Is heaven's gate open to all, or does it admit only a select few? We grapple with this profound question through the lens of Matthew 7:23, confronting the challenging notion that entering heaven isn't about having a multitude of options but rather about steadfast commitment to God's path. In an era where choice is celebrated, we expose the resistance to the idea of a singular pathway to salvation, emphasizing that the life of a true disciple is not chosen for its ease but for its authenticity. Our reflections are not just musings—they're a call to action for Christian men to allow the truth of God's word to shape their decisions and leadership, transforming the way they navigate life's complex journey.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I'm your host, chris Granger. Let's jump in. All right, guys, it is meat episode time. I'm excited to have you here. Let's get right into the word. Okay?

Speaker 1:

So the scripture of the week this week is in the book of Matthew and, quite frankly, just so you know, we'll be in the book of Matthew today. That's where we spend all our time. But we're looking at chapter 7, verse 23. Because I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evil. Still hard scripture. Go back and listen to the scripture kickoff. I mean, I highly encourage you to do that. I unpacked that scripture at length, trying to give you some ways to simplify and apply it to your walk. Hopefully that helps you.

Speaker 1:

Okay, but ultimately, what we're going to be looking at today is this basic question do all people go to heaven? And I know this can be touchy. Lots of people have all sorts of thoughts and ideas around this. We need to understand that God's kingdom is reserved to those who obediently follow him. That is a simple, salient truth that I'm not going to vary from, even though it's not popular to say Because here's the world. The world wants us to live by the doctrine. According to Oprah, that's what it is. What does she say? There's many ways to heaven. There can't just be one way to get in. Come on now. So this has got to be this old way of thinking of Jesus as the only way is wrong. Nope, and this is new age thinking and a lot of people out there ascribe to it Because they're thinking of it as like a destination and just like when you're going on a road trip maybe going on a road trip this year and you want to put in a route, you want to put in your final destination where you're going, and that route gives you on my iPhone I'm sure yours as well several different ways. Right, you go this path and avoid a toll. You can go this way and be more scenic. You can go this. This is the more direct way. Whatever you have, you have options. We love options, don't we? We just do, and things like this.

Speaker 1:

Thinking like that is why people get confused on who gets to go to heaven, because people like Oprah bless her heart, all the people out there who think this way. They have it wrong. It's not an open ticket, it's just not. And when you deal with heavy topics, don't just deal with them with words that you hear on a podcast. Don't just trust, because Chris said this I'm going to go straight to the word of God and I'm going to see what the word of God tells us and I'm going to share this truth and we're going to let that truth, his truth, be what guides and directs us, because that's, ultimately, that's all that matters.

Speaker 1:

Now, this lesson. I actually taught this lesson last year and it's at our Sunday school class and my wife at the end of it she was like that was really good, made me think, challenged me. I think you should share this with the podcast. I said, well, I'm down, baby, it's whatever you think. So I was surprised because when I put this lesson together, it's definitely not a touchy-feely, make-you-feel-good type of lesson, right.

Speaker 1:

But at the end of the day, as Christian man, that's what I'm working on. We're not called to that, we're called to some hard stuff. We are so taking a hard look at truths like this, so important, so important. Let's get right in. Let's look at two verses. So we're going to be in the book of Matthew today, okay, so look at Matthew 7, and let's look at verses 13 and 14. I'll just go read them here real quick, then we'll kind of unpack them together. It says enter through the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is broad. That leads to destruction. There are many who enter through it, for the gate is small and the way is narrow. That leads to life and there are few who find it. So most people just don't believe scripture like this. They just don't Because it's 180 degrees from where the world wants you to believe Right. And quite frankly, it can be scary. It can be scary to read stuff like this and start sitting around and really thinking about it, because we live in a world that likes our choices Right.

Speaker 1:

Think about the last time you went to a restaurant. We've already talked about the GPS. Now think about a restaurant. How many options are you putting? It's crazy, right. Or maybe you're in the market for a new car. Just look at all the different features and benefits and colors and options. I don't want this fit. I don't want that. I've got to have the heated seat. I've got to make sure you hit the cup holder over here. All different things, right. Or just clothes. You ever been to a department store lately? Rack upon rack upon rack of different styles, different colors, different things to suit everybody who walks in the store's flavor.

Speaker 1:

But Jesus, he breaks it down pretty simple, two verses, right. He tells us we got two options you got his way or you've got your way, or you can think about it like this you have destruction or you have life. That's really it. And look at verse 13. Enter through the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is broad and leads to destruction. There are many who enter through it.

