Hello and welcome back to Living the Way of Mastery. I'm Jason Amoroso, your guide and friend and fellow student. Let's have some fun today as we dive back into Lesson 14, the Wise Use of Time, section 3, an Exercise to Develop your Awareness. Coming down the home stretch and we pick up in Paragraph 23,. Yeah, where Jeshua says, as we come to the end of our second adventure into the way of transformation, notice what thoughts, what pictures, what items you have chosen to write into your journal. Notice the feelings that are occurring in the body even now. Notice the feelings that are occurring in the body even now. Notice the thoughts, the pictures and the images that you may hear echoing through the field of the mind. Just a nice little reminder as we complete this second section are you using the journal? The journal is a tool to get the most out of this teaching, to expand your awareness. Again, we are being invited to go from theory to practice, to mastery Theory, the ideas and the concepts and understanding them to practicing them, of course, where we like, any practice, we fall, we make mistakes, we learn, we make more mistakes, we grow. Things don't seem to be working, we learn. That's the practice of it. Chop wood, carry water, just show up and put it into practice in your daily life. Your daily life is your ashram and that leads to mastery. So I actually talked about this in our last group of the way of transformation. So we started a whole new year and we're in month one of lesson 13. So we're doing a lesson a month and we talked about this idea of mastery from the book and I've talked about in the podcast before the book Mastery by George Leonard, who is an Aikido master, I think in the 70s and I think he wrote the book in the 90s.

Speaker 1:

It's a great little book. I call it a bedside book or a bathroom book because it's small. The chapters are short and you can kind of pick it up and read a few pieces, get some nuggets and then put it down. Mastery by George Leonard Check it out and he talks about one of the biggest principles in mastery is learning to love the plateau.

Speaker 1:

The plateau is that line, that that the plateau where we put in the effort, we put in the time, but nothing. We don't seem to be gaining any progress. So when we first start out a skill or we first start to learn something, usually we see like a little bump in progress that keeps us excited, that says, oh wow, I can get better at this. So let me put in some time. We're playing the piano and we're starting to learn our scales or whatever skill you can apply this to, and so we see a little bump in let's just call it a bump in progress, so it keeps us going. And then we put in a little more practice and it might take some time. And then we see another jump or bump in skill. Oh, this is cool.

Speaker 1:

And then at some point the plateaus seem to be getting longer and it seems like we're putting in the same amount of time and energy and effort but we're not seeing the results. And that's where most people get discouraged and they will quit. They'll move on to something else more interesting. Or this is to this being on the plateau and not seeing progress is too discouraging or it's too hard to. You know, I want to get better at something, and that's actually where, and so we give up, or we we divert our attention to some other new skill that's more interesting, or that we can get the dopamine hit now, right, Like science now is showing us the chemical side of this. When we see a boost in something, we get the dopamine hit and it feels good in our brain. So we want more. But then when we stop getting that same dopamine hit, the brain wants it somewhere else. That's why the modern technology is mastering this. Where it's social media, it's phones, it's shorter and shorter attention spans because and we're training ourselves.

Speaker 1:

I told this with the I used to work with the professional athletes of the San Diego Padres, these young men, and focus is incredibly important in high performance. And I would say to them yeah, you know focus, they know focus is important. So how do I focus more, especially when I'm, you know, in my head all the time? And I said you have to train your focus. So we would do things like mindful mindfulness meditation. We would do other exercises to train their focus. But you might do mindfulness meditation 5, 10, 15 minutes out of your entire day, when, for hours and hours and hours especially for young people you're on your phone, you're on Instagram, social media, snapchat, whatever it is, tiktok, and it's like 15 second videos and and you get a quick dopamine and then you want the next one and you swipe and you swipe and you swipe and I don't know the data on it, but it's like you could swipe through hundreds, if not thousands, of like new stimulus in an hour. It's crazy.

