the law. Think about that if you, if you were, if there weren't no cops that would ever give you a ticket for speeding, how fast would you drive? I Know for me there would be no limit, it wouldn't be. But that fear the consequences keeps us from driving the speed limit or somewhere around the speed limit. Right, think about that. But for the evil person out there, who's walking evil, there's no fear of consequences whatsoever. That doesn't exist. The fear of God doesn't exist in them. And that, my friends, that's a dangerous place to be, an extremely dangerous place to be. And this is where the light of the world is. They're doing what they want to do, what feels good, what makes them feel good in the moment. Yolo, who got a live for right now, and that's a. That's a scary proposition, scary proposition.

Speaker 1:

And when you look at verses 14 and 15, here we see but you, but you got. You see the trouble of the afflicted. You consider grief. The victims commit themselves to you because you are the helper of the. Follow this. Think about that for a second. You break the arm of the wicked man. Call the evil door to account, because otherwise they're not gonna be found out.

Speaker 1:

We have to remember, no matter what afflictions happening all around us. God is in control, he sees all, he's knows all and there is never a second that he is not with us and you can take a ton of refuge in that, particularly around when you see the weak and the, the defenseless, being treated harshly. God's there and we see the biblical mandate to protect the with us and orphans. And, matter of fact, the biblical mandate is found in James 1. If you look at James 1, at verse 27, right here, it says look, pure and undefiled religion and the sight of our God father is this to visit orphans and widows and their distress, and they keep oneself Unstained by the world. Was the last time you spent some time helping a widow or an orphan? It's our call. We can't just say, ah, it's someone else to do it. No, it's our call. We have to take action. It's not an option, this is not optional.

Speaker 1:

And when we see right here what David's calling out to God to do, I think this is awesome. This is some God verse stuff right here. Break the arm of the wicked man. He calls him out. That's some between the eyes intervention right there, fellas. Now we're not. It doesn't say the weird ones here are supposed to be the ones who are breaking the arms, but in special circumstances that may be what God's calling you to do. I'm just saying God calls some strong men to take a stand firm, and sometimes you gotta crack a few shells. You just do. I'm not calling you to go act, no, just go out there and just to hurt people. That's not what they call it. But what this is saying is take a stand for injustice and a firm stance. That's a strong call right there. That's for that call for vengeance is strongest direct.

Speaker 1:

We know David didn't leave anything on table right here Because he knew, though, who's he calling? To God, because he's the ultimate source of power and truth, not us. And we know that he's going to respond because he loves us. And we just see in God's word how clear it is. We're supposed to see him in their distress. That means they're going to face the distress. We can't just bury our heads, pretend it's not happening. The injustice is happening, whether you recognize it and validate it or not. It just is.

Speaker 1:

And it's so easy in the country that we live in the most of you guys are in the US, although we do have a lot of people listen all over the world. It's so easy to just dismiss it and just put it off because we're comfortable. We just are. The fact that you have time or that you listen to a podcast, you have a lot of advantage that most of the world doesn't have. That's we're comfortable.

Speaker 1:

And what God, what David, is telling us right here through the through this song, is that, look, we got it. Yes, we can't just ignore this stuff. God's not going to ignore it. And to be the leader that he's called us to be, that means you got to take a stance. You got to stand firm when you see these things happen, and you can't. You have to do that Through the power of the Holy Spirit. And that means you got for. First of all, look up, look around, ask questions. Don't just assume what you, what's being told to you as the truth. Seek your own, seek the real truth. Look at some pain in the water down version of the truth. No, seek the real truth and listen for that wisdom and discernment. And then, when God tells you to do something, you better do it. Take that step of obedience. So now we're going to see here, as we, as we close to towards the close of this look of Psalm 10, how God responds to that injustice. His response is incredible. So we're going to take our last break, guys, so we'll come back. We're going to finish this up.

Speaker 1:

Looking at this Psalm 10 together, I find it helps me to have a guide at times when I'm reading and studying the Bible. One way that helps me is by using devotionals to God not only what I read, but insights into the scriptures themselves. So we were blessed to become an author on the? U version Bible app and we saw an immediate opportunity to help others with devotionals around the areas that we spend the most time talking about at the land within us. So if you enjoy the show, you may enjoy these devos as well. We have some guys that are using them as part of their small groups as well, as there are great way to get conversations going. So the C, the ones that we created, head over to the lion within us slash you version, and that's why, oh you, the R, s, I, o, n to learn more. So that's the lion within us. Slash you version to get started with your own men's devotional today. All right, guys, welcome back.

Speaker 1:

So look, we've been working through Psalm 10 about this cry right here for justice, because the injustice is happening all around us. Now let's look at Psalm 10, verses 16 to 18 together says the Lord is king forever and ever. The nations will perish from his land. You, lord, here, to the desire of the afflicted, you encouraged him, you listened to their cry, defending the followers and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. Oh, king David, he came full circuit. From where this full circle, rather from where this song began, didn't he? Because sometimes we see injustice happening. You just got to get off your chest, first and foremost, and then you can start moving forward. Maybe that's what David did right here. He was through the, through the divine wisdom. Right he was. He was sharing what was on his heart. He needed to unload it, and then he needed to wisdom from God.

