Ham Radio Productions

We travel out to Jersey City to talk with Don Vogt, a co-owner of 902 Brewing Co.. Recorded on the brewery's rooftop, Don shares the fascinating journey of 902 Brewing Co., from its beginnings as a gypsy brewery to establishing a physical location in Jersey City. He discusses the inspiration behind their transition from hobbyists to business owners, citing the success of their Black IPA in competitions. Despite challenges with permits and funding, their persistence paid off, leading to the opening of their taproom.

Throughout the conversation, Don emphasizes the brewery's deep roots in the Jersey City community. He discusses their commitment to supporting local businesses and shares favorite spots around the city. Don also highlights 902 Brewing Co.'s role in Jersey City's cultural and economic landscape, reflecting on their pride in contributing to the vibrant scene of their hometown.

The discussion delves into various aspects of the brewery's operations, including their approach to naming beers after local landmarks and collaborating with organizations like the American Legion. Don shares insights into their plans for expansion, touching on potential future facilities and their focus on community engagement.

Listeners gain an inside look at the unique atmosphere of 902 Brewing Co., including its surprising family-friendly vibe where parents often bring their kids. Don underscores the importance of getting people to visit their physical location, as many are still unaware of their taproom's existence.

0:23
all right what up welcome back to another episode of GRA from the Garden State powered by the New Jersey Lottery I'm Mike cam we're here at 902 Brewing
0:28
Co in Jersey City with Don Don welcome to the show thank you for having me absolutely so this is pretty cool like
0:34
we're on the roof there's not I feel like there's not almost enough rooftop spots in New Jersey I don't think so I
0:42
think we're were one of the few breweries actually have rooftop I believe I think one or two other ones maybe yeah and so you know right down
0:49
here in Jersey City you can see the New York City skyline which is pretty awesome pretty cool yeah it is pretty
0:55
cool uh so let's talk a little bit about 902 uh Brewery obviously how long you
1:02
guys been here in this spot cuz I know you were in Hoboken first right we we've been our brand has been out for about 9
1:09
years now um we're Gypsy brewing for four to 5 years um then in March of 2020
1:16
we got our Co for here basically the same week to go I shut everybody down so obviously perfect time perfect time you
1:23
know uh you know this show business was going great so we said we need our brick and mortar we took about a year and a
1:29
half two years to BU build this place out and um of course shuts down we have
1:34
think of all this generated this Revenue going to come in from the tap room and of course you know shut down but hey we're still around four years later um
1:41
so we've been here for 4 years now um and we're still kicking yeah so what's uh Your Role here um I'm technically CFO
1:50
um I run the Tap Room sales um so a lot of so basically everything yeah me and my partner split up a lot of the tasks U
1:56
he does a lot of the websites and production end of it um I had a bill side of the business yeah and so when
2:02
you guys kind of like put this concept together like what why why Brewery um
2:09
what were you guys what were you both doing beforehand he's an uh he's an engineer he was with the engineer with an army um my background is in
2:14
accounting um so he was doing home brewing and it was tasting good one a
2:20
few competitions he um our Black IPA was winning most of those competitions we put that out about once or twice a year
2:27
now um You Don't See many of those out there so they winning competitions and
2:32
we said can we really try to make this a business and here we are almost 10 11 years later yeah took two years with the
2:38
state to get everything going and then N9 years in actual business you know so like you said 2012 was when F 14 14th we
2:48
started doing everything in 12 or paperwork 12 took about two years with the state cuz it say's very fast on
2:55
doing things um so 14 um kind of was a long yeah that's like pretty early I
3:02
feel like for Jersey breweries because we've had you know a few breweries on in the past and uh I feel like 2014 like
3:10
mean were you guys like one of like the first 50 out there we were one of the first that were out there yeah yeah
3:15
that's pretty cool and so I mean I imagine like kind of seeing the like trajectory of how kind of the brewery
3:22
the New Jersey Brewery like different hurdles and different things that they've had to face I mean even now like the stuff that they just fixed you know
3:29
like a big that's a big one that's a big one back then that was like it was really hard to get a brewery off the ground it was it was it wasn't easy um I
3:37
think we did it I like the way we did it compared to um if we open the brick and mortar first I don't know how if we
3:43
still be around right um having the dro business doing the Gypsy Brewing was
3:48