Speaker 1:

So we actually are training our attention to be less and less and less and less. And now there's this whole thing around. You know who reads books anymore? Because they're so long and they can seem so boring for the younger generations most likely. And our entertainment that we consume is the same way. Less and less people are watching movies. My kids don't even watch movies, they watch youtube. And so it's just this. We're training in attention, if that's the right word. We're training ourselves for short attention spans. It's like the opposite of mastery.

Speaker 1:

So when there's any, when there's no progress and the brain's not addicted to that cheap dopamine hit, it gets frustrated and looks for it somewhere else. That's why porn is so addictive, because it's like you know, back in the day a man might see, you know, a few, a few naked ladies in his lifetime, and now you could see a thousand naked ladies in five minutes if you want to. And the more that we get something, the more, the more mundane it becomes. And then we want variety and that's why these things just kind of escalate and snowball out of control and they can lead to and I'm not just talking about pornography, I'm talking about anything they can lead to really like perverse and different things that really don't feel you know. It's junk food for the mind, it's junk food for the soul, whether it's, you know, watching crap on TikTok or pornography or anything. It's just junk, but it's but.

Speaker 1:

But our brain is addicted to the dopamine, looking for the next thing, and so I'm bringing all this up because of mastery and we didn't get this deep in our on our group call about this but it's like Mastery is learning to love the plateau, to love putting in the time and the effort, chop wood, carry water and loving the process, even when the results don't seem to happen when you want them to. Results don't seem to happen when you want them to right. I wasn't even going to say even when the results don't happen right away, when the results don't happen when you think they should and you want them to. You trust you just keep showing up and putting in the work, and the people that do that develop mastery and they have extraordinary skill, but they also have extraordinary patience and they appreciate the time and the commitment and the dedication that that it takes to become a master, a master not just proficient, but a master at anything, and so this is what we're on the path for, and this absolutely applies to the spiritual pursuits. Oh, this isn't working. I'm not. I'm not seeing or feeling anything right away when I do the meditation from lesson 13 or lesson 14, nothing seems to be happening, because I've done it for five days. So I don't really think this works. Let's move on to the next thing. How about doing it for five years and then making the decision and then evaluating if it's not working or not? But most of us don't want to wait five years and we want and I'm in, you know, I'm in the business of selling services and products that I think are valuable to people, and so, as a in that world, it's like there's so much teaching around help people get the results in less time with less effort.

Speaker 1:

It's like six minute abs or seven minute abs or whatever it was that came out in like the 90s and 2000s, right? Oh, if I could get a six pack and six minutes a day, sign me up for that. And that thing made millions of dollars and so many people bought it. And how many of those people got six pack abs? Probably like one percent%. I would guess a very small percentage, so it's.

Speaker 1:

And then in that movie, something about Mary, when he picks up the hitchhiker and he's like six minute abs. What are you talking about? This is five minute abs. I'm doing five minute abs. I'm just going to outsell the seven-minute abs with five-minute abs, and so it's the same thing with spirituality, with anything. It's like what can get me the fastest results, quickest, with the least effort? I just want to get there. I just want to hack my way there. That's why you'll never hear me use the word you want to hack on whatever, a mindset hack or a spirituality hack, like who wants to be a hack, who wants to hack their way to something, because that stuff never lasts. And anyway, when you call someone a hack, it means they actually aren't very good at what they're doing. They're not a master. You would never call a master a hack and I don't think a master would ever hack their way to becoming a master. So, anyways, rant over, but the idea is showing up with your journal, putting these things in. That was a 10 minute detour, but the point is, jeshua is giving us the path, the way.

Speaker 1:

Have a journal, a transformation journal so that when you do your studies you're writing down the thoughts that come through, you're reflecting on a passage that stands out to you. And I did that today and I'll share what happened for me, the insights that I had, that had I not had the journal and I just kind of read it, I would not nearly have gotten the same value and the same transformation internally, the same insights. It's an insight, it comes from within, and when you see something differently, your whole world can change. Most of us are taught you got to behave differently to get different results, which is true, but you're not going to behave differently consistently if you, if your mindset doesn't change. You can do all the quote unquote right things, but if your mindset is in lack, you're going to experience lack, no matter what actions you take, even if you're.

