Speaker 1:

In this episode of the Motor City Hypnotist podcast. We're going to talk today, folks, about an approach to therapy. It's called radical acceptance. Think about those two words together. Radical acceptance Sounds rad. Yeah, it is rad. So what is it? What does it mean? How do if you, if you're interested in this and I think this is a good approach for a lot of people how do you do it? How do you practice it? What are the steps? What's it about? So, yeah, we're gonna cover that and, as usual, as we do every single episode we've ever done we give away free stuff. Free stuff is good, absolutely All right, hang in there, folks, we'll be right back.

Speaker 2:

Get ready for the Motor City Hypnotist, david R Wright. Originating from the suburbs of Detroit, michigan, he has hypnotized thousands of people from all over the United States. What is going on, my friends? This is David Wright, the Motor City Hypnotist. We're back with another episode of the Motor City Hypnotist podcast. I've missed you, man.

Speaker 1:

I miss you too, man. We were out for a couple of weeks. It was Martin Luther King Day and then last week I was sick of the dog dude. I was just out, man, like I had no voice. It was just brutal. And then I had to do a show at country day Shout out to country day high school, by the way. I go every March no February, january February for their field day. They do this midwinter field day, so I've done that for like five years in a row. So yeah, big shout out to country day. Always great kids. I would get like 30 kids on stage. It's a blast.

Speaker 1:

They kicked our butt in high school soccer, yeah, well they're a good sports school, you know this where Chris Weber went yes, yeah, so they're Robin Williams, did he? He went to country day, I think. So oh well, that's interesting too. So, anyway, shout out to country day. I had a great time on Wednesday. I made it through, let's say I wasn't feeling great, but we had a great show, so it worked out All right, it's all good. So, yeah, shout out to country day on Wednesday. But yeah, I spent the rest of the week in recovery. Yeah, I was just kind of just down.

Speaker 3:

But you know it's okay to take a few weeks off.

Speaker 1:

Well, sure, I mean, you know we had a holiday and then I was sick. So anyway, we're here, we're back, we're back, we're here on the podcast your Voice, southfield Studios, hanging out. We got the mood lighting going on today Looks good Dun, dun, dun, dun dun.

Speaker 1:

So thanks, folks, for joining us. Let me tell you where you can find me. My website is MotorCityHitlistcom. Check that out. As I've been saying, grad and prom season is approaching quickly. Speaker 1:

Book your grad night or your prom night. Also a heads up I just this week we just verified them back to University of Florida in March for their big show, their dance marathon show A little little warm weather in your future. Yes, at least for at least for an evening, all right Evening. I usually fly in on Saturday, fly home on Sunday, but oh, you don't drive the 24 hours.

Speaker 1:

Yeah right, I'd spend more time in the car than I would in my show. I mean, I mean being there right, because I usually get in in the afternoon.

Speaker 1:

That shows you typically like 9pm and you know I, you know you should get an early flight home in the morning. But yeah, shut out to University of Florida Gators. I will see you in March. Fantastic. No February, no April. I don't know when the date is. It's coming up in the next couple months. You have warm weather in your future. It is April. I just remembered it's April 13th, so their date varies a little bit. That's a, I think that's a Saturday.

Speaker 3:

Is that a Saturday night? Saturday night, it's a Saturday, yep.

Speaker 1:

Yep, absolutely yes. So so check out my website if you need to book show, because, again, dates are going quick. There will be the number Number will be there or go to my website, motorcityhypnotistcom.

Speaker 1:

It's the number that shows on the website. Okay, so it's that easy. Yeah, it's that easy. So the big thing, wherever you're listening, whatever platform you're on, you know, whatever Spotify Stitcher, whatever million of the ones that are out there subscribe, so you get the show when it pops up, that we don't have to look for it, and the biggest thing is leave a review.

Speaker 1:

Yes, that's the most helpful to me. Helps people see more. Yeah, just, it's just like anything else. Like I've said before, it's how I Amazon shop. I read the reviews and I buy. Yep, amazon is a great place.