able to get our brand out there getting people to know who we were uh we knew we were doing something well the beer was good um so we said yeah let's bu let's
3:56
let's build something yeah at this time and we that's what we said let's build yeah and so who was like the first
4:01
person to be like we should open up a brewery cuz I mean you could do like home brew contests and different things like that but as as you now know
4:08
definitely por Kobe yeah he definitely and like how did he convince you to go along with that it it was easy it was
4:14
you know be was good you know that's that's the hardest thing is you know when you have a good product it's it's
4:19
easy it's makes it a little bit easier you still got obviously all those hurdles out there getting into people's hands and stuff like that but the point
4:26
of um making good beer and then the real obviously a real decision was make
4:31
building this place out um six years ago building this out been here for two years
4:36
before that was the real decision maker is building this Gypsy Brewing was easy
4:41
you're not um financially as invested in it sure but now you got to be able to
4:47
buy the tanks you got to buy The Brew equipment you buy to buy you know build out a tap room you got to build out that's where the cost of money comes in
4:53
that was the harder thing we had two partners at that um prior to building this out it was a little too much for
4:58
them to uh time wise and um to to do to do that um
5:03
so they kind of walked away at that point so Kobe and I been here where did the the Gypsy Brewing come from like the
5:11
name uh you go to different different breweries do do our beers okay gotcha yeah yeah yeah Brewing BR Gypsy Brewing
5:18
right and then uh so when you open up this place is when you kind of almost like rebranded I guess into 902 is that
5:25
how we've always had always been always been 92 I'm sorry 902 comes from 902 in the street that's where gotcha home
5:31
brewing started that's where the um the whole concept the whole concept came in yeah okay so so uh at what point so like
5:39
you're you know obviously the just doing Dr basically at that point only yeah and
5:44
then the idea comes like let's have a tap room you know like like an actual physical place where people can come
5:51
taste the stuff you know like enjoy it buy stuff directly from us essentially corre um was there like a a critical
5:58
mass kind of that you reach at that point we um it was going well it was selling well um we looked at the numbers
6:06
made sense at the time um it still makes sense now obviously um the pandemic didn't hit but it would be would be a
6:13
lot better but a lot of things would be a lot better exactly um so yeah so we you know the numbers were looking right
6:19
um we actually contract Brewing at two different locations okay so we doing it a bunch of different places and we
6:26
thought it' be easier just to bring it in all together have more control Gos in place with ourselves doing it um and
6:32
again the tap room um open up that tap room again if the pandemic didn't have we would have open the tap room and
6:38
everything would have been absolutely perfect rolling right into the open place up this J was going great and um
6:43
Tap Room were thing yeah so just time wasn't wasn't there for us yeah and so
6:49
uh when you're you have the idea for The Tap Room obviously like and I didn't realize this I was interviewing another
6:55
very kind of like early I was interviewing twin elephant Brewing Company this is like last year about and he told me and I didn't realize this
7:02
but like a tap room is kind of like if you want to break down like the revenue streams the tap room's kind of where
7:08
it's at for at least for them you know 100% obviously the markups are there we
7:13
charge our beer same thing as our distal clients do we you know we don't want to our neighbors O's Harry's daughter they
7:20
borrow beer from us so we can't undercut them either you know you know even though it cost us the same amount to make sell it to them to us we try to you
7:27
know we're all Community here and we try to solo prices to the community yeah and so you know as you're going through this
7:35
and you know you find this space like what was the space prior to you guys burnt out um upholsteries Place burnt
7:43
out even better it was burnt out had no had I think I had a half a roof on it first I think the first time I walked in the building I walked in I slipped on
7:51
pigeon [ __ ] and fell I said you know what we take you this [ __ ] space she my leg a curse and apologize that's okay
7:58
it's a show about New Jersey like you if I don't curse it's not me yeah so I pitch [ __ ] and um we said
8:05
we're going to take it and you know was good location we um hopefully development starts soon we if we figured
8:12
at this point there would be developments around us so he empty lots think they're ready to go for something they're ready they are ready to go again
8:19
pandemic slowed a lot of things down um so might got a movie studio down a block that comes over here a lot C Le Studios
8:25
uh they they're talking about expanding their footprint as well yeah um so you know new buildings coming up
8:32
so it's just it's a growing area and that's what we saw downtown city is great we love going downtown but to