Speaker 1:

You know many millionaires, people with tons of money, generational wealth, money have a lack mindset. It's crazy. There's Because their mindset hasn't shifted. So a lot of people are like, oh, when I have the money, I won't have a lack mindset, so let me have the money first and then I'll change my mind. I'll have the evidence to change my mind and we know that that's not how things work. We know it's a mind shift first. It's a shift in perspective first, and then aligned action with that new perspective creates an entirely new reality. And the funny thing is, is the reality, the external change in our environment and circumstances? We don't care as much about it because internally we've already made that shift.

Speaker 1:

We know that the evidence happens first within us and our decision and our choices, and we see it and speak it and act it, then just into expression. And the expression, the environmental change in your bank account or your working environment or your relationships, is just the effect of the inner seeds that you've been cultivating. It's an inside-out world. 99.9% of the world is either brainwashed or asleep, or whatever word you want to use without judgment, in that they think it's an outside-in world and they're trying to constantly change the outside and hope that the inside changes, that they feel differently. And it never works that way. It just doesn't throughout the course of human history, and we've all been there, we've all tried it and at some point it does not work. So, with that said, we are on the path to mastery. Use your journal. You see it as a tool. Use it as a tool. So here we go. That's what Jeshua has been talking about.

Speaker 1:

Let's move on to the next paragraph, where Jeshua says you abide nowhere but in the infinitude of God's presence. Mastery comes when, finally, you choose to release all attachment to fear and, in perfect surrender, you release the dream of the dreamer itself and allow the mystery of life with a capital L to live you without obstruction, without fear, in perfect knowledge that I and my Father are one. There is nothing I have to do to get God. There are only some things to be released so that God can get me so beautiful Again. This teaching takes all the pressure off. It's like it's already here, it's already done. Relax, you don't have to try so hard. You already abide in the infinitude of God's presence. Why? Because God is life.

Speaker 1:

Anything that exists, anything that you could even imagine and think of, exists, maybe not necessarily in the physical domain, but it exists. If it's a thought, if it can be thought of, it exists. So anything in existence is of God. There's no outside of God. Omnipresent, omnipotent, not powerful over everything, but omnipotent meaning the only power, the all power, and omniscient, all intelligent, all knowing. Then you're a part of that. The ego tricks you and tries to make you believe and feel guilty, the tiny mad idea that somehow you're not, that somehow there's all of creation and you're outside of it and because of that you're missing something and you've got to go find it out there. Of course we know you'll never find it out there because you can't find it out there, because there is no out there. So relax, relax, even in your spiritual efforts, relax, you're already there. Let a part of you reinforce this idea. You're already here. Be here now.

Speaker 1:

And he says mastery comes when, finally, you choose. It's a choice. It is a choice to release all attachment to fear. And you notice how I'm big on language. You notice how Jeshua says mastery comes when, finally, you choose to release. He doesn't say you choose to release all fear, because fear is just a thought, it's just an interpretation. No, you're releasing your attachment to fear.

Speaker 1:

We all have fearful thoughts that pop in. But again, if we allow those thoughts and we observe those thoughts and we don't invest in them and hook ourselves into them, they have no effect upon us. Oh look, there's a thought of fear. Oh, look, there's a thought of I'm worthy. Oh, look, there's a thought of, uh, lack and scarcity. Oh, look, there's a thought of abundance and generosity.

Speaker 1:

It's like they're just thoughts, it's mindful meditation where you're not just observing but we're allowing. We're allowing those thoughts to have the right to exist, because the second, we resist them or we deny them or we make them bad or less than we, and we want to avoid those thoughts, the uncomfortable ones, and feel only the good ones. All of a sudden we've given them more power, which they don't need more power. Then it's a battle of light and dark, a power of good and a battle of good and evil, a battle of uncomfortable feelings versus feeling good. Now we're in this dualistic battle, when it's just like if I can allow it all, if I could be OK feeling it all, and if I could observe it all and just see it all with innocence and wonder and not hook into it, then I'm free.

