Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Z Michelson Travel Podcast. This podcast is devoted to the travel industry. Z says let your imagination run wild and start dreaming about where you want to go. And dream big, reach for the stars, and if you only get to the moon, at least you enjoyed the trip. Your guide to travel is Z Michelson, a travel advisor, and sitting at the controls is Jay Lawrence, your concierge of podcast travel. Now here's Z.

Speaker 2:

That's me, that's me, I'm Z.

Speaker 3:

Did they bring your coffee in for you?

Speaker 2:

My tea. Of course I have to have my tea. I'm a teetotaler, I have my chai tea. I just love chai tea.

Speaker 3:

Chai tea. And you know what happens to me, what happens to you smell that stuff and it goes, oh no, this is your tea.

Speaker 2:

Oh my god. The funniest was when you accidentally took a sip of my tea. Yes, you had like nine faces that that time. Oh my goodness. Yeah, because you like your coffee and I like my tea. Yeah, yeah, but I understand that your wife loves tea oh, yes.

Speaker 3:

Yes, she's a teetotaler, yeah, but she doesn't not she doesn't do the chai.

Speaker 2:

No, yeah, the chai is a little strong, uh-huh, now that's okay that's okay that's okay. So here we are, drinking our tea and our coffee, and I want to let everybody know we are brought to you by collage travel media network which creates streaming radio, podcasting and travel information and that's why we're here we're podcasting, we're podcasting and then for 24 7 music music.

Speaker 2:

There's collage, travel radio which we're both on yeah, yes we're both on that funny, they keep us busy, right, they keep us busy because we are basically the morning crew on collage travel radio yeah and then, of course, we have zmax radio dot, live bingo, which is more music intense of the 60s, 70s and 80s uh-huh you know just the music you love to sing to and grew up with, grew up with.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you want to hear again right.

Speaker 2:

It creates the collage of memories for you.

Speaker 3:

yeah, yeah, no, yeah, no, no, that's yeah.

Speaker 2:

Too many collages, a lot of collages.

Speaker 3:

How did you ever come up with this word? Collage?

Speaker 2:

Well, because it's a blend of everything. Yeah, when you look at collages, it's life and pictures and memories. It's a collage, and then travel can be fit in right in there, right of course because you've got travel memories yeah yeah, yeah, but today's topic we're going to talk about cruising, because you know me, I love cruising talking about collages you could put some together there.

Speaker 2:

Boy, you said that and my mind just went to the ship I was on board you're on board walking on there now, oh yeah yeah, and I have been asked a lot lately are cruises still going strong? And the answer is yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, it's stronger than ever and more and more ships are being built and new ports of call are coming out, they're emerging and something extra special I want to let people know about. But, I'm going to talk about that a little bit later in the show oh yeah.

Speaker 2:

Now, Jay, I remember years ago you never wanted to go on a ship. I know, I know what were you thinking.

Speaker 3:

Well then, you took me on a couple of ship tours.

Speaker 2:

Right, I took you on some of the tours.

Speaker 3:

So you see how well they're put together and what all the amenities are.

Speaker 2:

And then you went on a few of those little things by yourself. You went on some trips, you know, with your people, and you went on these trips and then, finally, I got married. And then you got married and you know, both of us were on that ship together. But now, coming down the pike, you have something coming up.

Speaker 3:

Do you know that that time a week I got married and we were on the same ship together? You know you always talk about drinking, you always. That time I got married and we were on the same ship together. You know you always talk about drinking, you always I've got to have a drink and I'd always said you know, I've never seen you drinking. And funny thing is, we both sat down at the same bar and had a couple of cocktails and had a cocktail.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so you actually got to see me have a cocktail. I think it was two cocktails, but that's okay.

Speaker 3:

And she was straight. I mean, she wasn't wobbly at all, no, she was doing okay.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I don't like to overdrink, because then you miss the excitement of what you want to do.

Speaker 1:

Right, it's just nice. Right, it's just nice casual drinking Right but.

Speaker 2:

Jay you have for the Alaska experience you betcha because that trip is going to be so much fun and you are going on a beautiful ship which is like top notch high luxury, and you are going to have to talk about it when you get back, and that's in September, if I don't miss my guess?

Speaker 3:

Yes, it is. It's in September of 2024 when we're listening to this, in 2028.

Speaker 2:

Right, so September of 2024, jay is going on an Alaskan cruise, so if you're listening in 2028 to this podcast.

Speaker 3:

Go back to the episode, episode number 42 on cruising.