Speaker 1:

Gates are important. They give us access to places that we want to get to Right. And Jesus does some pretty good comparing and contrasting here. And I'm so thankful for this in his teaching, because sometimes I just need help discerning. I really do. Discerning Scripture can be hard, but he lays out a picture that makes sense because we see that immediate instruction, the immediate instruction to enter through the narrow gate, the smaller one, and it's smaller. Guess what? It's probably harder to find at times. That's his way and we're going to see as we study this further. It's the only way. That's it. Now.

Speaker 1:

Think about a massive gate, maybe just a picture in your mind a freeway, interstate system, biggest one you've been on. Think like 10 lanes each way. Right, this thing is massive. You have a huge gate leading to that. You get on that freeway buddy, you can just roll. Maybe the speed limit is like 90. You're going down the street right, rocking and rolling. Maybe the speed limit is like 90. You're going down the street right, rocking and rolling. There's lots of opportunities to make choices. With that freedom, you can switch lanes as you want. You don't have to worry about getting behind some tractor on that interstate. No, just go wiggle, roll. And with that freedom, what happens a lot of times? Accidents, wrecks. So in general, we all know the inherent risk that comes from getting on an interstate, but we do it anyway, right? Why? Because we've got places to go. We can't be slowed down. It's so much easier to drive fast. Usually interstates are smoother. Usually, at the same time, we can never know if we're on that wide gate, that wide gate, that open, wide path, that we could be literally on the highway to hell. Thank you, acdc. Right, we can Now look at verse 14.

Speaker 1:

For the gate is small and the way is narrow. That leads to life, and there are few that find it. Here's where we get the contrast Small and narrow. Okay, I like small and narrow when it comes to my waistline, right, but when it comes to roads, not so much. And when you look at the Greek word here for narrow, it actually means to press hard again. So now Jesus is telling us right here that his way is the only way, and we can actually.

Speaker 1:

If you want even more proof on that, just look at John 14 real quick. John 14, verse 6, tells us this I am the one truth and life. No one comes to follow but through me. But he is the only way we get that. But in his way it's going to be difficult, press hard against to navigate, and not many people are going to want to do it. Right, why would anybody want to take that path? Think about that for a second. Why would you want to go through the narrow path, the path that's going to press hard against you at all turns? Why would you want to do that? The only reason I can think of is that one part of this scripture where he says the hard, narrow road leads to life.

Speaker 1:

If you've ever been lost before, finally get to that landmark that you recognize, right? Oh, okay, I finally see that you know that at least you're not lost anymore. Now, does that landmark? Does the fact that you see that landmark make the path any easier? No, it doesn't. It doesn't make any path any easier moving forward, but it does give you assurance that now you know where you're headed and that's with Jesus. That's the way. It's not about easier, it's about better, and we need to recognize that from Scripture right here. It's not about being an easier path, but there is a better path with you.

Speaker 1:

So if you start thinking about this, just these two verses right here Barrogates, widegate, the path of the world, what the world desires, the path that you know Christ is calling you to, what's already going to go down, because you may run into ridicule just by picking that narrow game. Dude, what are you doing? There's so much easier way. This is easier over here. Just come over here with the rest of us. Be careful. You have to make a decision for yourself. Are you going to run with the pack, knowing that, literally, highway to hell could be playing in the background and you guys are flying having a great time? That end destination is not somewhere you want to be. Or are you going to choose your heart now. Go to the small, narrow path, the path that's where you rest hard against, because you can choose your heart now or you can choose your heart later. Get to pick these two verses right here. Give you some insight. Now we're going to see next what happens to people who even claim for God while they're here. The scripture is going to give us some good insights. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back and we'll keep digging into this together.

Speaker 1:

Okay, if you're a man who's looking for greater spiritual guidance into how to become a better leader, finding resources that you can trust and then implement can be daunting For me personally. I thought it was a lost cause and I decided to take the action, knowing that I wasn't alone. It was because of this wide gap that we created our line within this community, and the areas that we're helping Christian men grow are incredible. For instance, we built ways for guys to lean in and grow through fun events like our daily spiritual kickoff, where you get that much needed boost directly from God's word, our Bible studies that always focus on how to discern and apply what we learn, and even our amazing forum where you can speak your mind without fear of getting shut down or judged by the extreme rules of modern day social media. On top of all that, we know that many men won't help overcoming issues and becoming stronger in many different areas. That's why we created several mastermind groups where the iron truly sharpens iron.