8:39
build a facility 7,000 ft 6800 ft downtown the course wasn't wouldn't been
8:44
there um you know I feel like even like this kind of space too like if you do at
8:49
some point want an opportunity to kind of expand a little bit like you do have that and if you're downtown you can't
8:57
yeah I would imagine like Ren's probably a little bit better here than it is probably a lot a lot better um and so
9:03
when you guys are kind of like putting together almost like the concept of that buildout M who was kind of like driving
9:09
that and like what was kind of the vision for like what you wanted a place where people can come in feel comfortable you know like the rooftop
9:16
obviously comes into play too which is dope this was part of our original design um was the rooftop having people
9:21
up on here having beers up here seeing the view the city obviously you got we got beautiful Statue liberty straight
9:27
ahead of us uh as well um you can see better in the winter when the trees just start blooming it's not that I'll tell
9:33
you about the trees are a real buz especially in this city exactly um
9:39
but yeah so what's you call the the view the atmosphere the Jersey City's community is unbelievable um food
9:45
industry here the you know people like try different things we have artists here all the time we do an art expo kind
9:50
of once a quarter now we were doing it once a mon during the summer last summer we might bring that back but bands are
9:57
great here so all those different things are helping us yeah so you've mentioned this a couple times and like we're all
10:04
about community-driven stuff because that's literally what the show like this is episode 128 and so and it's also
10:09
coming out my sister's birthday so we'll shout out my sister so shout out happy birthday Nicole Happ but uh so the
10:17
community thing I think is a really interesting piece because one of the things that I've noticed from The Branding and what you guys do here and
10:22
then kind of going around in different spots in Jersey City like you always see 902 that's like a that's one thing that
10:28
you always see especially around the Jersey City area so talk to me about like kind of the importance of the
10:34
community supporting what you guys do Beyond just like buying your beer but then on the kind of the flip side too
10:40
like you know you mentioned a couple things already with like artists and different things like what was kind of like the early you know yeah so I'm
10:46
originally from Jersey City born in Jersey City um so you're like a Die Hard Jersey City guy Jersey City's you know
10:52
is where it is at you know D just w w the national championship again for us um it's a Jersey City thing so but um
11:00
when we were building this out right next to Kevin from o Harry's daughter uh
11:05
Alistair and Ria came down and spoke to the community about us and dealing with us so we all work together this in this
11:13
city uh we do Night Market um in the market they do food festivals down there um we work with them well we're involved
11:20
in the hurle um hurle Family Foundation yeah we we we do beer for Coach Hurley U
11:26
Hall of Fame basketball coach um and you know we just try to get involved
11:32
as much in the community as possible here um great art community here great music scene here um so we have local
11:38
artists um and Bs that play here at least once a week um and they they
11:45
support us and just you know it's great it's a great very for a big this probably my opinion the biggest city in
11:50
the state where I know sentence might say different yeah say New York is but
11:56
city is the biggest um it's a small community it's a very very
12:01
small community J City community and I think it's it's a um people want to see
12:07
each other toed in this in this city you I don't see anybody try to harm another business in in this area you know um so
12:15
I love it it just Jersey City city how much more can you say say Jersey City
12:21
that's what it's all about you know it's got to be pretty cool for you too to be like a Jersey City guy kind of watch
12:26
this like incredible Renaissance evolution of Jersey City over the last however many years and then kind of be a
12:32
part of that too right it's it's it's a great feeling um it feels great it's
12:38
please I left here for a couple years um my younger years and I I told my parents
12:44
when I can I'm moving back and they're like okay you're going to do that left college and within soon as I left
12:50
College I was back back in Jersey City yeah where College West Virginia okay so that's like wao that's like a totally
12:56
different totally different vibe system yeah yeah so and it's and I um so you
13:03
know Jersey city is Jersey City it's just it brings you know you go anywhere
13:08
I go anywhere in this country I meet somebody from Jersey City you go Florida me some somebody from Jersey C North Carolina Texas you just run for somebody
13:15
that either family was from here or lived here at some point in their time yeah so there's nothing better than
13:20
Jersey City yeah okay now I have to ask outside of here like what are your favorite spots in Jersey City cuz I mean
