In this week’s episode, Madeleine Crown & Christina Campbell are back on the podcast for Part 2 of our conversation about The Singles Bill Of Rights.

The Singles Bill of Rights (SBR) is a policy proposal. Its creation has an American focus and will work as a springboard for other countries to follow suit – adapting it to fit their own needs. Ultimately, Madeleine, Christina, and the rest of the SBR team would like to convene a UN Convention for Singles Bill of Rights, and create a Universal Bill of Rights for Singles.

Madeleine is a Lead Project Assistant for an engineering firm, a scandalous divorcee/born again Spinster, a single dog mom, and a self-guided researcher and writer regarding feminism and women’s creativity. She is currently working on a comparative study of women writers and an almanac of women writers across cultures and history, in addition to working on the Singles Bill of Rights.

Christina co-founded the singles' advocacy blog Onely, long before singles’ rights were cool. Her articles about marital status discrimination have appeared in The Atlantic and elsewhere. She is seeking representation for her memoir about invisible illness, which contains award-winning essays on physical and mental health. She lives in Northern Virginia with her infrared sauna and two semi-geriatric cats.

Both women are happily single and childfree.

Topics that we cover are:

  • the medical discrimination that singles face;
  • including in the Bill the right to equal healthcare regardless of marital status;
  • the right to equal access for singles to health, bereavement, and other benefits within the work place;
  • how health insurance discriminates against single people;
  • the tendency to regard minorities as ‘less than’;
  • the similarities in discrimination within the LGBTQ community, and the singles community;
  • the team of people involved in creating the Singles Bill of Rights, including Bella DePaulo and Dr. Kris Marsh;
  • how single disabled people, and single chronically ill people, are disproportionately discriminated against;
  • the goal of bringing the Singles Bill of Rights to every country around the world;
  • why we should look at creating ‘life event leave’ for singles who don’t take maternity or paternity leave;
  • why we need single people and their lives to be better represented in the media, in movies, in the news etc…;
  • Madeleine and Christina’s favourite things about being single.