Speaker 3:

I got something from them one time, one time, just one time, just one time we got packages every day on the porch.

Speaker 1:

So I mean it's crazy, it's totally crazy. I'm very important.

Speaker 2:

I have many leatherbound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany. So yeah, you don't get leatherbound books from Amazon.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, absolutely First edition. Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Well, yeah, ideally it's crazy.

Speaker 3:

Alright, there we go. It's time, here we go.

Speaker 2:

That's how we did is done.

Speaker 1:

Alrighty, okay, winner of the week. Now, this is a little bittersweet and it's a little tough, because we already discussed it a little bit back did the Detroit Lions I have to give a I, even though they lost last night Mm-hmm in the NFC divisional round.

Speaker 2:

I'm NFC champion championship.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you're right the championship last day. They were one of the final four teams in football. If you guys don't follow sports, the last time I'm for last time they were in the NFC championship.

Speaker 3:

Do you know a year that was had to be 92?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, but before then, 57, correct. Yes, that was when they won the championship, correct. Prior, pre super Bowl, pre super Bowl era. Yeah, so it's been a while, but anyway, again, fantastic season Again. Last night was a bit disappointing and kind of you know, it's a little depressing, but kudos for forgetting to, I mean, for a team that was on 16 just six seasons ago.

Speaker 3:

But yeah, okay. So under Dan Campbell's leadership. Yeah, first his first year coach, he was three and 13. Yep, then last season it was nine and eight and then this season, 12 and 5 12.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, 12 and 5. Yeah right. So for technically, should have been 13 and 4. Tactically, take that Dallas game out of there. Yes, crazy, but I don't see incremental growth.

Speaker 3:

You see incremental improvement year over year and you know, hopefully we see a more Improvement next year?

Speaker 1:

Well, well, absolutely. And you can see, the talent is there, they, they built from the ground up.

Speaker 3:

You, got my this Josh Reynolds Excuse me Sorry.

Speaker 1:

Oh no, I got it. Yeah, that's a.

Speaker 2:

Some of my throat.

Speaker 1:

I looked at up in a dictionary today, matt. You know what it showed. What it show showed Stonehands. Okay, we're not gonna dwell on that, but anyway, great season it really wasn't it was. It was different than it's ever been, and I'm an old guy so I've been watching the Lions for 50 something years, so it really wasn't enjoyable. Nice story for this season. So, yeah, and we'll look forward. I. I don't doubt that they'll be back next year, at least competing. Anyway.

Speaker 3:

Yes, they'll be competing, so and we'll have a lot of the same talent that's gonna return Well, and we'll add talent which is the whole point. Yeah, we'll get pit. We got some nice picks. We got what? Two picks in the six round you know this coming draft, which is actually gonna be in Detroit this right, yeah, the summer. So the draft is here, yep. So yeah, there's, there's a lot to look forward to next season. Yeah, but I you know, at the very beginning of the season, the hype around the Lions was so immense, and I think I was telling you this.

Speaker 3:

Yes, we you know, my partner and I, we watch America's Got Talent.

Speaker 1:

Yes, T, T yeah.

Speaker 3:

Terry Cruz is a Grand Rapids, you know he grew up.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, he's growing rapids.

Speaker 3:

native yeah and he came out on that EGT stage in Hollywood and he's got the Detroit line cheerleaders on stage with them. The hype on this team was so incredible at the very beginning of the season. They lived up to that hype and they just became the new Team of America. Yes, yeah, they did yes.

Speaker 1:

Well, and I mentioned you, I think it helped that that hard knocks they were on hard knocks two seasons ago, so that also brought them to the forefront of people knowing the team and the players and liking them, and you know. So I'm with you know, it was a good time in Detroit because, let's face it, we haven't had much to speak about sports wise for many years. No, we have not, and it reminds me of the time growing up, because I was born in 65, okay, and I grew up in the 70s, aware of sports and watching that. But the 1984 who 70s was nothing.