Speaker 1:

This is what is available to us and of course we know it takes practice, it takes a commitment to it, it takes growing awareness, because sometimes we're not aware, we're sleeping, we're unconscious, just reacting to things. So this work is about bringing the sub or below our conscious level up into our consciousness, to see it, to see it innocently, to see the effects that it has our thinking, our choices and to ask do I want this anymore? Do I want to keep dropping this pebble and experiencing the ripples With innocence, not self-judgment? And then we get to make a choice. And then we realize, oh my God, it's all choice. Between stimulants and response. There's a space, and that space is your power to choose, is your power to choose your experience, viktor Frankl's work.

Speaker 1:

So instead of just reading through this, I took out my transformation journal and I focused on that phrasing what are my attachments to fear? If mastery is choosing to release all attachment to fear, then maybe it would be a valuable use of time to ask myself what are my attachments to fear? And so I'm going to share with you my own journal process and the insights that I had. And these might not mean anything to you, and that doesn't matter to me, because it's important to me, and you might have your own insights. But again, the idea is just to do the work and the insight and the value will come.

Speaker 1:

So one of the things I wrote down on attachment to fear is fear of failure. And I said well, fear of failure, what's my attachment to that? Well, in my mind, fear failure means because I want to look at what, how I'm defining things. So then I understand their effect that they're having on me. Failure means and this isn't like conscious, this, is just me being curious Well, what does failure mean? If I'm being honest, a part of me not all of me, obviously, but a part of me that's buying into this idea that failure equals bad. Well, failure equals bad because failure equals I suck, I'm not good enough, I don't deserve, and I wrote those things down and I just looked at them.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes there's so much value just looking at what we write I suck, I'm not good enough, I don't deserve good things, or I don't deserve to be happy, or I don't deserve money, or I don't deserve ease, whatever happy, or I don't deserve money, or I don't deserve ease, whatever it is. So, of course, if I think that failure whatever again, how do I define failure? Something not working out the way that I want it to, that's a very egotistical and arrogant. If I think about it way of seeing the world, that failure means when I do something, it has to work out the way that I want it to and look the way that I think it should. Otherwise it's a failure. And that might be that other people like it, or that I think it's good, or it brings me money, or it brings me, you know, esteem from others. You know that it works out the way I want it to in the timing that I want it to, that's, and if it doesn't, then it's a failure. I mean that's so limited, and now I see that. And if it means that I suck, it means I'm not good enough, it means I don't deserve. Then anytime I have this failure, things not working out the way that I think they should in the timing which is, by the way, we all know, that's life I things not working out the way that I think they should in the timing which is, by the way, we all know, that's life. I mean those things happen, but if that's what that means when those things happen, that's such a fixed mindset I can't get out of it. It's like Carol Dweck's amazing work Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. Carol Dweck, stanford profession, d-w-e-c-k. Speaker 1:

So this idea of a fixed mindset, there's no. The fixed mindset means you're just born the way you are. You can't improve Intelligence, skill anything. You just that I am, that's what I am. I am born with what I got and that's it. And of course, when you live with a fixed mindset, you're going to suffer when you face inevitable challenges and failures.

Speaker 1:

Instead of a growth mindset where you're like, no matter what present level I'm at, if I put in effort and focus and intention and I don't quit, I'm going to get better at something, I'm going to increase my skill, I'm going to be able to learn a different language, instead of saying I'm just bad at languages or I'm just bad at math. That's a fixed mindset. You might say like I'm not very good at math or it's harder for me than maybe other people, but I know, if I put in time and effort, that I'll figure it out, that I'll get better over time Again. I might get better slower than someone else, but I will get better. I can grow and learn. The brain is neuroplastic. So a fixed mindset is I suck, I'm not good enough, I don't deserve it. So there's no room for growth there, there's no room for grace there. So how can I have a more of a growth mindset around again? Redefining failure gives me more of a growth mindset. There's no failure in a growth mindset. I'm learning. I'm always learning something, I'm always improving even a little bit. I'm always seeing something new with every experience that I have.