Speaker 2:

Right, or then go to the episode that we're actually talking about it when you come back. Yeah Right, is this back to the future? But Alaska is a great place and there are so many ships that go, but the one that you're going on is going to be very unique. It's not a very crowded ship, which is nice. It's going to be going to a lot of nice ports of call for you and it's going to be top line luxury.

Speaker 2:

That's what I'm looking for you are going to have a really great time and, from what I understand, you're going with your sister and her husband as well. Yes so that'll be very nice. That'll be a nice little family thing. So now let's talk about the first question on everyone's mind.

Speaker 3:

What is the first question on everyone's mind?

Speaker 2:

A cruise is booming. Well, I thought you answered that yeah, and yes, they really are. Now, in 2023, there were 14 new ships that were built, wow, and some of them are immense. Where do they have room for? I don't even know. It's like I'm wondering if it's going to be traffic jams on the ocean soon. Yeah, like the new Royal Caribbean ships, the Icon of the Seas, the Utopia Icon, is the biggest ship at sea. I'm going to say, right now, right, because how long?

Speaker 2:

you know that's going to be a question yeah, because every time I turn around they're making a bigger one and then the bigger one. These ships carry over 9,000 passengers, wow. And then you figure in the staff oh yeah, you know, and that's like a city, that's like a floating city, duh, staff. Oh yeah, you know, and that's like a city, that's like a floating city, duh, yeah, yeah, it's just that's a lot, you know.

Speaker 2:

So I, you know, I've toured some of these bigger ships uh-huh and you know, I know how many people love these big ships, because there's a ton of stuff to do on them, right, uh, and yes, they're great for family reunions. I would recommend, if you're doing a family reunion, pick one of these bigger ships, right, because everyone can do what they want. You know they one person can be surfing, one person can be rock climbing, and then everybody meets for dinner and talk about what their their day was like, right, and when I tour these ships, I'm definitely in a pair of sneakers, because when they're in port, they come in and, I kid you not, I have a little watch that marks my steps and I walk close to five miles just walking around the ship for that one day, oh, wow, yeah, that's a big ship Right and you just don't think you're doing it.

Speaker 2:

No, I mean, you just keep going and going and going and you know there's so many things on these ships that you don't realize. You know you've got the restaurants and you have the areas for adults only and you have, you know, the kids areas, hot tubs, swimming pools, ice rinks. Yeah, how many swimming pools are on one ship? You know that's it. A pickleball is on a lot of ships. I went on one ship that had bumper cars.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, bumper cars yeah and it's like and one ship I believe it's carnivals has a roller coaster, uh-huh I you know it's kind of scary and then we saw a royal caribbean ship that had I'm going to call it a bucket that goes up in the air and flies out in the air. Yes, it's a quantum class. And I was on that I went on the bucket, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

It's pretty cool, it's pretty cool.

Speaker 2:

You go away. It's about 300 feet up in the air If you're afraid of heights. And I felt bad for this one person that got on with us because they said I'm afraid of heights and I and they, basically, you know, I put him in the middle so he couldn't look down. Oh wow, so he was okay looking straight out, but if he looked down, forget it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, why would you go on the thing with that Right? Why would you?

Speaker 2:

want to go on it. I loved it. I took pictures, my husband and I were on it and I, you know I love to look down, but I'm from New York City, so skyscrapers yeah, so that was nothing. To me it was fun, very fun. Now if, if you're at sea, it will swing out over the ocean, but if you're in port, it won't go out over over the port. It'll stay up above the ship. But so it's pretty cool. So think about that when you're going on.

Speaker 3:

Did you do it in port or we?

Speaker 2:

did it in port. Okay, because it is an extra charge if you're at sea, they charge you extra for these and yes, there are some ships that will charge extra certain activities. Oh yeah, so you have to know which activities they're going to charge oh, you know the other one.

Speaker 3:

I was thinking of the. Uh, you can go, uh, surfing. You know that's the royal caribbean ship, they go surfing and I wouldn't do that.

Speaker 2:

Um, my husband and I were watching these kids do the rock climbing wall and it was like, yeah, I still wouldn't do that. My husband and I were watching these kids do the rock climbing wall and it was like, yeah, I still wouldn't do that either. And again, that puts you back into that bracket. Is this something that you want to do? If you don't want to do that, don't go on these ships, go on other ships. I was just thinking celebrity yeah, so you got celebrity. But I'm going to talk about the industry. With all of these new ships coming in and there'll be a few more coming next year we do have more coming in. Even canard lines added another ship to their family wow, yeah, and cannot. Hadn't had anything come out in years, right. So cruises are definitely booming and expected. In this year of they're talking, 35.7 million cruise passengers are expected Wow, right. So 2024, there's going to be lots of people traveling. Now I get asked a lot Does it get cheaper as they get closer to the sale date? Can?