Speaker 2:

They were all bad.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, everybody was. I mean again, nobody was good. No, nobody had a one. Nobody's even close to winning, until a Tigers got to the series in 84. Right, yeah, it took a while.

Speaker 3:

Crazy. Rebuilding does take a while, you know. You build it up to break it down. Yeah, it's been in the military sports, sports ball.

Speaker 1:

So anyway, shout out to the Lions again. It was a good season, we had a good run. It's very, it is satisfying, even though it's disappointing, but again, definitely one of it.

Speaker 2:

Yes that's how we did is done.

Speaker 3:

What's funny, dave, is that the you know, the past couple of months it's been nothing but Lions, lions, lions right this morning. There's a lot of folks going, no one.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's like, yeah, what do we do now? What do we get excited about?

Speaker 3:

Oh well, you're gonna go and get that tattoo laser removed. That you just. Yeah, that's a 2024 Super Bowl champs.

Speaker 1:

Yeah yeah, well, that might have been jumping the gun a little bit. It's crazy. I blame that guy yeah. Yeah, don't get tattoos of anything. A logo would be fine a logo. But don't don't place years and predictions never do a prediction in a tattoo form.

Speaker 3:

That's why you don't get a tattoo of your partner.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly. Yes, that doesn't matter. Yeah, name phase, yeah just yeah.

Speaker 3:

Don't, don't so what are we?

Speaker 1:

talking about Okay today. So we're talking about an approach to therapy Radical, it's called radical acceptance. So so what and I'm just gonna give you kind of a general, my kind of layman's terms, as far as what this is? Okay, it can help it. This helps when people are feeling depressed or have low self-esteem or lack of confidence or dealing with anxiety.

Speaker 1:

So really and there are a lot of things that come from this when people, when people are Self-critical okay, over analytical, or just self critical Self critical, I would say, because I think it's probably good to be analytical, because you can kind of try to be objective with that. But when you're self critical and you demean yourself and you just don't have that self confidence, you kind of see yourself, I don't know, maybe paraphrasing people might think I'm a failure or I haven't lived up to my expectations, or, okay, you know I'm not doing things in life that are important or meaningful, or you know I even made my mark on humanity. You know, there's not a depth as far as what people feel. So the whole, this whole approach to radical acceptance, is just accepting who you are. And a lot of times this is situational based.

Speaker 1:

And when we get into these tenants of what radical acceptance is. It's going to cover a lot of those different areas. So the big thing, as far as what we talk about radical acceptance is, we're working on re framing your thoughts, where you are in the world and what's going on, okay, okay. So number one, we're going to go with number one first. Okay, when you, when you observe that you're, you're fighting reality fighting reality meaning you don't accept the reality.

Speaker 3:

That's a yes.

Speaker 1:

Whatever is happening, whatever your reality is, which means events that are happening or situations that you're in. Okay, a lot of times people try to to try to push that away and think it shouldn't be this way. It's not fair. This, this, I shouldn't have to deal with this. And here's the tough. Here comes the tough love part of therapy. It's just going to happen in life. That that's part of what life is, and I say to my clients often that life is a series of events. Life is a series of events.

Speaker 3:

I just I have five words for that statement. Okay, it is what it is, right. That's just that that's right and it's pure meaning. It is what it is.

Speaker 1:

Well, and I've drawn a lot of different from from this specific, the specific item that we're talking about. I use this a lot with clients because you know a lot of clients will be like, oh yeah, you know, while I did this and I did that, this didn't work out and I said, listen, whatever happened happened, that's, that's history. It's like going back and saying and this is very general but like, oh yeah, I just hated the Vietnam War.

Speaker 2:

I just I didn't agree with it, but go back to it.

Speaker 1:

It's already, it already happened, it's done, it's, it's in the it's a history.

Speaker 3:

It's in the past. April 4th 1955 happened already. Yes, you can't change it?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's, it's. What's done is done. Whatever happened happened 15th 1955.

Speaker 3:

Trying to think back to the future.

