welcome to the who's turn is it Anyway podcast where we talk about board games ball games and guess what even more Bard
0:21
games it's part two of our UK games Expo special where we are going to unveil our
0:26
live episode that we recorded on the Friday at the show also we have a little treat because over the weekend we
0:32
managed to catch up with many Publishers and designers and different people to talk about their game so we sprinkled
0:38
some of those interviews in as well for your pleasure so without further Ado let's crack on with the live
Welcome to Whose Turn Is It Anyway LIVE at the UK Games Expo
0:46
[Music]
0:53
show good afternoon everybody and welcome to the whose turn is anyway podcast live at the UK games Expo
1:04
such energy it's fantastic fantastic I'm JP and again this is the first time we've ever done this as you could
1:10
probably tell all right so when we uh when we booked this um I don't know
1:16
about three months ago yeah yeah we we were just like will anyone turn up who knows who knows but you're here we're
1:22
going to have a laugh regardless yeah we're just going to do it anyway and record it so it's all good no but thank you very much uh for coming you're all
1:28
awesome and I appreciate your time um so those that you've already found on your seats you'll see some laminates if you
1:35
can wave them in the air for me if you haven't got one like you just don't care you just don't care there we go to be
1:41
done thank you piped down curly you PED in your car over there um
1:49
and yeah oh no stop it that's being edited out everyone
1:56
don't worry bad so we're going to test out but basically want this to be as engaging as possible and um throughout
2:04
the different segments that I'll cover in a second we'll basically use these laminates to kind of say yes and no and vote on things so we'll try that right
2:10
now so who has actually heard of the who's turn anyway podcast no so yes yes
2:16
yes I use red for no then I thought blue would be green is yes and red is no but
2:22
my brain went what that's just your brain is yeah I know colors they confuse you don't they
2:29
D heard of no um and okay great stuff so we got some new people in here who has
2:34
followed us right from the beginning from March 2022 Ian you were on the
2:40
podcast so yes yeah listen to it so again a bit of a
2:46
mix there that brilliant well welcome to the show for those that don't know us uh just let let us give you a little bit of
2:52
a spiel about who we are so we're basically a gaming group uh in the southwest right that's that's kind of
2:57
our thing uh we established this gaming group group about I don't know what seven years ago8 years ago something
3:03
like that W and a few years ago we thought why not do a podcast we talk about games we love games we love
3:09
playing games and we just spun up a podcast and it's fair to say we made some errors along the way yeah no yeah I
3:16
I have and if anyone's listened to the kind of get a rewind episodes you most
3:22
definitely know that we've we mess make a lot of mistakes yeah so it's kind of the bloopers kind of section that we do
3:29
every now and again so yeah so basically our kind of podcast is we we do like a
3:34
main episode every fortnite it's usually got a a topic or we might do a game Deep dive or or something along the sides and
3:40
we have a rotating first player so um for example the first player will pick like three episodes of content that they
3:47
will do and then we mix it up so we all kind of get a little flavor and we uh inject a bit of variety in it some
3:54
episodes are like I say about games some are completely chaotic U not looking at you Davey you do bring some innov
4:00
Innovation to to the podcast don't you it's like living in chaos it's fine yeah some random stuff we love it we love
4:07
dice yeah um we also do expansion pack episodes as well which we kind of trickle in in between our main episodes
4:12
and they're like uh guest uh interviews or convention coverage like pretty much
4:17
the one that we're going to do here at the UK games Expo and and all sorts of different things so so yeah that's kind
4:23
of us um obviously we're at the live episode so we're not going to do our normal format we're going to kind of mix
4:29
it up a bit and we're going to break this into kind of two halves uh the first half we're going to kind of cover
4:35
it's a call back to one of Davey's episodes where he basically pretended to be a genie it's weird I know pretended
4:41
to be a genie and tried to take everyone's Soul by twisting their wishes up into nonsense so we're going to kind
4:47
of do a twist on that and and then the second part we're going to like take it's the car
4:54
yeah they they're going to drive in yeah this doesn't make listening
5:00
but basically the rest of the podcast are sitting to the right of everyone else in a formation that can only be described as a car like they're about to
5:07
do some weird improv yeah for me it reminds me of Red Dwarf for one of the episodes where they're all sitting there in the car anyway it's probably a lost
5:14
reference to many but but there we go um so that yeah they're going to come on come on and they're going to basically
5:19
uh take the top 20 games that we uh kind of voted on from played last year and
5:24
I'll let Curley tell you more about that later so it's JP here with you games
INTERVIEW 1: Lee Miller from Molinarious Games (Time Troopers)
5:30
Expo on Saturday morning and I'm here at M Oris games meeting Lee how are you Lee I'm good thank you how are you I'm good
5:36
thank you so we have just played time Troopers this morning with the wonderful Mark who's he's basically busy doing
5:41
another demo as we speak right now but Lee we just get a little bit of a sniffer what is time Troopers and
5:47
obviously you've listened to our podcast that says we need more time well travel in in board games right so yeah go for
5:54
it yeah definitely that's why I reached out so you were saying we need more time traveling which fits perfectly with our theme so time Troopers is a solo only
6:01
deck construction game so you start with a a deck of cards which is your time Troopers in the future and you have to
6:07
decide which of those cards you take with you back into eight different time zones uh and achieving different
6:13
missions I don't want to give too much away but you just had the the play test and as you've seen it's the play is very
6:19
simple very straightforward but it's quite an immersive experience in as much as one minute you're battling in ancient
6:25
Egypt and then the next mission you might be in a gladiator pit or then you might be in a samurai stealthing a
6:30
temple so there's a lot to the game and I think there's definitely a market more and more for solo gaming as well yeah
6:36
now OB that I mean I I play a lot of solo games anyway you know and I've got ones that kind of range from like hocus
6:43
from Chip Fury which is this Grand solo Adventure downsides to that sometimes can be oh got to get it to the table and
6:51
set it up and then it it takes 4 hours whereas this is I think we talked the other day you know if your partner is
6:58
watching TV you can that you play a scenario by the time that episode's finished you're done yeah we we've one
7:04
of the things we've done is set the Box up so it's deliberately set up with save points in the Box already um so you can
7:11
set the game up in 5 minutes play a mission in 40 to 45 minutes and then pack it away in 5 minutes you'll still
7:16
pack it away in a in a a bit which saves where you are so the next time you open the box lid you don't have to go searching and organizing it's ready to
7:22
go on the next mission and your mission book is there as well so you can turn it over in a ring binder so it's ready for
7:28
you to to go so yeah you can play a whole game in an hour and it doesn't take over the whole dining room table for the next 3 days yeah I think what's
7:34
really cool is that you you can kind of unlock those side missions as you play right and and you get access to to more
7:40
cards that you can get into your I don't know your shop as it were that you can kind of construct your deck for future
7:46
missions so again you can tailor your play as you go through so that it doesn't always feel the same so you
7:52
might actually go for a certain series of cards and one playr through the whole scenarios and then next time you you
7:57
know what I'm going to try it slightly different you go that kind of play build so yeah it's interesting yeah that again that's a deliberate action so we call it
8:03
the Armory so so you visit the Armory before every Mission and decide what cards you're going to take with you uh
8:09
and it comes with a Choose Your Own Adventure book which is the mission book itself yeah so you could play the whole game from start to finish and so could I
8:16
we would both start and end at the same point so we would both have the same ending both have the same start but how
8:21
we get there is very different depending on what choices you make so you could decide to stealth the temple and I decide to go in all guns blazing uh and
8:28
then you might be wasn't it cool when we unlocked the saburai sword and I say Oh no I got a viking Shield cuz I went a different direction yeah so yeah it's it
8:36
the good point about that is you can reset the game and play it again even though it's a campaign game you can reset it start again but make different
8:43
choices so that you get more out of the game as well if you wanted to great stuff so when can we expect to to get
8:49
our hands on time Troopers then Le so we're hoping to get it uh out on game found in December yeah or January uh
8:54
then run a 30-day campaign so fingers crossed we're hoping to bring the first prototypes to airon next year and when
9:01
you come to the games Expo next year you'll be able to physically buy a copy nice so we like to get the game finished
9:08
which is why it's taking so long to to get to game found so that it's a relatively short forward short time from
9:15
the pledge to delivery yeah uh rather than please back my game I'll we'll send you one in three or four years time if
9:20
the wind's blown in the right direction so yeah from December please follow us on game found and then uh we'll get it
9:27
campaign launched in December or January okay and if you want more time travel you know Shenanigans in your games like I do then check it out yeah the good
9:34
thing is if we are running behind schedule we've got a Time gate so we can go back in time and make change some of our
9:40
decisions thank you very much Lee appreciate it thank
9:45
you I'm here at UK games Expo and catching up with Devon from Lucky du games in the storage room we are
INTERVIEW 2: Devon Norris from Lucky Duck Games (Flames of Fafnir)