Speaker 3:

I get it cheaper. I've seen those ads. Oh yeah, yeah, Book, now you know.

Speaker 2:

And the answer is no. Oh no, the closer you get to a sale date, they are not going down in price.

Speaker 3:

What would you recommend?

Speaker 2:

I recommend that you contact your travel advisor immediately when you decide to go on a cruise, because they can guide you into what ship you would want destinations and find you the best deals possible and any promotions that might be associated with that cruise line. All right, so book early.

Speaker 3:

So you're saying early and you save money.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, book early, save money, because if you're trying to get like last minute deals that you think are last minute deals, yeah. Uh, not happening, you know, and it's, it's a, it's a sad thing.

Speaker 3:

It's a sad thing Jay has this issue.

Speaker 2:

What issue is that, Jay? You have quite a few issues, but which one is it?

Speaker 3:

Is there a medicine for it? I want to go sailing, I want to be on a cruise, but you know we're booking 2025, 2026 cruises.

Speaker 2:

Right, some cruises are booking way out Thinking so far ahead just blows my mind.

Speaker 3:

I know it does, but you're getting good deals, you're getting good deals.

Speaker 2:

You're getting good deals. Yeah, you have to book ahead. You know it's really very important to book ahead. I do recommend that when you talk to your travel advisor, you talk about refundable deposits, if possible. I also recommend that you talk about insurance travel insurance vital, vital, vital, because things can happen you book three years out or two years out and, oh my gosh, the week of the cruise you break your leg and now what? You want to get some of that money back, and so insurance is best deal with that as well. So keep that in mind.

Speaker 3:

Now we're talking about all these big ships. Do we have smaller ships? Ships too.

Speaker 2:

We do. Another thing I want to talk about is the smaller, what they call boutique style ships. Now, we're not talking rowboats. These still are fairly large. They have about 2000 ish passengers. They don't have the rock climbing walls and the surfers and the roller coasters on board, but they have great food, they have great entertainment venues and they're comfortable so you can navigate the ship really easily. One of the ships that I I like to go on and it's called kind of a they refer to it as a yacht, a yacht style, which is virgin voyages. Uh-huh, now, I've been on virgin voyages and you're calling out a boutique, a boutique style ship.

Speaker 2:

Um, it has things to do. Um, you know, it had like giant size chess chess boards on on board and things like that. So it has little things to do, but it had some great food, which was fabulous. It was easy to navigate around the ship, you know. Know, you knew where you were. You know, some of these larger ships it's like where am I? How do I get back to my stateroom? But it was easy to get around. The passengers were great, the crew was very helpful, the ship was modern and, like I said, they had a lot of great customer service and the food was yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy.

Speaker 2:

So again, when you're going on these little boutique style ships, yeah, figure out where you want to go and then tell your travel advisor and let them know. You know, I don't want a big ship. Now they even have smaller ships. Well, yeah, smaller ships, they have like what they call yacht cruises. They also have sailboat cruises like windstar, um, which again are smaller ships, and the smaller ships can get into smaller ports. Right, so the bigger ships can't get into a lot of the ports? Yeah, you know, you have to be. You know you have to be far away or you can't get into that certain city, like the greek islands. They can't get into all the greek island ports of call, so these smaller ships can. So if you really want to tour the Greek islands, opt for the smaller boutique style ships or these yacht sailboat types.

Speaker 3:

I want to go back to Virgin, please.

Speaker 2:

Virgin, I have a question.

Speaker 3:

You said I haven't been on the ship and I wish I had Right. I missed that. You missed it. They have a giant size chess board, Giant chess board. Do people play chess? Is that it?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, people do play chess.

Speaker 3:

But I mean, are they people playing the characters?

Speaker 2:

No, no, no. It's actual big pieces. My husband and I played a game of chess on board. Yeah, I lost, but I gave him a run for his money, but it was. I want to say the pieces were probably. I'm not a small girl, I stand almost 5'9" and the pieces were probably up to about my hip.

Speaker 3:

Okay so they were nice-sized pieces that you were moving around. I would like to get the who's the guy that puts everything together.

Speaker 2:

You know, the ship guy that puts the guy that owns the place. No, no, no, no. I was going to say Richard.