13:27
that's like what we do I was say look going L's doing yeah yeah
13:32
yeah shout them out for sure um what you call it um I like this te downtown they
13:38
they don't carry our beer so I still like them though um what te the food is always delicious
13:44
down there um green hook food is great down there um what else we l going to um bota bones
13:53
great great barbecue that's brand new right nework is that yeah uh Kenny did a
13:59
great job down there um the food is unbelievable uh we try through house now
14:04
sorry you leave some out I always leave somebody out you know uh Leos great Italian food one of the the oldest
14:11
Italian place in Jersey City um another great spot to go to we lost a lot of our old places Cante a lot of the old old
14:18
school pinis old school Italian food places uh we lost a lot of those over the last couple years but um yeah those
14:25
those my CL two spots yeah yeah the male Performing Art Center is the heart of arts and ENT in Morristown New Jersey
14:30
impac presents over 200 events annually and is home to an Innovative Children's Arts education program to see impac's

15:34
Eagle Hall cuz that's like the big reason why we're here yes you know um which Co used to exact practices used to
15:41
right that's that's what we do here so for the segue portion of this episode um
15:47
you have the you said you have the coach Hurley beer which is called Hurley Hoops hoops and hops and hops um I'm drinking
15:54
uh chilltown Crusher I just had a heaven hell Hoboken you got the Mexican logger
16:00
Mexican logger all right that one doesn't count but uh it counts I think path's going to be there path path yeah yeah path is going to be um but what I
16:07
think is interesting and like what I love about just like local breweries is like their ability to kind of tie in
16:14
their Community into their branding and so was that a thing that like out of the gate you're just like oh we're just
16:20
going to like keep kind of tying these together because obviously they all have certain 100% my father worked for path
16:26
um so obviously path that's one of the names of path came around um hurly hoops
16:31
and hops obviously named at the coach um Pacific Highway block we're on uh
16:37
everything we try to tie into the community as much as possible yeah um so yeah definitely definitely plays a role
16:43
we have different ones out there that don't um you're killing me Smalls I mean that's just you know Springtime baseball
16:51
what's better um yeah we try we try to make the names kind of fit the community
16:56
and and stuff like that yeah it's funny because like so had I don't know if you know choose New Jersey they're like an
17:01
organization that kind of is like the marketing armor of the state and I had their CEO on and they work directly with like the governor's office and all that
17:07
kind of stuff and he lives in Hoboken uh and he was talking about the heaven hell or Hoboken beer and uh like that kind of
17:14
connection was that World War II right one Persian told the troops are either C
17:19
of Heaven hell or back in Hobo so we do a lot with the American Legion in hoken as well um they're building 18
17:27
apartments for veterans out there so every year we actually do we actually going do two things this year but um the
17:33
last couple years we've done a benefit to raise money last year the Bayon um American Legion actually donated 100,000
17:39
to the hobo get one um rais another 30 or 40,000 just in event that day to
17:45
build those apartments for those for the troops that came back the veterans that came back that fell in bad bad times and
17:51
need a place to stay what's great about their facility is that they um it's not
17:56
when you get back on your feet they lot of these places kick you out at that point you can stay the the rest of your life basically if you need to um you
18:04
know they want to turn it over but if you have to stay the rest you want to say life you can um so it's one of the
18:09
the groups you work with a lot in the thing um but yeah it's hav h and that's
18:15
and they have a big and they're they have a bar in the American Legion up there and there big sign have just just
18:23
the idea of that kind of like freaks me out just to be like told that as I'm going to war um let's talk about like
18:29
the the logo too because I think that's interesting also like where does the was a hammer and a Hammer Hammer now
18:37
railroads yeah you know out path you know um Hudson County had I think the
18:43
most railroads in the country I one point you know all the docks coming out uh into the Hudson River so all the r
18:49
tracks and that's kind of where it felt came behind yeah you know yeah so uh
18:54
when you're kind of like you have the dro business then you have have the tap room now like do you kind of like look
19:02
down the road at all or you just kind of taking it like day by day sort of um we're looking down the road we looking
19:08
expand into different states right now um you know Tap Room um maybe do another
19:14
facility potentially at some point um in Western Jersey or or northern Jersey um
19:20
or maybe another state depending um on laws and stuff like that some some of
19:25