Speaker 1:

What was the date? Yeah, I don't. I don't know for sure April 12th maybe, I don't know.

Speaker 3:

But yeah, you can't go back and change it.

Speaker 1:

It can't go back in and to look at a situation and you can. You can remain hung up on this isn't fair. It shouldn't be this way. I shouldn't have to deal with this, but the problem is you do you have to deal with things? That's a part of life and that's part of how we grow and mature as people.

Speaker 3:

Now let me let me add a caveat to that. Yes, you will deal with it, but are you going to take the easy way out when you deal with it?

Speaker 1:

Well, and that that's going to lead into some of these other things, ok, so so the first thing is don't question your reality or fight it. That that is kind of the big thing it's like. Ok, this is what it is, how, what is the best way now to approach this? How, how do I? How do I accept this and then do what I need to do to get through whatever I'm dealing with and make a strategy, create a strategy. Yes, right, so this goes.

Speaker 1:

Part of it is reminding yourself that an unpleasant reality Is what it is and it cannot be changed. Now I'm talking about things that that are beyond your control, right? A death in the family? Sure, you know your dog being hit by a, yeah, yeah, a pet passing away Things, things that are events in life that are not never they're never pleasant, but they happen to almost everyone. Your house burns down yeah, yeah, events. You get a car accident, right, you get fired from your job. Now, that that could partially be your fault, but, but these are challenges, things that happen, sure, you break. That you have to deal with.

Speaker 1:

Yeah yeah, you have health issues, yeah, yeah. So, knowing that the reality can't be changed, what do you do on your end to help you better deal with that reality?

Speaker 3:

That is the big thing. What's the word I'm looking for to navigate that reality? Mm hmm, I use the word navigate because I said the word earlier, strategy. You have to set yourself up for success, right? So that strategy is very important. Ok, I have to do a. A will lead to B, then you'll have B point one, b point two, because you have to prepare for certain things, absolutely. So you have to put it, put it on paper.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, absolutely yeah. You should always have a plan on how you're going to proceed with any situation that would be a challenge or would be uncomfortable or something that that you're you're just down about. Yeah, um, so it is that a lot of times in the reality that you don't want this unplanned or this unpleasant reality. A lot of times there are things that lead up to that that you can look at and learn from Sure. So such something such as a go back to car accident. I know that that's a, that's a very general term, but so I'm going to self reflect for a minute. There was a time when I was in my 20s Um, I think I was out of school. I was out of undergrad, I was not out of grad school yet because I was working at the time.

Speaker 1:

I remember where I was working, ok, and it wasn't intentional in my part, it wasn't like in my head that I had to do this, but but I was a very what what's word? Impatient 22 year old, 21 year old, 20 year old, and I was somewhere in there. So I would often get road rage because I was in such a hurry all the time. Okay, yeah, and I remember having having these, these, these just bouts of like just being so angry and, and at one point I'd had like Three speeding tickets on a matter of four months. I had eight points on my license. Hey, you're living large.

Speaker 1:

I was, in a way, I was kind of a terror to myself, sure, and other people. Now I can look back on this now objectively and be like what an asshole, yeah, but then You're in what you're in, you're, you're not so, so. So I'm going back to car accident now. I didn't. I didn't at that point, at that point in time, I didn't have an accident, but surely was more possible than because of the way you were, I was driving and the way I was responding to things, it made that bad event much more likely to happen. So I can, what I can do is I can, after the fact, I can learn from that and modify behavior based on the reality that was okay, so you were blaring DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Speaker 3:

You saw my blinker.

Speaker 1:

Bitch. Yeah, probably I could have been who knows I mean so angry I couldn't think about it. You know that would have been one for the fuck are you doing?

Speaker 3:

Hey, that guy that I was that guy in the car, all the time.

Speaker 1:

Oh wow, yeah, yeah, it's crazy, yeah, so so. So there is a way to to learn from unpleasant history, as long as it's self-imposed or self-done. Now, some things you can't control, like we said, sometimes your reality is what it is. I know a lot of my clients right now are very anxious about news events. Okay, politics, war, yep, and that's a natural thing.