Speaker 1:

Our community is about having a growth mindset, accountability, intentionality and transparency. In other words, just leave fake you at home and come to community just as you are. I fully believe what we feel. I see the impact it's making on men right now and I would love to have you check it out. So start your very own 30-day free trial today to see how we can help you be a better leader. So if you're ready to take that first step, head over to thelinewithinus and get started. Speaker 1:

So let's dig right into the scripture together. We're going to be looking at Matthew 7, 15 through 20. So we just talked about the gates. Okay, what we're really unpacking today is will all people go to heaven? We need to understand this. We're hitting this hard-on directly with God's word. Now let's read 15 through 20,. Okay, it says Beware of the false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from the thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles are they. So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then you will know them by their fruits. All right now, this is kind of like a big public service announcement. Okay, and we need to think through this, because we chose that narrow gate right, we will start walking through it. Everything from then forth will be reflected in our actions. This is where we got to start thinking about. So let's unpack this together. Let's look at very closely at verse 15, because it talks about beware of false prophets who comes to you in sheep clothing, but inwardly of ravenous wolves. So when someone says to you, watch out, what comes to mind For me, I think about well, I better be on alert, guard up, let's pay attention, I'm locked in, don't get distracted or lose focus.

Speaker 1:

I like going to hunting season and things like this. It's something fun for me. I think it's pretty awesome because I get to wear camo. Quite frankly, I wear camo year round. Camo other than just being awesome, it goes with everything. There are many different styles. At the end of the day, that camo serves one purpose. I don't want that animal to detect me, whether I'm shooting deer or turkey or whatever. Maybe I'm hunting right? I don't want it to see me and I want to blend in.

Speaker 1:

And the same way we sneak around in the woods and not be seen, there are people, people rolling around right now pretending to be righteous and, at the end of the day, they're trying to serve themselves instead of God. I'm telling you, fellas, we see this all the time. They are ravenous wolves. These guys are trying to take you out. They're trying to take your families out. They're trying trying to take you out. They're trying to take your families out. They're trying to take your kids out. They're trying to take you out of work. They're trying to take you out on the freeway. They're trying to take you out everywhere.

Speaker 1:

And what we have to do is recognize that. We're going to see how we recognize that as we dig into the scriptures, but right here, when you have wolves around your sheep, you need a sheepdog to check them, because that sheepdog, he's always looking, he's paying attention, he is on the alert, he's ready. And that's what you have called to do as a leader of your family to be a sheepdog. Can't outsource this. It's not something that you can hire a security guard. Nope, you have to be the sheepdog, you.

Speaker 1:

Now, how do you recognize them? Oh, look at verse 16. You will know them by their fruit. Grapes are not gathered from thorns, thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles are they, he tells us, the fruit. So right, here in this scripture, the fruit of the Spirit hasn't been given yet, but it's cool that Jesus uses another practical example that will connect with the people around him, because fruit was a big deal back in this time. Right, this culture this time it was huge, it's still big today. I love fruit. Right, this culture this time it was huge, it's still big today. I love fruit right, personally, you had things like raisins, you had dates, you had wine, all these things that came to sustain their life, these vines and bushes that produced this fruit. Back then they would have been taken care of. Have you ever done any gardening? Guess what you pull out, you get all the weeds and the thorns and the bushes, all that stuff. You get it out. That stuff would have been trimmed back.

Speaker 1:

And it's interesting to note that Jesus says about the fruit we're going to recognize them, because I read that, as our actions matter, we're not talking about works-based righteousness, jesus, louise. We're not talking about that, fellas. No, we're talking about our actions, about walking with him. That should change our works, because we want to do what he calls us to do. This fruit right here. You will recognize it by their fruits.

Speaker 1:

If you don't see this fruit show up in other people's lives, I'm telling you be careful. Joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. You don't see things like that in people's lives. Be careful. You may be dealing with a wolf. I'm telling you. That is real. They are out there. They're trying to take you out.

Speaker 1:

Now look at 17 through 19,. Fellas, good tree has good fruit. Bad trees bear bad fruit. That's basic, one-on-one. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit. A bad tree cannot produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown to the fire. We recognize this. This is one-on-one gardening. You want good fruit? You better plant some good trees.

Speaker 1:

The best example I've heard lately is if you went to a pine tree and you just nailed an orange to it, right, does that make it an orange tree? Heck, no, ridiculous, because it's at its core that pine tree is just trying to be an orange tree. Right, it hasn't changed. But we surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We are no longer just pine trees with an orange nail to us, pretending to be something that we're not. No, we surrender to Him. We begin to produce good fruit.