Speaker 1:

A word to go next, and I'm not sure why you see so much, particularly the level of injustice that we see in this world. But I do know one thing God is in control, and I'm thankful for that. I just am when are you. The Lord is king forever and ever. The Lord is king, he's in control, he sovereign over all situations, over every circumstance, and it can be super easy to forget this at times, guys, god is the true king. And when you see those words right there forever and ever that's translated as everlasting and in perpetuity. It never stops, it never ends. He's doubling down on this to emphasize the infinite reign that God has. There was never a time that he didn't exist, there being never a time that he is not in control, and that's worth taking some time right there. It's just sitting in a bench, on a bench somewhere on a field and just thinking about that. There's never a time that God wasn't in control. That's awesome.

Speaker 1:

And when you get to the nation's verse right here, how cool is this? Because he's referring to the Gentiles and, more specifically, the wicked people who are doing whatever they chose instead of surrendering to God and their actions. We see a promise here that those who have done the evil have an ultimate destination that they are not going to enjoy. He doesn't say we're just going to check you. He says we're going to perish you. They will perish. So when you see a justice happening around you, claim to that hope. Right there, his word says they're going to perish. And in that moment, they're going to know who the true king is, who the true king was and who the true king will always be. And at verse 17,. This just really speaks to me, this one verse. Right here, you hear the desire deflected. You encourage them to listen to their cry.

Speaker 1:

I want to tell you something God hears your prayers. He hears your prayers especially if you're feeling some persecution and affliction and when injustice is present. It can feel as if God has nowhere to be found. He just can. And that's not true, because he's omniscient, he's omnipresent, he's outside of time. He hears your prayers and our hope has to be in that promise. That waiting, that persistent and relentless pursuit of Him to never turn away is what we had to be committed to. What we see is that he is the ultimate source of encouragement and that we have a heavenly father that listens. I'm a. I'm a. Most days I'm a pretty good dad, but I do struggle with something a lot. That's just listening, taking time to listen. I get too busy, right, get wrapped up. We have a heavenly father who never has that issue whatsoever. In a world that we're all fighting for attention for other people, you never have to fight for God's attention. He wants that time with you. He wants to tie more than anything. He wants to spend that time with his children, and when an affliction occurs, he's right there waiting for you to turn to it. That's a beautiful promise, an absolutely beautiful promise that we have as believers. Those who don't have God, who don't have that relationship with Jesus, they don't have this promise and I I don't know how you go throughout your day without that hope.

Speaker 1:

And we see the last verse defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere mortals will never again strike terror. He's going to defend those who cannot defend themselves, and sometimes he chooses to use us to do his work. And we see injustice. He's calling you to do something and you have a choice. The choice is simple Are you going to obey or are you going to ignore? That's the two options you have. Let's just be real Are you going to obey him or are you going to ignore him? And not doing what God has caused you to do is just as bad as doing something you shouldn't do. But I've said this over and over and over and I think it's pretty interesting that he's used his two words earthly mortals. Here we're just blips. We are the good, the bad, everything. It's all temporary. We recognize by this verse that we only get one shot, you do, and if you're walking outside of what he desires, you're going to be punished. And, knowing this, we should all do everything we can to make sure we're doing the good that he desires, and this may mean getting uncomfortable.

Speaker 1:

As you take a stand, as you defend the defenseless, as you stand up for the unborn, because there are so many ways you can do this, so many ways. Maybe you can align with the legislature that protects the unborn, maybe you can volunteer in certain places. You can definitely pray and, most importantly, love those they're in this situation before and after. And then, as my buddy Al talked to me about one time look, you got to be about pro adoption, too, and pro fostering, because you can't be pro life if you're not pro adoption and pro foster. We have a young man in our community named Jonathan. They're moving this path, this is what they do, and I'm so encouraged by him. It just gives me such hope to see young people who are taking a stance and moving forward with that. What are they actually doing?

Speaker 1:

Because you have to recognize right here that each day is a chance to be obedient, to do his will, to follow God, to help others, to share the love of God to others and to take any chance you can to fight the injustice that is all around us, and we see this in this Psalm and again Psalm 10. So spend some time, think about this. Think about what God is calling you to do. What is God calling you to do? How is he asking you to take a stand and then think about are you going to obey or are you just going to ignore it? Are you going to obey or ignore it? I pray you take the step of obedience, because you may you never know On the other side of that step of obedience, maybe a blessing to God has just been waiting for you to see. But you're never going to get there until you take that step. And that's my curse to see you. Take that step today. Where do you see that injustice today? Where do you see it? Where are you going to do about it?

Speaker 1:

I know we talked about some heavy stuff today, guys, and I try to get political at all here at the lion, because that's just not who I am for one. But I can tell you one thing when you see God's Word and you start reading it and studying it, thinking about it, praying over it, talking to people about it. This is an area we can't be divided on as Christians. We have to be willing to talk about it. We also we better not be condemning those who have walked this path, but loving them and sharing them the good news of the gospel to them, because we need them. We need, we need to love them. We need to help them because they may be able to help others who are in the same situation make a decision before they're unborn. So this should not be polarizing. I know it is, but it shouldn't be. Love God. I'm sure His love with others Point them to the gospel.

Speaker 1:

Recognize that God sees the injustice happening and when he's calling you to take a stand, you've got to act. You've got to act. You cannot outsource this. You've got to act and that's my encouragement to you today is take some action. So hopefully, guys, you enjoyed that message. You're feeling charged up, you're feeling encouraged. I hope you come back for the fun Friday. I'm going to give you some more tips around this. I'm going to give you a really good resource for a book, because, well, that may help you. But, guys, I'm just the big thing is just, don't just stand by. Do something. Do something. God's calling you to take action. I encourage you to lean into that and take that action today.