Speaker 3:

So, but let me, let me ask the question there. They're concerned about it, but is it affecting them personally? It it's on the others, the the war, the Gaza, the Gaza strip. No, I agree.

Speaker 1:

I agree, and unless you have relatives or somebody that you know that that's different. I think people just get caught up in the worry and that's the whole thing, because I've told clients I'm like, listen, I, I understand you want to be a Well, how do I put it? An upstanding citizen or learn. It's innocent. Okay and know what's going on in the world and in politics.

Speaker 3:

And of course you wouldn't you see need to stay up on the current affairs, but if you get it to a point where it's affecting you mentally, that's and that, see, that's the key.

Speaker 1:

And I say to people I Understand that you want to be a responsible citizen, but if it's causing you anxiety and grief and depression, then you need to pull back. And here's, here's what I'll say If it's something really important, you're gonna know about it. Sure, even if you're not into into the news or social media or internet every day. If something's really important, you're gonna know about it. Yeah, it's, it's not gonna like you know, unless you're living in a bunker and you have a contact with anybody, you're gonna find out about that. That's part of what happens. So, reminding yourself there are causes for the reality and changing that when you can, okay. So here's, here's where we start to say, okay, reality is what it is, even if it's self-caused, I can adjust that.

Speaker 1:

But but things happening like death in the family, that's part of life. Losing a pet, having a terminal illness, that that's a huge one. That that you know, I'll throw it out there. Going going through a divorce, going going through a divorce, I'm something traumatic and major like that. So here's, here's what has to happen, because a lot of times people blame themselves for these kind of situations, especially like if you get a divorce.

Speaker 1:

Oh, what did I do wrong? Was I the bad, you know? Should I put more effort in? Should I've done this? Or or even if there's even guilt when you lose a pet? Yeah, because even in my head went when I, when our, when our pet passed last March or April, it was always well, should we got into the vet earlier? Could we have done something sooner? Could we have medicated them to give them another year or two? But the whole thing here is you have to start practicing accepting what is and when I say accepting, that's very vague in general. What does that mean? But I want you to think about this with your whole self, which would be mind-body spirit. It's like. It's like just saying this, this the situation is unchangeable. So Now I'm gonna put my full self into dealing with this and trying to be happy in spite of the situation. Fair, yes, so we're, by doing this, by start to practicing accepting yourself, the whole self. We're talking about self-talk, modifying yourself, talk. We have this internal dialogue that's constant in our heads.

Speaker 3:

What are you doing? You're an idiot.

Speaker 1:

What are you doing? You're an asshole. Why'd you do that? Oh, you failed on this. Oh, you should have done this better. I'll go even further. You should have studied more.

Speaker 3:

I'll go even further. What do you want for dinner? I don't know.

Speaker 2:

What do you want for dinner? I don't know.

Speaker 3:

What do?

Speaker 1:

you want for dinner. But it's starting to do this, accepting self-talk and working in things that help you to relax and kind of withdraw from the noise, if that makes sense. So mindfulness techniques, everything, relaxation exercises, guided imagery A lot of things that are involved in hypnosis, a lot of those things. It's just redirecting your mind to a more positive place.

Speaker 3:

Can I share with you something that I did personally to help me get? Through some of the tougher times in my life. Yes, music, music, that's another outlet. It was when I quit smoking. I moved to music to help me do that and it was that relaxation of the, my type of relaxation music. It wasn't someone screaming, it was that ambiance, you know, house type music with a really, really nice beat, soothing beats. It just relaxed you.

Speaker 3:

To take my mind off of wanting to have a cigarette, I went back to music. You know, when I went through another life changing event, music has been my go to.