9:52
literally we have to tell this story I said Devon can we have a chat me absolutely you need to come into the storage room because it's quieter I mean
9:59
I did stress that it was because it was quieter yeah otherwise it would seem like a strange reason hey please come
10:06
into this quiet corner where I can murc you yeah and you handsome fellow you um
10:12
so also Deon you have Devon talks tabletop YouTube channel is well yes that that is my YouTube channel it has
10:17
been sadly uh um dormant I guess while I've been doing my lucky duck work but
10:23
you know I just uh enjoying what I'm doing trying to do it to the best of my ability but I I do love the community
10:29
that fostered there so yeah yeah so so we caught up at the the preview show last night okay and uh we played what
10:35
was it the the jeel game I can never pronounce it so we played kir ey The Duel so you came over to the table I was
10:42
talking about kind of our recent releases or upcoming releases discussing nestlings and other things and then I
10:48
always take the chance to play someone in Kiri ey The Duel if I have the opportunity and you gave me that
10:53
opportunity you did it brilliant I love that it ended with with no end um we had
10:59
injured each other and and then we stopped and then we stopped and then I went and bought it anyway so it's fine I
11:05
mean that I I love that I bought that game five times and I have given it away five times so uh I need another copy so
11:13
I'll go buy it too that's fair that's fair so we were talking about flames of faf right yeah flames of faf an upcoming
11:19
uh Kickstarter for us from Lucky Duck yeah so what what's it all about so flames of fafnir uh for the viewers out
11:25
there we're currently staring at a gorgeously painted mini um but it is a
11:30
physics-based strategy game so it has some semi Coop nature to it because you
11:35
are heroes who are competing uh to save the Village from the Wrath of fafnir the
11:43
fire breathing dragon fire in the form of vicious marbles rolling at you in a
11:50
in a terrifying Lane that does have borders to it which means it's coming down and you're going to get hit and
11:57
that is just something that you have to accept and then you stand back back up and you get hit again and your goal though is to be the one to get hit and
12:03
not the Bastion walls of the village so as soon as all five bastions in the village have been destroyed faf wins
12:10
okay which means you need to erect defenses you've got walls you've got barricades you've got watchtowers you
12:17
need to gather your resources go out and uh complete quests to gather runes
12:23
because fafnir has weaknesses in the form of five heart chambers and you need to go bring the runes that you have
12:29
gathered and the treasure that you have accumulated in order to defeat those successive heart chambers and kill the
12:36
dragon slay it before it slays you and all of the village with its fire
12:41
mongering so it's uh a lot of fun it's a it's a good time around the table but
12:47
there is a lot of collaboration that needs to happen in order to be heroic
12:53
you know you don't want to be cowardly you want to be heroic you want to be the one that's up the front taking the marbles yeah yeah
12:59
that there's no better way to describe it than the one at the front taking the marbles so awesome no it sounds really
13:06
fun I to keep it ey on that one in the yeah it's coming up on Kickstarter uh pretty soon here so we're looking
13:11
forward to it and we've got a lot of thing fun things plann for it so hopefully give you a little bit of a
13:17
taste later uh later this weekend at the at the Expo yeah absolutely and what we
13:22
could put some links in our show notes for this episode that it's going to feature on so we can point you in any direction for any material so
13:30
the real question is when you fight faf are you going to fight the dragon or join it ah so yeah probably fight it no
13:38
no that's not I I'll probably join Hima okay traitor okay I I get it I get it I
13:44
I can respect that I was going to do it myself but you know I I may try to be more honorable now just to where I can
13:50
differentiate the two of us you know absolutely thank you de appreciate your time and hope you have a good show thank
13:56
you so much excited to to chat with you more andc for a good ukg yeah thanks
14:02
man so I'm going to hand over to Davey to formally introduce the rest of the panel and also the segment so over to
LIVE EPISODE: Djinn Davey - Your Expo is only your favourite genre of games but it's the only place to play them
14:09
you my friend right so For Better or Worse here we go
14:14
um you got your seat belts on in the car safy first Safety First gu so this
14:20
segment I'm pretty much going to be throwing some wishes forward which all going to be a little bit ball game based
14:25
of course cuz we're a ball game podcast um and we're ball game Expo um and then
14:31
you you guys are just going to think up some examples I might ask you some questions maybe and then it may be
14:37
flipped who knows and then suddenly you're going to think do we still want to do this probably not maybe who knows
14:45
um so I'm Davey um the self- praim bad boy of board gaming
14:53
yeah yeah your name yeah I don't know where that even came from it was last Expo I think was from you yeah I know
14:59
came from me but I don't know where I don't know where it was 24hour yeah it was it was 24 hour quite tired by that
15:05
point so delirious yeah joining us is going to be Rob hi and Becky hi um JP's
15:11
here as well but he's already introduced himself so done right let's should we just get stuck in let's do it we get
15:16
stuck in yeah cool so we're at the Expo now imagine you can have the Expo filled
15:22
with your favorite type of game so that can either be genre or mechanical based so like a Euro or Dungeon Crawl or
15:29
whatever yeah um and that's that's it so what kind of game do you think that
15:34
would be so don't want to like put forward a game that they would like the Expo to be filled with any ideas from
15:40
you guys cute animals cute animals cute animals and you just have it filled W to W of cute animals I probably wouldn't
15:47
come but that's fine my Expo not your Expo yeah that's true that's true I'm going to have all kinds of like puzzle
15:53
games and worker placement but it's got to either involve cute little meols or nice pictures of animals AR I might turn
16:00
up sounding Crossing ever that's my that's cool I like it what you're going
16:07
to say dungeon craw well we we we we we went on a bit of a journey this morning me and Adrian and every store we went to
16:13
seemed to look at like an amazing Dungeon Crawler game so you think pretty much already the Expo fi your stuff
16:18
anyway I'm here um so for me yeah it' be Dungeon Crawlers okay I thought your journey was cuz you forgot your past
16:24
this morning he did he actually did that was his own dungeon a quest you had to go on
16:31
and I remembered as we got just to The Moxy I'd left it in the hotel room which was 2 km away so yeah i' I'd hit 10,000
16:39
steps before 10:00 so you know yeah good it's a win-win for me apparently yeah nice JP what's yours going I think for
16:47
me it would be to many B chip Theory Yeah Yeah well yeah SL to chips chips
16:54
like scre MC swi swimming through chips let's do that okay yeah wrapping up with
17:00
nepr let's do it okay uh mine probably be heavy Euro surprise surprise nice
17:05
heavy Euro basically just lots of beige theme everywhere great you can almost feel the excitement leave the
17:13
room heavy Euro just CU how about you guys does anyone want to throw any forward yeah what's what's your bag
17:19
what's your jam go on Marcus you can give us an example uh I was going to say heavy ERS
17:25
which is basically which is basically just Essen [Laughter]
17:31
Fantasy games come up yeah yeah there Fantasy games in any any any the ring
17:37
nothing well yeah all right fair enough there you go that's the sub genre of fantasy that you just dig don't you mate
17:43
right my fantasy okay so here comes a Twist oh that genre that that that type
17:49
of game is Expo limited you can only ever play it when you come to the expo from now on that's it so every time so
17:57
you outside these walls it just doesn't EX exist not even on B no no no for some reason every time you tried to see it
18:02
it's just like a blur and you can't even play the game anymore I just threw up in my
18:08
mouth now this is one of those things that you can only have your own personal like dialogue but we just want everyone
18:15
to vote whether they still do it because you're going to have like four jam-packed days of Awesomeness but maybe
18:23
you have to leave it for a year but we're patient people aren't we we're board gamers we're used to people with ap it's fine but the interesting thing
18:30
is though what you say the interesting thing is when you leave the Expo you have no memory of
18:35
it m all right I'm going to raise your memories all right so we're still
18:40
me not that bad men black everyone on the
18:45
way go on then let's see what little what do you reckon yeah I'm with you guys Jo doing
18:52
it Jo didn't we got Joe doesn't know where he is right now he's Delirious so I want to hear Joe what was
18:59
your what was your theme well if it's heavy Euros then I won't bother coming to the Expo no it means
19:05
you're it's not his it's yours your oh yeah that's fine anyone else want to
19:13
venture what their what their favorite was going to be and they're going to do it no it's fine they expected a show not
19:20
participation no I can't do it because I need the the nice furry creatures and if I can't play B if I can't play BGA even
19:26
then me and cury won't have a game we're going to play cuz we play arova all the time and if I can't play that anywhere else I'm I'm not no so to put it into
19:34
context we had about four yeses I think so majority was no no one's no one's going for it variety is the spice of
19:40
life so I do understand I understand it I'm swimming at home yeah little Top Hat yeah
INTERVIEW 3: Dave Beck from Paverson Games (Luthier)
19:48
yeah hi I'm Adrian from whose turn is anyway podcast here at the Expo and we're here with pson papon Pon yeah pson
19:56
games um for luia their new game that's out soon I believe yeah coming just in a couple weeks July 16th we're going to
20:03
launch it on Kickstarter awesome stuff so we've just had a demo there's a lot going on but do you want to just summarize it as yeah definitely so luier
20:10
is all about crafting in instruments in the Golden Age of classical music for different patrons over 40 historical
20:17
figures from classical music there's worker placement with a Twist there's hidden bidding worker placement uh