Speaker 1:

That's worth getting pumped up about. That's worth getting excited. That's the fruit of the spirit. Right. And for the bad ones, hey, there's going to be a day. Where's bonfire time, fellas, and I love a bonfire.

Speaker 1:

This good old boy grew up in the country. There's nothing like a bonfire. You want to see, get me excited. Light something on country. There's nothing like a bonfire. You want to see, get me excited. Light something on fire and let's just sit around and talk, because Jesus is direct here. It's not to scare you but to make you recognize how vitally important it is to see the right way, to see His way.

Speaker 1:

And right here we see the very last verse. You will know them by their fruits. How do you recognize a Christian? Think about that. How do you recognize a fellow Christian? How would a fellow Christian recognize you? That could be an even harder one to think about, right, because at the end of the day, the evidence in our life of fruit is the only recognition we have.

Speaker 1:

We're not going to always get it right. Don't hold yourself to some standard. I get it wrong all the time. Just ride me to carpool or go to a basketball game or something like that and you're going to see me, a guy that has a long way to go, but for the most part, you should see some evidence in their life of the Holy Spirit moving and their walk of obedience to that. And when you see that you should encourage people, it should encourage you. It's pretty incredible when you see that people actually surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and they're letting him guide and direct them and they're not trying to do anything their own way. I'm telling you this is the difference. This is rubber beating road. This is where we have to truly say okay, I believe this, I can walk this out. If you're a Christian, you know what you have to do and the reason.

Speaker 1:

We're getting ready to read what I consider the scariest part of the entire Bible, and I want to share this with you. Everything up here leading up here has been kind of talking about the why. So now let's get down to the ultimate driver that we need to be aware of as believers. That should move us to action. We're going to take our last break, guys. We'll come right back. We'll get right back into the scripture.

Speaker 1:

I find it helps me to have a guide at times when I'm reading and studying the Bible. One way that helps me is by using devotionals to guide not only what I read, but insights into the scriptures themselves. So we were blessed to become an author on the YouVersion Bible app, and we saw an immediate opportunity to help others with devotionals around the areas that we spend the most time talking about at the Lion Within Us. So if you enjoy the show, you may enjoy these devos as well. We have some guys that are using them as part of their small groups as well, as they're a great way to get conversations going. So to see the ones that we've created. Head over to thelionwithinus slash you version, and that's Y-O-U-V-E-R-S-I-O-N. To learn more. So that's the lionwithinus slash you version to get started with your own men's devotional today.

Speaker 1:

All right, fellas, we're back here now, so let's get right into it. So we've been talking about, you know, will all people go to heaven? That's a hard question to answer. There's not many people who will like the answer. We know the answer. We talked about gates, narrow and wide gates. Then we just spent a lot of time talking about fruit, the fruit, good fruit and bad fruit, how that's going to be pruned out of our life and how that's going to be pruned, ultimately, out of heaven. We're not going to allow bad fruit into heaven.

Speaker 1:

Now let's look at some verses here 21 through 23 of Matthew 7. And I'm not reading these to scare you. I'm reading these to share the truth. Let's read together Not everyone who says to me, lord, lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to me on that day Lord, lord, did we not prophesy your name, cast out demons and, in your name, perform many miracles? Verse 23. And I will declare to them I never depart from you who practice lawlessness, here on my arm, standing up, fellas, this is our wake up call as we're trying to deal with the gravity of what Jesus is teaching us right here. This is our wake-up call In verse 21,. It tells us not everyone who says to me Lord, lord, right, think about this. There's going to be people that you know who think they're getting in but in reality they'll never get because he's. It's a sad reality, it's a scary reality, but he shows us right here he who does the will of my father in heaven will answer we get that. That. We get that. You know what? If I just do what the Holy Spirit has called me to do, if I'm obedient in that, I will enter the kingdom of heaven. But it's not by work, it's by His grace. Now let's look real quickly. I want to share something.

Speaker 1:

In 1 Timothy 2, verse 4, get it right here. It says who desires all men to be saved, come to the knowledge of the truth. That's what he wants. His desire is for us to surrender to him, be obedient to the Holy Spirit. God does not want us to miss this. That's not what he's after.