Speaker 3:

Branson, the entertainment guy, you know.

Speaker 2:

Okay, have him Make an announcement, we're going to have a chess game and you can be a part of it. You can be a piece, you can be a king, or you can be a queen or a bishop or a rook, or a little pawn, or me.

Speaker 3:

I'm just the pawn.

Speaker 2:

Right, so that was fun, fun, fun. But before we get into another piece of information about cruises, that's my traveling trivia music. Oh no, and this is a good one. What is the least visited country in the world? I don't hear you. I don't even hear you breathing, jay. What's going on? What?

Speaker 3:

is the least visited country in the world. I got to figure. I'm thinking of countries.

Speaker 2:

Think of all the different countries and this one I even had to look up myself Because I've never heard of it.

Speaker 3:

Oh, you've never heard of the country, never heard of it. Well then, how could?

Speaker 2:

I Now, if I asked my husband, he probably would have heard of it. And there's a reason he would have heard of it, because it had something to do with World War II.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and I'm thinking it's.

Speaker 2:

I'm giving you hints here.

Speaker 3:

I'm thinking of it's like not. It's not like a Bosnia, but it's something like that. It's in that region of the world.

Speaker 2:

Nope, you're on the wrong side of the earth.

Speaker 3:

So it's not European.

Speaker 2:

No, oh, I see the smoke coming out of Jay's ears. Let me know when you give up, jay.

Speaker 3:

I give up.

Speaker 2:

Okay, the country is called Tuvalu and it's spelled T-U-V-A-L-U. It's an island country in the Polynesian sub-region of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean, and it's halfway between Hawaii and Australia. It was used for planes to land during World War II for the Americans and the British.

Speaker 3:

I was just going to say do they have an airport?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's a British Commonwealth, oh, and the official language is English. Oh, cool, yeah, so it's called Tuvalu. It's an island country and it's, you know, kind of Polynesian and, like I said, halfway between Hawaii and Australia, and it's a of Polynesian and, like I said, halfway between Hawaii and Australia and it's a British Commonwealth.

Speaker 3:

Okay, think about it. I'm going to ask you this question.

Speaker 2:

I don't know if I'll know the answer, but go ahead.

Speaker 3:

When can we book a trip to there?

Speaker 2:

I'm going to have to find out that sounds like the place to go. I mean, it's a small island country and, like I said, it had a lot to do with world war ii because of you know, because we had japan and we needed places to land and all that, and I don't think I'd ever heard of it. Neither did I until I found, you know, found this question, and I said where?

Speaker 3:

what is this? What is your source for these questions?

Speaker 2:

I'll never tell, so there you go all right yeah, and I just, I just love you. Know, I want to go to hawaii.

Speaker 3:

That's on my bucket list well, if you get to hawaii, I think I'd rather go here than hawaii well, you have to go.

Speaker 2:

It's a stopping off point because it's between hawaii and australia, so it's further into the ocean. Oh, you got to really get in there, probably.

Speaker 3:

You'll probably go to Hawaii and get on a small plane and then go over to Tuvalu.

Speaker 2:

Yes, but again they speak English, which is nice, yeah, all right. Okay, so now let's get back to some of these cruises, shall we? I would like to. Okay, now, I know nobody, or I would probably do this, neither you or I.

Speaker 3:

What's that? What's that?

Speaker 2:

But there are clothing optional cruises out there. What, yep, yep, clothing optional, oh my goodness. So how?

Speaker 3:

does this work? Yes, how does it work?

Speaker 2:

Well, first of all, what I found out is that it's not necessarily the ship line that is doing it, but a company that charters and books these cabins for their clients who have this alternative lifestyle. And I know that there are clothing optional beaches around the united states and, of course, the world. I personally have yet to visit one. What about you, jay? Have you?

Speaker 3:

visited any clothing optional? No, I have not and what about your wife, because she travels a lot no, she does not, but she's so cute, she's so cute, but she's so cute, but she's no, no, no.

Speaker 2:

She's not going to bear all for anybody, not anybody. Well, now that I've tickled your taste buds a little regarding clothing optional, let's do a traveling trivia tip.

Speaker 3:

I think the traveling trivial trip.

Speaker 2:

Say that three times fast, Jay. Should be keep your clothes on baby well, since we're talking clothing optional yes, guess what you're going to need and pack in your bag what sunscreen oh yeah it's going to be very, very important, particularly on those clothing optionals.