Speaker 1:

And that is a great escape for people, either people who play music or listen to music or any other art form, painting, hobbies, whatever. Whatever you enjoy doing, it's getting into that and releasing your creativity and getting into the positive part of your brain. Get your Bob Ross on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, absolutely. Paint a tree, yeah, make sure it's a happy tree. A happy tree, yes, absolutely. So here's here's. Here's a great exercise. Yeah, and I'm going to say this twice because I want you to get it List all of the behaviors you would engage in if you accepted the facts and your current reality, mm, hmm, okay, I'm going to say that again. Please do List all of the behaviors you would engage in if you accepted your current reality and the issue and then engage in those behaviors as if it's already been resolved. Right.

Speaker 3:

So don't stop living Right, but in its most infant, you know infant term, just don't stop living Right and in and focus on the positive part of living.

Speaker 1:

That's the key thing, uh huh, because it is easy to get bogged down on the weight and the pressure of all these negative things that are happening or or events that you are struggling with, or or self doubt, or self negative, self talk. Sure, that can just just weigh you down. So at some point, you don't feel like you deserve change, you don't deserve to be happy, right? So yeah, so I want you to list the behaviors you would engage in if you accepted the facts as they are, yep, and then engage in those behaviors as if this issue has already been resolved, mm hmm, I know this sounds counterintuitive and it's difficult for some people to get past that point of just being, yeah, but it's not resolved, it's still there and that's like no, but that's, that's kind of.

Speaker 1:

That's the hard part is just saying you can't change that, so let's focus on what you can change.

Speaker 3:

Resolution will happen if you put the effort into it. But don't let that oh, it's that resolution, don't let that resolution become most the most important thing. Right, right, yeah, don't say OK, I'll start. You know, healing after no, start healing right away, right, right.

Speaker 1:

So people get caught up in this, this, their own mechanics of their own mind and how they think, and a lot of people will say, well, I'm not ready to change yet, I have to get this, this and this in order. No, I disagree. Yeah, I exactly. That's why I'm saying it, because they'll say, well, you know, I don't know. Oh, I want to stop smoking, but I need to get these things in order so that I would be more successful at it. That's not how that works. No, granted, I will give you if you want to get things in order to be more successful, but you're just putting off what you know needs to be done. You're still smoking. Yes, so let's, let's just implement what we can right now and get that done.

Speaker 1:

So, yes, and let me let me focus on that one, one more time List all the behaviors you would engage in if you did accept the reality and then engage in those behaviors as if you've already accepted that reality, mm. Hmm. Ok, I like that. So we have some more facts to cover folks on our subject.

Speaker 1:

Right subject matter radical acceptance and some more things that are going to help you, and then then I can. I can give you some specific guidance as far as what. If you wanted to practice this, where would you go? How would you do it? What are some specific steps, and we'll get into that too. All right, on our next episode, which will be radical acceptance, part two. Ok, before we go today, you know who's still there, and I didn't know this until Matt told me right before the show started. Yeah, detroit Dog Rescue. These dogs need a home. Yes, they do. Cupcake is back, and I didn't realize Cupcake. We did Cupcake recently. Yeah, because I saw him on the site and I'm like oh, look at that. Actions female. Well, her name is Cupcake. It's a lab mix. She was born January 2023. So she's a pup? Yes, she's not, she's just a year old. She's so cute. Yeah, look at that face. I just love the name Cupcake. You want to see Cupcake up close?

Speaker 3:

Matt, I see Cupcake. She's such a pretty girl. Aw, I want to bring her home.

Speaker 1:

Oh, my camera's not on. Look at Cupcake, your camera's not on.

Speaker 3:

No, it is not. Look there's Cupcake yeah.

Speaker 1:

So Cupcake, detroit Dog Rescue slash adopt Check that out. They got a bunch of other dogs too, and I know we usually highlight a couple of them during our episodes, but Cupcake still needs a home, and if we did it, I don't know it had to be at least three weeks ago. It had to have been yeah, so Cupcake's still waiting as of today.

Speaker 3:

Cupcake needs a home. Cupcake needs a home. So don't anyone that's on the Facebook Live don't go anywhere. We will be back Facebook Live stay there.