the states have let it little better about Garden State you know but yeah we
19:32
um we did talk about putting maybe like a farm through house to do or larger
19:37
beers chill town of paths or having a core three to expand those those lines a
19:43
little bit Yeah so okay cool so uh so there are some plans and then I also
19:48
think it's interesting to like the three cores and then like how often are you guys kind of like rotating the rest we
19:56
have two to three different beers come out of month uh we can is pretty it's a that's a good amount yeah we can every
20:01
about every 3 weeks right now um so we normally have one or two cores on that
20:07
or one or two core beers and two um rotating beers U some of them are
20:12
repeats some of them are not yeah so they most of our beers do we do at least once a year maybe twice a year depending
20:18
on you know on the beer is it crazy the thing too like you know so this whole concept kind of gets started in 2012 I
20:25
think we said and then it's 12 years later and we've seen a lot of things happen since then the business kind of
20:32
grown quite a bit is it like crazy to think back to being like your buddy coming to you be like hey let's start a
20:38
brewery and now you actually have one and it's dope like it's got this cool space it has the rooftop you can see the
20:44
city like there's all these things happening you know you're in bars that you kind of like in some sense grew up going to there's a handful of them isn't
20:51
that isn't that crazy to like kind of like wrap your head around crazy when people go I want Inu you the owner he owns a beer and people like you own a
20:57
beer company that's that's it's amazing you know you know you make you make this stuff I go yes I do you know this is
21:03
work right now we're working we um that's a great part of you know I've you know I'm an accountant um in my
21:10
background I I've done real estate I've done Property Management um but nothing's more fun than this you get to
21:16
have a beer and you call work you know and and and again there's a lot of people don't realize how much work is
21:22
behind the scenes that go on at breweries yeah the concepts of making the labels the merchandise all those
21:29
different things build gra gra concept but at the end of the day you can sit down and and taste what you you made
21:35
yeah you know so it's it's a it's a great experience what's what's the process like for you guys to have those
21:40
new beers come out like who's kind of the driving is it uh we we we do a monthly meeting we did that with our
21:45
team um we try to plan out about 3 to six months in advance um and we we try to see the trends um obviously right now
21:53
a lot more loggers are going obviously we talk about 2 years ago 3 years ago you s more of the IPA
21:59
uh even when we we first started no one was really doing loggers at that time um 10 years ago and now I our best sellers
22:06
are all loggers and just they just kill it and we we we're doing like six or seven different loggers a year now
22:12
besides our core um besid chilltown so um seeing the trend and changing um of
22:19
everything is the biggest thing right now yeah and I guess like you said I mean it kind of really almost like
22:26
relies on the community that's coming and buying the stuff like what are they buying you know and then kind of almost
22:32
like tweaking it I guess in certain cases or you like bring back like fan favorites at any point we do like um our
22:38
juicy City we we do about that's a good name we do two three times a year it's definitely juicy it's our hazy it's it's
22:45
our core hazy IPA um yeah so we do that about three to
22:51
four times a year um it is a fan favorite um we only have we have six fermentors right now uh one bright so
22:58
it's kind of hard to have four cor beers going at at one time so that's one was on the outlier that that happens more
23:04
times a year but like our kill me Smalls we do every year baseball season comes out um or we do a beer called to
23:11
tailgate to beer to tailgate to beer to fish too you know we have a couple of little Concepts like that that come out
23:17
annually um those are great you know for us yeah and so I also think it's
23:23
interesting too because you have talked about it a little bit but um on the event side like you the cigar event
23:29
recently that I really wanted to come to actually like one of the guys that's playing jerseyfest was here for the this
23:36
guy Reese he's like long ha he been re for a while he actually works at a cigar shop as well yeah yeah yeah yeah um so
23:43
like talk to about that part of it too because I think that that's especially now that that stuff has changed we missed it but we do it again April 19th
23:50
thank God wait wait when's April 19th April Thursday okay good all right thday I'll be here um but uh yeah so I think
23:57
like like that stuff too I think is like a great way to kind of April 18th April 18th even better cuz I have something on
24:02
the 19th um like that stuff too is like a great way to kind of change it up do
24:07
different things especially now with kind of the the way that the events and
24:12