20:22
there's area control where you're putting things in the orchestra pit uh there's also some engine building as
20:28
well as some res management and recipe fulfillment it's really theme driven mechanics through and through really
20:34
trying to exude really great artwork components and play brilliant yeah so
20:39
we've just played through it and we had um you have the number on the worker that tells you sort of who's going to go
20:45
first exactly but in turn order you also choose where you're going so you can kind of trip people up and kind of get
20:51
in their way a little bit that's right seemed like a really nice sort of mechanic to kind of the building is quite nice but then
20:59
you can kind of get in each other's Way by doing that yeah I really wanted to make sure there's a little bit of interactivity in that where it's not
21:06
take that necessarily uh but at the same time it might divert your plans from what you wanted to originally do and you
21:12
need to be able to be flexible and strategic on how you are going to be tactically change your your direction
21:18
well and then last thing because it's it's a Kickstarter or it's coming to a crowdfunding platform obviously just
21:24
taking a picture of the board there how much of this is is ready to go you can see if few placeholder images but
21:29
otherwise it looks pretty good condition yeah we're pretty close I with distill that took me about a year and a half
21:35
before we were able to deliver to backers this time I want to do that within under easily under a year that's
21:40
why we took Extra Care to have most everything finished before the kickstarter so that we can almost press print almost right after the kickstarter
21:47
goes um what you see here mostly is the deluxe components we're going to have both the deluxe version for backers to
21:53
get as well as a standard retail version too brilliant so if you're coming to the Expo um come and have a look at the
21:59
stand if not hopefully that's giving you a little bit of a helping hand to understand what's coming to the kickstarter soon yeah thanks thank you
22:05
very much thanks um right so moving on to the next one so I bet everyone has their favorite
LIVE EPISODE: Djinn Davey - Your favourite convention game that takes ages to play
22:12
convention game they like to bring like a nice usually is one that's not too big CU I've made that mistake before
22:17
bringing void full and then never playing all weekend carrying it around to two separate
22:24
ones I mean at one time I even set it up and didn't even didn't even get played so that's the worst thing ever we play
22:29
three quarters what did we play we played three quarters yeah yes sorry we did play we played a little bit of it
22:36
and then the 12-hour M ended that's your fall down sorry yeah stop
22:43
the how dare you um so what let's have a little think of what everyone's like favorite
22:49
convention game to bring along scout scout I love that anyone play a scout
22:55
little small box great game fit your pocket it's probably been overtaken by uh a
23:01
card now though no no no no scouts are classic CL oink a year old isn't it it's
23:10
a modern classic okay fine easy number building game easy card game perfect for
23:16
everybody I think yeah yeah okay that's mine what about you it's a good shout well I I tend to gauge what I bring by
23:23
what JP's bringing so if he's if he's bringing his big backpack we live just around the corner from each other
23:28
typically share lift so seven hous sugar yeah sugar yeah oh you got your sugar
23:35
mate it is is like that I have no idea just Just Go With It just smile and wave
23:41
um he's used to just honking isn't so I've brought we've we've done quite a
23:46
few of these weekends this year haven't we we you know we've kind of gone away for weekends and and things like that and every time I've brought Ash's reborn
23:53
with me just because it's something you can either play with somebody else or I can play on my own if I just need half
23:58
an hour to chill and I've never played it at a convention you bring it every time I was
24:05
taking a Mickey out of Davy but I've done exactly the same thing um to the point where it's in my bag right now and
24:10
I probably still won't play it this evening so uh for me it would be Ash's reborn might as well just burn it now well no it's in the name
24:17
no oh you're you're dead panjo they're terrible they're terrible
24:23
that I think I think for it's a tough one um I think I quite like to bring a
24:28
nice Midway Euro to to conventions so something like uh Lorenzo magnifico or
24:33
something of that that nature against some European Town some European Town um
24:39
where you're a family and you're voling for victory points and you're moving cubes around awesome we all know the
24:45
game let all do it yeah all all of them all so yeah something like that okay
24:50
cool I'm going to ask I'm going to keep asking you guys so if but if you don't want to say any we we appreciate that
24:56
ignore him yeah just ignore go Igloo pop yes Igloo pop has anyone else heard of
25:02
igloo pop by the way no no cuz this is a complete new thing for me but it's a
25:07
super old game and it sounds ridiculous and it literally does sound ridiculous because the premise of the game is you
25:13
got load of igloos which have got numbers on the bottom right from 2 to 14 I believe and the numbers on the bottom
25:18
represent how many little glass beads are inside these little plasti IG glues and the aim of the game is to shake the
25:24
igloo near your ear like a I thought it was in a South American restaurant and sit next to you guys oh I reckon that's
25:31
a I reckon that's a six and you only got a few options of what number it could be so you put it on the six and you put
25:36
your little color token in it and if it turns out that you guess the right amount of little glass beads that's your
25:42
token and you win it back it's great but they don't print it anymore so what did you do about it Becky well in my normal
25:49
fashion I've had to design them on a 3D printing CAD tired already we are not selling these by the way these are not
25:56
being sold I'm not going to sell it no I don't want to rip off please don't come off rest we've got no money so don't
26:03
worry about it if they want if they can sell me the game I'd happily buy it I haven't printed them out yet these little IG glues but I've already bought
26:09
the glass beads So and I've got the design ready and I'm going to yeah your XC shop tag is I'm not going to sell it
26:16
on it I'm not going to sell them however it's a great game that it shouldn't be great should just be like but it's it's
26:22
fantastic if anyone sees it if you see it in the bringer by well you'll have to fight it out of my hands but I would
26:27
recommend if you say igloo pop what about anyone else anyone else from our favorite kind of board game to bring at
26:33
convention well I'd rather uh try games and you know on the demo table otherwise
26:40
maybe strong it's not that big character age of innovation age of
26:46
innovation every time oh yeah I would I play that all day every day nice light game there what are you going to do to
26:52
our favorite games and Davey so now from now on whenever you set up the game for some reason
26:59
don't know why it takes hours to set up like you start setting up someone spills a rum near
27:05
you packet sweet flies over knocks over a bottle of water you're like oh and
27:10
this every time you set up at a convention the game doesn't get damaged but it just takes a while to set up you
27:16
get to play the game still but it just takes ages to set up so a bit like frost
27:21
Haven yeah yeah this is this inspired by void forall um will you still bring the
27:26
game so can we have a little does it only take forever at a convention or does it take at the convention at the
27:32
convention it's just the convention thing stuff keeps getting in the way from you like just kind of getting going
27:38
yeah I'd still bring I would do a really evil laugh right now but I already sore throat so I'm not going to um but the
27:44
majority is yes he's not normally either Nico you're not bringing yours what you what were you going to bring don't know
27:49
maybe cam up great game yeah great game players yeah yeah good laugh good laugh
27:55
you just have that like um Pavlov's dog thing as soon as you the box out you like oh it's all going to go wrong would you you'd have it St and you never you
28:01
never associate it either you just this always seems to take ages to set up why
28:06
I just playing games with you DAV that is our that is our experience
28:12
inness there we go I think yeah I think for me I'm on the S Camp because you're
28:18
at convention you're I'm the laugh so if it takes a bit longer oh well that's it yeah it's a bit more social isn't it so
28:23
you're having a chat someone's off getting a beer or a drink and then yeah yeah wasn't someone else playing this
28:30
you know and then you wait for them and then they turn up someone else leaves have we all lost our soul now is that
28:35
what's happening okay okay a lot of us had to travel quite far to come here yeah so I know it's right in the middle
LIVE EPISODE: Djinn Davey - A free UKGE entry and hotel but with queues everywhere
28:42
so it's not too bad but we still have to travel here and walk into your hotel it's not usually you know no one can get
28:48
the Moxy uh so you're always like doing a little pilgrimage back and back in
28:54
what if the XO was free you you basically got free food you got
29:02
to the hotel was just up up above us yeah you got to stay in there
29:07
yeah and everything else was the games weren't free you still have to buy those yeah and you still have to bring them
29:12
and pay not be mad most people what kind of Genie are you I think most people are going to say yes to this yeah you'll be
29:18
like yeah I'll come to that yeah that's fine but what you're going to have to do is you have to queue for like the boom by queue no every time trolley
29:25
everywhere I'm out you're let's have a little vote are people going to come I to my free event it's
29:32
free guys so it's free it's free food it's a free event you can stay for free
29:39
yeah you just have to queue but you have we're good at queuing it's like the worst Disney World
29:45
ever no there's no ride it's a Towers the summer but it's B know guar to get
29:53
in yeah yeah you're guaranteed to get queed for a little bit saying yes cuz he just wouldn't queue you're just not going to go to the bring
29:58
well I say I say a little bit it's the bringing by que we um as if you were dropping the game off like last year the
30:05