Speaker 1:

And then it made me think about this idea of like deserving and like being inherently worthy or feeling inherently unworthy. And then I thought about royalty. Royalty, you know this idea, maybe not so much in modern times, but still there's royalty that God has given this person this lineage. They're by blood, they're royal, they're of God, they're somehow like special or anointed or whatever. And if a child is born into a royal family, they just grow up thinking they're, you know, god's gift to the world, that they have a right to this royalty. They have a respect that everybody else who's not royal needs to give them or afford them or whatever. It is right, but they didn't earn it, they didn't prove themselves worthy of it. They just think that they have it Like.

Speaker 1:

Well, what would be different if I was born into this idea of being royalty? How would I treat myself differently? Even if I wasn't like an egotistical ruler of like I'm better than you, if it was, if it wasn't, if I was like a, if I was an honorable royal person, I still would have this sense that I'm God created, that God loves me, maybe not more than other people, but God loves me. I know I'm royal. So can I live that way in my daily life right now, not trying to be better than or getting anything different than other people, but just knowing that internally I am royalty, I'm a child of the almighty, and treat myself that way and then see other people as that too, even if they don't realize it. We see these stories all the time. Is it like Prince and the pauper? We're like. You know, the twins get separated at birth. One gets raised up as royalty and the other gets raised, you know, as a commoner. But once they realize their royalty, their whole sense of self shifts. But of course they bring, like the, the humility of being the commoner with them to now the royal, the royal scene. But what if that's the same for everybody?

Speaker 1:

And then I wrote another thing. I'm afraid the part of me is afraid of fear of death. And I wrote I'm afraid the fear is physical pain. And then the fear of death for me is like if, if there's, if there's nothing, like if when we die it's just black screen game over, cease to exist. And then the part of me goes well, then this whole thing's a lie. This whole God thing, this whole eternal life thing, it's a bullshit, it's a lie. And I got duped and I wasted all this time on that and I missed out. So if I believe in eternal life, somehow I'm missing out on life.

Speaker 1:

And so these two stems of the fear of death came forward, that death should like, and I was like well, what if death should be feared? It's two sides of the same coin. Death should be feared because there is nothing. Let's imagine there is nothing. It's like black screen over you cease to exist when you die. If that's true, then then live full out right now. Then don't waste any time, then do the thing, take the risk, because you only got this life, and then boop, you're done. So why not go out full out?

Speaker 1:

And then the other side of the coin was well, if death is an illusion and you do live an eternal life, then stop being afraid. Stop being afraid. What do you have to be afraid of? So live full out, take advantage of being alive and live full out. It's an illusion anyway. And both of those paths led to the same conclusion Live full out, go for it. Be bold, go for your dreams, be loving, take the risks, have fun.

Speaker 1:

Whether death is real or death is an illusion, they led to the same place, and that only came through the journaling of it, through the writing things down, through the seeing words on the paper and getting curious well, what does that mean? And if that means this, then where does that lead to? So those were two really cool insights that I had during my journaling process today and I want to share them with you. So, yes, it's releasing attachment to the fears and, in perfect surrender, you release the dream of the dreamer itself, release your attachment to this life, even to being human. That doesn't mean you don't be fully human, you don't fully live your daily life, do that. But it's the attachment to it that creates the sense of fear and suffering that if it looks any different than I think it should, or if I don't have control, then something bad is going to happen to me.

Speaker 1:

And jesus says allow the mystery of life to live you like. We've done this for, however old you are, for however old you are maybe you know from the time you were seven ish when your brain shifts and you go from being an open sponge to like, starting to run the programs of your conditioning and your family and their rules, and like from zero to seven're an open sponge. We just take in all this information, we don't even realize it, and then, somewhere around seven, our brain shifts and the programs that we've absorbed get locked into the subconscious and they run our life. So from that point, let's say from that moment on around seven to however age you are today, you've done life living like. You are trying to control life. You know how that is Trying to be the puppet master, trying to manage the mystery, trying to get what you know, get the needs that you think you are missing, get those needs met. And it shows up in relationships and work and your health and all these things You're trying to. You think you're the captain of your ship for, however, from seven to however old you are, you know what living like that is like.