Speaker 1:

But we do have to take some action. We do have to move. We do have to get off of top dead center and do something and not just sit around and think that you know what. I got time. I'm just telling you, fellas, we have to ask for it. You have to ask it for his will. I mean, look at Matthew 7, 7 and 8. You know, you have to suppose, you have to ask. Don't be like him. Before you follow those, before you ask him, you need to talk to him. You need to say okay, father, what are you trying to show me? Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. Everyone who asks receives. Everyone who seeks finds. He who knocks will be opened. It will be opened. We have to just take that request directly to him.

Speaker 1:

Then look at verse 22. Verse 22 is encouraging to me because many will say to me hey, did the prophesying? I did the casting out of demons, I performed many miracles. What that tells me is it's not about works. If you're trying to do this thing called life without jesus, you're gonna get it wrong, because works are not inherently bad. They're not. They just don't anything to. They just don't do anything for us when we admit the holy spirit. And they're. They're so examples of bible over and over and over again where people did stuff. They just don't do anything for us when we omit the Holy Spirit. And there are so many examples in the Bible, over and over and over again, where people did stuff and it wasn't from God. It's not bad stuff. But if you omit the Holy Spirit, you're totally missing the point.

Speaker 1:

Because if you refuse salvation, what's the last verse say I never knew you, I never knew you. Depart from me. You practice lawlessness. If you refuse salvation, there's going to be eternal separation from God. So how do you make sure that doesn't happen to you? Well, you better start surrendering, surrender to the Lordship of Christ. You better repent, be baptized and you better start doing whatever he tells you to do, because the road is narrow. It really is. But I want to hear you. We should all flip over to Matthew 25. You can hear my Bible flipping right now. Flip over to Matthew 25. Look at verse 21 and let that just soak in right here. His master said well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of me. Enter into the joy of your master. That's what we were desired here, fellas. But you just don't hear that just by hoping. No, you got to put your hope in something and that something is christ. Right and we make sure you don't miss this, fellas.

Speaker 1:

I know we've talked about some heavy stuff on this episode. The ultimate question won't all people go to heaven? The answer is no, they're not. But you have an opportunity today. If you've never surrendered to the Lordship of Christ, then you need to surrender. And if you have surrendered to the Lordship of Christ and you have people in your life that you have questions about, it's time to take some action. Have the conversation. It may be super awkward and uncomfortable, but would you rather be awkward and uncomfortable right now and save them from a life separated from Christ or just live with that reality that you had an opportunity but you never did anything? It's not easy. It is not easy sharing Christ. It's not. You'll get judged. You'll get looked at. You'll get persecuted. People think it's funny. There comes that crazy Jesus guy again. Be okay with some of that. It's done by you.

Speaker 1:

These verses that we just read, matthew 7 they are hard to swallow, they are hardy, but if you take the time, but the Holy Spirit speaking, listen to His Word. When you get hard questions, like when all people go to heaven. You take it and you proof test it against His Word. Then you have that wisdom and discernment. Now you got to do something. You do something with it by sharing it with others, sharing the good news, not because you're trying to scare them to make a decision, because you want to show them to make a decision, because you want to show them truth. You know old Jace talks about how'd you get here. You know we go do while you're here. Now you'll get off. How are you getting out of here? That's three questions he uses to get started. Whatever you use to get you going to having conversations about Kingdom, that's fine, but don't, don't, don't fall into that wide-robed mentality. They're not me.

Speaker 1:

If you have a pastor is preaching that man will think about could be ton of fun on the church. There is only one fact. There's only one way. It's not easy. You will be pressed hard against when you walk with him, but it is better. I spoke about this on the spiritual kickoff. It is better. That's what I want. I want better because I'm not going to try to promise you easy. No, it's no good to try to pull wool over your eyes. It's not about being evil. It's about that. I want you to think about that.

Speaker 1:

Hopefully, stuff like this encourages you. My encouragement to you would be just get into God's Word, spend more time with Him. Don't worry about what I say or what other pastors say. What is he telling you? Get along with it. Be quiet, think about what the Holy Spirit is trying to reveal to you today, because you may read Matthew. Go through Matthew 13 through 23, like we just read. We just looked at 10 verses. You may get something completely different out of it. That's why this word is living and breathing. So use it. So, guys, get out there, share it with other people. Hopefully this helps you. If you have questions about your salvation, look, reach out. I want to hear from you, christhelyofedus, if you have questions just in general on God's word.

Speaker 1:

But we see right now how guys are helping each other, how they're leading in. So I just encourage you to check that out for the guys out there who are listening and want to really take this and start applying these leadership principles to their business, to their professional careers.