hour and two hour yeah yeah exactly it's not you know yeah I'm doing it I'm doing it you love it you love it got a bit of
30:13
a mixed response here got some it is about half and half Becky's definitely coming cuz she is jumping the queue and
30:19
she's going straight don't you know who I am it was
30:24
an accident I didn't jump the queue on purpose
30:32
you were screaming do you know who I am sorry Becky it was just a joke for
30:39
the record I was stood looking at the fan pack artwork for wingspan which is beautiful and I said oh I'll take this
30:44
placee said oh no you have to stand there so I stood there which is where she pointed me to I didn't realize there
30:50
was at the front of a queue that had gone on around a corner and I just stood there happily then paid my money
30:55
everyone was tting and then walked past I thought what are they for if anything I I respect it I felt
31:03
terrible it's such a ninja move just EMG of the key it's like the
31:09
Shinobi SL she felt terrible with her new copy of her fan art of wingspan as she
31:15
skipped away I didn't think I did feel terrible I did go
31:21
then so I'm here with Judson we've just played deep regrets um you've just told
INTERVIEW 4: Judson Cowan from Tettix Games (Deep Regrets)
31:27
me it's self-published yes tetex yeah tetex games is is me I am tetex games
31:32
there is no one else which I think is an amazing things we' have done um especially with the current like the
31:37
current like climate and everything else I'm quite impressed by that the the artwork on deep regrets is is something
31:44
else thank you thank you that's all myself as well so like I don't hire an artist I I draw in pen I like physical
31:51
media yeah so I start with with ink so I you know do under drawings and pencil draw ink and then I scan and initially
31:58
appropriates on an iPad and I I think I really just use board game design as an
32:03
excuse to draw weird stuff I just like drawing weird things so you got hi Abomination monsters deep
32:09
regrets weird fish yeah when you say weird though I think you're understanding it cuz it just is like a
32:14
visual Marvel I literally love looking every little card even just the little text on it I I love so basically do you
32:22
want to tell us a little bit about deep regrets yeah so deep regrets is a horror fishing game for one to five players
32:28
uh in the multiplayer version of the game you're going to spend a week at se reeling progressively more horrifying things out either eating them taking
32:35
them for it to sell them to buy equipment you can use to make it easier for you in the future or mounting them
32:40
on your player map for score multipliers in the game it's got to push your like mechanic in there where you're like Gathering the the titular regrets cards
32:48
which affect Madness the lower you're on the madness tracker the more valuable fish become certain types of fish and
32:53
the more dice you can have to work with but at the end of the game you st understand the risk of losing your most
32:59
valuable fish this is like a meta game looking at how many regrets other people's have and how many your company
33:05
losing and and going by your game just trying to get all the regrets start draing them off other players it's it's
33:11
fun yeah yeah I was I was lucky in fact one of the other players started having to like get foul fish and drawing the
33:17
regrets back off of me which I think basically won me the game so it was lucky like to explain that mechanic like
33:24
if the regrets pile is ever empty we start having to to draw them off of other players yeah which means you're suddenly passing
33:29
regrets around between it's it's quite a unique game I trying to like explain it like um refer
33:36
it to another type of game but you can't it's it's a it's got a bit of pushy Lu it's got a little bit of engine building
33:42
it's got a little bit of card play Deck play um which is usually off of a tableau that's already down on the board
33:47
you don't know what you're going to get cuz it's in the sea you're fishing you're you're trying to push deeper and deeper maybe to get the more foul fish
33:54
or maybe not um it's a really asking me like you know what I would compare it to and I just draw a blank
34:01
I'm like uh I I don't know in terms of complexity I say wingspan and in terms
34:06
of of variety I love Elizabeth AR grave has like you know 200 something birds in her game so I've got 117 unique fish in
34:12
this one yeah but gameplay wise I don't know I don't know and it's it does have
34:17
Randomness to it but you can always manipulate that Randomness you've always got things that you can do which is really nice I like the little dink
34:23
mechanic as well where if you you don't get anything oh you you at least get something yeah so literally I I would
34:32
recommend this game I think I'm going to back it instantly as soon as when's it hit a kickstar so I may mean for the
34:38
first of July I have a few things left to do before then so it may be slightly later in July but all that everything
34:44
goes to plan first of July first of July so check it out guys um I'll post some pictures up on the socials as well but
34:50
thank you for your time Json and make you for yeah thanks for the game so there's a lot of designers here
LIVE EPISODE: Djinn Davey - You can become the next top designer but not one else likes your game
34:57
at the exibition off their games and I'm sure um someone's calling me sorry um
35:08
it's we're so professional it's live there just all you can hear from the mic
35:16
is put more speaker yeah yeah no M I'm
35:21
busy that's a dangerous game um why
35:32
D um so it's been it's been great come on
35:38
bab come on you're nearly there you're nearly there four minutes Davy four minutes
35:43
so it's great meeting the designers and you see they real passion behind their projects but what if you could become
35:49
the next top designer we've all probably had our ideas of games or thought oh that game needs to change its theme or
35:55
we can do that to that game so you become one of the next top designers
36:02
of that game yeah and it's one of your favorite games you love the game yeah so
36:07
everyone imagine the game that they've got in their head how about you JP I'm imagine why'd
36:13
you come to me first I'm still imagining go to someone else quick Becky you have like
36:20
like all your favorite games together in one terraforming Mars with animals in Arc NOA there go terraforming
36:30
animals how are you terraforming animals carefully care this dog is now part of the pav no terraforming
36:37
Mars it sure sure y terraforming Mars with
36:43
animals in a nice way where no animals are harmed in the making of the terraforming very important very
36:50
specific so what are you going to do to us I've got my game I've got mine I've got mine now yeah yeah basically Fallout
36:56
yeah but buy chip the games nice oh imagine it fall in imagine
37:02
it in the money like yeah right whatever Dan's T go
37:09
on mine mine would be a Dungeon Crawler that um just Dungeon Crawler was
37:16
3D that would fit on like a normal size table and when I say a normal size table
37:21
you just want a lifelike dungeon caller I kind of do I kind of do but um
37:27
but yeah something that would 3D a little bit descen is but that would fit on a normal siiz table and that didn't
37:35
take four hours to play yeah yeah cool at four player that would be my thing nice
37:40
cool well then curly you had an idea uh well I've talked about it before but Jurassic Nova Jurassic Nova yeah there
37:47
you go dinosaur I'm in exactly the same game but dinosaur not terraforming
37:52
dinosaurs no Curly has a dinosaur fetish don't you yes I was going to say that
37:58
but then you know I you really like dinosaur dinosaur I he loves the dinosaur man yeah yeah I've got about
38:04
four dinosaur games and C yeah that's too many D how about anyone else has anyone else got like a dream game that
38:10
they growing space vegetables growing space yeah U Rosenberg yes uve in space
38:15
we have this is a little throwback I like it ambo uve in spaceace games g and what you going to do to us to make it
38:21
horrible you only you be you end up being the only person to like the game
38:30
[Laughter] and for some reason it's not that it's a bad game just no one seems to like it so
38:35
it's not people don't hate it they just me yeah it's just a bit me you still so
38:41
you still get and it's definitely not a bad game it's just probably gin magic it's just not a good one no it's just
38:47
well no it is a good game just people don't like it sounds like Cloud Spire I love it no one else does but you
38:54
still get to play the game you vented yeah exactly so I'm doing it a little vote yeah let's
39:01
see that's PR the room it's pretty close
39:06
half the room souls are mine PE people are one this is a live show
39:12
and I'm joking this is a selection process we're actually a
39:18
cult well yeah I think you there we go so that's been Jin Davey we play a
39:25
little bit of music usually we might doing Genie no Bowie yeah a bit of Bowie yeah yeah
39:30
there we go nice and that's been the first half first half you
39:39
surved right we're going to get in the car now and let the others get out of the car so I can't get out to child
39:46
block the stragglers have arrived so we're here at the UK games
INTERVIEW 5: Viktor Peter from Mindclash Games (Ironwood)
39:52
Expo we just played our very first game first demo which is Ironwood and we basic he made a be line for mine clash
39:58
games cuz we're pretty much one of our favorite Publishers and we're not just saying that because we have Victor Peter
40:04
here uh giv us a little chat so how are you Victor uh great thank you and thanks for the opportunity for the interview no
40:11
oh I'm having a bless it's been five years since i' I've been to UK games Expo last but I love this convention
40:19
it's very chill very relaxed compared to especially so it's great to be here again no absolutely so I mean we you
40:26
obviously m Clash of games has been around quite a while we we're massive fans of your games even the ones you
40:32
know right back from the the start you an Acron the Caron perseverance like void forall like the these are kind of
40:38
four of our favorite um games that we we continue to play even now like we we
40:44
always trying to get those games on rotation on our table so yeah we we're absolutely buzzing to to to Capt you
40:50
today so the latest game that you're releasing um which is I think on pre-order and game found right now is
40:56
Ironwood right so wood in a very short snippet what is Ironwood and what's it all about so Ironwood is our first one
41:03
versus one game it's a skirmish game with uh focusing more on tactics rather
41:09
