Recent floods in the United Kingdom have led to debates within the country on its flood protection policy. Experts from the Netherlands, a country often seen as the standard to follow on flood protection, are involved too.

Comparison between the Dutch and the UK situations can help explain how differences in water system properties, economic development and ideas on national security result in different flooding policies and patterns in the two countries.