Speaker 2:

Oh, yeah, also, make sure you check to see what sunscreen is safe for the coral reefs. Oh, because some countries, even hawaii now, won't sell the sunscreen that's not safe for coral reefs. Oh, wow, yeah, the higher SPF offers higher protection. However, the difference is little. So, for example, if you do an SPF 50, which is usually what I do yeah, protection offers 98% protection from the UVB. Okay, yeah, protection offers 98% protection from the UVB. Okay, if you go to the 60, it also filters out 98 of all the UVB rays. So what's the difference? Very little.

Speaker 2:

Like I said 70% offers 99% protection from the UVB absorption. So between 50 and 70, you know you're a safe bet. So look at your SPF, look what you need to be utilizing, make sure you get sunscreen and make sure the sunscreen is coral safe, because they will not let you use it in hawaii or some of the other countries like australia that have coral reef issues so I put it on when I get ready to go in the pool right, put it on when you're going out to go in the pool.

Speaker 2:

Right, put it on when you're going out, I go in the pool. And then what? When you come back and dry yourself off, slather some more on.

Speaker 3:

Oh, my yeah Okay.

Speaker 2:

Because you're washing some of it off when you're swimming around. You know, chlorine water, salt water yeah, make sure you put more on. And again, same with children Make sure you get an SPF safe for the children to use. So you want to look at all these things. You know, I do have my sunscreen that is coral reef, safe and 50.

Speaker 3:

Very good.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Well, that was a nice tip.

Speaker 2:

Yes, sunscreen for those people that are going to have that alternative lifestyle.

Speaker 3:

Or maybe not.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, okay. So I don't want to leave you in suspense anymore, jay, why, if you haven't heard it before yes, the Norwegian cruise line, the ship is the Pearl Mm-hmm and it will be clothing optional on specific sailings. Oh, wow, yeah, it will sail in the Caribbean.

Speaker 3:

The company that has charted the ship does many clothing optional vacations oh, now do I call you and say I want to get on the pearl, and you go oh wow, hey, here's a great opportunity which one do you want?

Speaker 2:

which cruise? Which cruise date do you want to go? Well, the name of the clothing optional company is called cruisebear. Now I've checked them out. I looked online at them. They have a great website because they do more than just cruise optional clothing. I don't know much about the company, but the rules when sailing are clothing optional, such as dining. When you're in a dining venue, you need to be clothed. Oh, that's good that's it.

Speaker 2:

You have restrictions on picture taking. I should hope yeah, and it is limited to certain areas. So they have, like, certain areas that you can take pictures of you, your spouse, your buddies, all hanging out in the nude. But you have to make sure you have to make sure that that's the area that you can take your pictures in. Also, if you're leaving the ship, like if you're going on an excursion OK, a lot of these places will have nude beach excursions, but you must be dressed to disembark and embark, so you have to have your clothes on to get on and off the ship, even if you're going to a nude excursion.

Speaker 2:

Keep your clothes on to get on and off the ship even if you're going to a nude excursion, keep your clothes on, baby, keep your clothes on. So right now, the norwegian ship is the pearl. It's being nicknamed the big nude boat. The big nude boat, uh, and I kind of looked at some of the pictures and it was very tastefully done, yeah well of course yeah, the pictures were tastefully done.

Speaker 2:

Yes, you know the women's women's topless. And you know the men's were bottomless, but they were, you know they. They recommend that if you're going to be by the pool and things like that, that you lay your towel down on the lounge chairs so you cover your. You know, bare bottom does not hit, so they have some etiquette to it.

Speaker 3:

And I believe some of those would turn me off.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's kind of tough, you know, if you're not used to that. I mean, my husband and I were one time out in South Dakota and they have the Sturgis Rally which is bikers, you know motorcyclists. They have the Sturgis rally, which is bikers, you know motorcyclists. Now, a lot of the women you know like to pull off their tops. You know, and feel the breeze in their bodies.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And we were staying in a particular hotel and a group of bikers drove up with their family and the ladies were topless. You know, I don't have a problem with it, you know some people do you know it's like topless. You know I don't have a problem with it. You know some people do. Yeah, you know it's like hey, you know I have what she has, so I don't care, but um yeah so I mean, they came up and they were chatting with us.

Speaker 2:

We had a great time, you know. We were sharing. They had a hey, we got a couple beers. Have one, you know. So it is a nice relaxed situation and I think people that are into clothing optional can do a nice relaxed situation, right, and I think people that are into clothing optional Can do a nice relaxed situation Right, and don't let it be a hang up, if that's your issue.

Speaker 2:

Exactly.