than strategy I would say and it's uh it's based on card play uh multi-use
41:15
cards and two very very asymmetric factions we have the wood Walkers who
41:20
are basically these feral shamanistic people living in the forest and trying to preserve their old ways and we have
41:27
the Ironclad who are these stin Punky iron U industrialist people living in
41:33
Mountain cities and Mining crystals and they just want to well industrialize and
41:39
they want to build forges and they want to claim the forest as their own so these two are never going to get along
41:45
and and that that's what the game is about that it's about them fighting it out so the the two factions really play
41:52
differently um the iron CL have this uh heavy economy large army heavy heater
41:58
play style uh but they are vulnerable to to sort of heat and run strategies in
42:04
which the woodwalker actually very excellent yeah so for example the iron CL tend to move their troops in larger
42:10
clumps and it's harder to take take on them head on but the woodwalkers can like Ambush them here and there uh they
42:17
can steal their crystals they can attack their drill which is their main source of income stuff like that so it's it's
42:23
really two very different play Styles uh fighting then there uh their end game
42:29
goals are different as well cu the Ironclad want want to build forges on the outer forest and mountains I mean
42:37
and the Ironclad are after their their lost ancient totems which are HD them on
42:43
the iron CL mountains so as soon as they can clear out the iron CL from those mountains they can retrieve their totems
42:48
and if they retrieve three of their totens they win because they basically summon the guardian of the forest who is
42:55
just going to wipe the Flor with I yeah so we we just finished our demo we we
43:01
didn't get enough time to finish the game but hopefully we we'll get to do that later um I think one of the things
43:06
that surprises me and probably will surprise people with fact that it's a mind Clash game they're expecting heavy
43:11
big box you know um probably four point plus on on the BG weight scale and
43:18
actually this game is I think very much rules light um you can pick it up in
43:24
probably 5 minutes the cards are very clear they're telling you exactly what to do there a few key words on there
43:29
that you need to understand but generally you're going to get going and and you're playing and and the fact that
43:35
while the game takes around an hour to to play yeah which you know for head-to-head kind of u a One V one game
43:42
it's fantastic so you can kind of you know play a game see who wins let's reset rematch maybe get two or three
43:49
games in an evening which I think it's always good fun to do so yeah um you probably can't answer this question
43:54
Victor but out of your back catalog for your own personal um catalog of M clash games which is the
44:00
one that you enjoy playing that I enjoy the most uh well I would say that it's
44:07
perseverance yeah yeah especially now when I'm absolutely deep in the design
44:12
of of episode three and four I I really appreciate the previous episode but I I
44:18
think people are going to love three and four as well yeah I'm lucky and fortunate to have play three and I
44:23
thought is fantastic um and I love just the the way the the ramch tiles work and
44:30
the exploration on the board and the fact you can now ride the dinosaurs and get them out there I'm so hyped for
44:36
episode four so how's that shaping along well it's almost ready how is it yeah
44:41
well the concept Sur what we wanted to um do there is that there is this uh
44:48
this ancient the ancient people who has who were living on the island a long time ago and thanks to our machinations
44:56
uh they they portals reopen basically so they they finally have their long awaited opportunity to return and claim
45:03
back their Island but we are there so that again that's that's not goingon to not going to work out for for either of
45:09
us so so we we're going to have to defend against them actually and we are also but since the port is open we also
45:16
have the opportunity to rebuild our ship and go home the PE so basically there are two ways and two main strategies to
45:23
follow in episode 4 which is either to stand our ground against the ancient and try to hold on to our Island and stay
45:30
here H or try to um basically check all the boxes to to be able to actually make
45:36
this journey through the portal and through the dangerous water surrounding the island and uh and Escape essentially
45:42
yeah it's uh it's not one or the other we tried that it didn't
45:48
work but uh you can focus on one or focus on the other and the way the game plays out will reward uh one strategy
45:55
better than the other and this is the one thing that took us actually quite long to get right but
46:02
then we burned through quite a few iterations until we we could we could get this get this balance right and and
46:08
get and make all both strategies attractive and interesting even if like
46:13
everybody is five minding on one and and even if it's just you doing it so we had to make both of those rewarding you up
46:21
that that was a tricky design exercise especially since we had like like we we could reuse a couple of things from
46:27
episode one but uh but other than that it's it's it's basically new design from the ground you see that's that's a
46:34
tricky part of perseverance it's uh it's more than Ms the ey Cuz uh when we say it's for the four episodes or four
46:40
different games uh we really mean that like yeah and they do feel that way you know even though they have certain DNA
46:46
that's kind of injected throughout the series each game feels different and and
46:52
and that progression that you kind of build from episode one to two to three and yeah I think such an epic
46:58
undertaking yeah you know the idea of it is like this is what we're going to do it's like oh wow no one's really done
47:05
that before in that style so no I Kos to you for doing that yeah yeah I I can't wait for the first people to actually
47:11
play the full Chronicle mode yeah epis I can't wait we're going I'm going to devote a weekend to it and we're going
47:17
to do like episodes one two on Saturday episodes 3 four on the Sunday I'm do a whole weekend of perseverance all the
47:23
way through the plan sounds like a great weekend that's it great stuff so thank you very much I could talk to you
47:29
probably forever Victor but you got stuff to do and we got stuff to do thank you very much app appreciate theity
47:35
thank you thank you right hello everyone my name's
LIVE EPISODE: Kerley introduces our Battleground head to head
47:41
Curley um we're going to be introducing the second part um so the idea of the
47:47
second portion of the uh live pod um is that we're going to be doing a a kind of a take on a concept that we did for one
47:53
of our episodes so um back for our first um back for our first birthday
48:00
anniversary of the first podcast we have we ever did um we actually did something called board game Battlegrounds now what
48:07
board game Battlegrounds is is basically top trumps between our top uh games for
48:13
that year um it doesn't need to be released that year just the ones we played most and the ones we enjoyed the most um so we did that JP did some
48:20
beautiful artwork on it congratulations it was lovely well funny at least um the hippopotamus picture and we that was BR
48:28
that was so good and then we play off against each other see who comes out and then we have an overall winner at the end of it so obviously we wanted to get
48:35
a bit of interaction we didn't want to do such a long form format so what we're going to be doing this time around is
48:40
we're going to be taking our top 20 games but we've uh well I tell you Adrian has put them into some really
48:45
weird categories un blame mostly curly mostly curly into some really weird categories and we're basically going to get you guys to vote after we've done a
48:52
very short blurb on those type of games you know give you a bit of a brief description see who sold it to you the
48:57
most and which ones you prefer out of those so that's the idea of it but before we go too far going to introduce
49:03
you to uh everyone we got here so as I said I'm curly um we've got Adrian down at the bottom there we got Tambo hello
49:11
and we got Dan hello franking Violet D hello introvert yeah the introvert of
49:17
the I'm shy um yeah so without further Ado um
49:24
basically what I want everyone to do is we're going to do a short like say blur on it and then I want everyone to vote
49:29
as to who's going to be in team sort of pink corner and who's going to be in team blue corner and our lovely ring
49:34
announcer here is going to be having a little look and then we're going to get the uh dant also to Gat room count of
49:40
the numbers and see who's won um so yeah so going for the first battle which is
LIVE EPISODE: Battles 1-3
49:46
the battle for an epic game day the battle for an epic game day in
49:53
the blue Corner Game of Thrones from fantasy flight games so Game of Thrones it's a game
50:00
about battles betrayal and the other b word I can't say cuz there's kids in here um it's all the opportunity for all
50:06
of amazing things to lose friends as well the ones you do want and the ones you don't want you'll lose them all during Game of Thrones and you get to
50:14
endlessly go until you've annoyed
50:22
[Music] everyone there you go there you go that that's your cell is it that's my cell
50:28
all right so I'm championing uh Twilight Imperium in the pink Corner Twilight Imperium hailing from Fantasy Flight
50:36
games one of my favorite games I'm not going to smack talk too much um fantastic game it's got space lines in
50:42
it it's got space Turtles what more can you want from a game can take up to 12 hours to do so that's a massive
50:48
bonus uh depending who you are um yeah it's what it's a classic Forex I mean it was so good we all heard of fantasy
50:54
fantasy flight games before there because of Twilight Imperium so literally kept them aat when they first
51:00
made the first made the game so that's how good of a game that is sold done
51:06
dusted so we are going to vote blue for Game of Thrones versus pink for Twilight
51:11
Imperium 3 two 1
51:19
vote one short Twilight Imperium is the winner
51:26
[Music] I'm happy about that to be fair I'm tall and I do love both
51:34
games so in our next battle we have the battle for Dinosaurs the battle for
51:40
dinosaurs raar
51:48
in in the blue Corner tiny epic dinosaurs from Gangland
51:54
games right so tiny epic dinosaur what a great game it's such a little game it's all for travel you can play it within 60
52:00