Speaker 1:

But what if we did an experiment and we tried to live a different way, where we let life live us? You let life live you and it's a mystery and you don't know, and you're not trying to predict the future or analyze everything to make all the unknowns known. And you live in the mystery. You embrace the mystery, you embrace the unknown, you embrace that you really don't know what a single thing is or is for. We haven't really lived life that way. It seems so scary to us and we have so much messaging around that that's very scary to be out of control and to just go willy nilly by the wind. That leads to chaos, that leads to suffering, that leads to things not getting done. Things only get done when we worry about and we have a plan and we are busy doing. But what if we tried to live a different way? What if we had made it a fun, playful experiment to see what would happen?

Speaker 1:

Something to consider Without obstruction, without fear, in perfect knowing that I and my Father are one? There is nothing I have to do to get God. God is not something to be gotten out there. You can't get what you already have. You have God. You have everything you're looking for already within you, but you're so convinced it's out there in the next thing, you're told that it's out there in the next thing. You see every commercial to make you buy something, to feel the thing that you want to feel when it's already inside of you. There are only some things to be released, some things to be released, to be let go. You're the one holding on. Think of if you're gripping something. All you do is open your hand. You got to let go of the grip so that God can get you, so that God can get me. Ooh, I want God to get me. I want to know what that feels like and live from that place.

Speaker 1:

To the ego, that's terrifying because it's like death, dying daily to your ego needs and obsessions and all the fears, and living from this place of overflow and generosity and peace and love and joy. That's scary. To the ego, what if we get rejected? What if people don't like that? They're like this guy's weird, he's a wacko, get him out of here. He doesn't understand how the real world works. That's the ego fear. But to the heart it's total freedom.

Speaker 1:

And this is a beautiful mantra that we can write down 10 times a day in the morning or say out loud or put as a reminder on our phone or whatever it is to reinforce, to repeat and reinforce the truth of the statement and really move into the feeling of it that I and my Father, my Creator, we are one. There's no separation. There's nothing that I have to do to get God, because I wouldn't exist if God didn't create me. So I don't have to get God, because I wouldn't exist if God didn't create me. So I don't have to get God. God is the very essence of my aliveness, my consciousness, not old man, sky daddy. Be good, get rewarded, be bad, get punished. It is life itself expressing itself as you. I don't have to get that. The fact that I exist, not, I think. Therefore, I am. I would say it's the opposite I am. Therefore, I think there are only some things to be released, and this is the work just noticing the things to be released so that God can get me, so to speak, so that I can wake up to that I've already been gotten.

Speaker 1:

It makes me think of a quote from I don't remember which book, but in college and high school I think I read some of the Tony Morrison's amazing books, and there's this one quote that always stood out to me. It was if you want to fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down, and then you'll just float, you'll just fly. What's the shit that weighs us down? What are the things to be released? Fear, resistance, judgment, judgment, resistance, judgment, judgment making emotions and feelings and thoughts bad or mean something about us. All events and all things and all people are neutral, but no thought is neutral. So what thought are we attaching ourselves to? What thought are we entertaining and giving value to? We experience the effects of the thoughts that we give value to. You want to fly? You got to give up the shit that weighs you down the fear, the judgment, the comparison, the people pleasing all that stuff. But we have to be aware of it. To let it go, we have to be aware that we're holding on to it and gripping it, gripping ourselves to these heavy cinder blocks, even though if we let go of them, we'll go flying.

Speaker 1:

So that's what this work is. It's raising awareness and it's mastery. It doesn't happen as an event. That's usually not how we experience it. It can, but that's usually not how we experience it.