all that is like the restrictions on that is kind of changed does allow you to kind of do different things and
24:18
explore different possibilities so like what are some things that you've done that you're like really proud of and
24:23
then what are some things that you you want to try to do yeah the score night was a great night we uh had a lot of
24:28
people here we actually teamed up with a local cigar Jersey City Cigar guys for that as well um we've been doing we did
24:35
actually three three labels for a local artist um
24:40
Mozart um Forsaken and Clarence Rich we did actually label for them they did
24:46
actually live um art on the rooftop here cool actually for S the because it was
24:51
po R um quite raining that night but um we try did actually M up here his um
24:58
water tower one of the water towers back here has a Statue of Liberty on ahe yep um that's his that's his that's his art
25:04
oh cool so those were fun ones um we've been doing DJs every Friday night we do a DJ here um most Brewers don't have DJs
25:12
and we we got a lot of good feedback from that they're saying um they don't they don't see that
25:18
they don't they don't see that we do obviously we have Wednesday nights we do acoustic Wednesdays um on the week
25:23
Saturday nights we try to get another band here as well so we're trying to get all that going and you yeah yeah it's
25:29
got to be tough too because it's like like you want to like line those things up the right way and you know you want
25:36
to make sure that that people that are coming you know cuz Brew is got this interesting thing now because it's become almost like a family vibe to a
25:43
degree and some cases so our s that's that was the weirdest thing to me we opened up and people started coming and
25:52
people brought the U play pant for the kids and I'm like I'm looking at the camera I'm like I call my one the step
25:57
I'm like is that a play pen in in in in the T room yeah yeah it's family what they they they're here all the time they
26:03
brought play pen for the kids so they could uh I'm like okay that's that that that was the weirdest concept our
26:08
Saturdays and Sundays um afternoons it's all families it's really it's I think
26:14
that's pretty consistent across most breweries I won't say all cuz I know a couple that are not that way but with
26:21
they come with his strollers they walk down a block they come you know sit up there you know play pens in the dab room
26:26
I'm like okay you know so again obviously with the Law changes now being able to have all the
26:33
drinks for the kids there have before is a drink for the kids and these kids now
26:38
we have Capri Sun down there and um different little IC teas and stuff like that that we can actually sell them and too that can helps but um yeah that was
26:46
that was the strangest thing to me was the all the kids that actually come to a bir I have a three-year-old or
26:51
four-year-old and I never think about bringing them to a bre but yeah since having here I had to rethink I guess
26:58
yeah we go out to breweries like a decent amount me and my girlfriend and we have no kids but like if we go out in
27:03
the afternoon and there's kids we're like oh yeah Brey so we we got some sometimes deal with kids which is fine
27:09
bring your bring your kidsing kids drink as long as you're drinking that's that's much driving just walk to stroller home
27:15
exactly walk to stroller home let the kid drive home honestly um awesome so
27:20
this has been really cool I really appreciate you jumping on real quick easy type of thing um what are some
27:26
things that like if people don't know about 902 that you like want them to know about your brand your Brewery uh
27:33
like when they do come out like what should they be looking for what should they do again um just come out to the
27:39
Brey um yeah one of the things that obviously opening this place up in March of 2020 people still saying oh we didn't
27:46
realize you had a actual place right at this point that's our biggest hurdle we've been uh thing everybody see like
27:53
he did you say you saw our tap lines downtown they go oh we didn't realize you actually had a bur injury City yeah
27:59
so that's that's been our hardest thing is trying to get people into The Tap Room learn the tap room and that's
28:04
probably our our biggest goal for this year is to get people to know that we have a physical location um go out to
28:11
all those restaurants that carry our beer but come come on the to of come see Su caright come to see some of the music
28:16
shows come see the artists that come out here um that's our our biggest thing this year yeah and I do love that you
28:22
guys like you do the events and you like the you said the artists and the bands and different things you have come out
28:28
are like the Jersey City Y you know and that think that's what you guys are all about which is one of the things about
28:33
your brand and what you guys do I think is really cool and like The more I've learned about it the more I've come to
28:39
kind of like respect that because that's what we do but just across the state you guys are doing it like right here in
28:44
this community so if people want to learn more where should they be going to learn more go to um 902
28:52