Minutes most importantly you get these tiny little dinos that look so cute it's a work placement and for such a small
52:06
game the it's a mind bendler it really does makes you think um what can I say
52:11
that's about it love it nice in the pink Corner perseverance episode one and two
52:20
from mine clash games I love mine Clash like like not
52:25
even like a little little bit like a lot if they could have like a child I want
52:31
to be that child I love them so much I've already been over to the stand and
52:37
I I love I love it he does look a little bit like a child as well 12 hour game with Dan but the game itself right dinosaurs
52:45
right dinosaurs you can't say anything else Dinosaurs the the theme is fantastic I love a game that has a rich
52:50
theme and that one carries over amazingly where a group of survivors on a a massive Cru ship crash into an
52:58
island and then now have to recolonize on this island and shocker is with dinos and I love it it's amazing game does
53:04
anyone remember Dino Riders from when you were a kid yeah if you do remember you're showing a bit bit of your age
53:10
there by the way um but in the third episode you actually ride around the little dinosaurs it's brilliant they got little saddles and everything that
53:16
doesn't sell it this epis one and two mate you can't do that oh right got bit then roasted her straight afterwards
53:22
it's like you remember D Riders yeah you're old speaking facts Davey speaking facts we
53:29
don't like them so blue for tiny epic dinosaurs versus pink for perseverance 3
53:36
2 1 vote I love you all love the tiny epics
53:42
it yes I think it might be blue I just say the angriest I've ever seen Tambo was when he got loads of dinosaurs and
53:48
realized that you had to close the pen they all escaped
53:56
so next we have the battle for the less fearsome animal animes the Battle of
54:02
less fearsome Animes in the blue Corner AR NOA from fural Land
54:09
Spiel I love Arc NOA how can you not like AR NOA how can you not it's amazing it's
54:16
amazing I mean it's I mean it well some people call it terraforming Mars with animals but I I don't I think there's a
54:21
strong difference between the two I like it a lot it's a fantastic game and I'm a I'm a big fan of um of games with tags
54:28
on them I just like that that that mechanic it's I'm all over it and it's a fantastic game who doesn't I mean how
54:34
many copies is arova sold worldwide it's crazy I love this it's 10 more than 10
54:39
fact he bought nine more uh and in the pink Corner White
54:46
Castle by D yeah that's me d one of my favorite new Publishers at the moment
54:52
they so I haven't played White Castle which is odd that I'm back it but it was one of the games that I was desperate to
54:58
play at Essen queued for hours for and still did not get to play so I've watched plenty your videos
55:04
so I know that I'm going to love it it's just nine turns gritty sort of dice placement Lots going on you feel like
55:10
you have nothing the entire game but manage to build an engine at the end of it I have bought my copy today and I
55:15
cannot wait to play it so yeah and hopefully when you're all done you can actually put it all back in the Box
55:21
correctly cuz I hear that's a bit of a chore getting it all back in the box so that's probably half the game right there so blue for Arc NOA versus pink
55:30
for White Castle vote oh that's
55:38
close I can't choose between my
55:45
babies I think I think that's pink I think that's pink by
55:50
one come on White Castle White Castle you are the winner a down to you that SW
55:59
you I'm sorry Becky I'll give you the fiver later Mark no I give you the fiver every
56:04
month true that's true actually okay we're here UK games Expo
INTERVIEW 6: Vangelis Bagiartaki from Hegemonic Project Games (World Order)
56:11
on the last day Sunday and we are hegemonic project uh games and we speaking with van so about World Order
56:19
which is the new followup to Ay which is fantastic game and we just had a demo
56:24
but what's the game everyone is listening not heard about your next kind of SE UPC coming game what's it all
56:29
about okay so this is world order this is a deck building game with area control uh the year is 2010 and we take
56:37
the role of global superpowers we have the United States of America China Russia and the European Union and we're
56:44
trying to spread our influence around the world yeah okay so the world is divided into seven regions we want uh
56:51
the these cubes are is our influence and uh we're trying to spread as much as
56:56
influence as possible we try to have the majority in each of those regions but the thing is that we can uh add our
57:02
influence in many different ways we can do it through economic means through military or through diplomacy yeah and
57:08
uh so each region has some country cards there which we improve our relations
57:13
with we take them in front of us they become our allies and then we use those
57:19
countries uh in order to invest in them in order to build military bases in order to apply political pressure to
57:25
other countries yeah and so on yeah and at the same time we also have to take care of our own domestic capabilities
57:31
our Productions what we're good at what we're not and so on and try to use all that to our advantage and I think the
57:38
thing that like honestly surprises me but the thing I felt really good when we played our demo was like the turns are
57:44
slick they're very quick you get around the table very fast and and I think it's the play time of world order a lot like
57:51
less than hemony is it is less than hegemony although it's still uh a game
57:56
oh yeah it will take about 3 hours to to play uh so we wanted we started uh
58:05
intending to make a more mediumweight game yeah but there was so much that we wanted to include and so much that would
58:10
come up while we were playing yeah uh that it end up becoming more leaning
58:16
more towards heavy yeah but uh as you said the turns go around very quickly
58:21
and we try to streamline as much as possible as many things as we could and we're actually still working on a few
58:27
details okay so we are trying to see if we can improve it to to the best of our
58:33
capabilities yeah yeah uh So the plan is to have a Kickstarter campaign around October okay yeah uh and uh then launch
58:41
the game uh in early 25 okay fantastic well if you want to get involved and
58:48
like I say the the game CR or Kickstart sorry Kar page is going to be on there later and if you like your your kind of
58:53
world dominations economic uh kind of dominations in in those kinds of games and you like deck building can I add one
59:00
more thing absolutely go for it so uh same ason we've worked with academics on this game yes so this is also based on
59:07
academic principles yeah and uh with hegemony uh during our Kickstarter we had a concept booklet that was uh that
59:14
had information uh regarding the theme and regarding the actual uh happens
59:21
behind the game so we're doing the same here for this one and uh the one preparing for World Order is actually
59:28
twice the size of the one in Germany and uh there is a section for each of the
59:33
four countries uh and each section is written by a different academic who specializes in this uh region nice
59:41
that's the thing about your games they they all come from like the real world and they're built up and they're like
59:46
fun to play and ucational as well at the same time which is awesome help people learn about serious topics to get an
59:52
idea what foreign relations is about what it means fantastic well thank you for engaging us
59:59
thank you for letting us play we love them so
LIVE EPISODE: Battles 4-7
1:00:06
yeah and next is our battle for head-to-head two players the battle for head-to-head
1:00:13
two-player games in the blue corner hopl marus from Chip Theory
1:00:19
games well what can I say about Hooper it's a great game minus the name
1:00:27
um you're Gladiators you're fighting each other you're in a big arena you got to get crowd favors um you wild dice of
1:00:32
battles you get controller big every different race has a massive creature you control and everyone's got a boss at
1:00:38
the end and it's just great fun battling you two Team battles as well and campaigns and you can play solo it's a
1:00:45
great solo game and it's Chip Theory yeah yeah and in the pink Corner War of
1:00:51
the Ring by ARS games War of the Ring um
1:00:57
I can't oversell this game it's my favorite two- player by very long way the idea of the game is you're actually
1:01:02
kind of reenacting the the the books and the film so um what's really interesting about it is kind of um if you play as a
1:01:09
shadow which is basically an accumulation of all the evil guys you can win in one of two ways either by
1:01:14
absolutely conquering kicking the rubbish out of all the uh the good guys or you can corrupt Frodo so there's
1:01:20
different ways of winning and then go on no you're right it's just a weird way to
1:01:27
say PR pre uh and if you're the good guy
1:01:32
obviously the opposite way around you have to take less strongs at the end me and you feel the the the main point of it is um you kind of feel like you're in
1:01:40
the position of them so it kind of feels like you're um really up against it if you're the good guys you're really up
1:01:46
against it you're fighting against all these different armies and feels like the shadow have got massive advantage against you and you just kind of you
1:01:51
know you get Aragon into you know meanus terth and you to fight them off it feels really satisfying but it's a really good
1:01:57
game really well um designed the setup's a bit of a pig but beyond that 4 hours
1:02:02
really good really good laugh and um yeah they've introduced loads of expansions that really expand the game
1:02:08
massively um so yeah one of my favorites vote now again was it hip hop
1:02:14
hippopotamus yeah what was it hippopotamus hip marus
1:02:23
or what's that cavia
1:02:28
that's what I'm saying board gaming with clout uh blue for hop Marcus versus pink
1:02:34
for war of the Ring vote oh that's lot Lord of the Rings fans in thank you very
1:02:40
much definely
1:02:45
play love everything about it but I cannot roll those damn dice it's a fantastic game it's just not Lord of the
1:02:51
Rings is it you know what are you going to do oh sorry it's me isn't
1:02:58
it wake up well you took like five minutes to explain War the ring right so
1:03:03
the the battle for political standing the battle for political standing in the
1:03:10
blue corner hemony from hegemonic projects in the pink corner is Liz boa
1:03:16
but I need to talk abouty firsty if you want if you want politics in a box then
1:03:22
that is it really it's um I like explain Hemy like is like root but with politics
1:03:29
um and there's no CC animals in it um it's a vey St no no it's a it's a great
1:03:35
game it's heavy there's a lot going on but it's very pretty and it just comes together really well um I'm I like a
1:03:42
symmetry as long as it stands up well and it doesn't take an absolute age to teach and I don't think it does I think
1:03:49
it's a great game and it and it and it covers um politics very very very well if you like that subject you still
1:03:56
owning down uh I sold it because I can't get it to the table enough but I think the game's really
1:04:01
good uh in the pink Corner Liz Bo right so if you um like a nice beige
1:04:10
heavyweight Euro I've already lost this haven't I you got one vote yeah and so you're in
1:04:17
a a bunch of politicians trying to fix a the great earthquake on in 1755 in Portugal um so yeah it's nice little
1:04:24
worker placement um you you have cards and you you have any little board it looks nice it's quite heavy but it's
1:04:31
probably one of the L's probably least heaviest ones if I my experience anyway that's my personal so yeah this B like
1:04:38
what yeah his heaviest rated game but for me it was I found it easier than it's weird seems easier some of his
1:04:46
other definitely so yeah that's this B blue for hemony versus pink for L
1:04:54
boa V it it's a blue BL blue Crow it's blue
1:05:02
blue yeah I think the award for the for the worst subject goes to Adrian on that one political was it political standing
1:05:09
what else do you put Hedman and lisbo into building it literally is building the
1:05:15
city anyway the next battle Adrian gets a bit grumpy turn up
1:05:23
late and then you give these kind of comments what
1:05:28
factual the next battle is the battle for bashing Doors Down in dungeons the battle for bashing Doors Down in
1:05:34
dungeons in the blue Corner Frost Haven Frost
1:05:40
[Laughter] Haven uh Dungeon Crawler it's the best
1:05:45
thing about Frost Haven in my opinion along with Gloom Haven is it's um I'm going to call I was going to say unique
1:05:50
but I haven't played enough games to say that so I'll say Innovative one go um where you basically
1:05:56
the idea of the game is you play one card and you can either choose the top or the bottom and then you play another card from your hand so you always know
1:06:01
what what you're going to do and over the course of this game there's you're going to upgrade the cards upgrade the characters go through all the different
1:06:08
levels um yeah and it's got almost infinite rep replayability and each
1:06:13
session takes about six hours to do because of all the admin involved so happy days I watched someone yesterday
1:06:18
through the press release uh show carrying theirs on Sat trucks yeah cuz it's that large yeah yeah I I have to
1:06:25
say this with the very small caveat I prefer Gloom Haven sorry to upset everyone um but we just seed with frost
1:06:31
Haven actually they've actually released out the book so you can actually pay the maps off the books now yeah the whole
1:06:36
campaign 20 minutes exactly dra of the line they were like n
1:06:41
and they've done it now they've got whole standing can buy them 70 quid that's that's nice is it top
1:06:48
of in the pink Corner descent Legends in the dark by Fantasy Flight games Des
1:06:55
scent what can I say um brilliant all you need to do is open a laptop doesn't take long to set up um you
1:07:01
got um you got a 3D tiles so how cool is that so when you actually finish going through a door and everything's 3D like
1:07:08
chest tables um you got loads of different characters and at the end it looks an epic game at the end once it's
1:07:13
all opened up and done and even you can have platforms full like a balcony can full and collapse on people cuz it's 3D
1:07:19
and it is a very very fun game and the app takes all the admin out the out the work of it so fantastic vote for that
1:07:26
one blue for frost Haven versus pink for descent vote pink
1:07:34
pink I would have to agree thank you I'd have to agree so we the next we have the battle
1:07:41
for discovering new areas of space the battle for discovering new areas of
1:07:47
space in the blue Corner Eclipse second edition second dawn of the Galaxy that
1:07:53
one thank you do it again sorry and in the corner
1:08:01
Eclipse second dawn of the Galaxy so you get to design your own spaceships which has to be the coolest thing you can do
1:08:07
in a spaceship is like I'm putting rockets on it and I'm putting Shields and faster engines and big batteries and
1:08:12
all that kind of stuff is batteries the coolest thing about making a spaceship probably not I shouldn't have left that last time so anyway you get to design
1:08:19
all your all your your cool Technologies you get to pass around the big tray of Technologies which is good um and then
1:08:25
you can if you want to attack the big Cosmic Clementine in the center it's a space thatum I
1:08:34
know it looks like the Death Star I wouldn't go that and there's a chance you could have set up the game and
1:08:40
finished playing the game before the next person I'm battling against oh
1:08:45
dear in the pink Corner void fall from my clash
1:08:51
games David D David tury enough said
1:08:56
is that what you're going with said this could be a tough battle I mean for people who don't know it's a 4ex Bas
1:09:02
battle which is a game which is amazing I can't say anything else cuz it's mine clash and it's amazing it's amazing it's
1:09:07
it's heavy but but it makes sense it's methodical and um it's very very pretty especially if you get the galactic box
1:09:14
um and I'm a sucker for dual lay dual layer tiles like and triple layer boards triple
1:09:21
layer it don't bring it to a convention no don't bring it to a convention the language of design is perfect that's all
1:09:28
we have to say we're not taking comments right now
1:09:34
marus it is it's amazing it's amazing blue for Eclipse versus pink for void
1:09:42
fall vote now oh oh that's close that is close I
1:09:47
nearly voted eclipse and I thought it's a blue game blue blue this great good
1:09:53
choices I'm proud of you all
INTERVIEW 7: Chris Priscott from Unfringed (Molehill Meadows)
1:09:59
well so again we're here on Sunday and we are atam Fringe Booth with Chris from
1:10:05
uh onf fringe. Co so Friends of the Pod been on the show before and we're back
1:10:11
thank you very much it's been uh amazing as always PG always is are you tired
1:10:16
though uh getting there Monday it's going to be a right off yeah fair enough
1:10:22
so you're back this year last year mainly around Zuli this year with your new game which
1:10:27
is Mill Meadows Meadows um yeah a flip and right where you are playing as me of
1:10:33
the mall you are tunneling through your new Meadow and you are trying to collect worms to give yourself worm Powers allow
1:10:40
you to dig tunnels even better uh collecting treasure meeting objectives uh all this kind of stuff yeah me get a
1:10:47
closeup on this Davey Davey's behind the camera by the way um so this is kind of
1:10:52
the the sheets that you'll be filling out and you'll be drawing the clipping card for tunnel pieces and literally toing around the map collecting those
1:10:58
worms as Chris said and those powers are pretty cool I quite like the powers actually and nice when you get like the
1:11:04
combos to kind of like make a new piece and then combo off and to like dig it twice and then let it touch more than
1:11:10
one face and yeah it's pretty satisfying good you had a good show so far really good yeah love um busy tables the
1:11:16
weekend um J still doing well lots of zie fans coming back promos Becky being
1:11:23
one of them she loves it she she absolutely loves it and also you're you're selling like plushies and things
1:11:29
right on the store couple of plushies we have a new jellyfish plushy this time uh
1:11:34
we had red panda plushies they sold out within 3 hours again um I should have learned from last year that exactly the
1:11:41
same Happ yeah you know yeah but yeah still some sloughs drafts jellyfish question
1:11:47
great stuff well have you other the great rest of the show and uh we'll catch you later thank you guys you
LIVE EPISODE: Battles 8-10
1:11:57
oh it's me again I keep I've got do this bit the battle for expanding civilizations the battle for expanding
1:12:04
civilizations in the blue Corner Sid Meer civilization the board game from
1:12:09
Fantasy Flight games absolute classic based on civilization the computer game series
1:12:15
which one uh well I would say it most closely replicates number four yeah civilization 4 um yeah it's a it's a
1:12:23
classic kind of um forx done in kind of like a historical um setting um the best
1:12:30
bit about it is the technology 3E so it really focuses on you know getting your military up and there's so many different ways to win um yeah it's
1:12:37
probably the precursor this version was brought out I think 2010 um it's probably the best game of this
1:12:43
expansions biggest downside I'll be totally honest is that um it's pretty much out of print now so you have to uh
1:12:49
yeah it cost a pretty penny but you know I never regreted putting it together so it's uh yeah one of my abs absolute
1:12:55
favorites of that genre but probably a 4H hour 5 Hour game so and take you all night so it's a what we call a
1:13:01
non-school night one we tried it a couple times went not okay not not on a
1:13:06
Wednesday no in the pink Corner tapestry from Stone Maya
1:13:14
games I I I love tapestry it's as a civilization game it is a civilization
1:13:20
themed game that doesn't really play like a SI game at all um there's cubes
1:13:25
there's tracks and there's really really pretty building Miniatures which are just gorgeous um I never grow tired of
1:13:31
playing it it's one of those games that I think scales quite well at most player counts maybe not five but me and the
1:13:37
wife as a two-play game player all the time and we love it and I don't get I don't get a chance to play many two-play games with her but that one is
1:13:43
definitely one that we get to the table a lot I love it it's beautiful tapestry all the way so blue for civilization versus pink
1:13:52
for tapestry vote pink all day yeah I won
1:13:58
one boo sorry sorry I like both games you f it against so the next battle is
1:14:05
the battle for exploring new lands the battle for exploring new
1:14:10
lands in the blue Corner lost ruins of arac from
1:14:15
cge right so lost ruins who can see more it's a Indiana and Jones kind of Base
1:14:20
game you you discovering temples trying to get artifact it's a love worker placement each character has new
1:14:26
abilities the board looks lovely and you can do some really cool combo card worker placement combos can I ask a
1:14:32
question is there anybody in who actually hasn't heard of this game just check it no I mean no
1:14:40
no you not I bought it off you already forgotten about
1:14:47
it oh yeah dead to me when Dune exists is dead don't even talk to me yeah yeah
1:14:53
so definitely worth a it's one of my all-time favorite games in the pink Corner Far Away by
1:15:01
catchup games yes so I don't think it's any secret this is going to be mine so um I queued for an hour in Essen to get
1:15:07
this game because it got recommended by a load of YouTubers that I like watching and um yeah they all took the mick at me
1:15:13
eating pizza while I was queuing for an hour at Essen for it it's a very small box game there is no fat at all on this
1:15:19
game it is simply you draft and you build your your sort of Temple not Temple your explor trail from left to
1:15:26
right you turn all the cards over at the end and then at the end you score from right to left it sounds really simple
1:15:32
and it is a really simple game to explain plays in 25 minutes teaches in five but it's a ugly little Trixie
1:15:38
puzzle that I love um probably not quite as popular as loster of arac generally at the moment but it is brand new out I
1:15:43
think it's buyable now can I add a little bit it's a core memory for me because it's the first time I've seen
1:15:49
you smile you came out to the window and you you were all redac and
1:15:56
you're like doesn't pay me any good like that
1:16:02
does it it's your social media post that make me
1:16:09
laugh can we vote please what happens by the way if I like
1:16:14
a bit of fat on my games can we vote please blue for grumpy face Adrian vers
1:16:21
sorry blue for lost ruins versus pink for Far Away vote
1:16:28
now blue has it no blue has it I do like far hey I think give it a year I'll
1:16:34
bring it back be far away all the time and then our final category is the
1:16:40
battle for exploring adjacent hex's oh dear I love the battle for exploring
1:16:46
adjacent hexes in the blue Corner terraforming Mars yes terraforming Mars
1:16:53
winner of our last ball game Battleground um probably yeah top three favorite games absolutely love it um the idea of
1:16:59
the game is we're yeah terraforming MTH done no but uh you've got a board on there and you're kind of putting down
1:17:05
forest cities and you're building up the oxygen and you're building up the amount of oceans on there and the temperature
1:17:11
to make it habitable um but you do that by playing all these cards and it's just the best engine builder um that I've
1:17:17
come across and it's an absolute staple of our group we probably play it a couple of times a year and have done since we started it couple times distant
1:17:25
for years this is not for me probably not for me you talk to me this is amazing this is amazing I was so ra such
1:17:31
a great game yeah it's my version of um what's that game that you play all the time that You' bought the 800 game JP
1:17:39
that JP can't thing what it is it's my version of that as soon as yeah too many too many boxes I was I was genuinely
1:17:46
asking I forgotten but it's okay um but yeah so I literally anything new tril me mar comes out I instantly buy it so I've
1:17:52
got all the expansions I've got the dice game I've got two of the C games and I've even got they've um done a
1:17:58
Kickstarter for yeah the Prelude 2 I have no idea why I need a second Prelude but I'm having it anyway
1:18:05
a didn't even hear him was no no in the pink Corner castles of
1:18:11
burgundy yes that's me so you want to talk about a classic castles of burgundy is an absolute classic they've just
1:18:17
remade it into a special edition of loveliness with lots of extra parts you can get acrylics and 3D parts and all
1:18:23
that kind of stuff Point salad after choices has possibly one of the best puns in board gaming which that the
1:18:29
geese are wild which is one of my favorite little bits in there and then uh so sorry about his personality that
1:18:38
why do you hate my P so much cuz you steal my puns and uh while it might have some red
1:18:46
hexes it probably won't outstay it's welcome unlike certain red hexer board games it was the winner of the board
1:18:52
game Battleground mate yeah fix so so that's it castles of burgundy blue for
1:18:59
terraforming Mars versus pink for castles of burgundy vote no contest no
1:19:06
contest no contest TM for the W TM for the win so
1:19:11
that's it that's our Battleground that's our Grudge matches for this
1:19:16
year hello JP's back on Sunday at the UK games Expo on our last day and I had to
1:19:22
swing by Lucky Duck games um mainly because pet fromy how's it going everybody showing
1:19:28
off andromeda's edge which first copy of andromeda's edge we're making it now n
1:19:33
producing it for everybody now it's happening it's happening it's real yes and I'm a backer of this so I'm I'm I'm
1:19:39
a like I can't wait to get my hands on this and and the production just looks insanely thank you very so for those
1:19:47
that don't know what andram Edge is maybe pizza can give us a bit of R sure absolutely so in INR Edge you are a
1:19:52
desperate faction and you've left your home where Something's Happened and you're you've reached the far end of the
1:19:57
Galaxy it is the edge of Andromeda and you think this is the safe place to build a new civilization H maybe maybe
1:20:04
not right there are other factions here we actually have like all told with all press 18 different factions you could
1:20:10
play and they're all asymmetrical abilities and you are surprised trying to get points but how you do that this
1:20:16
is a worker placement game uh at its core an engine building game at its core you have one space station and a couple
1:20:22
of ships and those are your workers to try and land and figure out how to rebuild your si how to get better Tech
1:20:30
it's a lot of fun yeah that's the thing like you've got these slot modules which are these little cards to your your
1:20:37
space station and as you say you reduce you pull your workers back your ships and you just trigger like rows of of
1:20:43
Combos and stuff so you know Dave's operating the cam right and he's he loves the combo right he loves the combo
1:20:49
he loves engine building games so might take this one M me too and the designers Luke and Maximus la that's their bread
1:20:55
and butter that's what they like to do and Luke also who made Manhattan Project energy Empire in that game what he did
1:21:01
is he combined workers with energy so that your pullback turns are even cooler like more more actions not just like
1:21:08
limited by the number of workers you have and also Luke really believes that there shouldn't be a bad pullback turn
1:21:14
there shouldn't be one that's oh well now I've got I'll just I'll just come back now yeah no let's see how many
1:21:20
combos we can do when we pull back right that's the goal yeah because a reset action in in a game it's a bit like you
1:21:27
know it's a bit like underwhelming isn't it so I to turn that into the probably the most exciting things the best to do
1:21:33
is like you can't wait to R the combo turns are going to go so long and awesome that you're going to say whose
1:21:39
turn is it anyway he's got it in he's got it in good man good man and you've also got
1:21:45
lots of different factions that you can play with different abilities we did something really cool in this that there's a there's a custom faction you
1:21:51
can play Pirates you can play fungus you can play uh insects you can play Tech you can play Cloud people and you have
1:21:58
uh some tracks that you are focused in but you also have a couple of abilities
1:22:04
that you could kind of use to ground you on your way but also we've made it so that your abilities are customizable you
1:22:10
can get these upgrades for your ships so you could say well today I'm playing these techn blurps but I've decided that
1:22:16
they have armed transports and that's what we're going to do today right so awesome awesome so when when can people
1:22:22
get their hands on this obviously there's a lot of backers who are this backers backers and but generally is
1:22:28
this come to retail yeah so backers are going to get it around September and
1:22:34
then we're going to have a big release party at ID and then it'll be everywhere and then we'll be like we'll be Off to
1:22:40
the Races and we're going to there's a uh if you if you are still looking for the Allin type stuff there are a lot of
1:22:46
retailers that backed it thank you retailers for believing in it those packages can still be found and then if
1:22:52
you want to assemble it lucky. games actually are who are with here at the show they will have all the pieces that
1:22:59
you can you know build the St if you just want the standard just want the gam play that's available for a pretty good
1:23:05
price otherwise you can add an expansion or Deluxe pces or promo whatever you want to do you know we love the BL we
1:23:12
love the BL yeah great stuff well thank you Peter great hosters and show this game off it looks incredibly awesome I
1:23:19
to play and excellent all right we'll get a game in right now yeah cheers
1:23:26
I have been given the task of outro because JP knows that I've never done one of these in a single take so they
1:23:31
thought it' be great to torture me by making me do the outro for a live show and the best bit of the episodes that
1:23:38
never include yeah if you if you want to listen to the bloopers they're 90% me doing outros again and again and again
1:23:45
so um they're fun to listen to me as well he looks me it's my fault I usually
1:23:51
is right I remember one year you did um
1:23:58
he was trying to advertise gridon for Paul Grogan and it took about I'm not even exaggerating about 12 15 attempts
1:24:04
to get it down because he kept calling it Grim con which is a massive insult to what is
1:24:10
a very nice con I have I should really retell the story but it's a PG show here
1:24:17
so I can't retell some of the stories as to why I kept calling it that anyway thank you very much everyone for coming
1:24:23
it's been fantastic to have you here as JP said at the start it's just when we talked about having to do a live show we
1:24:29
were expecting just like basically Joel and Marcus turn up and that was about it to see all these people here is
1:24:34
fantastic and we couldn't do the show without you so as we always say at the end please like interact with us on
1:24:40
socials please let us please let your friends know if like you think they'll like the podcast just let them know um
1:24:46
to give us a listen and hopefully we'll might be back next year to do this live show again it'd be great if we are so
1:24:52
thank you very much and have a good rest of PE thanks everyone
1:25:10
[Applause]
